I could see the turtles going back to red bandannas again at some point, however it would be cool if each bandanna had a unique symbol on each tassle. Like a each turtle had a unique Kanji symbol, or something similar to their Utrom tattoos from Vol. 4

I think they should probably keep their rainbow bandannas in the universes in which they have aversions to actually using their weapons in combat (for things other than blocking or smacking around) to reserve that distinction for the only one in which they apparently don't -- the source material.

i actually liked how the new comics went with the bandana colors, it would be interesting to see that brought to a screen some day

They do some proper hack and slash in the Nicktoon
How else could we tell them apart?

Still kind of want them to go without masks more often during "downtime".
Would be neat if they'd go all red for missions they know are going to be particularly violent/important in a comic sometime.

I try not to care one way or the other, but I agree with this. I still mentally associate the red masks with universes that don't need to censor themselves, and the multi-colored masks with ones that do.
It isn't based on anything other than historical context. But consequently even the first four issues of the IDW series seem to have an edge the rest lacks.

I can't see it, the tone hasn't changed at all...

It's not a big deal for me but from reading the black & white comics I've never heard of anyone have any problem. Taking away their weapons (which is always a great visual identifier) the characters have such distinct personalities that you can readily tell who is who from reading the dialogue.
In animation or live action it should be even easier given that each turtle is always given a distinctive voice.
That's not even taking into account the more recent trend of giving them different height, builds, face shapes and other things to seperate them in addition to the old differing shades of green.

Just to clarify, I'm saying it hasn't, but I perceive it that way on some small level because of how ingrained the "red bandanas = adult-oriented, multi-colored = kid-oriented" thing is to me.

I kinda think it makes IDW feel more like the Archie series now. Meaning its for all ages but has a bit more edge than the cartoons. Especially with Krang and some mutants popping up in IDW.

I agree. The IDW Turtles are teetering on being the violent turtles comic we're so desperate for.

Even if Mirage used color-coded bandanas, it would still only be viable to tell them apart via personality. Even the Dark Horse figures were monochrome. Enter Playmates, and everything became in living color so the color-coded seemed to make it feel more alive and detailed. Since that's the predominant image engrained, the "Four Raphaels" like I thought appeared on the first NES game would only satisfy the most hardcore of fans, so outside of a cameo/brief run, the Red Bandana feature remain a distinct Mirage universe feature. At least the current IDW/Nick Foot Soldiers still all wear red bandanas (though in the OT, the Foot Soldiers had yellow foot symbols after being red in the first season).

I don't recall having any problem identifying who is who in the B&W comics. In the absence of weapons on-panel, I found that each turtle posessed distinct facial expressions, manners of speech and body language that enabled me to tell them apart. I think to me that is part of the charm of the Mirage comics.
I would love to see them go All-Red in the Nick toon.
