View Full Version : Does anyone feel Mikey's goofy attitude is abit....too much?

Don't get me wrong, I still love this Mikey as much as every other incarnation of him. (But the 2k3 version is still my favorite) but this is a point that BlackNerdComedy has recently made in a video of his and I agree with him wholeheartedly. It seems like the writers have made Mikey alittle too dumb in this new series and every other quote that comes out of his mouth is him cracking a joke or responding to someone else in a very stupid way, as if it's the only true way to get a laugh from the audience without having to resort to using the other characters for humor. I know there are times where the turtles have their own way of being funny, what with Donnie and his attempts as wooing in April, Raph's sarcasm, or Leo's really, REALLY bad one liners during battle, but it seems like most of the time Mikey is stealing all the comedic thunder from the other turtles and most of it just gets abit repetitive. I really think that next season or somehow in the new few episodes before this season is over they really tone it down with the Mikey jokes because they've become quite excessive and they're making Mikey look dumber and dumber by each episode. I don't think '87 and 2k3 Mikey were ever this stupid, it really shouldn't be necessary for this Mikey to be really stupid.

I agree that they made him a little "dumber" in the new show, but I really like this version of Mikey and he does make me laugh. I don't have a problem with it, but I think they should let the other characters be more funny for a change.

some episodes have Mikey doing most of the joking around some episodes he does it less :3 it just depends on the writers I guess :3

Personally I like him and his jokes XD

and you probably heard this a million times but he's not "dumb" he just doesn't focus on stuff around him.
he gets easily distracted by stuff and doesn't listen when he should be XD this makes him appear dumb....but when he actually does focus you notice how competent he really is. (more than usually at least)

imagine if he paid attention all the time? he'd probably be one strong ninja!

That's exactly the point I'm trying to make. They shouldn't rely on Mikey's stupidity the whole time to get cheap laughs. They need to let the other turtles, heck, other characters around Mikey have some shot at jokes. Just because Mikey's the funny one doesn't mean he should hog all the funny parts to himself, especially when they get repetitive.

Actually, I feel that Mikey is getting less goofy as the show has progessed thus far, while still showing enough goofiness to show that it is Mikey, and Raph does a good job sometimes to tell him to chill and I enjoy those scenes and he's the Turtle that appeals to the youngest demographic so I can say the 3-8 years enjoy Michelangelo just like I did when the OT aired. Sure he's done the girly scream again like in 4kids, but that's part of being the youngest brother. Now if another Turtle was goofy, well that would bother me since Michelangelo has always been the comic relief of the bunch, even in Mirage.

In the TCRI episode I loved were Leo imitated the Kraang when talking about the human employees being oblivious to them. Even Raph got some quips in as well.

Short answer: yes. But I love Cipes as Mike.

My one "requirement" for Mikey is that he's funny (because I know no one's going to do much more than make him comic relief) and this Mikey makes me laugh pretty regularly.

However, they go way too over the top with him sometimes. Perfect example is New Girl in Town... his "gardening" line was hilarious, then they had to go off and have him ramble about how he put the cherry on dat sundae or some stupid sh*t.

Total facepalm.

Mikey was my favorite back then, and I still love him. There are moments where it does go on too long. Like tothenines said. But the reason I liked him so much and still do is because he's a goofball. And I enjoyed his scenes w/ leatherhead.

I don't even think of this version as dumb.
In fact I think he is smarter than the 2k3 version, whom I thought had moments of being genuinely dumb and completely un-aware in some situations, while new Mikey, even though cracking a lot of jokes, never seem as un-aware of the situation.

He just acts dumb because that's a role that's easy to fall into among his brothers. And he enjoys being a prankster, annoying his brothers on purpose.

When the situation does arrive though, when it's time for him to stand up, he does!

Also I love how it's highlighted that he actually has some very unique qualities to him in this version, things he is better at than his brothers.
He is a peoples person, loving to meet new people and learn to know them, he is incredible sweet and never mean (even when he annoys his brothers on purpose.) he is genuinly curious about the world around him, and clearly wish to explore it. He meets the world with a sort of curious wide-eyed innocence and wanting to figure it all out, while giving every-body a chance to show they are good and be friends, he really wants to learn to know people.
And well, those are very inspiring qualities to me.

And also seems to me that his joke cracking has more to do with him not liking silence, or him trying to break the tension getting to best out of every situation. (why be gloomy when you don't have to be?) more than it comes out of any stupidity persay.

I like him here. At least he's not overly cocky despite being a complete coward like 4kids Mikey.

This Mikey is fun, if a little dumb, but there are often moments where he's the voice of reason, like in this last episode.

And come on, the whole "Next elevator shaft fight..." bit was awesome.

After 2K3 Mikey, I think what they're doing with him in the Nick series is a breath of fresh air. He's funny, albeit ignorant to a lot of stuff, but he's also brave when he has to be and he's endearing. 2K3 Michelangelo was a blithering imbecile and a coward.

I really do like Michelangelo in this show.

My fear is that the show might fall into the habit of trying to use him as "stupid" funny guy. I see hints of these kinds of pitfalls now and then, like when Leo said "We're not in Kansas anymore" during the TCRI raid and Mikey actually seemed genuinely confused as to whether they were in New York or not. Stuff like that makes me trepidatious of the future.

Hopefully, Nick will at least avoid the error of the 4Kids show which made Mikey a borderline narcissist in later seasons to the point where he would emote very little concern for his friends and family when they were in genuine danger (ala Splinter's cyber scramble).

I honestly don't think Mikey is stupid, and though a lot of his jokes kind of play off of the fact that he's a goof ball and supposedly dumb, I think that both his brothers and the audience, are meant to underestimate him.

I think Mikey's main issue is that his priorities are kind of skewed. He's ignorant on a lot of subjects that most would consider common knowledge (like the DNA thing), but this ignorance seems to stem from the fact he doesn't really bother to care much for science and other 'unimportant' things. Where as compare that to how quickly he was able to pick up Bradford's 'Death Dragon", a technique Donnie called 'Complex, yet effective". Mikey probably got to see Bradford preform that move once, maybe twice, and yet he was able to show it off to his brothers. Nick Mikey shows real focus, skill and attention when it comes to what lines up as 'important' in his head; And so far, that seems to be his brothers, martial arts, and pizza.

Case and point, I think Mikey has a brain. He just doesn't always use it ;) Plus the fact that he acts the goof ball is really classic of a younger brother. The youngest sibling usually has to compete with the attention and expertise already established by the older ones: Before Leo was the leader, he was 'The Responsible One'. Raph is 'The Tough One'. Donnie's 'The Smart One'. The youngest kid usually have the room to butt into the areas his bros have already secured as 'their thing". It really doesn't surprise me that Mikey's always making jokes and quips and being loud XD It's just his way of making himself visible.
Anyways, I love Mikey, and I haven't gotten tired of him yet. I actually want to see another episode like the Leatherhead one. It really highlighted another side to Mikey aside from the airheaded goofball, and I want to see his character expand.

I must admit, I am really really wishing deeply for a solo mikey episode, where it's about Mikey being sepperated from his brothers and having to work on his own.

Some-thing tells me, that ones he finds himself in such a situation, his personality would compleately change and he would show ridicoulus amounts of competence.

One line he had that really stuck with me was from Panick in the sewers.

"Guys, I think we might be in over our heads."
"Mikey, you are always in over your head."
"I KNOW! I meant us. And that scares me."

Okay.. what does that tell about Mikey?
First of all, he doesn't view himself as being better than his brothers as in.. at all. In fact he is relying on his brothers to be better than him, and being able to figure out the situations.

That also mean he feels safe relying on his brothers, so he doesn't have to always focus, he doesn't have to always give attention. And perhaps in his mind, even if he did, it wouldn't useful as his brothers out-do him in pretty much every-thing any-way?
so what is there left, but to pick up a good ball persona, at least then he'll have some sort of secured spot among his brothers. Let himself being the one the others can take care off.

So what would happen if he suddenly got sepperated from his brothers, and the situation demanded for Mikey to step up to safe the day?
We would probably see an entirely new side of him. I'm pretty sure that he would be insecure, as he is not used to be the one saving the day, but I am also sure he would step up and do what he knows he needs to do, in spite of his insecurities.
And I am mighty curious about that.

Oh yeah, I am pretty sure this Mikey is rather insecure, just hides it behind his goof-ball attitude.

Yeah, they're overdoing Mikey's childishness... fortunately I can overlook this because he's the baby brother, he has the looks for it too (I find myself wanting to hug him), and his three brothers really did cherish him.

That Leatherhead episode really redeemed his naive persona. And speaking of LH I really enjoyed Mikey was upset the gator disappeared in the last episode. In 2K3 they all acted LH getting buried under the rubble is just another day for them or something.

I don't think Mikey is dumb at all. He just lacks focus at times. I think this Mikey is way better than 4Kids Mikey as 4Kids Mikey became not only a coward but a complete jerk who thought he was better than his brothers. This Mikey doesn't act that way, and while his goofiness can be a bit over the top at times, there are other sides to him that are coming out. One example is how Mikey doesn't think while fighting as seen in "Monkey Brains." Another is his compassion for others as seen in "It Came From the Depths" and "TCRI."

I love this Mikey a lot, and I really don't want him to change.

And the other Turtles have gotten in a few good jokes such as Leo imitating the Kraang and his bad battle lines and Raph telling Donnie to marry the portal and joking about how Bradford would wear the hakama when he took Mikey to prom.

Honestly, I love this Mikey! I agree with a lot of previous posters here. I don't view him as dumb...he just lacks focus.

"You know I have a short att--OOOH GUM!"

case in point. But he's an amazing fighter, and when he DOES focus, he's a force to be reckoned with. He wants to give everyone the benefit of the doubt (Bradford and Leatherhead, for example) and tries to see the good in all people. He's quite simply adorable!! He does play the bit of the baby brother. It's funny, because that is the roll my youngest boy falls into as well. My youngest is a little goofball imp....

still think Mikey is kinda dumb... but most of you are too big a fan of Mikey from past incarnations to wanna admit it and have to come up with a bunch of excuses for it. Some things he does come off as naive and innocent, but things like literally thinking they were in Kansas... that's just being dumb. And believe me, I'm a huge Mikey fan too and would have liked him to be the funny AND competent one.

I also would like to see a solo Mikey ep. OF COURSE he'll somehow get through whatever challenges hit him in such an episode, he is one of the main characters after all and if the episode is about him, of course he will still presevere. However, I doubt he's gonna suddenly become super-competent and be like 'yeah... the dumb thing was an act, time to act serious'.

I still expect a lot of jokes and humor at the expense of him being dense, and I also expect him to do something stupid like... forget the mission and hit a pizza place, or chase the pizza kid that will somehow conveniently lead him to the place he needs to be to discover Shredder/Kraang's plan and/or rescue the others.

I agree he's more childish than dumb, and since almost everyone is younger this time, that makes sense. However, I don't like how he beats certain jokes into the ground for a whole episode. The smoke bomb, water balloon, and Olympics things were just tiresome.

My opinion of comedy is that often quantity is better than quality, and in this case, quantity also means variety. For one thing, how funny any one joke is is subjective, but for another, even if you love a joke, you probably won't love it as much after it's overexposed. That's why good comedy doesn't rely on just one joke.

Come to that, though, I'll at least give this show credit for having other sources and types of humor than just Mikey; the lack of such was part of what made 4Kids Mikey so obnoxious.

03-03-2013, 02:39 PM
Honestly I don't find him any more dumb than previous versions. There are times when he does seem to be lacking in the intelligence department - like the Kansas comment someone mentioned, or how he got confused about why the empty van showed up when it did in Rise of the Turtles ("But we weren't in the van...") - but he's done similar things in previous versions. For example, in The Big Cufflink Caper from the '87 series, there are two such moments:

Don: It's a zamboni machine!
Mikey: No, dude, it's that thing that smooths out the ice!
Don: That IS a zamboni machine!

And later:

Don: (reading a note made from letters cut out of a magazine) 'And bring the bufflinks.'
Mikey: Uh-oh, we don't have any bufflinks!
Don: They must have run out of "c"s; they mean the cufflinks.

Both cases depict Mikey with a fairly low level of intelligence - even if he didn't know the term was "zamboni machine", any normal person would know it's not called "that thing that smooths out the ice", and they'd been talking about cufflinks the entire episode, not to mention they had just gone through a lot of trouble to steal the things.

Anyway, my point is that this isn't really the first version to depict Mikey as being somewhat dumb sometimes. Honestly I love this version of him, and while I do hope they stick more with the goofy, lacking focus Mikey than the less than intelligent Mikey, I find him amusing either way.

And, since you mentioned him in comparison to the others, just thought I'd point out that while Mikey may make me smile, Raph actually gets the most laughs from me in this version, so I don't feel his comedy overshadows the others. He's goofier, but not always funnier (for me, anyway).

i've always loved mikey as one of the turtles but he was never my favorite in any incarnation, until now. i think the writing is clever but what really sells this version of the character is cipe's performance. nick mikey comes off as naive and innocent, which hasn't really been done like this in previous versions. usually its true dumbness, cheesy "funny" one-liners and plain utter obnoxiousness. especially 4kids mikey...geez...

You guys described my feelings perfectly. I'm a fan of Nick Moody's innocent and humor just like I like 2k3 Mikey(although I hated his narcissism and cowardice at times). Sometimes the show goes over the top with the humor but I feel like he needs a episode based on the Mikey microcomic(either the Christmas issue or the recent IDW episode) to help flesh out his character a little more.

GM: Would you like to see the show take Mikey’s personality anywhere or would you like to see him do something that he hasn’t done yet?

GC: Yeah, they are doing that now. They are pushing Mikey’s character further in new places and new directions and it’s a lot of fun. He’s growing up little by little with new experiences and wisdom. So, Mikey in his own way will become wiser. I don’t know if that’s going to mean that people are going to think he’s smarter or not a goof ball, but he is gaining wisdom. Wisdom meaning like he’s going deeper into his own world. He’s always thinking about his brothers. He wants to improve worlds and be rocking with them all the time.

Some-thing else i've noticed a while ago... and wonder if any-one thought of this or how they feel about it..

This new Mikey, definetely have all of the signs of ADHD..

Short attentionspan, easily distracted, dis-organised, often un-aware, can't sit still, feel a constant need to break up any silence, difficulty concentrating.. ADHD

So well.. if that is the case.. if he got ADHD, it doesn't mean he is stupid! it just means that he has trouble concentrating. On training, conversations, situations ext, not because of lowered intelligence, but because of an condition.

And before any-one goes out and shout angry words about him definetely not having ADHD.. I just have to say... I sort of appreciate that he is like that and still competent, since I suffer from ADD myself. (ADHD without the 'H' for 'Hyper.' with means every-thing else except being hyper-active.)

And yeah, I can definetely relate in some ways to this Mikey.

I think maybe the 2k3 Mikey had a little ADD as well, but not this much.. in fact he seemed more lazy than ADD ridden.. yeah I am not the biggest 2K3 Mikey fan.

Fred Wolfs Mikey though, didn't seem to have that problem at all, he was just pretty much chilled all the time.

That thing about abslutely just zoning out when some-one is trying to explain some-thing, and then have to ask about it after-wards when every-body else is all-ready caught up.
Yeah I feel with you Mikey, I do. It's really annoying and you feel stupid :/
... all though Mikey seems more at east with those situations than I do.

He is trying to pay attention! it's just really really hard! I can so relate to that.

I think maybe the 2k3 Mikey had a little ADD as well, but not this much.. in fact he seemed more lazy than ADD ridden.. yeah I am not the biggest 2K3 Mikey fan.

Fred Wolfs Mikey though, didn't seem to have that problem at all, he was just pretty much chilled all the time.

that happens to me all the time. I can literally stare at someone trying to explain something to me and block every word they say.
it's gotten so bad my mom always says "now say what I just said" XD .....of course I can't and she gets mad.....lol I don't pay attention to anything that doesn't interest me....XD...not on purpose....

And hillarity ensues when I try to cover up for the fact that I didn't listen, and then try to act like I totally know what's going on regardless!

Yeah.. happens all the time for me, that's sort of what my condition is about. Short attention span, not for lack of trying mind you.

But don't take it to hard, it also happens to people whom do not have ADD at all, in fact it happens to every-body ones in a while.

Yeah I feel for Mikey. So many things I can relate to all of a sudden. And that Donnie is the one of all people who is paired up with, a person that makes normal people zone out with his endless talk. No.. Mikey doesn't really stand a chance here.

Actually Donnie might be the one in the wrong here, endlessly talking about some sciense in a way so Mikey with a short attentionspan, doesn't have the slightest bit of chance to understand it, then calls Mikey stupid for not knowing what he just said.
I know he never litterately called Mikey stupid, but there's lots of small indictations that that is what he is saying..

I like Donnie to though, he just doesn't realise people don't always understands what he talks about, because it seems so obvious to himself.

I have to admit Mikey does have some funny moments, like when the other Turtles deduce Baxter Stockman is most likely to steal Kraang technology and he deduces it's Donatello.

Let's be honest.every one wanted to say Donnie if wasn't Michelangelo(even the people watching)

But yeah it's the little moments that make me like 2012 Mikey.

On another note: I upgraded to random punk. Horray!!! Soon I'll take over the world. JK. Maybe. I know it's not a big deal but still.

This version of Mikey may be a little dumb (the 'funny one' on many kids' shows tend to be dumb since that's what kids think is funny), but I have never been bothered by him. Mikey on 03 TMNT got a little obnoxious or cringeworthy at times. This Mikey comes off...what's the word? Endearing? Lovable I guess. He's very happy and optimistic without making fun of anyone. This is probably the version of Mikey that's received the most crap from his brothers. Makes me feel for him. Mikey, perhaps aside from Dr. Prankenstein, doesn't tease or insult as much as 03 Mikey did.

Well I like Mikey in "Cockroach Terminator" because they really showed his prankster side a little bit more and I like his and Ralph's scenes as well as Raph and Donny scenes(you know you messed up when Mikey knew you have to turn off the tracking device that can lead you back to the van). I know people weren't big fans of the episode and thought it was a filler but you can't deny it's great character moments and development it had for each character.

Yeah, and the fact that it was Mikey who thought to use bug spray on the roach itself. Not even Donnie thought of that one.

Actually, some storyboards were posted online before the episode even aired, and it was originally Donnie who had the bug spray (it's really long - the part in question is at the bottom): http://chongsuklee.blogspot.com/2013/02/tmnt-storyboards.html I wonder why they changed it to Mikey - maybe they thought it fit his personality better...?

I'm also wondering if the Turtles themselves setting the roach on fire was an issue for some reason as that was also changed, but there seem to be an awful lot of changes direction-wise in this scene.

Back on topic, recently found out my older sis has caught a few episodes, and she's also firmly in the "Michelangelo's too stupid" camp. She says she has a hard time enjoying the show because of it (he's always been her favorite).

Maybe show her some of the posts on this thread and some of GC(I don't know how to say his last name honestly)'s interviews to help explain why Nick Mikey act the way he does.(he got adhd and they're developing his character as the show goes on).

I like Mikey just the way he is. While he may be the wild one of the group, he is also the one that always looks at the bright side of things. Mikey always tries to make the best out of the worst situations, and his calmness under pressure is definately a strong aspect of his character. He also understands people and their problems("Maybe you just think you're a monster because people treat you that way.."). His positivity has, in my opinion, a better effect on the Turtles as a team.

Well, while she did grow up with the OT and movies, she only watches the Nick version because her not quite 2 year old loves it, so I don't think she really cares to put that much thought into it. XD I am however going to visit her over Easter, so maybe while my awesome nephew and I catch the new episode, I'll casually mention it, lol.

First character to make me laugh out loud as well, even it was the opening credits, with the bunny ears, and the eyes rolling to the top of his head.

Actually, Mikey's boundless optimism seems played more often as an example of his stupidity than anything else, like his seeing the positive side of a city mutated by the Kraang. Also, I hate optimism, anyway.

I feel his optimism is one of Mike's common traits and one of the things I really like about Mikey. I feel that just because he's optimistic doesn't make him an idiot in my opinion it just Balances his character out from the others and what makes him great.

Yes sometimes Mikey can be silly and kind of act dumb. But there is a very specific reason why I love him and it can be summed up in one particular scene.

In the episode where they rescue the blind man, he reveals that he knows what they are and rather than be freaked out by them he accepts them for what they are and is grateful to them for saving his life. Mikey just embraces him with a huge smile on his face. He's just overjoyed he's found someone who doesn't think of them as monsters or freaks. Every single time I see that I feel all warm and fuzzy. Mikey may not be the smartest turtle but he's the heart of the team and he wears his emotions on his sleeve. Yes he's goofy and he does stupid things sometimes, but he's just so loveable you want to forgive him for his mistakes and for those few times when he's being annoying.

I think these explain why Mikey acts the way he does:

I bet Splinters strict structured way of life and training is doing Mikey good, that's sort of.. the only way Mikey could ever have learned nin-jutsu that well..

on one early bio it said this Mikey has major ADD XDD
