View Full Version : Why is this show so despised?

So, we're all TMNT fans in here. Obviously since this is a huge hub of fans and collectors alike. We are in this for our love of turtles and so, having followed the new Nick toon from it's inception all the way to the lastest episode, safe to say, I am a fan. A huge fan. And reading this board, I am far from alone. I've actually never seen a TMNT incarnation gather this much love right off the bat. It's darned awesome.
But...what about outside of the fandom. I decided to go around and scour the web in search of posts about the new Nick series to see what was up as far as opinion go. And I have found my answer. Now before I tell you about my findings, consider this: I was a huge fan of the turtles from way back when. I am a grown man nearing my thirties and turtles have been with me for years. And I LOVE this show. I am not kidding, this is actually the best damn Turtles related show I have ever watched. Everything from the voices, to the direction is pitch perfect and I love it to bits.
So here it is folks: This show is hated. Not disliked. Hated. To pieces. From comments on TV blogs, all the way to comments on gaming websites like IGN to Gamespot, this show is literally reviled. People are calling it, the single worst thing to happen to TMNT and an insult to the brand. The CG is criticized and the show is considered "childish". Keep it mind, these are not my words and I am outraged at this imbecility but it is what it is. Some TV shows simply can't gather love and trust me, Nick's TMNT is one of them shows. I have barely seen anything positive. It's all hatred and pure dislike.
And I have to wonder. Why? For this old fan, this is as good as Turtles can get. Is this just refusal to watch and hasty judgments? I am truly confused here, and I am starting to wonder whether we are alone in our liking of this new series. Actual reviews of the show are glowing, but the comments in the actual reviews tear it to pieces. I am literally saddened. Is this just dumb teens who grew up, on TMNT03, who are now in a rebellious phase where "cartoons' are terrible and idiotic? I am desperate for an answer to this. This show is simply incredible and the dislike is so overwhelming, I feel like slapping some of these morons.
EDIT: So I actually forgot to actually paste some of the postings. Here' an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XK8EOD9buLc, this is the trailer of TMNT2012 as hosted by IGN.com, a big videogame website that doubles as a media hub. The comments are not old and from before airing but actually from a week or so ago.
OMG! My eyes!! The CGI is horrible!! Can't these guys just animate old school again!? Lazy assholes! Not to be mean but this looks really stupid. Nothing beats the 80's version, but at least the 2003 version was worth a look at it.... this just looks.... and sounds.... never mind. Whoever wants to watch this... watch it.
They look blocky, horrible voice acting. Nothing beats the 2003 version.
Oh this.. looks terrible..
garbage animation & character voices vs the original.
This show looks like **** man... Sorry they are really doing it wrong, you'd have to be a ****stick not to see that...
The 90's series just got raped >.<
This 2012 version sucks.
I have no problem with CGI, it's terrible CGI like this that I have issues with. It's 2012, there's no excuse for this kind of low-quality...
Just Epic... Epic Fail.
It's a joke compare to 1987 & 2003
And I don't want to read too much cause this just bums me the hell out, but it's pages and pages of comments like these. And not just contained to Youtube. I was looking up reviews of the Lego sets, because I was thinking about getting them, and I just saw pages of comments about how the new sets sucked because they were based off the new "garbage" and not "real" TMNT. And it just goes on. What the hell is going on. How can a series this amazing be this hated?
I don't care what people think.. I love this show. :tthumbsu:

I think part of the reason so many people hate the Nick show is they want the original cartoon that they grew up with, not a completely new incarnation that only pays homage to it.

If it was that disliked it wouldn't have been granted a second season.
I'm a bit surprised you say IGN hates it... I've read the reviews there and its actually favorable with it.
It also has a healthy tumblr fandom too.
I get the Nick Turtles won't be loved by loyal fans of Mirage/FW/4Kids/Kitchen sink, so it's their loss IMHO. I'm just happy the fans are making the show and the Turtles are being introduced to the younger generation.

It doesn't matter what nostalgia obsessed fan boys think about it. As long as the kids like it, the show will get good ratings and be successful.

Which is why I'm calling this guy out. IGN has reviewed every episode of the show so far and its gotten great reviews.
You look at the comment section on IGN and all the readers love the show.
Here's the review of the latest episode, it got an 8.8, and look at the reader comments...they all love the show:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/02/09/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-the-alien-agenda-review
IGN has had NOTHING but praise for this show.
Wow, the voice acting is so not horrible.
It's a shame it's not given a respectable chance by some people. Even if it's not your cup of tea, you'd be kidding yourself to think it wasn't a well made series.
Anyway, I had gotten the sense it was a pretty popular and well liked show.

871 thumbs up vs 2790 thumbs down. Again I am not saying that I hate the show. I love it to bits. It's actually my favorite incarnation of TMNT ever and I cannot wait for Season 2 and I am comtemplating getting every single figure/vehicle released in the new lines. Huge fanboy here. But the show is hated, that much is for certain. Man I got my account here because of this new show. I love it that much, trust me, I wish this was loved as much as it deserves!
This is ugly.....Very ugly. After watching the first episode I hung my head in disbelief. The show is PAINFUL to look at. I'll just pretend this doesn't exist. Yeah...I'll...keep...telling..*.GODDAMIT IT DOES EXIST AND I CAN"T BARE TO LOOK AT IT! *Rage Quit*

That's the internet.
You could be giving people free money no strings attached and someone would still be online trolling or complaining about it.
It's the sad world we live in now-a-days.
The simple fact is the show gets good ratings and the merchandise is selling well, so the opinions of these hateful people in the end amount to nothing. :tcool:

You do realize this same thing happened when the 4kids cartoon started in 2003? People who never watched a single episode of it hated it because there was no Krang, Bebop, Rocksteady or Technodrome.
Most who watched it enjoyed it, and the series now has a legacy of being one of the best incarnations of TMNT.

If you legitimately enjoy the series then why do other's opinions of its quality bother you? It exists regardless and the internet is pretty much the worst place on the planet to find complex opinions anyways. Most are horribly formed, involve several insults, and contain grade school level spelling and grammar at best.
I myself could write a long, complex, and drawn out explanation of why I find the series to not be "my cup of tea" but it would be a waste of time. Those who chose not to ignore it will just attempt to argue with me about how they know what I like better then me. Some will even tell me how I can't possible be correct because as some forget people that really like something are just as irrational and nonsensical in defending it sometimes as those who dislike it.

Personally, I consider myself a moderate fan (watched the episodes and played video games in TMNT franchise) but interested in it enough to not be comfortably passive without it.
I'm a big OT fan and for me the 2K3 and 2012 CGI series are okay, the latter two are not my most favorite depictions of the Turtles. The story/plots are really good, but the overall tone for 2K3 and CGI are just not for me. I don't know if its the color schemes of the cartoon or rougher dialogue, but both shows don't have that warm, welcoming tone that the OT had. In addition, it just seems that CGI animation has a colder, stoic effect that hand-drawn animation...at least to me. (Now I'm not saying I won't watch the CGI and not interested, but I'm not going to go out of way constantly to see every single episode.)
As for the "childish" comments, I can see that and always felt that the CGI Turtles were more like "Tweenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" because they have those over the top "fanboy" moments and anime facial expressions. Unlike the OT and 2K3 (MUCH more so with 2K3) that more reflected teenage emotions, because they had more personal angst and heavier self-doubting issues.
But most of those over-the-top comments of the show being SO horrible are ridiculous though. I think those opinions are just highly exaggerated just so they can get attention in the vast expansive internet, especially on YouTube. (Just look at Nostalgia Critic and Angry Video Game Nerd at how having extreme exaggerated emotions online have given them profitable outcomes...) Furthermore, it's a bit unfair to the 2012 series because it is being compared to other preceding TMNT series in which the OT didn't (but it had a lot more to prove being the first series) and 2K3 hadn't either (they provided a much darker version, and yes it was compared to the OT, but they were vastly different in tone/ambiance.)
In the end, us "grown" TMNT fans (teenagers and older) can bicker and complain or compliment and gush over this new CGI series all we want, but in the end Nickelodeon and its merchandising cares about only one demographic that will ultimately decide its future...
...how the kids like it...

I keep reminding them that the old show has NOT aged well and for being action heroes, the Turtles go through entire episodes just throwing pizzas and pulling rugs out from under the bad guys. The new show is the one with all the sweet ninja action the Turtles are supposed to have.

Most of these were OT fans who were teens when the 4kids show were airing. Those same people should be in their mid/late 20's now. I'm sure not that many near-30 years old are that stupid to cry about their childhood when Batman and Spiderman are rebooted constantly.

Every single time I read a thread asking people to state widely hated media that they love, I find countless posts naming things that aren't really widely hated at all. I guess it only figures that such misconceptions might spawn a whole thread.
If you're going by the comments on a trailer, though, then I sort of get the negativity, and not just because YouTube is filled with nostalgic hipster idiots, but also because, in my opinion, this show's trailers don't do a great job of putting its best foot forward. Generally, they tend to not only focus on the humor, but also focus on the loud, juvenile, in-your-face humor of Michelangelo. That's all actually in the show, of course, but it's not all or the best this show has to offer, and I think it's the sort of thing a lot of people were dreading when Nickelodeon acquired the license. It's very childish, and when it's the only part of the show you see and you see it out of context, it's harder to get that Mikey is supposed to be childish, and he's reviled for it in-universe.

First of all, this is the enternet.
When some-thing new is being made, especially some-thing which is a new interpretation of some-thing old and beloved.
Some-one out there will shout out about how much they hate it.
And some-one will shout out about how much they love it.
The haters will be the loudest and they will always exist no matter what we are talking about.
I myself was hesitant by the CGI at first, as I have never ever in my life, seen a CGI animated tely show where I actually enjoy the CGi... before now. This is absolutely a first where I found myself growing fond of the CGI, and it surprised me greately.
Just... I like the CGI???? wtf, woah. Good job show.
I even admit that, erh.. hehehe.. Back in May I was at London Exspo con, I was at a panel with the creators where there was a five second exclusive footage of the show. (The little clip with Mikey jumping away from some misils from the metalhead episode.) and a little art work.
Based on only that, I made a small review for the web-site I am working for, and my review based only on that, was very hesitant, bothering to negative, where my main complaint keep on being the CGI, which I kept on bringing up. But then I also said. "There's enough interesting ideas among these creators, that I am going to give this a shot."
And I did.. and.. after having seen seven episodes I made a new video saying. "I was wrong, this show is amazing, check it out."
So yeah, guilty! I was as hesitant as every-body else, especially in regard to the CGI.
And well, we need to look at the percent picture here.
Viewers ratings, genneral review ratings from people whom has actually seen the show, and those are mostly positive.
And again, you need to take out a slice of ten reviews at a time, to gain any picture of a percentage. Don't ever google stuff! only the negative will come out first, search out some more legitimate review web-sites.
I have thus far introduced three different friends to this show, and they all love it.
There's some whom hates it, cause they are so protective of their old show, not deeming any-thing good enough. not realising the fact that their show is a thing of the eighties, it's gone, it's a product of its time and wont come back.
And the way to keep the franchise alive and share with a new genneration is through a new show.
Also.. some people forget, this is mainly a kids show! the prime objective of this show is to have small kids in the age 6-14 sit in awe in front of the screen, yelling "BOYAKASHA!" so much that it will drive their moms insane.
And if this show is so good, that those small kids can look back at it when they have become adults saying. "Wow.. that was a really really good show." all the more power to the show!
That it manages to bring in an adult audience, also only more power to the show.
So well, ask the kids it's meant for, the kids in the age 6-14, I am pretty sure they all love the hell out of this show.
Ask the adults, the ones whom shouts the loudest, yeah I guess the recieve is pretty mixed. But it's also over on the positive side in genneral, and there's more people like me expressing genuine surprise in how much they ended up liking the show.

It's youtube... people are rude, rude, rude. I suspect most comments are from immature kids or teenagers, but I'm sure there are tons of adults speaking the same garbage. Another thing is people are spoiled rotten by Pixar and other high-end CGI and think everything should look that polished. And I gotta give it to the people behind the how to train your dragon TV show as well as Clone Wars, the animation looks very close to feature film quality.
I'm not going to deny that some CGI shows have plenty of advantages over TMNT, but I love the TMNT characters and lore and I'm perfectly happy with the look and feel of the show. The animation is pretty smooth and natural looking to me. Any comparisons to Reboot or whatever are totally exaggerated.
Now, would I like to see the 2012 show improve over time? Yes, there are things they can improve and I hope they do. But none of the shortcomings are gamebreakers for me in any way.

I can't speak for everyone but my issues with CG animation have nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fact that it's constantly being forced on us and no one asked for it. The only reason they do it is because it's cheaper and in my opinion it's completely lifeless. I don't know anyone who flat out prefers CG to traditional animation and it's very tough to argue that CG animation looks better then 2D when it ages poorly in comparison. Even John Lasseter has publicly apologized for making CG the standard.

That's just it. The team on TMNT seems to be trying to integrate a 2D (or rather hand drawn) sensibility to the series. Some of the styles they use try their best to incorporate 2D animation techniques in CG animation.
I myself could write a long, complex, and drawn out explanation of why I find the series to not be "my cup of tea" but it would be a waste of time.
Not sure if this was in reference to my original comment? I meant that it is a well made show, regardless of whether or not it is liked. But I guess even that point is up for contention?

I also like the mixing of animation styles- sometimes it works better than others eg. I love that in an 3d animated world their cartoons are in 2d. In regards to the 3d, as with most animation of this style, certain movements will sometimes look unnaturally quick/weightless. Thankfully, most of the animation attention seems to be given to the turtles themselves so it's usually the extraneous characters that will suffer this affliction.

I think part of the reason so many people hate the Nick show is they want the original cartoon that they grew up with, not a completely new incarnation that only pays homage to it.
This is as close we can come today. For many years, TMNT could be said to be split up into two major franchises.
"Dark versions" (Mirage-style)
*"Mirage/Image Comics
"*Movies
*"2003 cartoon
Light-heartred comedy, children and family-friendly:
*"1987 cartoon
*"Archie Comics (a little mit more violent than the 1987 show, but not to be count as Mirage-style)
*"UK Hero Turtles Comics
*"Next Mutation
Whenever some concept from a series they weren't fans of themselves, some people would bash it just because it was from that universe.
When Nickelodeon bought property in 2009, the idea of mixing the best from various TMNT universes to create a new one went stronger. Also, animators of today's shows grew up as TMNT fans themselves. I think TMNT can only get better.

I think we can all agree the true strenght of this show, is actually the writing.
And well, problem here is, you have to sit down and actually watch an entire episode to get that the writing is that good.
A lot of people will just look at some few clips out of context and base their feelings on that. And you have no idea how good the writing possible is, or how good the character interactions are or any-thing, based only on that. So erhm, yeah :/
The CGI honestly was also some-thing that had to grow unto me, I didn't fancy it that much at first in spite of the writing, I actually out-right said. "I can try and over-look it, it's worth it for the writing."
Thankfully now after some time, and after witnessing what awesome fight-scenes you can make with it, I have grown far more fond of it, and I am now accepting it for being this shows unique art style. But it also took some time for me.

Frankly, I don't care what other people say about the show. They can hate on it all they want. I love it and will continue to watch it. My mom even likes it, and she barely watches the show with me because she's always watching something else instead. She saw the Shredder fight with me and was blown away.
So, let the haters hate and rise above it. Watch the show and continue to support it. That's all you can do.
I don't know anyone who flat out prefers CG to traditional animation
I know I do.
and it's very tough to argue that CG animation looks better then 2D when it ages poorly in comparison.

The great thing is the CG animation will probably improve with each passing season. It looks pretty good now, by Seasons 2 and 3 it'll probably look amazing.
And the complaints about the lack of pedestrians will probably be fixed too.

I know I do.
I'm not at all surprised.
Yeah, like all those cartoons from the 80's don't look like sh*t now, right?
So you can name one era where TV animation was bad. One that Hannah and Barbara apologized for lowering the standard. Looney Toons, Tom and Jerry, those early Disney shows, and even stuff as recent as many of the comic book animated series all hold up quite well. I was more talking film then anything but it applies to TV as well.
I don't think I've encountered anyone personally that disliked the show, really to an extreme.
I mean, yes, I have a guy friend that doesn't like the CG of the show because of it not being up to par with some other CG series (...I'd get a little annoyed when we would have small spats about TMNT 2k12 CG vs Star Wars Clone Wars CG at times), but I just shrug at that.
Heck, my best friend of 12 years, she liked TMNT basing on the 80s toon and I showed her some of the 2012 series and she seems to like it quite a bit. And believe me - I tried showing her the 2003 series and was shocked she didn't seem to like that when I thought she would have been all over that. Then again... she's not a huge fan of TMNT like myself. ^^;
But overall, the only complaints I've seen/heard were about the CG mostly on how it's not up to par with other CG series. Again, I just shrug at that. We all have our preferences. I personally love it.

I love it when cartoons are criticized for being "childish"
pannoni1
02-11-2013, 12:32 PM
There were people back when the OT aired who complained about the same thing- being childish compared to the cartoons ('60s era) they grew up with and that other shows of the era such as The Simpsons, Captain Planet, and later B:TAS had much more creativity and entertainment, yet it was still a ratings juggernaut. Most kids aren't willing to watch such reviews, and not all of the press is bad (4 out of 5 stars from that DVD review is a good showing). After all, it is us fans that destroy the franchise, not the non-fans who just like to bash anything they've never liked. Sure, the animation quality by today's standards is similar to that of a Filmation cartoon in the '70s/'80s, but this show has a good balance between being goofy and serious along with having some continuity. Its mostly the CGI haters who miss 2D animation and the Lairdian types who prefer a compelling story, but those are not a huge portion of the fanbase, and reception continues to be good.

I sort of understand the "childish" thing on the grounds that everyone is younger, but to its credit the show is at least capitalizing on that to make the characters relatable. I like that for once, Leonardo and Splinter are something other than all-knowing leaders, Karai is less obnoxious than her 2003 version, and though Michelangelo is just as dumb as his 2003 version, his youth makes that a bit more forgivable.

The reason why people like the show is because it ISN'T dumbed down for kids.
The humor in the series is very similar to the type of humor you see in Disney/Pixar films. Jokes that are funny for kids and adults alike.
You guys should be glad that they found the perfect balance between action and comedy with this series.

Y'all gotta remember that there is an entire internet beyond this forum and other TMNT forums. Of course in a place like this, it's the best show ever. But you have to open your mind that *GASP* there are people out there that don't like the show that you do.
I of course, love the show and think it's the most awesome TMNT show ever, leaving the OT as my second fave, though that is mostly due to nostalgia reasons. But yeah, anytime Nick posts some new info or new pic about an upcoming new episode or character of the new show, it's instantly bombarded by people saying 'it ruined my childhood'. 'it sucks' 'what happened to MY turtles' 'it's Cowabunga, not Booyakasha you idiots' and other such things. Yeah, I do assume these are the same people that buy a TMNT shirt at Hot Topic because it's cool and not because they are actual fans... but the fact remains that yes, there ARE people out there that don't like the same show you do.

The Internet is often viewed as the exclusive realm of dissent, especially when that dissent is negative. When profit is involved, then praising media or at least, not criticizing it, is generally more profitable. Look at Twilight; sure about as many people hate it as love it, but no movie theatre, store, billboard owner, or similar business that sells it would stand to gain money by saying it sucks. Similarly, nobody who hates Twilight is going to make a "Twilight sucks" ad and pay for people to run it; one because it's illegal, and two because the haters can't make any money off it.
Thus, when you give people (including those who don't run businesses) a venue to put their views out with no cost, they will do it. I have done it; sometimes at a cost to my reputation, but not at any financial cost. I haven't badmouthed this show (much), but I have certainly criticized other popular cartoons. A difference between me and many amateur Internet critics is I don't put the past on any sort of pedestal, but the principle is the same.

This whole argument about negative vs positive comments is funny to me that it actually bugs some fans. From the comments in this thread, everyone wants to defend the show and say the OP is wrong, but as some have pointed out already whenever something is different from what they are used to, people's usual initial reaction is negative.
With that being said, this cartoon is a kids cartoon, is it not? If a few negative comments from fans of the comics, 87 or 2k3 series represents the masses then the show would have been cancelled before it was even first aired. It is a kids show that from my own experience kids do enjoy. Just going down the toy aisle and you will see that it must be popular as the TMNT pegs are usually low or empty in my neck of the woods anyways. All other toy lines seem to be able to stay in stock compared. Based on ratings and toy sales, I wouldn't worry about nah sayers, as whenever something becomes popular, you ALWAYS get groups of haters and trolls trying to burst fans bubbles.
So, you have to chalk it up to the shows popularity, people that can't accept change, and negative people just being negative. I would worry if the ratings dropped and the main toy line started stagnating on the shelves. Until then, may this series be long and prosperous!

^ Because the show isn't disliked, even by casual fans. The thread starter based this entire argument off of youtube comments to a trailer from BEFORE the show even aired. Even most of us were skeptical of the new series during those initial trailers.
The show is also a ratings success on Nick so plenty of people are watching.

The show may be intended for kids, but the toys were selling well even before it debuted, not to mention released, at which point those new to the series would have no reason to buy them. (Now, of course, they are selling even faster and have had some price hikes.) This heavily implies to me that whomever the show is intended for, a substantial part of the audience is probably adult.
Of those old-school TMNT fans I've spoken to, most have a more liberal opinion of this show than they did of 2003's. Maybe they've just matured past thinking different necessarily means worse, but also this show isn't trying to ostracize fans of the Fred Wold show the way that one was. At the same time, it has more fidelity to the Mirage series than the Fred Wolf show had, references the movies on occasion, and the ideas original to the show have generally been for the better.
Generally speaking, this is a pragmatic adaptation; trying to incorporate enough stuff from all other incarnations to give everyone something they like. The downside to that is it's pretty busy; with lots of undeveloped lesser villains in a plot where I'd rather see the Turtles fight the Foot or the Kraang, but considering the Fred Wolf show was so episodic, it's hardly fair to diss this show while holding that up as one's double standard.

So I showed my little nephews this show yesterday.
They love the CGI turtles! When Splinter first appeared, they thought he was a big ass wolf. They find it odd how tall he is, and how brown his fur is. Apparently they were basing this from what they last saw in the 2K3 Splinter, who was grey in color and much, much smaller. Ho boy, I came a loong way from OT, and this Splinter is very closely resembling him. Even his fricking robe is in maroon, so much faithfulness! Now I feel old lol.
From time to time, they kept asking each other (and me), "Who's your favorite turtle?", and I naturally answered "Mikey". They each love different turtles, shows how much diversity we have in people.
They love Captain Ryan! That part where he slapped his assistant got us all bawling with laughter. They kept urging me to play episodes after episodes, ha! So much fun.
I hope this series will continue for generations more to come. Love ya TMNT!

With me at least, this show kinda suffers from "TheBatman-itous". I'd imagine most people here are familiar with the Batman cartoons "Batman: The Animated Series" and "The Batman". The Batman began in like 2004, about five years after Batman: The Animated Series ended. And The Batman wasn't a bad cartoon, not by any stretch. But I just didn't have a need for it. Batman: The Animated Series had more than satisfied my need for a Batman cartoon.
Then around 2008 Batman: The Brave & The Bold came around. But that cartoon was so radically different from the previous two Batman cartoons that it didn't matter. I didn't even really look at it as a pure "Batman" cartoon. Nick's TMNT cartoon is still so similar to 4Kids's version (which only ended less than five years earlier), that I just don't feel big need for it. I watch it, but I have a little bit of a tough time growing an attachment to it.

The only thing that's getting old for me is Mikey's naming gag. I liked it for a while but now it's wearing out its welcome. I hope this gag dies off soon enough.
I'm also a bit cautious of the mutant of the week formula. Already "Justin" was clearly created just to give the Turtles another mutant to fight for the end of an episode. Instead of focusing so much on random mutants I'd prefer more development for the main villains or human/alien enemies at some point.

Not liking a show is one thing. Being completely rude about that opinion is another entirely. There's a difference between not liking something and that thing sucking, and some other accusations, like the show being a liberal brainwashing campaign, are even stupider. (Actually, the very notion of a liberal brainwashing campaign existing is stupid.) Plus, just about everyone who disses this show is comparing it to the Fred Wolf toon, which was itself immensely flawed.
However, that really isn't what anyone is complaining about in their posts here. We aren't complaining that some people dislike the show, but that the thread starter heavily misinterpreted data about exactly how many people like and dislike it. Threads debating the show's actual quality are perfectly valid. This thread is just fallacious and doesn't even need to be continued.

I like it. I love seeing new fans coming around. If they like TMNT enough to find this forum, register and post, that alone shows some fan dedication to me and it's great.
It's so cool seeing so many generations of fans here, too. Some grew up with OT, some with 4Kids, and now we even have posters here who've mostly only experienced the new Nick show.
Some posters will contribute more than others, some will cause more problems than others... it's always going to happen though. Gotta roll with it.

If there is one thing I've learned about people on the internet is their are a lot of haters, trolls, rebellious kids, ect who love to be "different " by hating awesome things like Heath Ledgers Joker,Micheal Bay movies and TMNT.Fact is the show is a ratings hit and has gotten great reviews and its toy line is selling great.Don't stress the haters.

I pay no attention to these people, it's obvious people like this show, so their opinions don't matter, a bit.
Opinions always matter.
The Nick show is also painfully mediocre, one-note, and is overrated, especially here. I say that not to be "different" or as a "hater", but as someone who's watched it objectivly for the past few weeks and initially LIKED it. 80s and 2003 were way better for a variety of different reasons, Nick does'nt know what to be.
Kids also love Ultimate Spider-Man and anyone above the age of ten knows that show is s*it, so just because it's succesful with the younger market is NO indication of real quality. Children eat up just about anything. Quality is a bonus in some cases.
Frankly, I don't think anyone really beleives the Nick show is this fantastic bit of work (ESPECIALLY if you compare it to the 2003 show), they just want the franchise to be succesful with Nick and will say just about anything to support the current product so it does'nt go under. Break open the time capsule in twenty years and most will start to admit it was as "immensly flawed" as those few who like to harp on the 80s cartoon

Exactly this! We all seem to keep forgetting that it's a show aimed at TODAY'S kids, not us grown up fans who get into it merely for nostalgia. We're all but fraction of the audience, and sadly we're not the target. We were back in the days of the original cartoon, but not this one.

Honestly, I kinda agree. Now that a number of episodes have aired a lot of the repetition is starting to show, something we didn't notice when only a first few eps aired. Its a very enjoyable show with well characterized characters, but a lot of them follow almost the same type of plot structure.
The plots of Season 1 have been kept simple which is fine for now, but I really hope come Season 2 the show goes beyond, "New mutant is introduced, Turtles fight the Kraang, Mike does something stupid, rinse and repeat."
Even the original toon had so much variety in its plots and the humor was more sophisticated.

Instead of acting like an idiot would you care to provide any examples? The original toon relied on much more sophisticated humor than the Nick cartoon. The snarky drypan humor, Shredder and Krang's banter, the self aware mockery, the references to old 50's sci-fi, and the clever chemistry between the main cast, Channel 6 crew and the villains.
Nick's humor is good, but often times it relies on Mikey doing something dumb or the villains being one note. There episode plots are also decidedly simple, whereas the old toon usually had MUCH more going on in the timeframe of a 22 minute episode. Having watched through the OT recently it's amazing how much they crammed into the show instead of using bloated action scenes.

It's pretty obvious to me there's a faction of TMNT fans who will like anything no matter how horrid it is just because it's TMNT. Then there's the fans who get all excited over anything TMNT and like it for awhile until the blind excitement wears off and they realize what they liked wasn't so awesome after all. Just being amped that something new TMNT is out is enough for some people.
That's not to say that no one genuinely likes the series but I see opinion on it dropping by the end of this first season. In a few years from now I foresee it being remembered less favorably unless whatever comes next is worse. I remember people rabidly defending Back To The Sewer because 2 episodes were decent at best as well as the lame Ninja Tribunal season when it came out. Now most people agree those seasons aren't very good.
If they produced that terrible turtles meeting their baby selves season that would have had the same reaction I'm sure. There's people who activity defend Ultimate Spider-man. I don't care if kids like it you're saying you like it and that's a problem. A full grown adult should not like something clearly made for 4 year olds. That's like me saying Teletubbies is my favorite show and I watch it religiously. You always have those who think it's all great, those who just get too excited, and those who don't put on blinders when they watch things.
As to say when I sit down and watch a show I don't say "Well this was made for 6 year olds so I'm going to pretend all the annoying out of place elements aren't there." I don't have to do that to enjoy DCAU shows or a fair bit of the older Marvel stuff not to mention the previous TMNT series so I don't feel the need to do it with anything else. It either has me in mind or it doesn't. Some stuff skates by with the comic book thing, IE the 90's Marvel stuff, but I need good stories, strong voice acting, and random **** not happening for no reason just because the writer needs to appeal to hyper kids.
I don't demand they make things for me but I also don't have to like everything they make. I'm not going to jerk something off just because they put the TMNT brand on it.

kids are the target audience for this show, and I know they love it.
what we think is inadequate to them is amazing.
this TMNT2012 show is pretty cool to also be grabbing the attention of teens and adults (at least a good amount)
so I know this show is doing well, because by the end of the day we all have to understand it is still a kids show.

I recently went through that while watching Darkwing Duck. Halfway through the first DVD boxset I could hardly stomach all the corny jokes and overblown sightgags.
Konchadunga
02-16-2013, 02:18 PM
Quite the contrary, Darkwing Duck has aged better than most comedy shows from the 1990s, in my opinion.
This show's formulaic nature grates on me, and the pacing is not very good. The Turtles say they won't rest until they get Kirby back, and then that plot thread is abandoned for several episodes. Splinter says the Turtles are at war, Shredder implies he agrees, and then the same thing happens. Villain-of-the-week filler episodes aren't really painful to watch, but when most of the show is that, there isn't much anticipation.
The good news is that is changing as of late. Fishface was a surprisingly tough fighter, the Shellraiser is really cool, and robotic Foot soldiers are probably on the horizon. With both sides getting more and more firepower, the stage is set for things to heat up, and I'm reasonably sure they will. I just resent that it took almost a whole season to get the real action started.

i kind of feel its way to early to really judge Nick TMNT. the first season isn't even over yet and its being compared to shows that ran for 8yrs +.
Jester
02-16-2013, 04:17 PM
I've noticed people mentioning "filler" but even this series filler seems to have more ties to back to the on-going story. Even with the ridiculousness of the Pulverizer, we also saw Fishface's reemergence, and the Kraang retrieving their lost power cell. Compared to 4Kids filler, which used throwaway lines to tie it back into the on-going continuity and so far Nick's storytelling isn't as bad as some claim. Remember this is only the first season....and only 16 episodes.
Looking back at the 4Kids series we had such classic episodes as Garbageman, The Unconvincing Turtle Titan, and the great though mostly (actually completely as it's never really mentioned again aside from models used in the Battle Nexus) filler episode The King. Sure we may know now that Turtle Titan and Garbageman were touched on in later seasons, but looked at as just the 1st season and it alone, they'd be seen as more unnecessary than anything the new show has done....maybe outside Turtle Temper.

Some fans get very uppity with their opinion and disregard anyone that things otherwise... telling people who disagree to shut up just kills the discussions. This place would be Very boring without variety.
In terms of the show being despised, I think it's a fairly small percentage. You'll always have types that are diehard fans of certain eras or universes for the turtles, and will just hate on everything else, or they don't want ANY kind of changes to separate the franchise from their childhood memories.

The funny thing about that is that the worst thing about Pokemon, in my opinion, is it doesn't change enough. The games are the same old scenario over and over with too little development, the anime is just repetitive and refuses to end or let Ash Ketchum age, and the spinoff games are way too shallow. I do prefer Misty to May and Dawn just because she's a gym leader and as such, a tough battler, whereas May and Dawn are just contest types which seems sexist and dull, but Misty leaving didn't make me stop watching the anime regularly, because boredom did that far earlier.

You didn't just say that you like the Turtles. You disparaged those who "s***ed" on it by saying they lived in their mother's basements. I may not agree with some member's assessment of the Nick series, but they by no means have been saying anything that isn't a valid gripe and is not disparaging it for the sake of doing so.
I'm glad that you also like the series, but by calling for civility when people are just offering valid arguments and then making them seem like the stereotypical basement dwelling internet troll for not agreeing you is incredibly hypocritical and almost more disruptive than the debate on the merits (or lack there of) of the Nick series.

Well the Pokemon anime is known for being very repetitive anyway, each saga is supposed to be targeted at a new generation of kids anyway. Nobody ever thought the show was going to have a good storyline or good development.
In a way Pokemon is a lot like the original TMNT cartoon. It follows repetitive formula over and over again, with Shredder/Bebop/Rocksteady essentially being Team Rocket and the Turtles being the heroes stopping them in every episode. But it doesn't matter because people find it fun. As for Misty, she got boring in Johto along with most of the show at the time, so I didn't care they got rid of her. Looking at Brock who stayed all those extra seasons and he turned awful should show why that was a good thing.

I agree with you to a point. The Team Rocket Trio really was a lot like the comedic villains in the Fred Wolf show, and just like them, they were a blast (no pun intended) to watch because of it and stole the show often.
However, the Fred Wolf show did, in fact, retool itself and then later, end as tastes changed, allowing newer TMNT shows to be made for newer generations, and the Pokemon anime has not done that. That each saga is targeting a new generation only furthers my point that the current series centered around Ash Ketchum should just end. The Pokemon Adventures manga follows new heroes almost every saga, though it's still all in the same continuity, and the prior heroes actually age. There's no reason the anime can't be more like that. Kids aren't as stupid as many adults think, and much of their existing stupidity comes from adults not teaching them well because of the same underestimation.

IMO Pokemon should have been more faithful to the games it was based on. Ash (or Red) was only the main character of the first two games. After that, each new game came out with new main characters, and I believe Ash returns as a Pokemon Master in one of the games to battle against. IMO whoever the main characters from the new Pokemon Black and White 2 should be the main characters in the show. Not Ash. Hell, has Hilda even been featured in the cartoon?

They probably only keep Ash around because of Pikachu. Both Misty and Brock were easily dropped as were May, Dawn, etc....so its likely only Pikachu's status as a mascot pokemon that's why they never got rid of him.
Konchadunga
02-16-2013, 10:33 PM
The ironic thing about that is that in a lot of Pokemon games, Pikachu isn't even that easy to obtain. In Pokemon Black I don't think I've even fought one. I could get why Pokemon needed a mascot to compete with other game series on some level, but why have a mascot if his use is sparing at best across most media? Moreover, if every new saga targets a new generation, as Cybercubed suggests, why do they even need a recurring hero (human or Pokemon)?
