View Full Version : What plot for the movie would satisfy TMNT fans? (And my ideas for 'Ninja Turtles')

Okay, I've seen all sorts of gloom and doom about the upcoming turtle movies, anger at the leaked script and the 'aliens' rumor, and disgust at some of the production crew and cast choices. My question, then, is this; what would actually make most turtle fans happy? I read the threads, and see all these dirrent complaints and ideas, and I have to wonder- what kind of plot and story would satisfy the most fans?

Just setting out a brief outline, loosley based on the two most recent incarnations (Nick cartoon and IDW), to see if this would satisfy most fans;

- Channel Six reporter April o' Neal, investigating rumored unethical experiments at TCRI labs (which have supposedly been going on for 15 years), goes undercover as the assistant of scientist Baxter Stockman, head of TCRI.

-April discovers something about the mutagen. Baxter, wanting to silence the reporter, hires the street gang the Purple Dragons to 'eliminate her. But when they attack her in an alley, where she is saved by four green ninja defenders, out for thier first adventure to the surface world. She promptly faints, and is taken back to thier lair.

-At the lair, April meet the Turtles and Splinter, who explains he was a martial arts master named Hamato Yoshi, who had just bought four turtles from a pet store, and a near accedent with an out of control TCRI truck splashed the turtles and Yoshi with a broken canister of ooze. While standing up and trying to crawl out of the muck, Yoshi is bitten by a frightened rat. And over time, Yoshi and his pets start to mutate, and are forced to flee underground. The Turtles mutate into intelligent humanoids, and Yoshi (Now Splinter) raises them as his own sons, and teaches them the art of ninjitsu. April, moved by the story her rescuers tell, promisies to help them find out what's going on at TCRI.

-From the two punks who weren't arrested, Stockman learns of the existance of the Turtles, and 'rewards' the two thugs by adding them to TCRI's many experiments with the mutagen over the years. Stockman contacts his 'benefactor', General Krang, who demands the Turtles be brought in for experimentation purposes. Stockman sendes his expermental landmine clearence robots- dubbed mousers- to capture the turtles, tracking them based on the only loose mutagen bio-signals in the city.

-The mousers attack the lair, and while the turtles and splinter fight Bravely. Splinter eventually falls to the robots, and is dragged away to Stockman's labs. Thier lair destroyed, the Turtles retreat to April's father's old antique store, the 2nd time around.

-With April's help, the Turtles infiltrate TCRI labs to rescue thier sensei, fighting off both mousers, armed guards, and a giant mouser (yikes!). Within the bowels of the labratory, they dicover hundredss of mutated animals- experiments Baxter and his scientest had been working on for general Krang over the past 16 years, trying to use the mutagen to create the Perfect super soldier (here are cameos for muntants from through out the franchise's history- like Leatherhead, Mondo Gecko, Ray Fillet, Mona Lisa, etc.) and they find thier sensei in one of the cages. The turtles free thier sensei and the other mutants, who promtly flee and vanish into the sewers (potential characters to show up again in sequels, and extra characters to sell as action figures for the movie toyline), amomng the escapees are the two purple dragons, who now look very rhino and warthog-like...

-Before they can escape, Baxter moves to confront the turtles for ruining everything. Exposing himself to a vile of the mutagen, Baxter mutates himself into an oversized fly monster, and in the movies climatic battle, fights all for turtles while tearing through the labratory. In the end, the turtles cause the labratory to explode, killing the fly creature, and destroying all the remamining mutagen with him.

-As the turtles escape, General Krang watches from a nearby helicopter, warning the turtles silently that 'this is not over...' (thererby setting up the main villian for a SEQUEL). April gives her report on the news, and thanks the turtles as 'her four friends in green'.

So, what do you guys think? Would this be the kind of Turtles movie that you guys would go see, free of aliens turtles, and even borring little bits form mirage and the OT? Again, I just posted these ideas to see what people think, THIS IS NOT FANFIC OF SOME KIND OF STORY THING, I'm just curious if this outline is the kind of movie turtle fans would go see.

You'll always find those hardcore fans in any fanbase who want a 100% literal adaptation of some version of the story already told. That said, I truly believe that most TMNT fans would be happy with any movie that treated the characters and mythology with respect. Take the new Nick show for example. It's different and doing it's own thing, but it's very respectful to the franchise, and draws a lot of inspiration from the original Mirage comics, the Fred Wolf series, and the first two live-action movies. That's all any of us should really hope for. Something that takes the Turtles does something new and exciting that tips it's hat to the TMNT we all know and love.

Basically, Alien Turtles ain't gonna cut it.:tlol:

I do like your layout. It does exactly what I described. Respects the Turtles and their fans, and does something fresh.

I like it but Baxter should have better defense than just mousers... Perhaps a giant mouser? Otherwise YES

Fans want a gritty, realistic, down to earth movie that's also completely over the top and swarming with magic robots.

From what I can gather reading various websites, I think fans want Venus as the main character focusing on her origin with the other four turtles introduced towards the end of the film, after Venus has defeated Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady and giant-sized Krang, to fulfil the "comedic sidekick" role in the inevitable sequel/s.

And I'm pretty sure that they want Megan Fox to play Venus using green body paint and wearing a plastron bikini. Her primary weapon will of course be a transforming hair dryer that has magical ninja powers!

That doesn't sound like a movie I would be interesting in seeing. Why too much Fred Wolf for my taste.

Anything other than making them aliens and/or making them secondary characters in their own movies.

That sounds really good. Im not sure how Id do it. Never given it much thought as its usually the same story told over and over.

Having said that Id like to see the turtles in their 20s after defeating Shredder and whatnot. I guess "TMNT" already did that and it was kinda left open for a sequel but it wont happen, I know.

Maybe have one of the other major villians become the focus, Krang or Baxter seem the best. Not a goofy accident prone Baxter like in the cartoons. Not Karai though as shes just gonna be a female Shredder.

Has it been confirmed anywhere that the turtles will actually be aliens? I guess you can argue some technicality with the Mutagen being 'alien' sort of making them 'alien', but the turtles actually crash landing from another planet/dimension just wouldn't work. They'd have no reason to care for the wellbeing of a world that's not theirs, nevermind explaining why they're named after renaissance artists and have an outstanding understanding of ninjutsu. I'd honestly be happy so long as they don't pull that...
....
And so long as they give Mikey and Donnie more screen time. They were kind of left out in the '07 movie. Even though I loved the tension between Leo and Raph, I'd like to have seen more from all four of them.

How to make a movie that will satisfy purists and also be a summer blockbuster SFX spectacle:

Step 1: adapt the Fugitoid/Triceraton arc from Mirage vol 1.

I'd kill for a DTV animated version of good ole Mirage 1.1, but for a theatrical, a good blending of ALL of the source material, like the 1st movie would be great.

the mood of the first film is a very nice middle road, or something similar of the IDW comic or Nick show, a well balanced blend of comedy and action.

Nice. I think yhey should bring Irma April's assistent, and let the turtles befriend both of them at the same time.

I think Irma as april's assistant would be a very cool idea, as are a lot of the ideas here. Better than regurgitating Mirage #1 and 'Return to new york' elements yet again. :trolleye:

I've said this before and I'll say it again: No Ninja Turtle movie will ever please everyone because there are different factions of fans who only like certain incarnations.

I like it, except maybe no fainting. The fainting is pretty cliche by now. Maybe she actually talks to them and walks back to the lair with them.

Thanks! I've always been upset that Baxter never got a shot at being a villian in the movies, so this allows for him to be mirage/2k3/IDW Baxter for most of the film, then go OT as a fly monster at the end, turning him into a credible threat for all 4 turtles.

And I just thought it would make more sense to create all the mutants this movie and it's sequels would use at once, then blow the mutagen to kingdom come so it can't be used as a plot device down the road.

And yeah, the faintings been overdone! :tlol:

That sound all right, but this is my idea for a Ninja Turtles movie:

It is the year 2025. China has invaded America. Once great civilizations now stand upon the brink of ruin.

This is the world Leonardo Ninjaroni was raised in. Now working as a smart-mouthed American secret agent in the employ of the Chinese emporer, Hun-Li Chu, Leo has a lot on his plate, with the recent disappearance of the Australian diplomat, Splinter Smith. And when Hun-Li Chu uses him to get the access codes to former UN nukes, it's up to Leonardo, condename: Turtle, to work with his four brothers, Mike, Don, Raphael and Venus, to bring the emporer down before he takes control of the world's water supply, all while trying to win the love of childhood friend April O'Neil. There's just one catch to Operation Technodrome: He's going to have to break into New York prison, to break his brothers out.

Pretty good, huh? What do you think?

Yeah, pretty much anything that treats the characters with respect, takes the subject matter seriously, but not TOO seriously. Have a sense of humor. That's something I don't care for in the Nolan Batman movies: takes themselves way too seriously, and the humor feels entirely forced.

Ninja Turtles are a really goofy concept to non-fans, and it's the humor that really lets non-fans' guards down enough to enjoy the movie. But you can't do what Bay does with the Transformers movies and make it too goofy and childish at times or people won't respect the franchise. I have friends who really like Transformers because of the Autobots characters, but focusing on the human characters and making the Autobots more often than not just explain the exposition and make a few jokes makes it difficult for outsiders like myself to see in Transformers what my friends do.

The first movie really did a great job of feeling dark and gritty, yet breaking the tension with some nice humor (humor that is witty enough for people of most ages to enjoy, not just childish prat falls and 'your mom' jokes).

What I want would most likely appeal to comic fans more then anyone but I'd write it in such a way that general audiences would like it as well. I'm not blind to the fact that an R rated TMNT movie would be a really bad idea but a PG-13 one written with intelligence isn't out of the question. And no I don't want "Nolan" style turtles. That implies I want the film to claim it's realistic even though it couldn't be further from it and the lead actors think shouting constantly and talking like they have a sinus infection constitutes as being intimidating. I also like hearing the dialogue in movies, not the score hogging all the audio, and never stopping the entire movie. People who think you can stamp Nolan's trademark "gritty/realistic" style onto fantasy and sci-fi franchises clearly don't know much about tone or what colors mix well together so to speak.

agree with most of you here, in that I want a movie that respects the intellegence of TMNT fans, the senario I suggested I chose because;

-It is an origin that respects the source material, but not slavishly loyal to it (despite that what some fans are often zealous about)

- uses characters we've never seen before in an adaptation, and finds a way to work many of them in, even just as cameoes.

-it's an origin, while not being a regurgitation of Mirage volume 1 (issue one smooshed together with return to new york) like the first movie was.

-I feel there is nothing wrong with drawing stories and elements from other versions of the turtles besides the Mirage source material. When a legend or syory is retold, it picks up new elements and characters with each retelling. Elements that become a fixed part of future retellings. Myths and legends that cannot change and evolve and adhere to a set original version of a myth like a creed become stagnant. If you have a deep well of mythology that has grown up around your source material, there is nothing wrong with dipping into it for future retellings.

True though I still think there are plenty of Mirage based stuff we haven't seen on screen yet. Stockman and the Mousers, the Rat King, Leatherhead, Utroms, Triceratons, City at War etc.
