View Full Version : Filming Of New Movie To Begin In April In New York!

So I guess it is still coming. This news comes from Production Weekly's Twitter page. Production Weekly is an online subscription-only magazine that's actually for professionals in the industry and offers production details for all films in various stages of production.

What I find quite surprising is that before they said they were going to film in Vancouver, but its looks as though they’re actually going to do some filming in New York. Anyway, we should start to hear about casting very soon, as well as more about the actual film.

Here's the link to their Twitter page: https://twitter.com/prodweek

It will probably establishing shots and background stills, helicoper shots and maybe sewer footage. It costs alot to film in NYC, so I'm sure they will limit their time there. Possibly doing so without a cast even in place yet.

Remember in order to have the setting of your film be New York, some (if not all) of it must be filmed here.

I'm really excited for this, hopefully I can find where they are shooting and take some pictures.

I was thinking that, as well. Just shots of the city streets and things like that. Like for the beginning of the original film.

They called the film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" does that mean they changed the title from simply "Ninja Turtles"?

Good news... I want it to be true. But above all else... I just want a live action TMNT film that is respectful of the source material and is actually GOOD.

As far as I am concerned, the only good live action movie was the first one (1990). If it's as good or better, I will be elated.

I don't want a Transformers style movie where the TMNT feel like background characters in their own film. The turtles, Splinter and Shredder (or whatever villain) needs to be the main focus. I want high-action, dark, moderate comedy (TMNT 2 and 3 were ridiculous high in comedy... this isn't the three stooges dammit), PG-13 film with lots of practical effects and a good opening for sequels. Is it too much to ask? Probably.

I've said it before but the TMNT really need to be martial arts experts in suits (Similar to the old live action films) only with CGI-enhanced faces similar to how they did it in Where The Wild Things Are. This would allow them to blend the realism of a character actually standing there with the enhanced emotion in the faces which animatronics alone can not provide. I hope they are smart enough to do it this way. I'm not convinced that 100% cgi turtles are for the best.

This movie may not be very good. Which is bizarre because a popular movie would convince Nick to keep the cartoons and comics going for more years until a sequel comes out.

I hate to think what might happen if this movie bombs.

Alternately, I hate to think of what might happen if this movie is a box office smash and if the story is horrific.

With things like NT:TNM, the last movie, and probably this one as well... I find it's a bit like Groundhog Day. I don't mean the Groundhog Day movie, I mean Groundhog Day itself. What am I talking about, you ask?

We all know how it works. If the groundhog emerges from its burrow and all is well, that means spring is coming early; if it emerges from its burrow, sees its shadow, and goes back into its burrow... that means winter continues for another six weeks.

With TMNT, every additional mass media incarnation -- particularly the movies -- that come out that are ghastly, kid and toy-pandering debacles... each one of these keeps signifying another 5-10 years of pop culture continuing to believe that is the definitive Ninja Turtles, when it's anything but. And the clock just keeps being reset 5-10 years on this, over and over again.

Never thought of it this way but I guess it makes sense.

Sometimes I just want to see them back no matter how bad the outcome is but I digress...

If they are just starting on April It really makes me wonder if it will be ready for next year.

I'd say that whether or not any of the more kid oriented versions of the property is 'definitive' or not is more of a matter of opinion, rather than something you can make a blanket statement on whether they are or aren't compared to the comics. Or on the reverse, I don't think one can really call the comics 'definitive' for everyone either without making a big presumption.

Are the more 'adult' oriented, darker, comics the 'original' version? Yes. But the definitive? That's up to how one likes their Turtles.

Anyway, that nitpicking of mine aside, I'm kind of wary still after the whole 'alien' debacle from before. But that script has surely been tossed out now, after the previous halting, right?

I refuse to let myself get worked up over this movie. No sense in it.

Unless Col. Shrader is actually happening, then I'll just wait for the dvd.

If the Turtles are still aliens the movie will suck either way.

Zulithe
01-12-2013, 05:36 PM
The Turtles were mutated by a substance created by, or in consort with, the Kraang... that is the closest thing to "from outside of earth" the TMNT should be, period. If they change that, I will consider it a huge strike against the film. Being from Earth is what grounds them in this big strange world of aliens and other dimensions and crazy monsters. It just won't be the same if they are from elsewhere.

I do not understand the desire to make big changes to the TMNT's origin... be it making them reincarnated or from another planet or what... it is not necessary.

I should have went into film... this is the film I was destined to make. I know exactly how it should be to please fans, draw in new ones and still entertain the masses. I have so little faith in the hollywood machine it's not even funny.

It's such a tough movie to make. Do you make sure it appeases fans like us who are in our 20's and some 30's, but grew up with the original movie. Or do you make it appealing to the kids who are discovering the turtles for the first time through the new Nickelodeon show. Based on some of the stuff I've read (not referring to that god awful draft from January last year) it seems like they want a more action oriented movie, which to me says maybe it will be more like the first film (turtles using their weapons during fights, a little darker, more inspired by the original comic). Whether we get a cool action mirage inspired movie or a funny more campy kids movie, I'll be happy so long as they pick one and stick to it. I can't stand when a movie tries to appeal to too many things and has no identity or tone (take the opening scene of Revenge of the Sith as the prime example).

The '90s movies had a separate New York unit to provide stills/background shots, as it will be likely that the majority of the filming will take place in multiple studios, or one predominant location with a side of stock scenes. And its definitely feasible to start in April and be ready by the following May based upon the production schedule of the '90s movies. I just don't want this to be too similar to the 1990 movie, but more entertaining with popular characters such as Krang, Baxter Stockman, Leatherhead, and Bebop & Rocksteady that will surely draw fans of the OT. But this movie makes me nervous since it will have the biggest media impact on the Nick era. If its a box office smash, expect a repeat of 1990-91 will Turtle merchandise everywhere, perhaps even exceeding the merchandise of the golden era. If it does poorly, this will draw away all but the loyal diehards and cause the Nick era to end their cartoon and cause most merchandise to tank. Fasten your seatbelts fans, its likely going to be the most critical moment in the franchise's lifespan to propelling if the TMNT brand will be eternal like Batman or fade away like Woody Woodpecker.

But they're right in a way... "Gotham" has been a nickname for New York City for over one hundred years. The term "Gotham" goes back much further. The New York Public Library even did an article about it:

http://www.nypl.org/blog/2011/01/25/so-why-do-we-call-it-gotham-anyway

As for the shooting beginning in New York... I'm really hoping they returned the origin story to it's original state. A bunch of aliens from another planet would be the biggest mistake ever - Kevin Eastman seems so enthusiastic about what's coming up, I can only hope that he's convinced them to do the origin correctly. :ohwell:

Your usual brand of whining and self-centered entitlement issues never ceases to entertain me Andrew.

Maybe it's time you realized nobody gives a f*ck about what YOU and the boring-ass MIRAGE/IDW crowd consider the "definitive" vision and you lot should just enjoy the various interpretations? If people want to pick a vision that they think lines up with what they think the franchise should be, why should they be judged by idiots like you as having the wrong idea? Without reinterpretation, you get the same old thing, and that's not how franchises work you uneducated idiot.

people can whine that they dont want a campy kids flick or that going too dark and staying too true to the mirage vibe will ruin it for today's gen of fans, but the fact is this is going to be a new movie and whatever comes out is going to be the film face of the franchise.

if its good, AWESOME! if its bad...well, more of the same according to the majority of fans that weren't feeling TNM or '07. but nothing changes the fact that now, apparently, filming will start in april for a release early next year.

THIS IS GOOD NEWS.

Might even be a slight presence at SDCC this July. Maybe in the form of a teaser poster or something. The release date is still subject to change, though. As of now its set for 16th May 2014. Godzilla is also set for the same day, which comes from Warner Bros.. No way two studioss would dare release two of their summer tentpoles on the same day. One of them will definitely move. I just hope the move isn’t too drastic for either, as I’m looking forward to both.

If they are actually shooting in April it's entirely realistic for there to be a SDCC panel. It's the definitive venue for them to hype of the release for next summer.

Their goal is likely to finish principle photography before the second week of July just in time for the con. They'll show a little scene or montage, my guess.

Preregistration tickets for SDCC 2013 sold out very fast, and general registration begins sometime in early 2013. If you want a ticket... sign up for a free comic con account and set it to notify you. Tickets will probably sell out in an hour or so. Better be prepped. Gonna be a big year for TMNT fans!

Viacom owns TMNT. Nick makes the show, IDW makes the comic, Paramount makes the movie.

why on earth is Michael Bay making our movie and not the guys who are writing the weekly programming?

I have family in upstate New York and I hear they are planning on filming there in my home town at the ski resort for this movie. Not sure when or what kind of scenes, but that's the word on the street. Who knows if it will actually happen, but it'd still be pretty cool. :tsmile:

*facepalm*

the franchise is owned by viacom, as previously stated. there's not one single group of people that handle ALL aspects of the turtles. that would be...stupid...

franchises are divied up because it would be too much work for one group of people to work on an ongoing tv show, a large film project, a monthly comic, along with any peripherals such as video games, books, toy production...

same for marvel, dc, star wars...anything really.

Word is, they needed a slope, and they needed it to be closed.

If you recall, the supposedly scrapped script contained a downhill vehicle chase/battle in the snow. :teek:

Personally, I think Michael Bay was lying. Anyone who followed the production of the Transformers films, particularly the second one, will know that he is a very big liar. The TMNT script that leaked was the real deal, IMO. Saying that, it was clearly an early draft. We know that work has been done on it since, as well as a brand new writer penning another draft. So whilst changes have definitely been made, I just wouldn’t expect anything substantial. For example, as it was such a major plot-point, expect the Turtles and Splinter to still be aliens.

I think giving the turtles secondary roles sucked, but I was open to the changes in mythology. Now that is seems like it's happening, I'm actually getting excited to see some of that stuff. I'm finding myself concerned by how much may have been changed...

everybody seems to be freaking out about raph's actor being so large and tall. its mo-cap, folks! size doesn't matter, only movement. there wasn't REALLY a 10-foot + tall hulk in avengers interacting with evans, hemsworth, johannsen, etc...

if you're worried bout how fights will work, well...its a movie and the specifics will be worked out during production. (most likely, the actor will work with a stunt team to choreograph the fights, possibly film a few passes with the fight team for lighting and reaction references, then the scenes will be filmed without the actor, with the fight team acting and reacting with the proper reach. then the actor himself will go into a mocap studio and do the same thing.)

also, there's the possibilty that since a lot of times the actors don't do their own stunts or fight scenes, they'll get an actual fighter or stunt-man of similar stature to the CHARACTER and do it that way.

of course, this movie is already on a collision course with mediocrity, so it kinda wouldn't be a surprise if all of this went out the window and the turtles are actually all 6-7 feet tall and seemingly in their 20's and 30's.

:ohwell:ENTIRELY DISAGREE.

They would not have cast this big, buff, superhero/football player-playing dude if he wasn't going to do the motion capture. They would've cast a voice actor. This guy is going to do the voice and the mocap suit, because that's the only thing that makes sense.

The Hulk primarily interacted with CG characters. You cannot compare that to the turtles fighting, hand-to-hand, with live-action Foot soldiers. Size ABSOLUTELY matters when you're choreographing a fight between a mocap actor who is a foot taller than his on-screen character will be, and a live-action actor whose height will not change. You can shrink the mocap recordings, but the movements won't be the same. A 6'2" turtle actor cannot punch a 6' Foot Soldier in the face with the same physical motion as a 5' 3" turtle can punch a 6' Foot Soldier in the face. And imagine grapples. There would be no point in motion capturing if you had to alter EVERY SINGLE motion to adjust for the character's height..

These turtles are going to be over six feet tall.

The End.

well, its not The End because you dont have prestidigitation or precognicence. plus, not once in that post did i say ritchson wouldn't be doing mo-cap. in fact i said HE WOULD. i also said that actors don't always do all their own STUNTS or ALL OF THE FIGHT SCENES. Mo-cap or not. im pretty sure it was only liam neeson in certain close-ups in the fight scenes of taken. same with matt damn in the bourne movies, etc, etc...

stop whining and freaking out and re-read the post. when the stunt team shoots a clean pass of a fight scene, without the turtle actor (ritchson OR stunt-turtle) in it, they will compensate for the difference in size. thats how these types of special effects are accomplished.

but, please, keep posting with certainty about things you know nothing about. its entertaining, really.

This guy isn't Liam Neeson. He's not Matt Damon. Do you really think this guy was so perfect for the role, or that he's such a great actor, that they decided they would use stunt teams and camera tricks to make him a foot shorter?

-he's cheap, so he works for their budget.
-he's unknown, so he won't pull any diva ish.
-he can act( i guess...never actually seen him in anything, but the producers chose him so i guess he works for what theyre doing.), or at least put up with the mo-cap suit and all it entails.

and the reason to go through the trouble is because thats the stuff that happens when making a movie like this. just because you dont understand it, doesnt means its not valid or it wont work.

why not just cast little people in lord of the rings? by your line of reasoning, why even do mo-cap at all and not just do cgi animation?

But I think it's a stretch to think they couldn't find a guy who fit the bill and was shorter. It makes sense to make John Rhys-Davies look like a dwarf, because you get to have John Rhys-Davies play the part. Same for Neeson and Damon. There's a clear payoff. we're all fans here. obviously. but lemme break something to you...

TMNT is NOT the most publicly captivating, zeitgeist capturing franchise that exists right now.

it's wallowed in relative mediocrity for over a decade and a half. this is NOT paramounts #1 tent-pole movie for 2014. they're NOT going to cast "name-stars" at all. them casting megan fox and releasing that info as though it was ground-breaking and industry-shattering should be proof enough of that. hell, even if it were a huge deal, they still wouldnt cast "name-stars" as they're going to be covered up by all that cg. makes the fact that, by your own words, there should be a payoff for that, moot.

that being said, THIS IS HOW THESE MOVIES ARE MADE. (again) doesn't matter that this guy's a no-name, the "trouble" they're going through would have to be gone through no matter who they cast.

They could've cast a 5'3" no-name. And acting like CG is CG, and adjusting for a height difference is no extra trouble is just silly.

If the next turtle they cast is 6' tall and built like a football player, we'll know what's up.

I find it funny that people are talking about his height and worried that will affect Raphael. With movie technology nowadays you can fix anything. Did you know that Ian Mckellen is 5'11" whereas john Rys-davies is over 6', at yet in The Lord of the Rings, Gimli is way shorter than Gandalf, and all that was just done with clever camera work. I think its true they cast him for his body type, but not his body size

I think its true they cast him for his body type, but not his body sizeThat's beside the point... Of course it can be done. I never said it couldn't be done. But they're not casting hobbits or dwarfs or anything like that. They're casting human height turtles. They definitely could have found a short guy of the proper build, if they wanted to. And this guy is not some spectacular actor, or a big name the tie to the movie. So I see no reason to "fix anything" to make his height work. It makes more sense that they cast a big guy to play a big turtle.

And, for the record, I have nothing against tall turtles. I am not "whining" or "worried," because I don't even object. I just think it's silly that, without knowing anything for sure about what the turtles will look like, everyone is so quick to say, "No! They can make a tall actor work!," instead of accepting the likelihood that the turtles will actually be tall.

We have one solid clue about what these turtles will look like, and that is the casting of this actor. If your mind goes directly to "They can make him look shorter," then you must have faith that the turtles are going to be short.

You and a couple others say there's no need to worry, and you explain how these turtles can be short, despite the fact that there's no indication that these the turtles will be short, and despite the fact that the only clue you have is a tall actor. And that is why I say y'all are in denial.

again, you needa go back and read the posts i've been making. i actually agreed that there is a large chance bay and co will totally ignore the height thing and indeed make them 6 feet tall. that was in the first post i made on this thread...because i DONT know what they're going to do. after that i've simply been explaining that if they wanted to make them shorter, they could and that since no one knows for sure whats gonna happen, there's no need to freak out. you're the one who's been speaking in absolutes about this height stuff.

and you keep saying that this actor should be an indicator for what the turtles will look like...ever see the cgi beowulf? ray winstone played him. google him. andy serkis played king kong. chris evans was filmed with his normal buff body in captain america and they made him scrawny in post-production. (this is prolly the best example of how the "reach/height/size problem" can be fixed and worked out.) but obviously, you've got your mind set on what you "know".

good luck with that.

I don't know how extras get hired out in the US, but out here in Belgium, every time a movie gets shot an open casting call is announced in papers, on the radio and internet.

A few months ago this was the case when they filmed scenes for 'The Fifth Estate' (starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange) in my hometown of Hoeilaart and a few other cities. I can absolutely see that. I actually gave a look at the Transformers: Dark of the Moon Blu-ray, and watched the documentary.

For those who don't know, the real story for Megan Fox not being part of that film is because, during Transformers 2, Fox had mentioned that working with Michael Bay "was like working for Hitler".

Producer Steven Spielberg didn't like that at all, and thus got her fired.

But on the Blu-ray, Michael Bay's reason for 'not having Megan Fox' was because...."she looked too different".

Uh...looked too different? What, did she get a new nose like Jennifer Grey?

So yeah...Michael Bay was flat out lying his ass off about that...he also said that he'd 'tone down the goofy humor' for that third film...

So...is that why we had folks like Ken Jeong and John Malkovich in the flick, acting all 'zany'?

So Bay does have a tendency to have F.O.S.S...(for those who don't know, it's Full Of Sh*t Syndrome).

So...is that why we had folks like Ken Jeong and John Malkovich in the flick, acting all 'zany'?Hahaha! The only thing I'll give him credit for toning down is the racial sterotypes. He nixed the ape-faced, gold-toothed, illiterate twins. And he gave Tyrese's character a real role, instead of Josh Duhamel's sidekick, who was basically Token Black Guy from Not Another Teen Movie.

And we won't even go back and talk about Jazz.

True but to me Scatman Crothers just had class...like Morgan Freeman.

But the Jazz in Michael Bay's flick was just the opposite.

Looks like you need a "SAG" card. I believe that costs money...which I'm not a fan of.

Spitfire

Looks like you need a "SAG" card. I believe that costs money...which I'm not a fan of.

It cost more then money. First you need to collect enough SAG points by partaking in SAG approved projects. One such way is to be a very low level extra on major film sets or get yourself onto a SAG approved independent film. Once accepted you need to pay dues, which last I checked was somewhere in the 2,300 dollar range. This fee is yearly by the way. SAG is actually now SAG-AFTRA so at least the dues are duel purpose.

Honestly SAG to me is a joke. Yes it opens doors to lots of projects but it also closes doors to anything non-union and for most actors that's where they will make the bulk of their money. I've met tons of SAG actors and 90% of them are horrid and not worth playing a screechy teenager in a low budget horror affair. It's piss easy to get a SAG card and most of them think that's all you need. They get their SAG card and head to LA then end up waiting tables. Getting them is too easy and since SAG wants money they will accept anyone with the SAG points regardless of talent. Sadly the points can be collected without having any talent either. It takes no talent to sit around on a set for three days doing nothing and then maybe standing in the background for a few shots. You can seriously obtain your SAG points that way and it's kind of sad.

Dirty Blond
03-28-2013, 08:12 PM
To be a background actor does not require union membership, although there are both union and non-union jobs.

It didn't cost me anything to register with Central Casting, either. They just took my photo. I got a job right away, too. Paid a hundred bucks.

Anyway, I don't want to get too far afield. I was only suggesting them in case Paramount uses them to book extras.

Spitfire
03-28-2013, 08:14 PM
Not always the case. Some films won't deal with non-union actors because they don't want someone who might just decide to leave with no penalty mid-shooting. Woody Allan shot a film in San Fran recently and wouldn't take any non-SAG extras.

I never thought of that before. I was on the set of a Tyler Perry movie recently where they were just asking for people in the area to arrive early and be extras for a shoot. You had to register earlier of course. I wasn't an extra, but it was an interesting experience being on a real movie set. :twink:

If it's a large crowd scene that requires a lot of people it's not likely to involve the union. Those are the kind of things they'll advertise for people to just show up via local radio. For "featured extras" it would depend on the production. I was cast as a featured extra in Might Ducks 3 through an open casting call at the Mall of America.

Seriously Stryker? This is a forum, it's practically made for arguably trivial discussions, like "Aprils hair shade". Its not like the makeup crew just tossed whatever red they could find in her hair. They made a precise choice. If disagreeing was just "Bitching", this would be a scary world.

Jones Beach is only 45 minutes away from me. My cousin & I drove there yesterday, found the site, but naturally couldn't get in.

However, we were told they were shooting STUNTS, and that filming on-site was ending that day. They had been filming there for roughly 4 days prior. I'm guessing the Turtles were there, because they're all martial artists right? The guy also told me that they're heading to Manhattan next, but location was unknown to him.

It was really cool to see TMNT production going down on the Island! They were going under the working title "4SQ".

They are doing quite a good job at keeping things under wraps. Even Iron Man had leaked concept art by now. I contacted the main creature designer for the film, asking if they could give me some unused concept art and he said " TMNT is so high security I would get my balls put in a vice if I provided you with anything.". Its fair, I don't want anyone losing their job over anything. I think most of it is being shot on sets, which is why we are seeing a lack of photos. Once extras start to attend filming we will start getting more info.

On another note, anyone I have contacted in regards to the film refferes to it as TMNT rather than Ninja Turtles or NT, unprovoked by me as I have been referring to it as Ninja Turtles because I thought that was the title now....maybe not?

Bay's films, no matter the reputation, make huge amounts of cash with general audiences. In fact, the other day I tried making a joke about Bay's Transformers franchise to people who you might call a "general audience." The response I got was mainly, "I liked those movies."
