In the comic adaptation of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie by Eastman and Laird, there's an interesting scene where Casey Jones is introduced (prior to the park confrontation with Raph) as he is watching television in his apartment.

I always thought it was just a cool addition Eastman and Laird came up with while making the comic version, but recently I checked both novelisations (the one by Dave Morris and the youth version by B.B. Hiller) and the lost Casey introduction is in the both of them.
Now I wonder if this scene was omitted from the screenplay prior to principal photography OR if it was actually shot and ultimately cut from the theatrical version.
In any case- it's truly a shame we didn't get to see it on the silver screen... I'm sure we all would've loved to not only see more of Elias Koteas' Casey but also have a glimpse of of where he lives...
Does anyone have more info about this scene?
Or does any of you know of any photograph material in existence to proof it was actually shot? :teek:
cheers,

Yeah this was filmed and was confirmed. There is many deleted scene pictures but this one was never shown for purposes I don't know.

That comic kept in most of the scenes that the movie left out. I still own it.

casey showing angst against humanity wouldve been dope for sure
This scene is described in the screenplay. It seems that the comics and collector cards all used early drafts of the scripts, and therefore included altered/deleted scenes. Most likely because they had to be made months BEFORE the release of the movie, and thus couldn't wait for the films to be finished/edited.
Anyway, lucky for you I've already been in the process of typing up the script.
INT. CASEY JONES’ APARTMENT – NIGHT
CLOSE ON – A TV SET
and another news report about crime in the city. The channel flips to a movie with a woman SCREAMING in terror, then flips again to a cop show. SIRENS. GUNSHOTS.
CASEY JONES – mid-twenties, shining long black hair, a stern look on his face – watches it all. He’s slumped in an old armchair, lit only by the TV, the walls around him plastered with sports and martial arts posters. Bits of equipment – bats, pads, gloves – are strewn all over. A hockey mask hangs on the wall.
A HYPNOTIC, DRIVING CHANT begins, slowly increasing in volume like a tribal rhythm building to a climax.
THE CAMERA MOVES IN ON CASEY. His stare is intense. His eyes never blink. The light from the television plays off his face as he flips – more crime – flip – the CHANT grows – flip – more violence – click! – AND THE SOUND CUTS OFF, the TV screen goes blank.
And as a white dot tunnels into the center of the screen.

Casey Jones was always my favorite character outside of the 4 turtles. This scene would have given a little more "story" as to why Casey was out beating up thugs. It would have shown how fed up he is with all the crap that gets shoved down our throats via tv shows, news, etc. Would have been great for the movie.

Exactly! It sucks that we don't get to see this important scene..

The few scenes that were cut from the script/film are so short, and poignant, that it really makes no sense they were ever removed at all. Baffling.

The scene sounds cool. But I do think we figured out what Casey was about, just fine.
It's too bad people didn't have that two-hour endurance we have now. Darn near every movie is two hours, these days.

It's not about running time, it's about pace. People tend to put those together, but they aren't really exclusive to each other. The point is, as an editor, you don't want things to be redundant and you don't want to spell out every little thing. And, ultimately, this scene wasn't necessary and would have probably cluttered up the edit. Plus, the removal of the scene makes his entrance later in the film all the better.

I agree with the 'pace' comment. I honestly think leaving the scene in (although we diehards would've preferred it and feel it would've made for some great further character development) would in the editors' eyes, overshadow the macho, brute character Casey is portrayed as in the film... it's like kicking a dead horse. There are already scenes that portray his emotional moral side... like when he confronts the foot and rescues Splinter, or when he rescues them all during the blaze, for example. Casey already has many sides, humorous, heroic, romantic with April, etc. There's no reason to have that scene... Casey has pretty decent character development already.
but again, we all wish it were there, regardless. :twink:

True, it might've messed up the pace somewhat. And yeah, it wasn't exactly necesarry for the movie's plot...
Still, as a big Casey fan, I'd have loved to have seen more of 'im. :twink:
What's curious is that according to this scene- the night we're introduced to Casey is clearly his first night out as a vigilante.
That never crossed my mind. I always envisionned that when we first meet him, he's been doing his stuff for quite a while...
Anyway, it's certainly odd that not one picture ever surfaced of this scene...
Usually deleted scene images pop up somewhere, like on trading cards, in magazine articles, trailers, story books, novels...
Here- zilch...
Hey CanadianTurtle- is it too late to do a new interview with mr. Barron to ask him about this? :trazz:

Pace aside, Casey was flipping through some pretty explicit scenes on tv...
According to Dave Morris' novel adaptation these included "a documentary about terrorist in the Middle East. They had bombed a bus and killed a dozen schoolkids." / "A scene of slaughter in Bolivia- a gangster gunning down his rivals - film of a plane crash - a spy series with a bloody fistfight."
Maybe, pace and irrelevance to the overall plot aside, the suits at New Line and Golden Harvest might've figured their 'children's picture' was already violent and dark enough as it was... :twink:

You misspelled "Irma".

I remember seeing alternate footage of Shredder sharpening his helmet w/my view finder as a child. Maybe there was extra Casey footage as well?

I believe this Casey scene has been shot, as well as an extended fight scene with Raph. And, I'm sure there's little extra nuggets that was shot that we may or may not know about.
I might be wrong, but I recall one edition of Blast From the Past mentioning that a workprint still exists (on VHS) with the deleted/extended footage, without the ADR and voice actors. That's not just the Turtles, but Shredder and Master Tatsu, as well. I can't seem to find the article anymore, though.
I also remember it was once mentioned that there were unused cues for John DuPrez's score, some of which were lightly used for the trailer (probably the opening cues, the second half is a reworking of the final 50 seconds of The Blue Danube). But I could have misheard or have been misinformed. At least on the trailer part.

Wait, I thought the deleted scenes (such as the one with Casey) were only in the black-and-white version of the first movie adaptation? Were they in the prestige color version too, and only absent from the newsstand color version?

We did an interview marathon with Barron and I did ask him about the deleted scenes. There really isn't much that was omitted from the cut and yes you're right it's actually more about the pacing and mood of this film that were the reasons behind the changes. Barron didn't recall many of the scenes that didn't make it, but we did manage to track most of those scenes down in the raw footage. Can't promise that we can show them in the doc though. Will try our best. And yes this scene does exist.

Hey CanadianTurtle!
Awesome that you intercepted the raw deleted scenes. I sure hope we'll be able to see them in the special features of your documentary, certainly the lost Casey scene!
Odd that mr. Barron recalls that there wasn't much cut from the picture. I always thought mrs. Hoag declined to be in the sequel because too many of her scenes were cut out of the first one...
If I'm not mistaken I also remember reading an 1990 interview with either Bobby Herbeck or Todd Langen in which he stated that before the movie opened, he'd seen an early two-hour long cut of the movie...
I should try to find that particular interview again...

I can see that, with the scenes we know are cut, along with the rough, un-paced footage that probably existed in the rough cut. You could probably easily get another 17 to 20 minutes in there, but we're not just talking deleted sequences. We're talking about unused shots, extra snippets of dialogue, awkward pauses at the start and end of every scene, etc.
A two hour workprint isn't so bad. On the commentaries for The Goonies and Gremlins, 3 hour workprint cuts were mentioned.
Can't promise that we can show them in the doc though. Will try our best. And yes this scene does exist.
If not in the doc, are you looking into putting them into the special features? Or is there some kind of crazy licensing issue with using the deleted scenes?

I've seen (as I bet all of you have) the deleted ending where April and Danny ( "Dan" *weird face) try and sell the TMNT to a comic book company. Not as good as the cinematic release ending. But, I would love to see more deleted scenes. As far as I'm concerned there will never be a better TMNT movie than this one.

Basically yes, it is a clearance issue. We are trying our best to include as much exclusive content that has never before been seen in the documentary as we can.
In regards to Judith Hoag's involvement in the second and third films it was not about any cut scenes, there were a great many different issues and reasons behind her not doing those movies. We did ask her that question in our Interview with her last year.
The comments made about the length of the film being affected more by pauses and poor pacing are exactly correct. There really wasn't that many additional scenes totally removed from the film. It was mostly little bits of scenes that were shortened for better pacing and I think made a better film. The only exception to this were of course the closing scene in which we have seen on the German release and one or two short scenes like the Casey scene. That said I was not able to track down all of the raw footage only about two thirds, Probably even less. However I have looked through the entire movies storyboards and captured many of those and there really wasn't that much extra missing

Was the extended "mugging" of April part of the footage you were able to track down? With the darker implications, as the original screenplay and the comic book adaption?

Not that I recall no. I think really the big difference in the "darker" version of the cut where generally using the same footage but simply changing the sound or the way it was cut. But no I did not come across that raw footage, so possibly there way more ya.

The comic book adaption implies at least another few seconds, with an extra line or two from both Sam Rockwell's character and April. I had assumed they snipped those mere seconds and had Sam perform some ADR ("Get the purse! Get the purse!"), which was coyly laced over the shot of them attacking her.
But I could be wrong. I'm just making assumptions based on the screenplay and comic book adaption, as well as the editing of the sequence.

I would LOVE for them to finally put together some bonus features for this movie... behind the scenes, featurettes and deleted/alternate scenes.
Between all the related released products, there are a ton of additional stuff we have never gotten to see.
It's disappointing the movie has received better treatment in it's years. I suppose we're lucky to get the movie on DVD or BluRay and it has been released several times and bundled with the other movies with some sometimes awesome looking boxart but otherwise it's just the movie.
But with Casey, even if this was a deleted scene, as far as introducing a character and the flow of how the movie worked, I think what we got was far better and more engaging than if we saw him watching TV.
Still interesting.
