View Full Version : April and her interactions with the Turtles

(not sure if this thread has been done) but...
We all know Donnie likes April..alot XD but is anyone else worried that Donnie might be taking April away from interacting with the other boys??
It seems so far that April trusts Donnie the most, which is fine but I worry the others won't get a chance to spend as much time with her...
We have seen Donnie be the one to save her and comfort her the most, but it would be nice if the other turtles did it for once.
Thats just it.... I LOVE DONNIE! but I just sometimes hope that April isn't just Donnie's crush....since we see it every chance we can get. (pretty much whenever Donnie is in the same room as her)
I don't wanna whine or anything, but does anyone else feel this way?
(if not maybe you can make me feel better by telling why) :)

Hands down, Donnie is adorable. I love how awkward he gets around April...how he tries to act so cool and suave...it's hilarious! Does he take away from her interactions with the others? Maybe a little...but April hasn't been in the show enough IMO to really gauge that.

Unfortunately April is the literal "girl next door" character. I was hoping she'd had an episode for herself so her character gets explored a bit more.

I think its great that Donnie gets that part in his character.. I think he lacks in screen time often in other versions because writers do not really know what to do with his character.. he usually is just there a little bit to explain things and that is it.. its nice for him to have something other than just being the smart one.

I agree with this. Donny's usually more of a ho-hum character, kind of just there to build whatever the Turtles need, or to hack into enemy computer systems. Donny has really grown on me alot in this series though, enough to become my second fav (when he's usually at the bottom). ;)
I really would like to see her interact more with the other Turtles, though. And an April episode would be awesome, to build up her character a little more.

I love his anxiety, too. 1987 Don was usually so self-assured and "I'm the genius so I'm gonna save the day". Dont get me wrong, 87 Don did have some moments of self-doubt....but I just love 2012 Don's moments of freaking out.

The whole donnie/april thing has been a great twist for this series, but I do think they focus on that aspect a LOT at the expense of other interaction she could be doing with the turtles.
I'm looking forward to more of her training with Splinter. We got to see a LITTLE bit of her 'in action' in the Rat King ep. She's clearly used some of what she's learning to protect herself from Splinter, so that's a nice start.

I do hope she'll interact with the other Turtles a bit more, but I do like how Don acts whenever he's around April. It's just so cute.
And I agree that I want to see more training sequences with April and Splinter or maybe April sparring with one of the guys.

Donnie answering the phone when she called in "I, Monster" was priceless.

You know... now that you mention it... I don't quite remember April ever interacting much with Raphael in the old show. I mean the Turtle she probably had the most solo adventures with were either Michealangelo and Donatello, mostly Mike though. And yeah there were like 1 or 2 episodes where it was her and Leonardo, but offhand I don't remember any episode involving some solo time with her and Raphael.
While I adore the Donnie/April dynamic, I too hope for both more interactions between her and the others and for more characterization and focus on her.

April seems to be critical to the Turtles whenever she finds them doing something that isn't wise. As soon as she figured out that Leo was in love with Karai, she knew that it would be a trap. For Mike, April is just another dudette who is a bit passive interacting with her. I'd like to see more April interactions with Raphael, especially after Casey Jones is introduced since the different Aprils have had different ways reacting to Raph's edgy persona.

April seems annoyed by the turtles in this cartoon. Like they inconvenience her, more so than the other April's. Maybe that's why I really don't like this April. She just comes off as an ungrateful teenager. I like when April nurtures and helps the turtles like a big caring sister. Not a privileged little sister who gets to hang out in their lair. That's just how much feel though. Hopefully they expand on April.

I knew there was something that rubbed me the wrong way. Besides a couple of scenes, there's just something about her that I'm not too crazy about. I hope that will change in the future, but as for now, meh.

April acts like Leo's big sister in the new episode. So, yeeeees.
I love how excited she was when Leo tells her he likes a girl but gets deflated upon finding she's a Foot.
Leo: She's different! She's...
April: In the Foot Clan!
Leo: Yeah, but she's...
April: In the Foot Clan!
Leo: Look, I know I shouldn't be hanging out with her...
April: Yeah, and you know why? Cause she's in the Foot Clan!
Best scene ever.

She just seems like an arrogant kid. I liked watching splinter attack her ha. Sadly it hasn't humbled her any. Maybe Casey Jones will help in the future.

My biggest beef with this april here is that she seriously needs specific personality traits. Right now it's just...
She's kind when the show needs her to be kind, it's not a specific character trait pointed out.
She's sensitive when the episode needs her to be sensitive (like in monkey brains.) and it just stops.
She's sporty when the episode needs her to be sporty, she's sciency when the episode needs her to be sciency. She's "one of the guys." when the episode needs her to be one of the guys. She's "The girl." when the episode needs her to be the girl, like the newest one where she goes. "OMG gossip!" ones Leo tells her he met some-one.
There's no real consistency here nor any real character traits to lash unto and say. "Yes, that's this April, she's like that."
It would be nice if the show would just pick one, and give her some character traits that seems to stand on its own right.
Is she a book worm? Is she into sport like her clothes would suggest? does that mean she don't like gossip magazines? Does she like gossip magazines? That would make it a very girly point and some-thing to poke fun of.
Is she disgusted by the turtles teen-boys habits due to being a more cleanly girl and all, or are you enough "one of the guys." to just be fine with it? The Show never gives a specific but just swaps in and out between the two alternatives according to what the current writer thinks is funniest for that scene.
What? WHAT? What kind of person are you really April? I had hoped that I would know around now.

It's a wonder how she can still lay back and relax while her father is still being kidnapped lol.
And I agree, a little more flesh out on her character would be good.

Have to agree with every point. Every character in this show has a role, a purpose and a pretty distinct personality. Karai was in one episode and I feel I know more about her mind set than I do Aprils That is a problem. She needs better writing. The 2k3 April wasn't the most exciting but you knew where she stood and who she was.

It honestly is a bit amazing if you ask me.
What I have praised this show the most about is it's brilliant character writing, that these are the most distinctive turtles I have yet to see. If you took the masks off them and took their weapons away, then put them together in a room and had a new viewer watch that scene.
The new viewer would probably still get whom is who and what their relations are by just watching them interact. That's amazing character.
And they are all three dimensional as well, their traits both have advantages and disadvantages, and that's just good character writing.
Yes, I am totally getting whom Karai is now just based on her short appearance, how she is more specifically as a character and have a fairly good idea how she would handle specific situations.
With April I got nothing! well.. she likes to mindlessly barge into places on her own. When the episode calls for it. I guess that is supposed to paint her as a "Cool, idependent, character whom likes to take action into own hands."
But unlike Raph where we know that's a specific character trait, and we get to see how that is a part of who he is, and how it can become a problem. (the framing acknowledges it to be a problem ones in a while) with April it's just sort of there.. but only when the episode needs it.

The cartoons characterization on the turtles has been better than any of the cartoons when it comes to individual personalities. I definitely agree. They're probably treading lightly with April because they have big plans for her and because they want her to be relatable to a wide range of female viewers. In any case I think it will get better. The show is still so good.

See.. that's the problem with just having one girl which every single girl in the world is supposed to relate to.
You can't! at this point, I am very very sure that the small girls out there are relating way better to the turtles than April!
Heck, go to any convention and see how many women that are walking around the place cosplaying as male characters.
Why does that happen? male characters are often just better written, with more distinctive personality and traits, so we girls relate better to them.
Hell, lots of girls grows so frustrated that they just straight out genderbend the pre-existing male characters in either fanart or fanfic cause girls like to imagine being those characters to, without having to shift gender yourself, they relate better and fantasies better about them.
Go to Deviantart and check out all the fan-art, then check out whom drew it.. girls can relate fine with boy characters, again.. because boys characters often are just written better, the girls relates better to them.
I'm of the female gender, my favourite character in this show is Donnie, so urhm.. yeah..
I sure hope they have a plan for her, just some-thing. I would actually really like if they tried to empathise some more about how she must have to struggle between real life (School, auntie and ordinary friends.) and the other life, the turtle life. there could come an interesting story out of that and flesh April more out. Tell us what she used to do before there was turtles, what she wants to do. Would give us some weight.

Don't worry. There'll be so much of April I'll expecting the fans to call her a Mary Sue.
Heck, there was a meltdown when she supposedly has a strong empathy sense, so she's on her way.
