Mondo Gecko was a skateboarding lizard mutant who was "bro's" with Mike in the toon and had similar interests and personality.
Was Mondo Gecko created to be Mikey's mutant lizard skateboarding friend?

I just think that character archetype was really popular at the time.

Considering the first episode in which they meet is titled "Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko", I would think it was the intention of Mike having another ally. Michelangelo does like reptilian friends, whether it be Leatherhead in Mirage/4kids/Nick, Spike, or Mondo Gecko. But it was especially much more of a parallel in Archie than in the OT, since Michelangelo just wanted to be a good crime fighter like his brothers, and he doesn't skate as much as he does in Archie.

I thought it was kind of cool for Mike to have a fellow 'dude' to hang with. He has serious and boring Leo, bothersome Raph and techhead Don. He needed someone like him to hang with. I liked how the playmates package even says 'his brain is jammed to Michealangelo's frequency'.

You know the funny thing is in the Archie comics Mondo Gecko spent most of his time with the Mutanimals, so he didn't really get to hang out with Mikey all that much anyway.

Mondo Gecko might have been intended to be Michelangelos parallel, however, he appeared to little in the FW series to be considered so. How many episodes was recurring mondo gecko, two?

Nope, just one recurring role. Heck, he didn't even get to chat with Mikey in that episode.

yeah, the only thing he said in that episode was that he would help out if Mikey needed help, but yeah, they never got to hang. I also didn't like his voice much. I always thought he needed to sound more surfer.

I would like to see him in at least some more episodes. Could have been solo-adventures with Michelangelo.

Mondo Gecko is one of the few good guy mutants I'd like to see Nick revive.

An updated version of Mondo Gecko would be pretty interesting. Makes me wonder how they would tweak his look and characteristics to make him seem a bit more relevant.

I should start taking bets that Mondo won't show up in the Nick show or IDW book. Just can't see it.

He's a reptile mutant. For some reason being a reptile makes me think he has better chances than any other type of animal mutant.

I could see him showing up.. I also see no reason why he couldnt still be a skater dude.

Mondo Gecko reminds me of those teen skaters who would smoke pot and listen to heavy metal like his Archie incarnation.

It IS interesting that he is more Raph's friend in Archie, and that he's more of a hothead. I always thought in the Fred Wolf cartoon that he was basically Michaelangelo, just like Raph and Casey are basically the same in Mirage.

heh, i figured. but man...even throwing that out there has germinated the seed in some deviantartist's brain and we're gonna have to deal with that possibly becoming a "thing".

I liked Candy Fine, I'm guessing after Mondo died they just phased her out.
I thought Mondo was an OK sidekick character for the guys. I mean, yeah, he was blatantly focus-grouped into existence based on what was "cool" into 1989, but that leaves him and a few dozen other popular cartoon characters from the 80s. Yeah, that did make him a bit similar to Mikey, but that wasn't a huge deal to me.
He wasn't a guy I'd want to see all the time, but I wouldn't have minded seeing him a bit more often, either. I felt he was someone the guys could relate to. I know some purists argue that defeats what they see as the point of TMNT in general, but I'unno. I could at least "buy" him a bit more easily as part of their world than someone like Jagwar or Dreadmon, I guess.
