Greetings, All! There may be snow and blizzards where most of us are right now, but on this show, the twitterpation of Spring is in the air... :P

(Bwaha, I love you Krang!! :D)
I kid, I kid.. but we have a new arrival of a longstanding favorite amongst the generations of fans.
Karai has been many things - Leader of the Japanese Foot clan stopping an out of control faction of the Elite Guard, the ever loyal daughter to Shredder, Granddaughter of the Shredder, even the Lady Shredder. She's fought everything from the turtles to Utroms to strange Aztec monsters. Now we have a fresh new glimpse of our anti-hero: A slightly older teenager, with one of those strange two-tone salad bowl haircuts... bored with life and listening to her 'father', the Shredder.
It seems Leonardo is in the same kind of rut as our new Karai. He's been enduring Raphael's constant criticisms and Splinter's scrutiny on his handling of his brothers in countless situations. So he's thrown in the towel, told Raph to try being in charge... basically, go sit and spin. Personally, I'd cheer for Leo if he Did. Taking on the job of new leader has put Leo through the ringer quite a bit. We've seen him flung around by both Father And Foot alike...
But now this mysterious new fighter has appeared... and Leo's not quite sure what to make of her. And she's all for shirking the responsibility of the adults to do whatever she wants. I'm sure she gives Shredder a run for his money. Which would be harder to keep control of - a clan or a teenage daughter?
A LOT of rumors and speculation going around the fandom is that Karai is actually the long lost daughter of Splinter, Hamato Miwa. Splinter had explained that Shen had died, and he had 'lost' his daughter during the major fire back in Japan. The bad blood between Yoshi and Saki had just gone too far... what a heart wrenching thing for Splinter to find out, that his daughter could be alive - but is now the daughter of his most hated rival? No doubt she's been taught that he's the worst piece of humanity in existence...
It sounds almost like parents poisoning kids against each other during a bad divorce. Everyone loses.
So, will our star-crossed lovers survive the hatred between the clans?
Is Karai going to be an enemy or an ally?
Will we learn more about the photograph, and what happened to create the rift?
And is Karai ever going to change that haircut?
STAY TUNED!

Ep Notes.
Snakeweed was back!
Karai was AWESOME!
And Shredder is not a nice dad. Like at all. He threatened to kill her.

Thought it was a good episode. Great intro for Karai. Still not a fan of the design (mainly her hair) but I can live with it as long as her character is interesting.
Great way to bring Snakeweed back into the mix without making him the primary focus of the episode.

Well, Snakeweed may be gone for good after he got frozen by Raph, but Snakeweed was as much as the focus of the episode as Karai was, who basically just retreated after Leo was tied up by Snakeweed. Karai is Shredder's daughter, and April looks good in her pajamas. It was a bit silly that people would be kidnapped by Snakeweed just because he would use them as fertilizer. Raphael shows that he isn't the best leader by being repetitive with decisions, even though he was the most potent in battle, even bailing out Donatello with an ailing Michelangelo. That said, I wish we got a bit more out of Karai, and the powerful ninja sword remains collected in dust. Don's relationship with April continues to ebb, even if he feels a bit cocky.
Overall: 8/10

Wow just wow that was a great episode. First of all, the return of snakeweed :tgrin: I thought he would never return! And his lair, future playset!!!! Next, I loved how karai and Leo were half-friends. And how the team can't survive broken up and now Mikey learned where fertilizer came from:o. I hope we see more Karai soon.sorry for the jumbled up review, I'm just so happy:tgrin:

Glad to see Snakeweed back (didn't know when we'd see him again).
I'm a little confused on how his "tracking spores" worked. Was he able to sense Raphael's location on the roof and that made the spore start to ignite? And would he still be able to track Donatello and Mikey in the sewers or did their spores wear off?

Think he was after the first one he could find, or Mikey crushed his when he was laying on the couch, I don't know.
Snakeweed is back! :tsmile:
This was a great episode! I love Karai, she seems like she is going to be a fun character in the future. It was nice to see April's apartment again. Donnie's line about "April texted ME!" cracked me up.

This is now my favorite episode so far. Here are some things I really liked.
-Snakeweed returning. I was very surprised that he came back and I really think he is a cool villain. I don't see how the turtles will ever defeat him though, as his heart is seen pumping yet again. I can't wait to see Snakeweed in even more future episodes.
-Karai. Karai seems like a very cool villain. I like how she's vey mysterious, and how you can't tell if she really wants to kill Leo or if she's doing it just because her father told her to. I really think she is Miwa, especially since Leo said he sensed some good in her.
-Raphael. For once, I actually liked Raph! Instead of just being mean to/bullying/hurting his brothers, we actually got to see Raphael strugling with the responsibilities of being a leader and worrying about his brothers. Even though I know this won't happen, I wish Raph would act like this in more episodes.
-April and Leo's scene. With this scene, I really felt like Leo was a true teenage boy (how he's supposed to feel, I'm looking at you 2003 series) with his first crush. I loved how April acted like a typical teenage girl ("Tell me everything!" *Nods at every thing Leo says*) and I really liked how she was worried about Leo and pretty much assumed Karai was evil since she was in the foot clan. I honestly thought April was funnier here then when she's a main character. I can't wait to see her in school with the turtles next week.
All in all this was a great episode that, again, leaves me wanting more and more. They really teased us a LOT here, with Shredder, Karai, Snakeweed still living, and Leo still having a crush on Karai. I cannot wait for next week (I say that in every discussion, don't I :tlol:).

Overall, awesome episode. Love how Leo and Karai interacted. Favorite lines:
Donnie: "April texted me. Wait, April texted me?! THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY...!" (Looks back at Mikey) "Oh, right."
Mikey: "Man, where does all his come from?"
Donnie: "Uh, Mikey...(Whispers)
Mikey: "Don't they know we live down here?!"
Mikey: Mmm, pepperoni.
Leo: Works everytime.

God I love Snakeweed. There is just something about that fart noise making plant mutant that makes me get goosebumps whenever he appears.
I not only love Karai's design, but Kelly Hu did a phenomenal job voicing her. I actually didn't want this episode to end. I can't wait to see Karai appear again. Very well written, well acted episode. Am I the only one who after seeing this episode wanitng a Karai action figure ? I guess I have shell out (no pun intended) $80 + for the figure based on the 2003 series (a complete figure with the accessories).

I'm sure they'll make a figure of the new Karai. Wait awhile before you go spending 80 dollars on that old sub par figure.
Anyway, it's her in the shredder armor, that was personally for me a low point in her character story.

Im not really sure what to say about this episode that has not already been said in this thread... It was a great episode.
Do you think Snakeweed's itty bits will wiggle their way back together.. or do you think his "heart" is like a seed and will plant itself and grow into a new Snakeweed body?
I think the heart seed thing would be cool.. but that is pure speculation on my part.

I have been a big fan of the show since day one, heck, since the very first "mutation in progress" teaser video... there have been strong eps and so-so eps... but this is the first ep I have to say is nearly perfect! 9.5/10. Only reason I don't just give it a ten is because after seeing this episode I sense so much more potential from this show than before, I know it can get even BETTER. now to rewatch it again before bed :P
some highlights for me:
* karai, perfect blend of badassery, mystery, sexyness, entire package all bundled into one :P
* karai/leo rivalry/relationship -- wow :P Leo is already falling HARD... and now he has her sword :o can't wait to see what happens next with them.
* dual plotlines... hard to pull off in a 22min show but they balanced it PERFECTLY
* snakeweed's return! he shows up right at the beginning of the ep like out of NOWHERE. reminds me of The Dark Knight when batman is chasing down scarecrow right at the start... really gives you a sense of things happening in-between episodes, makes the universe feel more real and believable. great.
* raph trying to lead, then realizing leo is indeed the perfect leader for the group. love how he very hastily welcomes leo back near the end before the snakeweed fight. hahaha, so pitch perfect
* raph's finishing move against snakeweed... WOW, will go down in history as one of the best battle shots ever in a TMNT ep I'm sure
*april/leo talking out his "girl probs" -- april is such a good friend :P
* way more, I need to absorb it all first :)
so much to enjoy!
Already seeing the action figure lust setting in in this thread. Big mistake on Playmates part to not have a Karai figure for the early Spring/Summer 2013 wave. Would have been a great seller.

I thought the Leatherhead and Rat Kings episodes were better, but this was a nice intro for Karai.
I guess the writers felt Karai couldn't hold the episode herself, hence the Snakeweed B-plot. Is it because she's not a mutant that they think kids won't be interested?
So as expected, Karai called Shredder, "father." I guess the cartoons will forever make Karai related to Shredder. (And I realize she could be Miwa)

This was an interesting episode. It kinda reminded me of the OT episode that introduced Lotus Blossom.
And hey! We see the sword of the guy a certain Samurai rabbit was named after! :D Wonder if that's gonna be part of a plot point later on?

I did! As he was pronouncing it, in my mind I'm like "Is Raph saying... omg he is!" it's great to hear him say it. But I'm glad he's not shouting it all the time like Mikey :P Raph is a bit more reserved on that kind of thing.
Am I the only one who wished Snakeweed stayed dead? I like the character, but it would have been cool to see the Turtles actually "kill" one of their enemies.
For a second as he was shattering I thought "oh snap they done killed snakeweed!" But I quickly realized they'd pull the same thing as S01E02... which is fine. I think it's a bit early to off him, he has some potential and a great design. But I would like to see them permanently take down some enemies in the future. We'll see. And let's not forget, because of his regenerative abilities it gives the turtles great opportunities to "kill" enemies in awesome ways (as seen in this ep) without there having to be major consequences. I like that part, too.

You're right. But she seemed to be used to it, she didn't even act like she was taking him seriously until right at the very end of the convo. She's very callous from having grown up under Shredder's hard tutelage, no doubt. She's can take it.
Another point for my list:

But more than likely Raph was just going to get Leo and bring him back.. something that they probably didn't think was going to get so dangerous.

It's an episode of Raph trying the leader ropes and Leo longing for a sense of personal freedom, it makes sense the two of them realized an epiphany and faced Snakeweed together.

I was purely amazed about this Episode!
Snakeweed's Lair kinda reminded me on 'Alien' and I liked it.
Mikey was just great..caring so much about that Pizza-Delivery-Guy, Rapheal's conflict with "I can't lead and protect my Brothers at the same Time" and of course the whole Karai/Leo Story (and on a random side-note: I feel oddly enough alright with those two, despite their species-differences).
I agree with many of here, the Balcony-scene with April was brilliant xD
She at first completly not interested to talk and he started to tap his Fingerstips nervously onto each other, telling her he met a Girl..suddenly she's all excited and want to know everything about it xD
This somehow reminds me on my Days in School: If it was about who had a crush on who, everyone wanted to know xD Ah well, Teenagers.
The ending Conversation was funny as well
"She threw her Sword at your Head!"
"She threw it nearly my Head."
and then this "Well, nobodys perfect"..Leo seemed so happy here. |D

Pretty good episode. I like Raph's panic attack in the heat of battle. Added a nice dynamic to his character and showed the importance of Leonardos role to the team. Karai looks so stupid though and the blonde bowl cut thing in the back isn't helping. I like the 2k3 version much better, personality as well so far. Could have used some more splinter :-)

Wow. Just wow. What an enjoyable episode.:tsmile: Great to see Leonardo get the spotlight again.:tcool: Plus, seems that Raph had an important role in this one, too.
I'm happy to see Snakeweed again. In fact, it makes me want to buy the action figure right away. It just seemed silly, however, for Leo to kick him in the heart instead of stab him. But, what the hey? It's a kid show. Still, we probably didn't need to see him kill him if Nick would allow those kind of shots.
As for Karai - she was cool. This is the first time where I actually liked her. In fact, her relationship with Leo in this show was like watching that Batman/Catwoman love/hate relationship. Here's hoping we see more of that. In fact, I would like her to be good and bad her own way. Then that will show that the turtles have good reason to trust her (or not).:twink: To bad her relationship with her father is not that loving. I mean, if I recall in those old bios, it said that Shredder loved Miwa and treated her with kindness (correct me, if I'm wrong).:tconfuse: After seeing this, something tells me that she may not be Miwa. But I could be wrong. In fact, I'm guessing she is Miwa because somehow Leo senses good in her, and she feels like she doesn't belong with her "father."
What I really loved in this episode was Raphael proving to be a good guy. I mean, he's a hero, but sometimes he can be obnoxious. I'm glad he realized that Leo was picked as the leader for a reason. Raph could do better, but he proved that he still needed some work. Just saying "Go for the head" constantly won't help. Sometimes as a leader, you need to take good care of your strategies so you know what to do (whether you succeed or fail). Leo has been a good leader since episode 1. He seems to be smart enough to develop strategies.
One of my favorite scenes, however, was when Mikey looks at Leo's red eyes and thought he was crying.:tlol:

You're right. But she seemed to be used to it, she didn't even act like she was taking him seriously until right at the very end of the convo. She's very callous from having grown up under Shredder's hard tutelage, no doubt. She's can take it.
Another point for my list:
* Leo vs. foot clan, reminded me of Raph vs. the foot in the first TMNT live action film. Wonder if it was meant to be an homage of sorts.
In mirage and the 2k3 Series its Leo fighting the Foot alone. So if anything its a nod to mirage.

I kept thinking the end of the episode would show Karai steal the sword, why was that plot just dropped?
I could have seen it function like the Sword of Tengu from the 4kids series.

I think it was just there to point out, that Leo likes Karai, but not enough to do bad things.
and Karai probably saw the monster and decided that sword could wait for another day :3

Beat me to it. The movie kept the same plot but switched out Leo for Raph. The 2k3 toon brought it back to its roots. But yeah, when the Foot showed up, for a second there I thought Leo was about to get his ass kicked and thrown through a window, haha. :D
Fantastic episode. I have no words. It's great to be a turtle fan right now, that's all I'm gonna say.

Does anyone think Snakeweed will work with the Kraang and Foot Clan again like he did in his original episodes? You would think Kraang and Foot Clan would see him as a great ally to have against the turtles. He seems more like a solo villain now which works well for him but you would think he would join up with the Kraang and Foot Clan since they have a common enemy. And besides, Snakeweed isn't a complete monster. He could still be reasoned with like Xever and Bradford when they were mutated. Although it's interesting because I think out of everyone who got mutated in the series so far, Snakeweed comes the closest to complete monster while the others got mutated but still retained most of their personality.

Awesome episode! The writers in this show really love the Sci-fi/Horror genre, Snakeweed's lair; total nod to Aliens! I kept waiting for some sort of plant-type-facehugger thing to pop out! Snakeweed's "death" perhaps a nod to Terminator 2? And also I sensed a little Star Wars in there with the whole, "I can sense the good in her" thing:twink:
Also, it donned on me that Snakeweed is the perfect character to “kill off” every time he shows up. He can't die so it's a great tool for the writers to use to show different ways that the turtles could destroy something living, without actually killing it or showing death in a kid's show. Anyone get what I'm trying to say?

I loved this episode. I found myself laughing when Mikey started to complain about the smell and Donnie told him what was in it. "Don't they know we live down here!" :tlol: And again with the fertilizer.
The scene between Leo and April was great. Ah, teenage love/crush drama. A nice touch.
Snakeweed.:teek: Should of known he'd be back. The lair was amazing looking. Creepy, yet amazing.
It was nice to see Raph spaz out, realizing how tough it really was being leader, and worrying about Mikey. And shouting "Sorry" at Leo. I didn't expect that. And neither did Leo.
Karai in action was nice to see. The hair is still causes me to raise my brow, but the voice acting and action makes up for it.

Sweet! Just watched the episode. I loved it!
- Did anyone else think Snakeweed's voice is a bit like Gollum's from the Lord of the Rings?
- Leo's wheezing sounds when Karai threw the flash grenade at him made my chest hurt. They sounded painful!
- Splinter: Now you see the price of leadership, responsibility.
Raph: Yeah.. I hate it.
Splinter: So you understand Leonardo's burden.
This moment was so emotional to me. It is definitely a character growth moment for Raph.
- Also, Mikey's discovery of where sewage and fertilizer come from. Poor naiive baby!
This episode was full of great character interaction. Can't wait to see what's in store for us next week!

Like Karai much more than I thought I would.
Really, her situation, lines and good voice-acting is really what elevates this character whom could have so easily have gone wrong.
I do like Leos crush, which is much more subtle in nature than Donnies, but that's the fun thing about love and crush's, they are all different, and Leos is certainly more complicated than Donnies.
There was some genuine strong tender character moments here, see what you can do with strong characters ^^
Simply using snake-weed as todays monster was a great idea, recognisable, easily just stuffed in there cause he has all-ready been introduced, the episode is not about him any-way, and we are able to kill him in so many delightful inventive ways without actually killing him.
He is a great stock monsters X)
And oh Mikey, how naive you are.

enjoyed the episode immensly as usual...I wanted to add two things:
-so kooool that snakeweeds lair resembled the aliens queens hive in aliens(even with the floor..) and he may need fertilizer in order to grow back more of the plant that he is made off...as a precaution so to say as he knows he had died before(ep 2), he could very well die again, so he'd need another body to grow...
-I loved it that raphael was shouting booyakashaa as he was splintering up the frozen snakeweed...that showed were his thoughts were still....

Wow. An awesome episode and one of my favorites. I really liked Karai's intro and how Leo really wants to see good in her. However, I have a feeling that down the road, things aren't going to go well for our blue masked Turtle as he realizes how wrong he really is. As for the ambush, I didn't think he was going to get beaten up that easily, though that might be saved for later down the road. You never know. Loved Don telling Mikey where fertilizer comes from as well as what's in sewage. That was great. April's talk with Leo was awesome, too and you can see she has his best interests at heart. I have a feeling Splinter will find out about Karai and Leo's relationship and will not be happy about it. Overall, an awesome episode.
Fave quotes:
Mikey: Aww, he's gone.
Don: Don't worry, Mikey. Leo just needs some space. *pauses* You were talking about the pizza guy, weren't you?
Mikey: Yeah.
Splinter: Leadership is not about being appreciated, it is about responsibility! It doesn't matter that the burden is heavy, it matters that you carry it.
Leo: Let's see you fight against someone who can actually see.
Karai: Let's see you fight against someone who's better than you.
Leo: Let's see you fight...um...Let's just go.
Mikey: Mmm, pepperoni.
Leo: Works every time.
Raph: I'm sorry.
Leo: What was that? I didn't hear you.
Raph: I said I'm SORRY!
Leo: Uh, apology accepted.
Raph: So, what's with this girl who tried to kill you?
Leo: She didn't try to kill me. She saved me.
Raph: She threw a sword at your head.
Leo: She threw it near my head.
Raph: She's in the Foot Clan.
Leo: Nobody's perfect.
Raph: All is forgiven, you're the leader again, welcome back.
See you next week, guys.

Before I get into the episode, I just want to say that while I enjoyed this new take on Karai enough, I don't see why they're calling her Karai. I know the Image books are pretty obscure, but it would have made me way happier if they called her Pimiko and saved "Karai" for later, using her in a capacity closer to her original take. I guess 4kids ruined her forever.
Great great episode though. Just as much of a Raph story as it was a Leo story. I loved the scene when they brought Mikey back to the lair, showed how Raph's a huge softie.
I loved the scene with Leo and April haha. That reminded me of me and a friend from high school, I also have a cousin who totally acts like that whenever the subject of girls comes up.
Space Heroes was hilarious, and so was Leo saying "oh thank goodness" when Snakeweed shows up so he didn't have to explain himself to Raph.
Speaking of Snakeweed, it was cool to see him again, but his current story line is actually pretty depressing when you think about it. He doesn't have some big evil plot, the poor bastard's just trying to eat enough to survive lol.
Kinda wish we would have got more Shredder/Karai scenes, mainly because I loooove hearing KMR's Shredder. Good thing The Gauntlet's on right now!
I went to watch this off my DVR this morning, and it was currently being recorded. Karai looks less like a werewolf than previously feared. Other than that, I was pleased with this ep. :tsmile: I guess Shredder's lack of parenting skills rolled-over from 2K3. :trazz:

Not really. Leo's not going to blindly agree with everything Splinter tells him and it probably won't be the last time either. The whole episode was about Leo wanting more outside just being the leader all the time after all.
It kind of made me think back to when he asked to be the leader back inthe first episode and Splinter telling him how leadership is something he'd have to learn for himself. A 'trails and tribulations' sort of thing.

This episode was fantastic, I'm glad I waited until I was wide awake to watch it, because had I watched it after the Friday night partying I would jhave definitely missed the epicness.
Karai was so well done, I loved her attitude and her style. I just wish that they hadn't ruined her entrance with the promo pic that turned most of the fandom against her before she had even showed up in an episode. Seeing her design in action made everything work for me. Though I knew as soon as she walked into Shredder's chamber that the father line was coming. I hoped hoped hoped that they would have forgone that little caveat. I mean I have no problem with Leo having feelings for some random female member of the Foot Clan, but when that female member is the daughter of the Shredder it makes me shudder in the wrong way. Even if it is revealed that she is Miwa (which I hope isn't the case, I'd prefer if Karai is Shredder's biological daughter and Miwa his adopted who he doted his affection upon, would add a nice dynamic) it still wouldn't feel right to me.
Though I will say, that this episode nailed the Leo / Karai dynamic and has set a high bar for the IDW comics to surpass. I don't see them going that way in the comics, but after seeing how well it can be done in the 2k12 cartoon I really hope they don't.
As always I love when they have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles act like Teenagers. This episode nailed that, Leo not being sure of how to proceed with having a girl he likes in his life perfectly reflected that first high school crush. Not to mention the fact that Leo going to a television show and his comment about relationships being complicated after seeing his hero disintegrate his problems away, pitch perfect way of a teenager dealing with those feelings.
Not to mention the show also increased my favorite part of the TMNT lore, the Mike/Raph relationship. They are best buds and I don't think if it had been Donatello had been knocked out that Raphael would have experienced the same level of panic. It is always nice to see that relationship enter other works and I was nervous that with the callousness that they have given the Nick Raph it might not have room to enter into the equation.
We also finally got to see Raph question Leonardo as a leader. It is another one of those beats that each Turtle incarnation needs to hit and I really liked the way that they handled it. In the past it always appears to be completely instigated by Raphael. Having Leonardo also want to escape from the pressures of being in charge was a welcome change and also increased the reasoning behind his receptibility to the advances of Karai.
I feel like the episode did misstep though in introducing the sword for them to steal and not having it resolve or actually have any play. As soon as it was brought up, I hoped that we might get the opportunity to see the Shredder as Oroku Saki, and that Karai was going to steal it to rebel against her Father. To see the plotline unresolved makes me hope it will come back up, but I wish they hadn't taken the time to introduce it, just feels like filler as is.
Also not having Splinter embrace the role reversal of Leo and Raph as a lesson seemed out of character for him. Having Raph finally get the chance to carry the burden and for Leo to see how hard it can be to take orders from others would have made them both better overall. Granted that lesson was still learned, but Splinter not recognizing it as a teaching opportunity seemed very out of character for him.
Overall a fantastic episode that really built up a lot of the world. Finally seeing one of the mutants of the week come back and answering all the questions we've had about what happens after their changes was great. I am very excited to see the next episode which is exactly what a kids show should hope to achieve each week.
* raph's finishing move against snakeweed... WOW, will go down in history as one of the best battle shots ever in a TMNT ep I'm sure
All that was missing was Raph saying "Smile you son of a bitch" before he threw his Sai and blew up the Liquid Nitrogen container, bringing the perfect JAWS reference to it's necessary conclusion.
Plus I mean come on that Booyakasha downward strike was so Mortal Kombat fatality.
So as expected, Karai called Shredder, "father." I guess the cartoons will forever make Karai related to Shredder. (And I realize she could be Miwa)
Awful awful awful... Seriously I wish they hadn't done this.

Indeed. I'm already looking foward to getting more insight on her relationship with Shredder. From how she acts toward him. She's still loyal to him but unlike her previous incarnations, she has a bit more of attitude/spunk that could create some friction between the two.

Funny :P In that case I think he's written 2 of the very best eps so far as well as 1 of the worst O__O (again, turtle temper is not a bad ep but compared to the others I think it's a bit weak)
Interestingly he seems to enjoy playing up the raph/leo dynamic as it was a key element to both 'temper' and 'new girl' -- with temper being more raph focused and girl being more leo focused.
His eps are going to be worth watching out for!

Really? I though the 2003 cartoon defined the cartoon for a wider audience including many mega fans such as myself. Its best to combine what little that Pimiko character hd into Karai otherwise that character would be forogtten and buried like mosto f the Image/Next Mutation timeframe should be.
I definitely see Karai in her as we know her in the 2003 cartoon yet she is different at the same time. Karai has a more personal connection now to The Shredder that he is human once again as he should be as well as to the TMNT themselves. Suppose she is indeed Splinter's lost daughter. When seemingly smitten Leo discovers she is his step-sister(in this ersion anyway).

In response to Leo's muttering about not wanting the burden, I can see that. He's not happy with the way things have turned out and that Splinter pretty much said he didn't have the authority to make Raph leader. Splinter's stern talk with Leo was the last straw for him, and I think he reacted like any other teenager would when ordered about by their parents. I liked that touch that they gave him that he's not always the obedient son as he's been seen to be in other incarnations.

And I'm not sure yet if I think the voice fits her.
I reall hope you wouldn't of preferred a voice like the 2k3 show, cause stereotypical Japanese is not a good Karai voice at all. To me this one was just perfect, and so much sass in it, she's great.

Wooo! Thanks to this episode today while rereading a TMNT issue from IDW, while Karai's voice in my head started out the stereotypical Japanese accent from 2k3 but then it eventually transitioned to Kelly Hu's voice. Thank you Kelly Hu!
Oh and didn't mention it in my earlier posts on the ep, but I just watched the scene with her and Shredder again, love the way she sasses him, that's something 2k3 Karai and her unwavering loyalty would never do. That right there alone should show to everyone that she is a much more interesting and 3 dimensional character.

Kinda like what they're doing here. So far the only filler characters are Spider Bytes and Pidgeon Pete. I mean, you can't ignore Snakeweed since he was in the premiere and returns in an episode with Karai in it. You can't ignore Falco because he became the Rat King, and Rockwell was another example of Falco's cruelty. Let's hope that if they do bring Spider Bytes back it's in another awesome non-filler episode.

What show were you watching? I'm perfectly fine with you not liking the new Karai, but to say she's a retread of 2k3 Karai is just plain insane.
2k3 Karai was just boring, stupidly unwaveringly loyal to Shredder, really just a plain bore in the long run with a stereotypical japanese accent.
This Karai was nothing like that. The only similarity I can think of is the whole Shredder being her father thing, which even that is different since she actually believes he's her father since in 2k3 she knew he was her adopted father. And an alien.
Sorry for the rant, I just don't understand what you mean in the least.

The father/daughter relationship to The Shredder was straight outta 2K3. So was Shredder's ****ty parenting of her and her conflictedness. She's told to take out The Turtles, but she doesn't. She may seem like more of a free-spirit right now, but that may be revealed to not be the truth later on. So, it really does seem like 2K3 Karai mixed with the rebellious teen stereotype from where I'm standing.

Yeah, but 2K3 Karai never talked back to her father and just went along with whatever he said. This Karai doesn't do that right away and even talks back to him, reminding him of how the Turtles escaped from him. That was awesome, and when she said that line, I yelled, "Burn!"

Also Shredder doesn't seem to mind of Karai's rebel look going on there, and Karai seems to do things for her amusement, not because her father ordered her to. She's also not that afraid of him by saying that he let the Turtles slip from his fingers.
So yeah, she's already divorcing her 2K3 counterpart.

Yeah, I like how she is defiant and doesn't do what shredder says all the time. I think it gives her more of a charecter.:tgrin:
I think it's Karai's facade of unwavering loyalty that makes her interesting, not the backchat. But with that hairdo...*snaps*
She has a similar relationship to Leo than 2k3 Karai and is Shredder's daughter. Her not being 100% obedient is far from a "HUGE DIFFERENCE'.

Karai in 2K3 was stuck trying to be like the Mirage version while still loyal to Shredder. They couldn't have it both ways since you CAN'T have Karai try to act like her Mirage counterpart if she's under Shredder's command. And you CAN'T try to include her sense of honor from the Mirage comics if you still want to make her do whatever Shredder says anyway. 2K3 tried to do their fresh take on Karai AND make her like the Mirage version but it just didn't work.
The Nick version goes for a new take on her without having to limit her character.

True. I always saw Leo and Karai as having respect for each other in the 2K3 series and nothing more. In this version, due to their age and not being forced to rely on Mirage counterparts, Karai actually asked Leo out (sorta/kinda) and Leo actually went to April for advice on this girl he likes. It's like now the characters can finally act out instead of just hinting it.

It'll probably last up to 5 seasons. That's when we have to get worried though, some shows don't have this happen to them, like Spongebob, but Nick seems to cancel quite a few shows after the 5th season is up.

This episode was alright. Had a lot of up and down moments. I loved all the character development of Leonardo and Raphael, especially Raphael and it was nice to finally see the rivalry between the two front and center a little. I have always felt it's the two of them pushing one another that really helps each character excel.
I am personally over the shipping going on within the show. It's not why I watch the Turtles and the humor of it is just starting to run dry with me. That said I did like Karai's character. At least she had a personality which at the end of day is more the the 4Kids Karai ever had. She was still not as awesome as the original Mirage Karai but as long as she has to be placed in this position of being Shredder's daughter the character is in my opinion never going to reach her full potential.
One thing I would have liked to have seen would have been Don and Mike react a little to Leo handing over the leadership to Raph. Somehow I don't think this is something that would make them happy, especially Don who has kind of a strained relationship already with Raphael. Yet they seemed to just accept it.
I wasn't a big fan of the Leo and April scene myself. Yeah I know he's a teen, but it was almost too woobie-fide for me for the character. Still overall solid episode, not my favorite but worth it just for the realizations Leo and Raph came to in the end.

They said in one of those Mutations in progress that the show has been renewed through 2015. Look at the math:
Season 2 will begin in Fall of 2013 (that's this year) and go to spring 2014.
Season 3 will begin in Fall of 2014 and then go to Spring of 2015.
That's pretty much, "new episodes committed through 2015." A Season 4 would then start in the Fall of 2015...if it comes. I'm sure it will though.

I don't know of any other version of Leo being open about not wanting to be the leader due to the burden. I could be wrong...
Leo just left the team, which can be seen as a controversial decision. But...I think it was interesting.
I can imagine that it would really suck to have that as a burden especially if you are having doubts or just don't want to. But really Leo is the best between the four for the job.
I actually found Leo just leaving the others and his whole scene with Karai to be kind of liberating.
I mean I didn't want him to abandon his brothers, but Leo needed some time away. I actually wish Splinter had gotten his point across with out scolding Leo, because I can sympathise with him.
I can see why Leo might admire and envy Karai, because she may seem more "free" in some ways...able to just cut loose, where he can't. But we as watchers know that it isn't the whole reality with Karai.

I think Leo's journey this episode fits this Leo where it probably would not have fit any other version of him. Nick Leo has not spent his entire life being groomed by Splinter to be the leader, to silently burden the responsibility as other Leo's have. Nick Leo has suddenly has this great role thrust upon him, granted by his own choice but it still must be extremely cumbersome to someone so young and not as readily prepared.
I was proud of Leo when in the end he still made the choice to do what was right and that in the end his integrity was more important to him then anything else. I also hope that maybe in this version we can have a team that has a better understand of just how difficult Leo's role actually is. Something I sometimes feel that gets over looked both by the characters around him and even the fandom in general.

Y'know, other then his questionable choices in role models, personally I like this version of Leo so much better then any other. He's more of a real person, turtle, whatever, then any of the up tight perfect boy from all the other versions.

He isn't "perfect" in other versions and possibly uptight but being raised the way he was I don't think he can completely be blamed. I have no issue with people preferring one version of Leo over another, but I am getting tired of fandom looking down on previous Leo's.
Nick Leo has good points but still has a lot of growing to do and I feel is slowly going to turn into the Leo everyone finds so perfect and I have often heard also called boring.

I hate Karai's portrayal in the 4KIDS series, it was idiotic to make her Shredder's lapdog daughter, who had a sense of "honor". It was stupid, demeaning to the character Karai.
This episode was great, Karai had a well fleshed character, it was very fun seeing her play with Leonardo and it's okay with some flirty moments since they both are teens this time.
I really liked Raph's failed leadership in this episode and how he breaks down when things go bad, and Splinter's words are harsh yet true about leadership and is a reality slap, much like his comment on fighting fair.
Mikey's reaction to sewage and fertilizer was genuinely funny.
April and Leo moment was very nice, and shows that the turtles have proper emotions and aren't just fighting machines. And April had a very good moment as a friend and not just associate.
The fight scenes are awesome, as always. Snakeweed was interesting, seems like his mind is more weed-like now, maybe he'll be a less sexy Poison Ivy to this show.
What I didn't like. Karai calling Shredder "Father", dammit. I was hoping it wouldn't be true, especially when Shredder was so threatening to her. In the old Shredder bio for the Nick cartoon it strands he loves his daughter, this seems to be apparently scrapped. There was no love in that scene whatsoever, and Karai is now again Shredder's daughter, not the lapdog she was in the previous cartoon, but still.
Pimiko is Shredder's actually biological daughter, why can't they use her? I guess it falls down that Shredder had to be the big boss, and no Karai can ever be top dog.
I was hoping that if, if they went down that idiotic road again, at least have Shredder care for and love his daughter. Give us some humanity in him and not just bad ass mega dire villain, hellbent on revenge.

Just to play devil's advocate, what if in the scene was Shredder's way of showing tough love for Karai. He didn't actually touch her, just postured in a menacing way that I have the feeling is his pretty standard way of dealing with everyone.
I mean Karai was able to get a laugh at Shredder's vendetta and you can see she over all doesn't take his obsession too seriously which to me says she doesn't feel that scared of him.
Honestly not knocking someone around is pretty nice for Shredder, I think I would be more weirded out if he like started hugging her or something.

Seems too subtle for a cartoon, nothing in that scene showed that he had any fatherly feelings for her, it was very much the same the scene with Brad and Xever.

Shredder merely threatened Karai with his blades. It's pretty much like a parent threatening to leave a child outside the car if they misbehave on long journey (but in Shredder's case, he's waay more extreme :trazz:). Just a threat, nothing more.
I don't think Shredder ever hit her or anything before, otherwise she wouldn't have the gull to talk back so smugly in that episode. It's a complex father-daughter relationship. He, as a father, demands Karai to respect and honor him, yet he wouldn't treat her like he does his Foot Clan army and lowly servants. It's a struggle within him to uphold his authority as a monarch yet still maintaining good blood relationship with his daughter.
Oooh, this show's deep. *got goosebumps*

All this talk about Splinter scolding Leo and it seeming a little character out for him.
Am I the only one whom gets the feeling Splinter just did it because he immediately became concerned about the other turtles? He got annoyed at Leo for leaving his other sons alone at a battlefield and was concerned about them, and that's where the scolding comes from in that single moment in time.
That's just my thought on the subject.
And yeah, Karais and Shredders relationship seems rather cold, which in this connection I can absolutely take.
Cause, the way Shredder treats Karai actually explains Karais personality and why she would become a rebell.
Having grown up under very strict guidelines and a father whom treats you like that, yeah.. ones you reach the teen years you would become a rebell.
And yup, he talked to her as if she was just another hench-men, which is very very cold.
But hey, he is the lord of 'evil' in this univers.

If you as the elder brother went out playing in the wild, but you got fed-up, got back and left them all alone, any parent will freak out. They're freaking 15 btw.

Actually, 4Kids Leo was acting moody due to guilt of not being able to come up with a better plan to save themselves, but that just made him more obsessed with training than with not wanting to be a leader. Nick Leo is different in that he wants to be able to not have the burden thrust upon him anymore and maybe he realizes just how hard it is to not be able to cut loose and have fun when you're the leader. I really liked this side of Leo in the episode as it gave him more depth. And I liked how Raph found out that it's not so easy to be the leader.

I finally saw the episode and I think it was very well done. Having a a Leo centered episode made me appreciate his character a little more, since we see the things he has to deal with like leading the team. I wasn't too fond of the flirty moments, since we already have ship tease with Donnie and April but I can look past it. The humor, when there were little bits and pieces of it, made me laugh (like Donnie getting a text from April :tlol: ) I also liked how April warned Leo about Karai. I really want Karai to return and I want a story arch revolving around her because despite how I feel about her design her character is very interesting. :)

Just curious, when did it get the 3rd season renewal? I know it's likely but has there been official confirmation? I figured they would wait until after the S2 premiere to announce S3 (just like they did for S2 after the series premiere).
A toyfair before the show even premiered had signs saying there were already three 26-ep seasons ordered. For a show that cost them $60-million to be able to make on their own terms, it's just fair they give it that much opportunity to prove its worth.

I really loved this episode, but about Karai and Shredder…
I found Shredder’s voice to slightly softer in the beginning of their conversation then the usual tone he has when talking to henchmen, I also found his “I find that hard to believe” to be filled with more faith and reliance, but I changed back to his usual tone after her remark. I might just be bad at judging voice acting though, but I have hope that we might see a bit of a better part of Shredder still, even to just make him a more rounded character.
He might just fear that Karai(Miwa?) will grow too close her “brothers” as well.

Well about that movie.. nothing seems for certain right now you know, it did look like it was going to happen for a while. But the initial script got canned and thus far every-body has left the project.
Which lets face it.. right now is a good thing, it's not exactly the top of the crop in movie makers they got to direct this film.
Michael Bay as producer, and his un-tested production team of unknown directors that has so far just done the nightmare on elmstreet re-make and some other remakes no one liked.. we can do better with the turtles guys, we can do better.
But is ironic since this show happened originally to promote the movie, except the movie got canned first after the show had started production, they had started animating the show at the the point when the movie the show was supposed to promote got canned.
But still.. 60 million dollars, and thus far all we have is a show and a new toy-line. That's a lot of money.
So does this mean loads of tie-ins? such as video games, board games ext?
And I hope they wont just hand the turtles over to other production companies for other tely shows any time soon, this is a good show, it should have its time in the lime-light before we move on.

Nick paid $60 million for the franchise alone, but then factor in another $10-20 million for the production of the actual episodes, all the licensing and merchandizing and the salaries for the staff...etc....we're looking at an $80 million investment.
This is why they're trying to make money off the series on itunes and other digitial places so quickly, they obviously need to make back the money they lost before they profit.

Caught this sucker a bit late, but yeah, I freaking LOVED it. This episode had a little pinch of everything that I love about this show. We had Splinter being the badass he always is, a new, fun character, a villain to plow through, great humor and dialogues, and outstanding action scenes. And with Karai obviously, comes the Foot and it's always fun to see the mooks get pounded.
I had no qualms about Karai's design so seeing her in action made her look even better to me. What a great incarnation. She's got some sweet moves and I can't wait to see more action out of her. Shame she didn't join in the Snakeweed fight. Oh well. No biggie! Can't wait to see more of her. Them anti-heroes are just too much fun in TMNT. Can't wait to see Nick's take on good ol' Casey Jones now. But still, Karai! I so want a figure of her, right about now. Love all the little things that make her stick out more in your mind (piercings, blonde hair, etc). And Kelly Hu did a fantastic job for the voice IMO.
Raphael's freaking MK like fatality on SW, actually blew my damn mind. That was one of the most kickass things ever in TMNT. Ever! So. Much. Win. This is still a kid's show but Snakeweed not only looks like a plant Tyrant from Resident Evil (dat beating heart. With the spiked oversized arm from Dogpound, I get tons of RE vibes) but he now gets one of the best finishes ever. Not a real plus on him though, but still. Dat BOOYAKASHA!

After watching this, my sister pointed out that Nick is going to bring in Angel just to be a crush for Raph. She was joking, but honestly, I don't even feel it's that far-fetched anymore. I really, really hate that this who stupid high school puppy love crap is being played up as much as it is. People have been shipping April/Don and Karai/Leo long before it was SHOVED in our faces, so obviously there was enough to go off of without screaming it to the world. Now Karai isn't this complex, interesting badass Foot clan member. She's been turned into Leo's girlfriend. I hate it.
I also hate how Leo doesn't seem to give even the slightest damn that she IS the enemy. Seriously, he doesn't even think twice about it. I could see if maybe his affection for her developed over time or he didn't know she was a part of the Foot to begin with and he discovered it after he already crushed on her, that would make a bit more sense. But as of right now it's like he's giving a very blatant **** YOU to not only his brothers, but Splinter especially.
Anyway, I DO like Karai and I feel like this episode touched on a dozen interesting things (Raph/Leo spat, Raph learning his lesson, bringing back Snakeweed), that I sort of wish it had been split into different episodes, but I'm not displeased with it all being mushed into one.

Let's not forget that when he first met Karai, Leo was frustrated and angry as shown by his erratic pacing and bashing of things left and right on the roof top. I think Karai caught him in a vulnerable moment when Leo was so sick and tired of his responsibility as leader and desperate for an escape. His fascination with Karai is some sort of subconcious rebellion in a way and was determined in his mind in a moment of unclarity. I'm sure we'll see him suffering for his decision later on. (he will surely have to answer to Splinter for instance)
Also, it seemed to me that he did have some guilt about liking a girl from the enemy, as he tells April something like "I'm tired of being the responsible one. When can I have some fun?" This reminds me of the excuses I get from my teenage siblings when they do something they know they're not supposed to.

He didn't really give a damn in 4Kids either at first. He thought he saw good in her and wanted her to go down the right path. It was only after she stabbed him with his own katana that he realized Karai couldn't be trusted at all. I think something similar is going to happen in this show as well and that Leo's going to pay for what he thinks about her. I think she's going to betray him and he's going to get hurt either physically or mentally due to it. Then again, the show could surprise us, but we all know good things can't last. Sooner or later, either Splinter or Shredder are going to get wind of this, and it won't look good for Leo at all.

For me this is probably my fourth favorite episode so far. I liked the reappearance of Snakeweed. At first I thought Raphael did kill him and I was feeling like the character was wasted. But then we see Snakweed's heart still beating so I was happy about that.
I liked the "Raph as leader" theme and I do agree with it for his first real mission as leader. It reminded me of how Raph acts in the first movie and TMNT where he tries to save everyone, and that it seems to be his main goal in doing what he does. He even wants to save people from harm before bashing in heads usually. He's a tough guy but he does care. We saw that with his reaction to Mikey getting hurt. I always liked how Raph liked Mikey the best out of his brothers because Mikey is my favorite turtle behind Raph too, of course.
Karai was pretty interesting I thought. I liked her more than I thought I would. The design didn't lessen her importance to the story like I thought it might when I saw her design for the first time. She'll be an interesting reoccurring character. As she is rebelling against her training and duties she should be an interesting ally in certain situations. I also like how it appears that she actually is Shredder's daughter in this series. Her mother may be of interest to Splinter huh?

The first time I saw Karai's design I was very disappointed, and I was one of the very first people on this form to jump in and see what everybody else was saying about her. Then put my 2¢ in. then after seeing the episode I love this episode! Really her weird "look" makes sense because of the way she's been raised. She's not going to look like an angel sitting on the church pew, she was raised by all Shreadder! Maybe as her character develops she will "change her look". Then again, since this is CGI that may cost to much money.
Also her voice actor nailed the character and really made the story enjoyable. I can't wait to see more episodes with Karai in them. She could easily become one of my favorite characters!
I also think the Batman/Catwoman dynamic is awesome!
-I loved it that raphael was shouting booyakashaa as he was splintering up the frozen snakeweed...that showed were his thoughts were still....
I never thought about it that way while I was watching the episode, but you bring up a good point. Maybe Raph shouting "booyakashaa" is showing that he is still thinking about Mikey! That is a sweet thought, I like it!
All in all, the episode was definitely worth the $3.00 I had to pay itunes to watch it!

Love Karai cause she's a strong female character but I was hoping she wouldn't be paired with Leo.:tgrumble:
It's funny that in the Tales of Ninja turtles where Leo lost his sight, the dream he had while under the influence of the tea Splinter gave him, he was married to a beautiful japanese lady who was gentle, kind and soft spoken; very opposite from Karai. Then it turns out his soulmate is Radical, a native american superhero who is very spiritual and compassionate; also opposite from karai. :trolleye:
Beside, don't think Leo is karai's type.
In mirages last issue, she appeared to have slept with Casey Jones!!!
Oh well, come what may.:tcool:

I've searched the thread but didn't find anything about this.
When I rewatched the episode again, I heard Karai was saying that the sword that she planned to steal with Leo is owned by Miyamoto Musashi. It passed on unnoticed by me, I thought it must be some made up swordsman Nick came up with.
But then I realized and it finally clicked. Miyamoto Musashi is the famous swordsman, the inspiration behind the creation of Usagi Yojimbo! http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usagi_Yojimbo
Ugh, I'm kicking myself for not realizing this earlier. What a great find.
Now it doesn't necessarily mean that Miyamoto Usagi will make an appearance in future episode, but it's a nice Easter egg/teaser by Nick nevertheless. It's their mischievious way of teasing us about Usagi. Very smart, hiding it that you can easily miss unnoticed. Damn I love this show!

First, Mousers, than Leatherhead, than Rat King and now Karai? Nice.
I am not entirely on board with reimagining Karai as just Shredder's henchwoman / step-daughter.
Still this version of her is nice. Reminds me a bit about Juri Han (Street Fighter 4). Her banter with Leonardo was nice and overall I liked her personality. Fighting scenes between them were just...awesome. Some of the best I've seen in series. This is where 3D outshines 2D animation.
Definitely one of the best episodes, but I hope Karai won't end up as half-ally half-enemy as in 2k3 series. It was somewhat annoying.
