View Full Version : Kevin Eastman Talks Michael Bay Film

Though Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo have recently gotten a very successful make-over on Nickelodeon, a new big screen, live-action adaptation is also in the works at Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes that will star Megan Fox. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman spoke with CBR about the project, and he seems to have high hopes about the film's possibilities.
"One of the things that's awesome about the relationship I've had with Platinum Dunes and Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman and some of the producers, Scott Mednick and Galen Walker on the series, is that it's probably amusing to a lot of people what the press puts out there and what they say people behind the scenes really want to do with the movie, but [Platinum Dunes'] main goal is actually to make the best possible "Turtles" movie with respect to the fans and the core audience as possible.
"From everything that I've seen in the ["TMNT"] script and the development and everything they've asked my input on specifically, it's gonna be an awesome, familiar, solid "Turtles" movie. It'll have everything that fans are gonna want and then some.
"Much like you look at what they're doing at Nickelodeon with the new animated series, it's all based solidly on the "Turtles" foundation, but they've hit the reset button. They've taken it back to the first episode, with the Turtles first time above ground after many years of training with Master Splinter. They're making a "Turtles" origin that is firmly rooted in "Turtles" history, but a slight tweak here and a slight tweak there. It's been enjoyable and the IDW series is much the same, in that it's firmly rooted in "Turtles" history, but multiple "Turtles" universes."
The film is rumored to begin production this April. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles features a screenplay by Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco, based on the characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. The Jonathan Liebesman-directed film is scheduld for a June 6, 2014 release date.

If the Turtles are still aliens the movie is not true to the characters, period.
IDW and Nick changed some things but still stayed true to the franchise roots which is why they're good reboots. I don't know if this can do the same.

what 90% of the population? its just a few fanboys bitching about it, don't make up some fake stat like that without proof to back it up,there are far more megan fox fans out there than haters. over 40mil likes on her fb page is a good indication of how many fans she has.
for most ppl it will be a summer popcorn flick that they will watch for the action and they don't really care about who is playing April. She is eye candy that will sell tickets.
A few ppl on tmnt forums not liking her as April is not 90% of the population.. plus you have not even seen what she will look like in the movie and what her role will be. Kevin Eastman has seen the story, If he says its going to be good, I have faith that its going to be good.

90% of the population who already likes the turtles. They are pitching the movie to a much broader audience (who probably don't care who plays the part) than just us fans. Megan Fox sells tickets, or so I believe.
Anyway, as someone already said: I hope you're right kevin...

A. You've clearly never seen someone make an exaggerated remark before. Way to waste your words. The point is, they claim they're doing things for turtles fans, when realistically they don't care what we have to say.
B. Her fans can kick rocks. Most turtle fans are throwing a fit over this, and I'm not talking about just the drome. The fact she's just eye candy to sell tickets (your words, not mine, though I agree) is the problem.
C. I know what her role will be, she's been confirmed for April already.
D. Kevin Eastman is responsible for The Next Mutation & thought Venus was a great character/idea. Don't you dare sit there and act like his opinions really bear any weight for what most turtle fans will feel.

I thought they cleared the air saying the Mutagen is alien, not that the Turtles themselves were aliens. In which case it's fairly true to the original story

The leaked script had shown they were in fact from a planet of humanoid turtle warriors. Even Shredder was an alien in it. The script itself has since been tossed, but whether or not any of the concepts are still being used remains to be seen. Based on the above statement by Kevin, I guess they're not... One never knows, though.

1. A simple twitter search (https://twitter.com/search/realtime?q=megan+fox+april) will show that people do not approve of Megan Fox's casting.
2. Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Olsen were considered for the role. Regardless of this 90% business, Powder's point still stands that it was absolutely not a decision made "with respect to the fans."
3. Michael Bay lied about not having anything to do with the leaked script. So why should we believe that that script was trashed?
4. Let's all remember what a "fan" is. I've met countless people who watched the TMNT cartoon as a kid, and don't even remember the turtles' names, or what color their bananas were. And if you've ever worn a TMNT t-shirt as an adult, you've probably run into those people to. They were fans. they enjoyed the show. But it's not a part of their life that stuck with them. Some pizza and a "cowabunga" is all the fan service they'll need, and Michael Bay probably knows that.

i have no doubt that leaked script is what they WHERE going to go with. some kind soul leaked it, the up roar happened, and now they are probably going to make a few changes.. but knowing the ego of Mr.Bay, probably not many.
If they listen to Kevin At all :Mr.Bay nods, pretends he's listening and thinks 'sure old man..boobs..explosions is where i'm going'...his soul purpose is to at least try and make sure they don't crap all over it like they did transformers...

They never cleared any air. There has never, ever been any response from any of TPTB -- Kevin included -- that has said, "No, they're not aliens in the film." Rather, they've danced around the question with "Well, there is some precedent for alien stuff, given the alien origin of the Utrom mutagen..." which is not a "No" by any means whatsoever. They could have very easily nipped the "OMG, the Turtles are aliens in this!" thing in the bud at many junctures but have very strategically opted not to... methinks because that's an aspect that's probably survived into the shooting script.

Eastman's track record shows he's mos def a company man. he'll shill for whoever's signing the checks. he's gotten lucky with idw, but thats because he's supported by a whole staff of real talent over there. that also gets him cred. thing is, though...if idw had turned out crap, he'd prolly still be shilling the hell outta it. next mutation is proof that he, at the very least, is capable of saying something's good and cheering behind it at every moment, when in fact it is rather horrible. at this point, my positivity is waning and im really just expecting disappointment. :ohwell:

I really wish I could put any stock into what Eastman says, but I can't. It's already been pointed out multiple times that he was the driving force behind The Next Mutation and Venus, and I also thought "Bodycount" was garbage. I'll always respect him for his huge role in fathering the Turtles, but he's really the TMNT equivalent of George Lucas at this point. Completely out of touch with the fanbase of his own creation.

Yes they did clear the air saying the mutagen was of alien origin and not the turtles themselves. It was liebsman who said it, the interview was on youtube.
This reminds me of the time Transformers was coming out. Certain groups of fanboys were outraged over **** like Optimus Prime had flames on him & how they looked etc..there were death threats and all of that, but then the movie came out and went on to make billions and bring in a whole new set of fans to the series, I think it will be the same thing here. You will still have a weird set of fans that will hate, but it will bring in millions of new fans. You can't always please everyone!
You guys are hating on the movie based on some super old script that was tossed aside ages ago, a miss quote from Bay that was cleared up by liebsman. You have not seen anything yet! I have faith in the project. We need to see something first before we start judging, only after watching it will i say if the movie sucked or not.
As for Megan Foxes fans, trust me there are millions out there. There are far more Megan Fox forums & fansites out there than there are TMNT forums. There are ppl who will watch this movie just for her. i've seen loads of ppl say that Even at the transformers red carpet events, far more ppl were interested in Megan Fox than the movie itself.
As for what role she will play in the movie, yes i know she is April O'Neil, but we dont know if she is a news reporter, scientist, student or something else.. We dont know how much screen time she has. As long as the main focus is on the turtles and not her, im happy.

40 million likes on a facebook page don't make Megan Fox any better actor.
I have as low expectations as I can for this movie, then I'll be either not too disappointed or slightly impressed. it's what stance I have until we see an actual trailer.
Platinum Dunes makes okay movies at best, not good movies, just 'okay' at best.
The best thing as for now is the amount of money the movie will make on the popcorn movie goers, that will be used to make better things. Just like the TF franchise.

If you're trying to make some sort of point against my argument, you clearly failed to read my post properly. You're just repeating yourself. Who the hell gives a God damn about Megan Fox's fanbase? Not me. We're talking about direct quotes here, that these guys are doing the film for us. You yourself have just proved my point, THEY'RE NOT DOING THIS FILM FOR US. It's for casuals & the other brain-dead minions of the world who're drawn out of their caves to see explosions and cheap broads who've gone under the knife a few too many times.
You sound like a damn fanboy yourself, ranting and raving about having confidence in this production team, how you were in this same position when Transformers was in the works. You're just a hypocritical Baytard as far as I can tell... & for Christ's sake, you're named after that ridiculous excuse for an interpretation of Shredder. Get some credibility.
"Fanboy" rage has nothing to do with the film being popular. You're acting like they were mad and then somehow 'proved wrong' because a bunch of vagrants paid to see the film. Those people don't give a flying frappuccino about the integrity of that franchise, they just wanted to be entertained. They're not real Transformers fans. Those films don't honor the Transformers, they bastardize them. That doesn't mean they were unsuccessful, it just means the fans were RIGHT to feel that way.
This whole bit about people being more interested in Megan than the actual film, IS MY POINT. That is the problem, pal. She takes away from the importance of the turtles. She's a distraction. People will be too focused on her. It doesn't matter what profession this version of April has, because she's Megan Fox. Nonredeemable. & you'd be a dense fool to think she's not going to get an ass-load of screen time. She'll probably be the star of the film.
You tell me I'm not supposed to be frustrated at what has been PROVEN TRUTH, while you sit there having total faith in the UNKNOWN. I think we know who's better set their expectations here...
Colonel Schrader

@Powder what US do you keep talking about? there is no US when it comes to TMNT fans, it's a wide range of ppl with different tolerance levels... some can accept change some cannot.. some like the original movies, some do not.. just like some ppl hate the Nick toon.
there is always going to be a group of ppl that will hate on something or the other, like with the new tmnt game, some ppl like the look of the turtles, some do not.. from what they have said they are trying to please most fans but still make a few changes, they can't please everyone.
and what proven truth do you have, other than Megan Fox is April? you know NOTHING other than that about the movie.. you haven't seen ****!

As goofy and shallow as the Transformers movies were, they did seem to create new fans. But I was never a huge Transformers fan. I didn't experience my favorite characters reduced to goofy caricatures who hump and piss on things.
But I'm sure everyone involved in the making of this film would love to make a "Transformers of TMNT."

Every quote I've read just talks about the mutagen's comic book alien origins as a smokescreen and never, ever addresses the "Are they aliens in the film still?" with a yes or a no.Well Kevin did say this.Michael Bay said the turtles would be aliens, the point he was working from was that the mutagen that mutated the Turtles going back to issue one is alien nature. Which may be a point being played up in the movie. So when the backlash happened we had to say, ‘Go back and look at the issue, its right there!’”

I'm kind of looking forward to seeing if the Turtles will actually use their weapons the way they were actually designed for. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Megan Fox's April has a scene where her clothing gets torn up by Mousers while trying to evade them until the Turtles rescue her.
The Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street remakes did kind of stay true to the source material but they were seen as inferior to the original product. Particularly Jackie Earle Haley is no Robert Englund being the most common.

Well Kevin did say this:
"Michael Bay said the turtles would be aliens, the point he was working from was that the mutagen that mutated the Turtles going back to issue one is alien nature. Which may be a point being played up in the movie. So when the backlash happened we had to say, ‘Go back and look at the issue, its right there!’"
Right. So where in there is Kevin saying they're not aliens?
All this "We want to make a film for the fans" is something they all say when any adaptation is getting made. It’s not just Eastman who is guilty of that. The harsh reality is, the fans are the last group of people they care about. There are a whole host of reasons for that, the main one being that they want to make a film that will please the majority rather than the minority (and no, by saying that I'm not advocating the whole alien thing. I'm just speaking generally). Another reason is that they know full well that, even with all the moaning and whatnot, there is a very good chance the majority of the fans will bite the bullet and buy a ticket anyway.

I'm curious how long Evan Daugherty has been working on his "current draft" that Deadline reported on a couple of weeks back.
Inquisitr also made mention of him putting "his own unique spin" on the story.

Yeah I'm pretty sure they said that about the Transformers films too and look how they turned out. A lot of longtime fans hated them. I kind of enjoyed them for what they were but that may be because I didn't give a damn about Transformers as a kid and wasn't as offended about the portrayal of the characters.
And I don't really give a damn about Megan Fox either. All I really want from a TMNT movie is to see the TMNT portrayed accurately. If they do them right I'm sure I'll love it. But I don't know how I'll react if they pull a bayformers with the film.

Yeah, I’m most interested by that, too. Funny how there was no official announcement of him coming on board, when there usually is whenever a new writer joins the party.
There are ppl who will watch this movie just for her. i've seen loads of ppl say that Even at the transformers red carpet events, far more ppl were interested in Megan Fox than the movie itself.I this is a bit different from Transformers, they are talking about changing the turtles whole origin not just how they look. I wouldn't exactly call a year "ages ago", yes the script was old, but we still don't know what the current script looks like. I'm still don't know where you are getting this idea that Fox will sell tickets. Yes the first two Transformers films did well but the third film without her did the best. This Is 40 did ok but Fox wasn't the star of that film. Every other film Fox did bombed at the box office.
There was never any credibility to the franchise.I don't see how it has any less credibility than any other comic book franchise out there.

Completely true, and I think the expectancy for them to make a movie for the sole purpose of entertaining the die-hard fanbase is a level of entitlement that doesn't open itself up to reason. It's that line of thinking that really hurt The Amazing Spider-Man, despite the fact that it respected the franchise and maintained the integrity of the characters. Changes were made to freshen things up and make them more modern, but at the end of the day, Peter Parker was a science nerd whose parents left him to be raised by his aunt and uncle, was bitten by a scientifically modified spider and gained superpowers. He was into photography and became a crimefighter after his uncle was murdered by a thug that Peter had the chance to stop. Sounds like Spider-Man to me.
That's what they need to do with TMNT. Turtles mutated by a mysterious ooze. Raised in the sewers and trained in martial arts by Splinter, their rat sensei. Leonardo the serious leader, Donatello the genius inventor, Raphael the frustrated hothead, and Michelangelo the innocent wisecracker. They befriend April O'Neil and do battle with Shredder and his foot ninja. That's The bare essentials, and I honestly can't see this movie not having any of those things.
After that point, there's still a ton of room for a fresh new film. What do the characters look like? Where did the ooze originate? Were they mutated accidentally or purposefully? Is Splinter Hamato Yoshi or is he Yoshi's pet? Are the Utrom or Krang involved? Bebop and Rocksteady? Technodrome? Casey Jones? Is Shredder merely human or something more ala 4Kids? Dimension X or Rock Soldiers? There are tons of variables.

Old Hob, Krang, Slash, the Neutrinos, etc would have all been shot down in a second if PL was in charge of what IDW was doing. Because he's gone Kevin allows them to use characters we never would have gotten to see otherwise.

Who saying they aren't trying to make a good movie. All I'm saying is that making a movie aimed for hardcore fans and only hardcore fans would make no money whatsoever.
The original argument is whether they are making a movie with respect to fans not necessarily hardcore fans.
It's true that there is very few hardcore fans of TMNT and very few that are fans of any specific facet of the franchise, be it the Mirage comics, The Fred Wolf cartoon, the Golden Harvest movies, the 4Kids cartoon and so on. But the amount of people that are fans that have even vaguely enjoyed any of the material and think fondly of it that they'd be willing to see a big live action TMNT movie are plentiful.
The leaked script we got was nothing at all like any incarnation of TMNT that it wouldn't really satisfy even the vaguest of fans on that level.
I don't doubt that everyone working on the movie thinks its great and that it should make fans happy but that doesn't mean it will. I'm pretty sure most movies based on established properties are made with the same intention but that's not always how it ends up. In fact I'll even go as far as say that based on the leaked script I don't think it would even satsy your average movie goer looking for a simple action flick. Even though we're not working with that script we've heard nothing that would alter my belief that we're getting something much better.

The way I see it, once you create something and release it to the world, it becomes it's own life, open to interpretation. I see it as a separate entity. While it's interesting to hear their thoughts because the have a unique perspective, I don't give Eastman and Laird's opinions more weight than anyone else's, as if they are the gods of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
TMNT is all of ours to interpret and form opinions about.
All I'm saying is that making a movie aimed for hardcore fans and only hardcore fans would make no money whatsoever. And what makes you think what fans want wouldn't also be liked by the general audience as well?

And what makes you think what fans want wouldn't also be liked by the general audience as well?
Because even hardcore fans can't decide what they like half the time. You have to cherry pick and alter in order to make a movie that'll catch everyone.
I see a lot of people here say that City at war should be the plot of this movie. The story that was thigh deep in comic continuity, it would be ridiculous and confusing.
Accessibility is key.

That's the business of major motion pictures. If you have to make a hundreds of millions of dollars, you have to make a movie that appeals to people who've never cared about the property before. It's the price you pay for big budgets, realistic special effects, and big name actors. Same goes for every comic book movie that ever found success. Because most people don't read comics.
A major motion picture is probably the most confined, restricted way to tell a story...

Exactly...
Although do I trust Laird's opinions more than Eastman's? Hell yeah. He tells it how it is, you are never left guessing why he said one thing and meant another. I'll repeat that Eastman sees TMNT through rose-colored spectacles. I don't think I've ever even read a bad opinion from him about anything TMNT-related regarding creative decisions NOT made by him or Laird.
Eastman's words don't ka-bosh the alien origin, only he mentions that the origin is "true" to the Turtles. Ok, so what the heck does that mean? Probably that we're screwed, they're aliens, but "it's cool, dude" cause the origin is somewhat distantly related to Mirage's "dark" tone.

Really hope this isn't just a sugar coating.
I'm afraid it is, they need Kevin to help keep their idea alive and find ways to tie it into their origin.
If the Turtles are still aliens the movie is not true to the characters, period.
IDW and Nick changed some things but still stayed true to the franchise roots which is why they're good reboots. I don't know if this can do the same.
Nick's version is reminiscent to the retro turtles in 80s-90s and it shows, they certainly show more love to the turtles than what I gather so far from Michael and Liebesman who tell the fans to "chill out". They know what they're doing would frustrate fans of the turtles by changing mutants to alien or they're truly that ignorant. The Transformers series was decently successful but overall most Transformers fans dislike the trilogy.
90% of the population who already likes the turtles. They are pitching the movie to a much broader audience (who probably don't care who plays the part) than just us fans. Megan Fox sells tickets, or so I believe.
Anyway, as someone already said: I hope you're right kevin...
If they truly chose Megan for the part just for selling tickets, then they really don't have the faith in their own creation as they should if there were heart and soul put into it. One doesn't need eye candy for their lead female role if the story is well written enough and put on screen. The turtles' origin was well written with a unique idea and that's why it sold, that's why it got the cartoon series, movie series, a couple more TV adaptations, and with these adaptations they sold many toys and more comic books. The turtles fans alone would make it a blockbuster, not even the opening night of TMNT back in 2007 when I went to see it in theaters, it was jam-packed weeks after it's release. Turtles fans if they love the movie will watch it multiple times in theaters and the audience is already huge especially thanks to the cartoon adaptations in the past decade.
Kevin Eastman I would trust but again, I strongly feel he's just sugar coating it to help them handle the audience. To be honest, if it continues from previous explanations, I will not be seeing the movie in theaters and hope those who also complain about it won't either.

First Ninja Turtles movie - opened at #1 with $25.3 million and remained at the top spot for 4 weeks. At the end of its run it grossed $135.2 million domestically (#5 for the year) and $201.9 million worldwide (#9 for the year).
With its low-budget and high merchandise revenue it was the year's most profitable movie. Meanwhile, Dick Tracy had to settle for $103.7 million domestically and $162.7 million worldwide on a $47 million budget.
2nd - $78,656,813 (didn't go worldwide)
3rd - $42,273,609
TMNT - Domestic sales - $54,149,098 Foreign sales - $41,459,878 Worldwide - $95,608,976
Grand total of all 4 movies - US - $310,345,435 Foreign - $108,159,878 Worldwide - $418,505,313
That's still really good for the first alone. The second and third did worse, true, but they still made profit. Turtles fans are not the only ones but they made up majority of the audience for each of the above movies unless you believe a good chunk have died. It ultimately comes down to us fans who judge about what kind of product the staff create for us, and Kevin seems to be rather dry with his explanation; just another "press reset and start with origin template #1: Four Turtles mutated, trained by Splinter, seeking revenge on Shredder/Foot Clan with good friend April to assist". In other words, aside from the very basics, its all up to them. Popularity of major franchises tend to come in waves. Currently with the Nick reruns along with a filler episode, there's a bit of a lull in TMNT popularity, though still higher than it was a year ago. Sure this movie like most mid-to high nine figure blockbusters will be promoted to death, but it does show that taking risks does show courage that escaping the comfort zone (which I hope Bay does) will entice fans that the new film is like no other TMNT film made. There's always a hater for someone on this planet, but it all comes down to imagination: forgetting who the star is and believing that the characters come to life and gets a virtual truth of existence that opens people's hearts and makes them say "That was great, there's so much that happened that I want more!"

i wonder how long a thread that simply collected all of "these" types of posts would be. i dont disagree, but can we get some deeper more constructive thoughts and discussions going? geez...
All I'm saying (through my last sarcastic post) is that Michael Bay will not be providing a deep, rich, and very story-driven TMNT. It's unfortunate, but let's take cues from his movies such as the Transformers series.
I was highly disappointed with his lack of characterization in the Autobots and Decepticons. It seemed as though all the human characters got the best character development and dialogue. All the Transformer characters were 1-dimensional and severely lacking. The only decently done character was Optimus Prime (mainly because of the voice actor too, not so much the story). The only good movie out of Bay's Transformers was the 1st movie.
Back to the TMNT movie. Now if the action, special effects, and eye candy (I'm looking at you Megan Fox) is good, then of course the movie will do well in box office, there will probably be lots of toys to tie-in with the movie, AND there will be lots more TMNT "fans."
With all that said, I don't think Michael Bay is the one to give us the Turtle experience that we want of on the big screen.

Because even hardcore fans can't decide what they like half the time. You have to cherry pick and alter in order to make a movie that'll catch everyone.
The origin of the turtles is not something fans contest. People can argue all day about whether the turtles should be comedic or edgy, or the series should be SciFi or more down-to-Earth, Frank Miller-ish, or whether they would rather see Karai or Krang in the next incarnation, but none of this divisive fanbase debates or decries that the turtles were mutated by mutagen spilled in a freak accident. That is not something anyone adapting the series would have to worry about with regards to alienating part of the fanbase. (Pun not intended.) Simultaneously, I fail to see how being faithful to that origin story would repel the mainstream at all.
I see a lot of people here say that City at war should be the plot of this movie. The story that was thigh deep in comic continuity, it would be ridiculous and confusing.
Accessibility is key.
I think what people are thinking there, is that had Turtles V actually existed, that seemed to be where it was headed. At least, that's the only reason I see for Karai to have been in the fourth movie at all. Yes; I agree with you that it would be a very quixotic choice of a movie, and would probably be watered down much as it was in the 2003 cartoon, but I can assure you there are plenty of fans who ask for a lot less than an adaptation of that arc.
Again, I get that there are certain things that repel as many people as they attract, but there are certain things that don't, too. Megan Fox as April? Yeah, I get why they did that, but even speaking capitalistically, what the shell does making the Turtles aliens accomplish? Are aliens statistically more marketable than mutants? Are firearms and explosives more marketable than martial arts? I think the margin is close enough that going against the core fandom on those points is hardly necessary to ensure greater profits.
Furthermore, I see plenty of ways they could have included a lot of the stuff they want to sell the mainstream without fudging the continuity so much. If they want the Turtles to fight aliens, well, that's fine, but that doesn't require them to be aliens. If they want a military-themed villain, why not Bishop? If they want the core villain to be an alien, why not just make him Krang instead of Shredder? There's business, there's the lowest common denominator, but then there's also just plain stupid filmmaking, and I think you give Michael Bay too much credit if you're claiming he's some great entrepreneur. Shell; he fired Megan Fox from the Tranformers movies on the basis of a rude comment she made about him; clearly that wasn't a profit-minded decision.
I don't think Michael Bay is any more of a smart, pragmatic capitalist than he is a respectful mythologist; his decision-making feels less-motivated by profitability and more by him just having a one-track mind and a huge ego. He can only make one type of movie, and that type of movie happening to appeal to the masses only proves that a broken clock is right twice a day. There are other people who make movies that appeal to the masses and don't suck. There is more than one type of movie that appeals to the masses. There is more than one actress who sells tickets by her mere presence. (Though honestly, I don't hate Megan Fox at all.) The particular decisions that were made did not have to be made to sell this movie, and kick this one around, if this license as it was didn't sell well, then why seize it and make a movie at all?

I have these same questions - how is making them aliens supposed to improve the marketability? Especially since the most successful recent superhero movies have been quite faithful to the comics and the history of the characters?
I hope either everything we've heard about this movie is wrong, or the movie is based exactly on that leaked script and it tanks. Either way, at least I still have the old movies and comics and stuff.
Honestly - the new Nick cartoon is so successful, why would the parent company want something released that goes against the aspects of the cartoon that make it successful?

I think people are referring to the style of action sequences and the casting of Megan Fox. The alien thing tends to get lumped in there with the JC Penney catalog-style casting. Yeah, who doesn't appreciate some eye candy, but let's be real, what was the real reason why people kept coming back to the Transformers films? The action! Making the turtles and Master Splinter aliens has little bearing on the action.

Actually, I didn't come back to the series after the second movie, because its action was awful and often incomprehensible, when it was there at all. I actually liked Mkaila; she was a headstrong and dedicated heroine who straight-up killed a Decepticon with her car, but it doesn't matter; that's not what a Transformers movie should focus on.
Still, if Megan Fox can play April as that sort of badass, and pick up some martial arts skills to go with it, then maybe all is not lost. Now, if I found out they casted Shia Lebeuf as Casey Jones, then I would be scared!

Apparently, every character needs to be a badass these days. Though, this is not the way I would describe Megan Fox's character in, well, just about anything she is in. There's no illusion to why she's really there.

I think Anna Kendrick would be better suited for the role of April, but honestly i'm just excited about another TMNT movie.

She doesn't need to be a badass, but my point is that if she has to be played by Megan Fox, make the most of it. Maybe not directly fighting, but at least running some Foot over with a news van. Casey does need to do some fighting; or I guess not, but my enduring point is that the more everyone in the movie is punching, kicking, bonking, stabbing, or slashing others, the less I have to care about the stupid plot.

Why does April O'Neil need to be a badass?
Exactly. In the 1990 movie she was just a regular woman. Sure, she cracked a few Foot Soldier skulls with the help of Michelangelo, but in the grand scheme of things she generally shied away from the fighting.
I honestly think MF has it in her to do a good job (not a great job) in this role. As I keep saying to every negative thing said about this film - wait until the trailer. Then you can have a proper whinge about things. The reality is that we only have casting details. Very little has leaked from the production. People just seem to be assuming this will be a steaming pile, whereas I am choosing to stay optimistic until I see a trailer. Then I can drown my hopes of seeing a good new TMNT film, or get really excited to see the film. Either way I will be paying to see it.

I think the looks of the actors is more to have pretty faces on the red carpet. The leaked script did tout the Turtles to be huge, 6 1/2 to 7 ft. I am hoping they won't be too far from the Turtles we know. I am fine with the look of the majority of incarnations throughout the comic book, cartoons and movies.

I have little to no worries about how the turtles will look. I don't overly care about the Turtles' heights; 7 foot mutant turtles make just as much sense as 5 foot mutant turtles. Furthermore, I feel confident that the actual appearance of the turtles will be fine too; Bay' team isn't going to want anything that will turn off the average viewer, so I expect it to be a pretty safe portrayal.
Nor do I even care about April's shade of hair color or EVEN Fox's casting.
Just don't use that leaked script. Get competent writing. That's it. That's all that I'm worried about. With a good script and not terrible directing, this movie will be enjoyable and I'll happily see it time and again.

I’m all for evolution and development, but for me it’s all about tone.
Certain TMNT incarnations (or even elements thereof) work because their tone is respectful of the source material (1990 film, large chunks of 2k3, elements in 2k7, elements of Nick). Other incarnations might be commercially successful (OT, Films 2 and 3) because they appeal to a wider market. The truly offensive stuff was when it became about greed and pushing things for pushing’s sake (Fast Forward, Next Mutation *shudder*).
I thought Michael Bay and team did a good job with the first Transformers film. It brought it into the wider consciousness in a way that was stylish, fun, and referred to source material without being trapped by it. After that, with Transformers 2 & 3, it just got silly (greed again). I agree with many comments here that it would be a shame to focus on human character with the turtles as background characters, as was the case in Transformers. One of the strengths of TMNT is its great characters - they are strong enough to carry a plot. Remembering that Bay’s role for Ninja Turtles is as producer, not director, I await with interest.
The casting of Megan Fox to me shows that investment is going in and that the filmmakers are aiming to appeal to a ‘blockbuster’ audience. That’s a good thing. Would have preferred a genuine red-head (being one myself), but not going to complain ;)
As for the leaked script.... I have no words. Don’t know if ‘teenager’ is a concept that can be applied to aliens, seeing as it originated in the US in the 1950s on Earth; aliens are not mutants. They are just aliens; ninjutsu is an art of Japan... Earth! And turtles are a species of... where, again? oh yeah... EARTH. The concept just doesn’t work with the turtles as aliens. This is pushing change for change’s sake. Trying to be clever. They can make it as dark as they like, but I watch TMNT for the realism, the characters and the awesome martial arts. Fingers crossed that this idea has been canned.
If there’s a moody city with long shadows and crime down narrow, graffitied alley-ways, it’ll tick the boxes in the ‘tone’ department. As I said, I can cope with change providing any changes to core ninja turtles lore are respectful of the source material.

This, I got into Transformers through Beast Wars and Energon saga but until the 2007 movie (best movie out of trilogy honestly and my favorite Transformers movie) while I'm not a big fan of all the decisions I have to admit he brought a certain relevancy and fame to the Transformers movie(and beside every cartoon or video game like Transformers Animated and Transformers Prime, etc took the good ideas from the movie and made the idea worked).
I hope Michael Bay Ninja Turtles could do what IDW, Nick, 2K7(not as much 2k7), 1990 film which is combine the comics and Fred Wolf cartoon and create a new fun TMNT universe did more or less what he did with the first Transformers movie(without killing Jazz or likewise popular hero) and not include some of the parts of the booted script like Colonel Shradder, etc.
Because the film already is far from what I'd consider a faithful interpretation, at this point I would prefer if they just did a 180 and made it as weird as possible. I think I'd like it better. Bring on the aliens and such. Something bizarre to add to the tmnt lexicon.

The Nick cartoon has done an impressive job of reinterpreting something that has been reinterpreted so many times. But it still feels like a rehash. I mean, we're all posting on these forums about which of the things we've seen before that we want to see again, hoping to get all this old stuff back again. Are we gonna do that forever? Are we really gonna be like, "Respect the source material!" For more than 30 years? TMNT has been a success so many ways, it's hard to even tell what "source material" means, anymore. The comics were first, but that's not what made the turtles iconic. And I'm sure comic fans had a fit when OT came out. And in light of the changes that cartoon made, this stuff doesn't sound so crazy.

True, but you have to remember, very few knew the "original" Turtles. It wasn't so much a reinvention as a total recreation. That's very true. But I don't think it's a big deal to stray from that. Your average turtles fan knows that cartoon, the movies, and any of the things that followed, depending on their age. All those things are different. They're not looking back at the comics as the root of it all. I would argue that the turtles don't have a firm mythology.
Granted, the ooze and Shredder would be the closest thing to constants. But the origins of Shredder and the ooze have been bent quite a bit. And I do think an expectancy for Michael Bay to fail has been a major factor in the internet outrage. If 'alien turtles' and Colonel Schrader happen, I expect it to blow over for most people who aren't on these forums.

They did go pretty close. They just made Yoshi into Splinter to avoid having Shredder kill him in the OT, and made the Foot into robots to easily be discarded, and of course kept Shredder alive as the main villain.
Bebop/Rocksteady's gang was obviously loosely based on the Purple Dragons, and the Turtles dynamic with April, Splinter, and Shredder is very similar. Baxter may have been turned white, and Krang was based on the Utroms, but it was all there.
Funny thing is how they took the whole "Turtles in space" arc and changed that into Dimension X and replaced the Triceratons with Rock Soldiers.

The movies looked great, brilliant sfx..more the designs and the uses/neglect of the characters.
I mean-that spy thing is Frenzy? should have just made a new character instead of having it have next to nothing in common with the established character.

Because the film already is far from what I'd consider a faithful interpretation, at this point I would prefer if they just did a 180 and made it as weird as possible. I think I'd like it better. Bring on the aliens and such. Something bizarre to add to the tmnt lexicon.
Hold up. What do you know about the film, apart from casting? How do you know it is "already far from a faithful interpretation"? It's one thing I really dislike, people assuming they know what is going to happen with the film. We literally know nothing. The whole cast haven't even been selected yet for Gods sake. Forgive me if I have taken your comment the wrong way.

They're filming right now. They've shot on at least two locations. Megan Fox has been spotted with red hair, the turtles' actors have been tweeting about NY. This movie is well underway. I would think the main cast is pretty much signed up, and things are just under wraps.
EDIT:
I would point out again that only Megan Fox was announced. Seems like everyone else was just leaked, even if actors did later confirm.

Yet how does any of that make for an unfaithful interpretation?I'm saying that they're well underway with the making of this film, and they haven't disproved the leaked script at all, or denied its elements. The casting falls in line with it, the ski slope filming location falls in line with it (A pretty unique location for a movie about sewer turtles in New York), Eastman's danced around the 'alien' question every time he's been asked, and all Bay has done to ease fears is get caught in a lie about who wrote the script.
So, all we know is that there's no solid reason to think that script was dumped. But that's not 'nothing.'

Didn't Bay come straight out and say that the leaked script everyone has seen was "shredded" a long time ago? Doesn't that directly conflict with your statement above?

Why would he say they scrapped the script (which everyone hated), just to make that same exact movie? That makes zero sense. If people think he did it just to avoid fan backlash, I think Bay is smart enough to know the backlash would then be ten fold immediately upon the movie's release - or even prior as word got out from screenings that the script is exactly what they made.

The Script was dated January of 2012, 2 months before his infamous "from an alien race" comments, authored by Apelbaum and Nemec. When the script was leaked the production had already been suspended indefinitely for script and budgetary reasons. I even saw a report somewhere that a new writer was brought in during this time to fix the script. At this point we don't know what the movie will be about. However, some of the things do match up with things from the leaked script like others have pointed out.

Again, why would they do that? The amount of distrust and assuming here is kind of ridiculous.
These guys aren't politicians. It literally makes ZERO sense for Bay, Eastman, etc. to contradict themselves here. Why would they blatantly lie to fans and directly state that something is or isn't, just to have themselves proven liars later down the road?
Not saying it's never happened or couldn't, it just makes no sense and I'm at a loss for what the motive would be.
Once again, if these turtles are "aliens" because the mutagen that transforms them to mutant turtles is from an alien race, well then sure - they can indeed be considered "aliens" or derived from an "alien" source/race.

Right. My point is that when Bay made the infamous quote that these turtles were "alien" he could have been referring to the crap script, he could have been referencing the "alien" ooze which mutated them, or he could have been talking about something else altogether. We don't know for sure, thus, nothing is certain including that they are "alien". Well, the generally accepted (no matter the universe) origin of the turtles is that their origin is from alien created ooze. So, assuming that is still the case in this new movie version, why would they deny it? Their origin has always been and still would be "alien" even here, correct?

Beside the point. The outcry when Bay used the word alien was hat the turtles would be aliens. And he never denied it.
The script is dated January.
Bay uses the word 'alien' in march. When people freak out,he doesn't say, "No. They aren't aliens." He says chill out, you haven't read the script.
LATER the script from January leaks, and the turtles are legitimately not of Earth.
When he said 'alien' he meant 'alien.' Things could have changed since then. I just don't see a reason to think they have.

Not sure how many times I can state the same thing...you don't know more than anyone else here. It may "seem" they are doing something, but until we know for sure, we don't know.
It's quite possible they will use the majority of the script and simply eliminate the turtles being from Dimension X and also make "Col. Schradder" actually Shredder. That would allow the TMNT to retain their true origin, while still using the same script. There are countless ways they could be handling this, and we are all making assumptions on what, 2 details we've seen about the actual filming that has begun and an old script that has been reported as being trashed, or at the very least, gone through major re-writes.

Just wanted to reiterate what Eastman said, which was documented in the OP:
I'm not sure what else he could say to alleviate the fear some fans have regarding this movie and what it's all about. I choose to believe that Eastman isn't steering us wrong in this case - until proven otherwise. I think even he would agree that the leaked script was a lot more than a "slight tweak here and there" on the TMNT.
He compares this version to the new Nick cartoon - in that they are making subtle changes and rebooting the story, but not in any significant way. I see no reason to doubt him.

We know for a fact that Bay us lying about it being before he and Platinum Dunes came on board. It was dated January of 2012, 2 months before his "alien race" comments. PD and Michael Bay signed on in 2010 and the film was supposed to begin filming for a Christmas 2013 release. We can also point out that it was written by Apelbaum and Nemec who were brought on by PD. They were the 3rd or 4th writers for this film after Fusco and the guys who wrote the first Iron Man.
The script being scrapped has some validity as the production being halted when it leaked, but it's doubtful they completely dropped everything that was in it especially if the same writers reworked it. (I believe I saw they brought someone else in.) I'm very curious as to what lead Will Arnett was cast as. He certainly would fit Colonel Schrader from the leaked script.

Bay Also said:
"To end this stupid merry go round and explain the math...Yes we signed on two years ago to Turtles, but with no deal in place. Deal completed towards end of last year. And yes, thats how long deals sometimes take. So no work was done on the script. Blame Paramount, not us for the first draft.

That comment is from 2012. "Towards the end of last year" means towards the end of 2011. The comment does nothing to distance his guys from a script dated for the end of January 2012. Nope! I'm here to stay.
Then make it like first film, not big budget and no known actors but true and serious, no sex jokes and close ups of aprils breasts or butt like transformers

These are basically my feelings on Star Trek, as well :ohwell:

I should rephrase and specify just to clear up any misinterpretation I'm not calling everyone that goes to see action movies a mindless drone. I am calling the kids and their parents that buy into the merchandising hype mindless drones. I am also calling the people that lined up multiple times to watch Ryan Reynolds run the Hal Jordan character through a shredder mindless drones.
Ninja Turtles are going to be HOT when this movie drops. The merchandise will come in a tidal wave. Then some other jerkoff is going to find a tried and true property we enjoyed as kids and try to squeeze every dollar out of it before disposing of the property.
That's what makes me ticked off about this whole thing. Hell I'd be just fine of they scrapped this project. I'll look at it as potential dirt on the TMNT name being swept away.

dunno how old you are, but 20 years ago a bunch of kids and their parents DID buy into the merchandising hype. this website, forum or many of us fans (the "mindless drones" from 2 decades ago) wouldnt be here if not for that hype.
my question is why WOULDNT hype be good for the franchise?

ummm, again dunno your age, but for many of us, this IS that property...

I am 27 years of age bro. And even at the tender age of seven did I rarely throw a fit for anything Ninja Turtles, that's because I grew up dirt floor poor. All of MY Turtles figures, comics or any other paraphernalia was hand me down. I knew the true value of a dollar. I wasn't able to cry to mommy and daddy to take me to K Mart to get the new Footski set. Maybe you were, but I knew better.
And I meant to say ANOTHER property we liked as kids. For example its just like if Bay did a Thundercats movie.
Hype isn't all that great. I don't like having rebooted properties shoved down my throat, maybe you're into seeing something you like so saturated it becomes meaningless. People that just like TMNT because its hot right now after a few weeks its on to the next one. I dislike people like that.
Also I liked the TURTLES FOR THE TURTLES! Not the Shellraiser or Sewer Play set or any tv advert. Watching the show was free, pretending to be Leonardo or Raphael was free. And last time I checked this was a FAN site. I'm pretty damn sure not specifically a merchandising site. Not a site specifically tailored for collectors and people with disposable income to show off their newest turtles toy. Its for ALL Turtles fans.
I never said I wouldn't watch the movie. I'm saying in its current state it looks like its going to be trash. I respect the TMNT as more than just a "toy/cartoon characters" to me they are friends and I respect my friends and get pissed when anyone tries to make them look bad or take advantage of them. Don't get me twisted I know these are fictional characters, but that does not mean I have to stand by without at least defending the good name that Eastman and Laird created. The Turtles are a national treasure, not some throwaway property that lives out the rest of its days as a "Michael Bay FUBAR Film" to the Turtles illiterate. I want to see fans as fans for the right reasons.
Does that make me a bad person? Maybe, but devil may care.

I'm 26. I don't even know when I got into TMNT, because it was too early in my life to pinpoint. Yeah, I had a lot of silly toys. Yeah, it was a merchandising frenzy, and they milked every dollar out of our parents that they could.
But TMNT changes all the time. And the way I see it, there's the original, and then there are a bunch of reiterations that you might as well put on an equal plane. Because they're each as legitimate as the last. TMNT is not a holy script to be misinterpreted or blasphemed. It exists a property. By its nature, it can change hands and be portrayed in different ways by different people who chose to focus of different things.
However this movie turns out is the way it turns out. We don't have to like it, and we don't have to pay for it. But it is what it is. This movie will be TMNT, it's really going to happen, and it will be the TMNT that millions of kids grow up with. And if the franchise persists, those kids are going to feel the same way in the future, when someone else comes along to start over.
If you want to be a Mirage purist, I guess I can see the merit in that. But if your love for TMNT is based a couple of reinterpretations (especially the OT that took all kinds of liberties), you may as well buckle up and see where these movies take you. Because this is the next thing.
_____
It was mistake to compare this to Star Trek. We're not talking about a deep and enlightening exterior view of humanity's ethical and political issues. TMNT is about walking, talking turtles who fight ninjas and aliens. I don't think it's reasonable to act like people who like a bang-boom-hiya-explosion version of TMNT are lower-level fans, like they don't know the true TMNT.

I understand where you're coming from chrisdude. And I see the merits in your words.
I guess all I am trying to say is I wish everyone would look past the hype, ninjitsu and explosions when you see anything ninja turtles, remember what TMNT is really about. Brotherhood, Honor, Vengeance and a fathers love for his sons. To me those are what the Mirage turtles taught me. The '90 Turtles Movie taught me that its alright to look to my father and brothers for help when life threw me for a loop. Although it has evolved into so much more that is what I take from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Anyways I've derailed the thread long enough, and I apologize.

i dont get the connection...are you saying you're a "better" fan because your love for the turtles is deeper than the value of the money other fans spent? i dont see what how you grew up has to do with the integrity of a property in terms of the larger fan base and definitely dont get why you think it means a marketing blitz is bad for the franchise.
And I meant to say ANOTHER property we liked as kids. For example its just like if Bay did a Thundercats movie
happens all the time. transformers, obviously. the first gi joe flick. star wars, godzilla, star trek (depending on who you ask). even stuff like thunderbirds, the avengers (british), etc etc etc... doesnt mean it doesnt suck or that the care given to these properties shouldnt matter, it's just that given the circumstances regarding the situation "our" franchise is in, it could be worse. not in terms of plot or casting (duh), but in terms of the attention these crappy things are getting from the media and to the mainstream as positives. is megan fox the best april? no! is bay producing unfortunate? yes! but it means A LOT of people are going to see it and maybe that'll lead some of them to check out the awesome nicktoon or idw comic. thats looking at it objectively, of course.
Hype isn't all that great. I don't like having rebooted properties shoved down my throat, maybe you're into seeing something you like so saturated it becomes meaningless. People that just like TMNT because its hot right now after a few weeks its on to the next one. I dislike people like that.
so you dislike em. thats your deal. no ones telling you talk to them or associate with them in any way. and, really? "shoved down your throat"? no ones holding a gun to your head. and it only becomes meaningless, if you let it. all this sounds like a big ol clump of personal probs, bruh.

really? cause of a few of the "points" you tried to make sound like you saying the section of fandom thats not uber pissed at the movie situation and dont think the "hype" is detrimental are mindless drones. and again, i dont see what spending or not spending money has to do with ones cred as a fan.

doesn't make you a bad person, just an incredibly self-rigtheous one.
(and as much as i love the tmnt, i'd hardly call them a national treasure. it'd be nice if they were, but they're not. :ohwell: )

But, why? Honestly, what's it to you if any of that stuff comes to pass? You're just sounding like an old nerd who get's angry because something that was once "his" now belongs to everybody (if they want it). That mentality really grinds me. It just stinks of fanboy self-loathing. Just don't bloody go and watch it and give the studio money if you feel so strongly about it. Simple solution. Also, people didn't go back again and again and watch Green Lantern. It was a colossal financial failure. So people aren't as "mindless" as you obviously think.

As long as TMNT keeps the face of the Nick show for a long time, I´m cool with it.
Granted, we haven´t even seen how Bay´s turtles will look... but I still think they´re doing a pretty dang good job with the Nick show which only makes me more afraid of Bay ruining the franchise just as it was becoming cool again to a wider audience.
Like... imagine if the OT was just starting to take off. Not even going to 2nd season yet, and suddenly, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is made.

Did I ever say I was a better fan than anyone? No. I said that I looked at the turtles not as just toys and a cartoon when I was younger. But something more...
"Personal Problems" have nothing to do with it. I'm not some mysterious internet persona who builds up this whole "I'm mad at the world for people loving the turtles" attitude. I gave you a little background on how my relationship with the franchise developed during my adolescent years, not for you to sit there and multi-quote your little heart out or pick my post apart in some attempt to "knock me down a peg."
I know I'm not the greatest fan, there are plenty of people with more knowledge about TMNT. I respect that and I never directly called anyone on the 'Drome a mindless drone. If you want to identify with 80% of our misguided social strata, as sad as it may be you're welcome to do so.
MY POINT BEING PEOPLE SHOULD LOOK PAST THE TMNT NAME NOT JUST AS MOVIES AND TOYS. BUT FOR ITS DEEPER MEANINGS. I know the movie is going to pass, maybe I'll see it and maybe I'll wait until someone posts a review then I'll see what I'm "missing out on."
Edit-
Also, people didn't go back again and again and watch Green Lantern. It was a colossal financial failure. So people aren't as "mindless" as you obviously think.
Oh so you were obviously in the Harkins Theatre with me opening night as I heard multiple people walk past me saying things like "I loved this let's go see it again!" and my personal favorite "The movie dunks the comics." Wait, did you take a trip to the states to see how people really felt about it? Just because you look at the numbers and what critics say does not make you the source on how this movie was received by regular moviegoers.

Why do people care if other people like films they don't like? So, some people liked it, who cares? They're not making another Green Lantern film with Ryan Reynolds, so it doesn't matter who does and doesn't like it.
Just because you look at the numbers and what critics say does not make you the source on how this movie was received by regular moviegoers.
And eavesdropping on a few people at the Harkins theatre makes YOU a source? Come on, man. Green Lantern wasn't well liked and very barely made a profit. No two ways around it.

Out of everything you just said, I actually take issue with this the most. Are you seriously suggesting that only Americans opinions matter? Really? Because I went to see that steaming pile at the cinema in Australia. Out of a packed cinema, 4 people up and walked out by the final battle, a guy was literally snoring in front of me and walking out all you could hear was the contempt of the movie goers. I guess I should have taken a trip to the states and gone to see it in an intellectual town like yours, where people actually "got it".
That movie was a flop. Because it sucked.

Yeah you can take issue with the things I say all you'd like. You have the right to do so.
What you can not do is put words in my mouth. Nowhere in any of my posts did I tout american opinions as superior to any opinion from anyone of a different nationality. Like I said BOB did not see the reactions of people from my region or country for that matter. He was speaking to me as if what he said was matter of fact. Just like you only saw how people received the movie in your theater. Maybe I went about making my point in the wrong way.
So I'll type this in a clear and concise manner so you can understand...
THE NEW TURTLES MOVIE IS GOING TO BE A MIKE BAY SH*T SHOW BECAUSE HIS PAST TRASH IS BEING USED AS A FORMULA FOR A SUCCESSFUL REBOOT. PEOPLE ARE GOING TO LIKE IT BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN CONSTANTLY ASSAULTED BY CINEMA OF POOR QUALITY SO MUCH ITS BECOME THE NORM TO LIKE TRASH FILMS.
Get what I'm saying there buddy? Green Lantern now has nothing to do with it.

Actually that quote implies that you had to go to the States to see how people REALLY felt about it. As if to say what BOB and myself have experienced essentially counts for nothing, because we weren't in the States. That is not putting words into your mouth. That is simply stating something that you have written on the internet.
Thanks for the implication of me not understanding and for the "simple explanation" all in capitals, but I understand what you are trying to say just fine.
