View Full Version : OT only series with breaking the 4th wall humor? Do you miss this humor?

I was wondering if the OT was the only depiction of TMNT (cartoons, films, and even comics) that had "breaking the fourth wall" humor? I haven't watched EVERY single episode of EVERY TMNT cartoon series and I only saw the first three movies, so that's why I'm posting this question. I know that other TMNT series uses subtle jokes and references to other depictions of TMNT, but those characters are not cognizant of the other TMNT universes when making those jokes, or that an audience is watching them. (I know in Turtles Forever have the OT Turtles break the fourth wall in the 2K3 universe, but the 2K3 Turtles are still clueless to it.)
So was the OT the only cartoon/depiction of TMNT in which the characters were fully aware that they were a cartoon and that there was an audience watching them through "breaking the fourth wall"?
On that same note, do any of you miss it and wish it was incorporated again...say the Nick version now?

don't miss it. Wouldn't fit the Nick show, not such a direct 4th wall breaking as the FW did

Never understood it was a joke as a child. Thought it was some respnonse to parents complaining over violence, so the characters had to tell the kids, "-Hey kids, we're just a fictional story".
I thought it was stupid for years, the studios looking down at kids.

You might've been reading too much into it. I never sensed any coorilation between the 4th wall jokes and the parent groups concerned over the violence. They only did the "Don't try this at home." thing a couple times, but to me it felt more like a tongue-in-cheek poke at those G.I. Joe PSAs.

The 4th wall jokes are hilarious and the best part of the OT.
But they wouldn't work in any other series.

I like that type of humor as long as not every single episode. If done carefully its great. The Nick cartoon has it in a certain degree. All the easter eggs are Nick's way of breaking the fourth wall to older fans.So its breaking the wall in its own way. I get enjoyment out of that like I do the easter eggs as long as not overdone.

No, Easter Eggs are also known as "shout outs", whereas Fourth Wall implies the disclaimer that its fiction. If Nick started doing this after the show got popular, I wouldn't mind, but prefer that it feels natural. And the OT isn't really the most used 4th wall cartoon out there; Arthur anyone?
Anyways, this was exploited in Turtles Forever when the Utrom Shredder destroys it for good.

I know. That is why I said its Nick's way of giving us the notion that they are ficition while not direct recognition. Its like its in the place of 4th wall breaking. That is atleast the way I thought of it.
Many shows broke the 4th wall. The first was The Burns and Allen Show back in 1950. Its fun to see that type of humor as long as it is not exhausted.

It's still funny, but like anything else if it is overused (as it was in the OT) then it becomes stale.

I have to say that, breaking the 4th wall humor is a lot more used in ot than in 2k3 or NM, havent seen the new Nick toon yet, i know shame on me.
Anyhow, i find the 4th wall humor a trademark to the shows 'don't take things so serious, have fun' mentality. It gives the turtles a face, and it's funny, even though it is used a lot.
