Just saw this. Words fail me.

Well, its begun. I said we'd be hearing about casting real soon. Some guy called Alan Ritchson is playing Raph. With filming less than a month away the rest of March should be pretty heavy with casting news. This is the article from Deadline Hollywood:

EXCLUSIVE: Now that Paramount and Platinum Dunes has set Megan Fox as the female lead in the Jonathan Liebesman-directed live-action/CGI feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they are working on the turtles. First to be cast: Alan Ritchson, who’ll play Raphael. He’ll be coming off playing Gloss, the deadly dagger-wielding male tribute from District One in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Now, the original movie series put its actors in bulky turtle suits, but this one will be more like the performance capture in Avatar, making this a good role. The TMNT reboot is dated for a May 16, 2014 release after it was pushed back to cut the budget to around $125M.

Motion-capture is the best way to go, IMO. Can't wait to see what the designs are like.

Too slow again. Oh well......

This guy is 6' 2". It’s going to be motion-capture, so Raph is obviously going to be pretty big.

Aquaman is playing Raphael! NIIICCCCEEE! Hope he brings justice to the role and make Raphael his own just like Rob Paulsen, Josh Pais, Sean Astin and Nolan North(among other Raphaels) did.

For those wondering who is this guy,Alan Ritchson was a singer on American Idol, Thad Castle on Blue Mountain State and Aquaman on Smallville(a very cool Aquaman at that and part of the reason why I am a big fan of Smallville).

The only question is which Raphael is he doing: the sullen loner Raphael with anger problems from the comics,2K3, movies and most incarnations of Raphael or the 80s joker Raphael who broke the 4th wall from the 80s cartoon and aborted script.

Bob

I recall that the article from The Hollywood Reporter about Megan Fox being cast said that the Turtles would all be relative unknowns. So I wouldn't expect any big (or even known) names for the Turtles. Just a gut feeling, but I think they may get a veteran to play Splinter.

Well, this guy seems to do primarily athletic roles. I appears they will be casting the same actors for mocap and voice. I guess that's best. They can capture his face and kind of overlay a beak.

Right, the 2012 actors(tied with 1990 movie cast and 2007 movie cast) are the voices I hear when I read the turtle comics now.

Alan Ritchson as Raphael?? He's an ok singer. Didn't make it past the Hollywood round. But he's put out a couple albums. Guess he'll also put a song on the movie soundtrack. At least Alan's cute and I loved him as Aquaman in Smallville.

What difference does it make if he's cute? He's playing an anthropomorphic turtle.

Model-looking people whose faces will be hidden behind a digitally created humanoid turtle. I hardly think you'll be able to tell who’s underneath all that digital “makeup”.

Bob
03-22-2013, 01:52 PM
I know this may sound a bit cynical, but I have a feeling that one of the main reasons why the Turtles will almost definitely be played and voiced by unknowns is down to money and the need to save it. Motion-capture is quite expensive, so a lot of the budget is going to go towards that. If they were to cast four big “names” as the Turtles, even though you’d never be able to “see” them, that would just be a colossal waste of money.

Really? I thought it did.
Just like Gollum looks an awful lot like Sirkis.

Both of those are also good examples of why the turtles might not be as large as their actors.

And yes...I will be mean and judgemental, because if the makers of this BS called a film don't give a crap, then I don't really care to give them a 'benefit of the doubt'...and with Megan Fox, a singer of American Idol, alien-talk, the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning...

Like others have said, the size of the actor doesn't really matter with mo cap.
I've had the chance to do mo cap for a video game and the two characters I've 'played' were almost half my size.
The movement of the actor is just mapped onto the virtual character, bigger or smaller.

Size matters not. :twink:

Anyway, I've only seen Ritchson in Smallville. He was pretty OK as Aquaman. If he's gonna have what it takes to nail the temperamental Raphael... Well, I guess we'll have to find out.

Michael Bay is casting model-looking people for this film. I wonder what Splinter will look like?

The way things are going now... Michael Madsen? John Travolta? Hey, what about Brian Austin Green as Casey Jones? That'll bring a smile on miss Fox' face.
In fact nothing would surprise me anymore.

I don't know any more about motion capture than the average guy. But I have to imagine size would be an issue if that motion-captured character is physically interacting with live characters, like in a fight.
I mean, if you had to lower a guys' shoulders by a foot, that's gonna change the way he'd have to swing his arm punch to hit a man in the face, cause the real guy's height isn't gonna change.

Maybe these turtles are just gonna be big.

EDIT:
If this is the case, and the turtles are as big as this actor, part of me thinks they would cut down on the CGI if they could. Like how parts of Iron Man's suit are real sometimes, for the sake of believability. If it were up to me, and I had 6ft turtles, I'd build a real shells. It would be easier for the interactions, too. Rolls or whatever.
I'm just talking out of my butt, at this point.

Nah Stryker, more like I'm watching this weeks after, for Free, by other means...not pay good money & support a waste of film. So enjoy the Opening Night

And Jennifer Hudson? Sorry, but she (in my opinion) didn't deserve an Oscar for Dreamgirls...yes she can sing...but it's not that much of an acting performance.

Of course, the Oscars have been a joke for a long time anyway.

Sorry Ninjinister and ToTheNines, but I think Aquaman sucks...so feel free to PUNCH away...and I don't care for Smallville. That's just my opinion and not yours. Nothing wrong with that.

And ToTheNines, really? F myself just for having an opinion on Aquaman?

So yes, forgive me if I'd rather have an Actor playing a character that I truly enjoy, who is either:

A: an Unknown that could blow me away or surprise me

B: has better credentials than "Singer for American Idol" and "Aquaman on Smallville" on his resume

As I wasn't familiar with any of his previous work, I pulled up a couple of clips of him as Thad Castle, a dumb jock in some scripted comedy series. I was mildly amused, but it's not really hard to play dumb jock. Also pulled up some clips of him as Aquaman; wasn't that impressed, really. Seemed so stoic that he came across as wooden. Again, I don't know if that's just how he chose to play the character, or if that's how limited his acting range is. It may even be the clip I chose to watch; maybe I'm missing context for that scene.

Wasn't wowed by his speaking voice, either, now that I think about it. Nothing that made me go "oh yeah, THAT'S Raphael!". At any rate, this news gets a shoulder-shrug and a resounding 'meh' from me.

There is no way anyone can judge this by looking at his past work. In casting they may have asked him to speak a certain way. We may not even hear his regular voice when he plays Raph.

I have read this boards for a while and I am pretty sure people always wanted unknowns for these roles. Now all of a sudden people are like meh when someone who is unknown gets the part of Raph.

Exactly. Andy Serkis did the mo-cap for Peter Jackson's King Kong, for crying out loud. A motion capture character can be any size they desire.

Anyhow, not sure how I feel about this casting. On the one hand, the original TMNT film didn't exactly use name actors for the Turtles, either. However, I get the impression that this guy will be both acting and voicing Raph. I'm not sure what kind of voice he'll bring to it. I'll file this one in the "wait and see" category.

He is buff and all... but Wouldn't you expect him to have some sort of Martial Arts background to play the part?

Excellent point. Not sure...

Though I think that most of the fights will be mo capped with actual martial artists. Pretty much like the main Turtle actors in movie one had their fight doubles.

It would, of course, be awesome if they'd choose Turtle actors with martial arts background... Guys like Ray Park, Scott Adkins or Ernie Reyes Jr...

Wait a minute... That's your three missing Turtles right there.

And if their voice isn't fitting pick a voice actor from the past cartoon shows to re-dub it later. :twink:

The standards for you people.

So the people who play the turtles must be unknowns, are the perfect height and weight, Must fit the personality even in their previous work and also have a martial arts background.

Are you joking?

I didn't say anything about known or unknown or about height. I think we've established by now that height is irrelevant.
What I meant is that, when casting actors to physically portray Ninja Turtles, I'd rather go for actors trained in the martial arts then actors with a pretty face. Is that so strange?
I'm not saying they can't be handsome guys. If their good lookin'- that's fine. The most important thing is that they can get the job done.

I was talking earlier about who I would think would be great Turtle performers and I mentioned guys like Ray Park and Scott Adkins... We all know Park's got what it takes from his roles like Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe, Toad in X-Men and Darth Maul in Episode I...
And have a look at this Adkins guy...

Don't you agree that he'd be an awesome Turtle performer?

What we have so far are Fox and Ritchson. Don't get me wrong... I have nothing against them. Well, I have nothing against Ritchson... In fact I think he'd be a perfect He-Man if they ever make that long awaited Masters of the Universe film. He's got the good looks and the muscular body. Perfect He-Man.
Is he a good choice for Raphael? Well, we'll see...

Anyway, I'm not worried about the cast just yet.
But if the next Turtle will be played by Taylor Lautner I'm pulling the alarm bell.

THEN BRING HIM ON!!!

He can be Leonardo.
That way they can print "LAUTNER IS LEONARDO" on the cover of the teenie mags.

I'm withholding judgement until we actually get to see what his Raph is going to be like. As everyone else has said, with all the CG that's going to go into making the Turtles this time, it doesn't really matter how tall the guy is, or how buff he is, or what not. All that's going to matter is if he can act the role well.

And as far as Lautner for a Turtle goes, that wouldn't be the end of the world either. As someone who has (unfortunately) been made to see the Twilight films, and I've also seen his 'Abduction' film, Lautner can actually act. Given material that isn't, you know...Twilight...you'd be amazed at how good he is. Not that he's the best in the world or I'm pulling for him to be someone, far from it, but I wouldn't be throwing my arms up in defeat either.

Jokes aside, even though the narrow minded fanboy in me screams and shouts as soon as a name comes up that isn't 100% perfect in my eyes- it's certainly true that we should give any actor/actress cast the benefit of the doubt..

We should be confident that in the end they didn't pass the casting process by good looks or bankable names alone. They probably got the part because they have proven they could do a good job.
Yes, even Fox.
What they did prior to this doesn't really mean anything. It's not because we haven't seen a certain aspect of an actor's talent that it isn't there...

I quickly forget how outraged I was when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker. Turned out he did an quite an excellent job.

See, the narrow minded fanboy in me tends to forget these things.

Good Lord, that is pretty impressive...
I honestly had no idea that kid was so good at that young age...

With that prowess, he might be a good Donatello indeed. :twink:

Holy moly, Lautner. I knew I was team Jacob for a reason. To be honest though, I don't think his acting is terribly great.

You know what's kinda ironic? In a video I posted about a year ago I joked about the notion of Tom Welling playing Raphael.

wow that was impressive. while i'm not a big fan of Lautner's acting skills, he does have a clear voice with kind of a nerdy quality to it that (allong with his bo staff abilities) would be well suited for Donnie.

I'm a fan of American Idol, and I can't remember Alan at all. What season was he on?

I'm not upset about this at all. I think it's just a wait and see type of thing. I'm not a fan of Smallville, but I'm not going to say that he's going to be horrible.

So you'll spend time finding, downloading, watching and then commenting on a movie you 'don't care' about.

'k.

You got a point.

I was going to post this as a new thread since its a different story in the news, but lately there have been more than a few members who seem a little uptight when it comes to new members posting news here,so i will just post it in this thread and maybe someone who wants to go through 5 pages of random post will be able to enjoy it.

With the production and filming now in full swing on the upcomin live action Ninja Turtles, the Hollywood Reporter recently had the opportunity to chat with Ralpheal(Alan Ritchson), and pick his brain on what fans can expect in the film. One of his points that he wanted to get across to fans was this film will be nothing like what they will be expecting. With a theatrical release date of June 6, 2014, turtle fans will have quite a while to find out for themselves.

"The frustrating thing for me since I've signed on is that you hear that it's already got a reputation, this movie that hasn't come out yet. I think people assume they know what it's going to be about, and those people are wrong. The assumptions, everything you read online is wrong and it's frustrating because you want to tell everybody how great it is, and you can't really say why, but it is. It's so much better than people think and it's going to look way better than anybody can imagine. I can't wait for people to see this. I think it's going to live up to and exceed everybody's boyhood dreams of being a Ninja Turtle. I grew up with it too and I want to see it come to life in the best way possible."

Filming has begun on the reboot for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Hollywood Reporter spoke with the film's Raphael, Alan Ritchson, about what the experience has been like so far.

"We are shooting. It's been an interesting process, this live-action-motion-capture thing. There's just a lot of technology involved so there's some kinks to work out. So we've had some trial runs, we've started shooting some. We're also in this phase right now that is sort of developmental....We're learning a lot of the fight choreography. We've got these unbelievable stunt trainers that work us every day to the bone. It's been a great process. We'll pick back up with principal photography soon."

When asked how fans will react to the movie, Richson had this reply.

I think it's going to live up to and exceed everybody's boyhood dreams of being a Ninja Turtle. I grew up with it too and I want to see it come to life in the best way possible."

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the film stars Megan Fox in the role of April O'Neil, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo. Noel Fisher as Michelangelo, and Will Arnett in an unspecified role. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is targeting a June 6, 2014 release.
