View Full Version : Did anyone else like it when the OT made fun of itself?

There are a lot of moments in the OT where the writers poke fun of themselves. These are a bit different than 4th wall breaking moments, these mainly point out at how repetitive the show sometimes is but its all in good humor. Here are random lines from various episodes I'm talking about:
- Raph: Let's hope next time the writers can come up with a better story plot.
- Mike: Didn't we already do this in another episode?
- Shredder: Have I ever failed you before, Krang?
- Krang: Yes, you fail me in every single episode!
- Raph: This has got to be THE dumbest story idea I ever heard.
- Leonardo: Shredder got away again!
- Raph: What, after 100 episodes you expected something different?
- Raph: This is not the way we get rid of villains on our show.
- Leonardo: And you thought only the other Turtles made witty remarks.
- Rocksteady: (Looks at vat of mutagen) This isn't going to be another mutant story, is it? Yuck, isn't everyone sick of these by now?
Truly the best part of the OT is how it poked fun of itself.

Man I miss the witty sarcastic raphael so much. He never returned. Nice examples. And I loved when they did that in the ot .

That was the very best part of the OT! That's why it's my favorite universe to write fanfiction for. Because it makes fun of itself, I feel like I have more power to manipulate what I want, instead of feeling afraid all the time.

Breaking the forth wall and making jokes centered towards the characters having insight to that their just part of a cartoon is the essence of OTs humor, and yeah! It is a great aspect of the series, and it keeps many of us who were fans as a kid still fans and watching the show today as adults.

I'm not a big fan of the OT, but I love those kinds of dialogues. As a kid, I never noticed those things, but it's very neat when you watch as an adult.

Yeah, I always liked those moments the best. It was so funny how they always did that.

Oh Fred Wolf Raphael, you're so sassy.....
Most of the time this kind of stuff is very, very funny to me. I'm an eighties/nineties kid, and that style of humour was already pretty ingrained into popular culture when I came on the scene.
In the wrong hands, this style can be used as a crutch, a way to put down any kind of critical thinking because it was "all supposed to be a joke" so you can't say anything negative about it, but fortunately that doesn't seem to happen that much with the old cartoon.

Those were the days all right! My favorite moment was in "Michaelangelo, the Sacred Turtle" when Mikey commented on how it was too late to rewrite the script.

I always found it, well, remarkable. It brought me back to reality ...

Kind of sad they don't do that these days anymore, then again, perhaps it wouldn't suit in.
I also have to think of a Line from Donatello. Something like "Kids don't do that at Home, we're Professionals."

This is what I loved about the OT, made the show seem more realistic. When I was a kid I used to believe the characters were real because of this.

I can't remember the episode and context but I do like the line:
Raph: Tell us something we don't know
Leo:I'm not telling you, I'm telling our viewers

I think that was a Shredder/Krang exchange. It went something like this:
(Krang points out one of his new inventions, and Shredder says exactly what it does)
Krang: You don't have to explain it to me, I'm the one who invented it!
Shredder: I wasn't explaining it to you, I was explaining it to THEM. (points to the audience)

No, that was a real Raphael and Leonardo exchange from one of the fifth or sixth season episodes, I think? The episode title escapes me.

This is one of my favorite quotes.
I really liked the OT for what it was, a lighthearted humorous show. The bad guys just cracked me up.

I liked it because it gave the show a sense of humility in the process because even the characters themselves knew how bizarre or ridiculous some of the plots would be. It also made the viewer more "involved" with the characters too through breaking the 4th wall. Those are just a couple of the many charms that made me like the OT.

It wasn't just the plot's ridiculousness that was pointed out, but the characters themselves. Some of my favorite moments were when the Turtles would call each other out for commenting how odd some kind of bizarre creature looked when they themselves were also considered bizarre creatures.

The very reason I got into the Turtles in the first place is because the show didn't take itself seriously.

I enjoy these jokes more as an adult than as a child, since it just seemed to be a natural portion of the storyline, though anytime Raph would say "cartoon" would always make me laugh since a cartoon is actually talking about a cartoon! Shredder/Krang where really soft-spoken sadists who really didn't want to cause evil at times, but also would admit that being a villain is fun.

Wahahaha :tlol: This is one of the reasons OT Raph is my favorite incarceration of the turtles. He's got a comeback for everything! I love a show that can poke fun at itself (its actually one of the reasons I love MAD Magazine, along with the show)

I love this:
*Shredder: -"Krang, turn that map off. I know where Lisbon is."
*Krang: -"It's the educational part of the episode."
(Ring of Fire)
And they say TMNT was not educational enough for the new US children's TV law from 1990 (which became stricter in 1996, when TMNT was cancelled).

One forth wall quote I like is from Splinter Vanishes.
Donny pops out of a manhole after the repair shop gets blow up.
April-Donatello you're alright, but how did you get out?
Donny-Do we have time for a flashback?
April- it's your show.
