View Full Version : How do you feel that the Turtles rarely jumped across rooftops in the old toon?

In the original series whenever they were out of the sewers they would be zooming around in the Turtle Van or walking around in disguises. The only time you ever see them on rooftops is if they're chasing Shredder on top of a skyscraper or something along those lines.
But they don't jump across rooftops to "get around NYC" like they do in 4kids, Nick, and Mirage.

Totally heart broken, sad, disappointed, angry, OMG that totally ruins the Turtles Franchise for me...NOT. So they didn't jump from roof to roof much, BIG DEAL! Who cares?! If them not jumping across roofs makes you "feel" any anger or discontent then you are taking the OT a little too seriously. Never did I stop & think "gee this cartoon would be way more enjoyable if they hopped across building roofs every episode," when I was a little kid.
For those who would say well that's not like the comic, I think there are a lot bigger issues with much more priority that stray from the Turtles' Mirage source material with the OT than them not jumping from rooftop to rooftop often enough.

They usually used their grappling hooks instead in the 1987 show. Actually, I think the idea of jumping from rooftop to rooftop almost every night sounds totally unrealistic, even in a story with talking turtles skilled in martial arts.

Plus in the OT when they needed to cross the city undetected they just ran in the sewers. Or if they needed to get there fast they used the turtle Van. and of course if they needed the high ground advantage they used the Turtle Blimp.

Keep in mind too how parental groups were making it harder and harder for cartoons to be action packed back in those days. All they needed was for some dumb kid to break his neck attempting to mimick the TMNT or Batman jumping buildings and the censors would have a field day!

I do remember in the show, they would go through alleyways when not transiting on either the Van or the Blimp. Jumping on rooftops or going through the sewers is one way to go undetected but the OT never cared much for stealth. Disguise was perhaps their way of being stealthy. Turtles Forever was the only time I can think of when the OT Turtles stuck to the shadows and attacked from a rooftop. Despite how horribly they were portrayed in that movie.

But they climb inside the elevator in "Take Me to Your Leader". In the "Big Trilogy", Donatello at least tell the children not to climb into the ventilation shaft. (Bebop and Rocksteady in "Casey Jones: Outlaw Hero" tell not to hang on trains.)

plus they climb the outside of the building using only suction cups in "super rocksteady and mighty bebop".

The foot soldiers jumped rooftops near the end of the first episode Turtle Tracks. Then instead of the turtles jumping after them they asked how are they gonna get across? Then Leonardo used a rope and a sword to help them get across.

I think at the time, The Tick did it enough to satisfy my "rooftop jumping heroes" needs.

I have stronger feelings about this being a wack thread than I do about the turtles not doing something ninja-like in a show that 90% slapstick.

Sing it Powder, I feel the same way.
C'mon Cybercubed, is this really threadworthy? ;) You were on a roll with threads about Krang's backstory and discussing the OT episode of "Shredder Triumphant!", but this thread...
...no disrespect or anything...well...it competes with the triviality of your "Can a fire hydrant really blow a person away?" thread.

I never thought about that back in the day because it wasn't a priority for me to really care. The OT was the show that got me hooked on Ninja Turtles in the first place, and it never occurred to me that they should be jumping on rooftops. Now, I don't mind that they do it in other incarnations, but I'm not upset that they don't in the OT.
And I agree that this thread is really kind of pointless, but it's Cybercubed, so what do you really expect?

I'll bite.
Even when they do jump across rooftops, such as the 2k3 series, it's always 10' in the air and 30 yards forward, so it's a joke anyway.

I actually like how the OT sparingly used this technique to provide more variety above (Grappling hook, suction cups, Turtle Blimp, Channel 6 Copter) that makes you expect something different each episode in terms of how the Turtles arrive to activate their mousetraps/attacks. It makes me believe though that the OT Turtles don't have a good jumping ability.

And the "Mean Machines"

Raphael: "-But we're not going down, we're going up!"

I agree with what others have said in this thread. I find it more realistic that the turtles couldn't be able to leap across rooftops in the original cartoon. I actually prefer it to be honest.

Complaining about the Fred Wolf Turtles not being ninja-like enough seems tantamount to standing in front of a tornado and complaining that it's spinning too fast.
