Not sure if someone already post this already.

http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/175939-will-arnett-joins-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles
"Arrested Development" and "Up All Night" star Will Arnett has signed on to join the cast of the upcoming live-action/CG hybrid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.

Arnett's role is currently being kept a secret, but he joins Megan Fox in the role of April O'Neil, Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Pete Ploszek as Leonardo and Noel Fisher as Michelangelo.

This is the second big upcoming comic book-inspired role for Arnett. He's also set to voice Batman in The LEGO Movie.

To be directed by Jonathan Liebesman, the film features a screenplay by Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco, based on the characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is targeting a June 6, 2014 release.

Wow, this is the first good thing I've heard about the movie in a loooong time. I love Arnett, Arrested Development is one of my all time favorite tv shows.

When I clicked on this thread I was expecting it to be about the Nick show (I know, i didn't look at the category) because the voice actor for April on the Nick toon played Ann, a recurring character on Arrested development. With the filming of a new season of Arrested underway, I figured she may have turned him onto the Turtles.

Here's the original Hollywood Reporter article:

Will Arnett has joined Megan Fox as one of the leads in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, being made by Paramount and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production banner.

Jonathan Liebesman is directing the live-action/CG hybrid take on the classic 1980s characters that debuted in an indie comic before going on to become a massively popular cartoon and merchandising line.

Fox is playing the turtles’ friend April O’Neil. Inhabiting the mo-cap shells are up-and-comers Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher.

Arnett’s role is being kept secret, though still uncast from the Ninja Turtles mythology are Splinter, the turtles' sensei rat, and the villainous and masked Shredder. Arnett is not playing the turtles' human friend Casey, another role that has yet to be cast.

Producing the movie are Bay and his Platinum Dune partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, along with Jason Reed, Galen Walker and Scott Mednick.

The script is by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol).

Paramount has set a June 6, 2014, release for Ninja Turtles.

I find it interesting that they're keeping his role secret. Hmm....it’s almost as though Paramount don't want people to know for some reason. Maybe because it might cause a PR nightmare? I just keep on hearing the name Colonel Schrader in my head. I hope I'm wrong.

I can't really remember much of the leaked script. Is there any other role he could be playing?

I'm guessing he's playing April's over the top wacky boss. But I rather wait and see a trailer or at least a story outline before making a judgement on the movie. After all it seems the Teenage Mutant part of the title is back.

This is the first piece of news that has actually worried me.

NOW I can easily imagine some classic 'Bay Humor' getting in. It's kind of a thing to cast some unfunny actor and just plop him into an action movie so he can do quirky things.

Atleast it's not Ken Jeong.

But I'd rather him serve that purpose than to play some goofy, bumbling Schrader...

It's because I don't think Fox is all that bad and has improved since the first Transformers. She was far from the worst thing in those films too.

Lame comedy though? That always stops these kinds of movies in their tracks. I thought Transformers 3 was alright but the Ken Jeong stuff in the beginning was absolutely awful. Same thing with the weed brownie scene in Transformers 2. It's like it takes a detour from stupid action-town into awkward stupid comedy-town and it doesn't leave for like 20 minutes.

Could he just be playing a news anchor at April's station? I don't think that was a character in the leaked screenplay (which is most likely outdated anyway), but that's a role I can easily see Arnett playing.

I agree. It didn't bother me so much in the first Transformers movie, but the sequels were pretty bad with this. For me, it stopped the films dead in their tracks. I also could have done without the scene where Sam is supposed to be running after his girlfriend because he knows she's in danger, but instead has a lengthy conversation with his parents about love.

chrisdude
04-02-2013, 11:27 PM
Not just the goofy scenes, but the characters, too. They're like, "It's been 20 minutes. We need a laugh. Find somebody and jam him in."

Anthony Anderson played the goofy, 'in over his head' hacker guy from Transformers, who was obviously just jammed-in comedic relief. Then there was the other goofy, 'in over his head' hacker guy who was along for the ride Transformers 2. I don't even know who that was. Then, in Transformers 3, you had Ken Jeong playing the, um... goofy... 'in over his head' hacker guy... :teek:

chrisdude

If he is just some comic relief character, Vernon would be a perfect role to allow him to tag along with April and be scared, like Sam's roommate from Transformers 2. But The Hollywood Reporter (the site that broke the news) said it's a lead role, so that's probably out.

I just don't want a goofball Shredder/Schrader...

He may play Baxter if they're going for the old toon type characters.

Colonel Schrader

Yeah, i can see him as baxter, even as the rat king..

Or maybe there will be like 100's of him, and he is the humanoid krang body, just like the nick show.. He could even talk funny like them. He does have that kinda voice.

Judging by the fact that every actor they announce seems like a bad choice for any role in this movie, I certainly don't think it matters who he plays. Heck, he might as well do the motion capture for all four turtles. I really want this to be a passable movie but my hopes are not high.

At first I thought "Oh crap! Casey Jones?" But one site/report claims he is not playing Casey Jones. So then I thought Baxter Stockman and that kind of makes sense. After that I thought he'd be perfect for Vernon! I hope that's who he's playing but it does say he's a lead character. Vernon could be a lead character if, like someone already suggested, he tags along with April a lot.

I don't think it's official yet but I do hope that April is a t.v. reporter for this new movie. To me it just makes more sense that that would be a reason as to why a human would want to hang around with four mutated turtles in the beginning. April as a reporter would want to so she could break the new story or possibly save lives. By going through that experience she realizes that the turtles are cool and fun to be with. :tgrin:

He doesn't need to be black or white, you don't see Bebop or Rocksteady as humans in the script. Their origins aren't important to the film.

Bob
04-04-2013, 12:23 PM
The original article from the Hollywood Reporter said he’s one of the leads. So he’s not going to be Bebop or Rocksteady. He’s obviously not Splinter. He can’t be a (serious) villain because he’s an actor with a very particular pedigree, unless they’re going out of their way to make the movie completely goofy. Maybe he's some sort of human bad guy who's in league with Krang, all the while serving as the comic relief?

Thats what I was thinking. His voice can have a very low register, and if theyre deciding to not go with a Japanese shredder, then he would certainly fit the colonel role. Though I still doubt his face will be seen much if at all, if he is in fact Schrader.

liugeaux
04-04-2013, 06:41 PM
Yeah the obvious answer is that he's the comic relief, but one of Arnett's best features, is his Alec Baldwinian voice. His voice is dynamic and he can pull off evil really well. His time on 30 Rock and Arrested Development proved that. If he ends up playing Shredder or this Col. Schrader this could actually be a good thing.

Who else could be April's camera man? Presumebly similar extras to the ones that played April's camera operators in the first two live action features.

I actualy think a good route to go down is if he was similar to Mcintyre from the TMNT Adventures series. A rival reporter that tries to prove the turtles are real but something tells me that is not the route they are going to go down.

She's on a trampoline reporting on some sort of fitness thing. Who cares? Sure it's silly but that's what April's reporter job always is.

And the only reason she's on the trampoline is so the movie has a shot of Megan Fox's boobs bouncing.

Old toon April wasn't lacking in the boob department. Those things were practically another character. Of course they are playing them up.

Always? Pretty sure those previous live action features didn't have her reporting on silly human interest stories. She was actualy a full on investigative journalist. As I'm sure you'll recall one or two of those movies were pretty darn popular.

Don't get snippy.

I was more referring to OT April there's always jokes about silly stories and how she wants something better.

It's all to set up the Turtles coming into her life. Also, trampolines are funny.

Seeing everything unfold from Megan Fox to Aliens to this has been one very riveting roller coaster. There's not really much left to do but enjoy the ride I say.

Personally I have nothing against Will Arnet, but it does seem he will fill in that "over the top comic relief" that Bay likes to put in his movies. I feel like i'm in AA where when I first heard about Bay I was all :x, now I'm at the acceptance stage where it's fine and I'll most likely watch the finished product because in the end, I do love me some turtles.

For the record I hated Transformers, but I do hear some good things about Pain & Gain. In the end Bay will probably take my money and win.

It is interesting that he(Bay or whoever's writing this) decided to go adapting the show. How much of the old 80's show is left to be seen, but to get a pretty obscure character like Vernon is pretty epic. He could've been "Random Throwaway character" but they got into the mythology which is pretty cool imo. I think they should just borrow elements from everything that has made the Turtles. I like the twist in the IDW comics where Turtles and Splinter are reincarnated versions of their former selves in feudel Japan making the father son relationship more potent I doubt they would ever use it. Or introduce Hun as Shredders right hand man. I've always loved that character, probably the design more than anything.

Refractive Reflections
05-07-2013, 11:20 PM
Well this an interesting twist. Just when there was speculation of Will Arnett being Colonel Schrader, he's actually playing Vernon Fenwick. There's two ways I could see this: 1) A movie plot similar to the OT since they are using this secondary/tertiary character or 2) Merely using Vernon as comic relief as an nod to the OT.

Will Arnett can pull off the presumptuous, arrogant personality types easily as it seems like a good choice for Vernon.

At least its a relief that the movie is having a bit of a resemblance to one of the reinterpretations of TMNT, instead of it being completely outlandish as some had feared. Of course, there's still a whole lot to wait for before we can say it's good or horrendous...

The bigger issue, to me: People were speculating about Vernon from the gate and it seemed easily dismissable since TPTB said from the moment Arnett was announced that it would be for "a lead." How could Vernon possibly be a lead, right? (even as a kid in love with the Fred Wolf universe and its nuances, I can think of no character I would prefer to see less as a lead) And yet he is, in the production of a producer with carte blanche clout whose last primarily toy-franchise-to-feature-film endeavor shifted the balance from the titular characters to an unfamiliar human cast... there are grim tidings, no matter how you spin it.

Yeah. Just yikes. Vernon, a lead role in the big TMNT reboot movie. If there's a silver lining in any of this, I'm not seeing it.

Leo656
05-08-2013, 03:28 AM
Yeah, I'm honestly pretty stumped how anyone would want Vernon as A LEAD role in any TMNT film, myself. In it a little bit, eh maybe, but taking up huge chunks of cinematic real estate better served showing more actual Ninja Turtle-ness? Ooof.

It could end up like "Green Lantern", with a Hector Hammond who was squeezed in for no real reason and *I guess* did ok with it but took too much time away from the story and characters people actually *wanted* to see, mostly just stopping the movie dead for unfunny "comic relief". That's... not what I want at all...

Ah well. "Wait n see" and all that mess. I guess it's cool they're reaching into the dustbin of "Vintage TMNT Characters" for the movie, but Vernon as a lead role? Naaaaah....

Crabfight
05-08-2013, 09:36 AM
Arnett as Vernon was certainly touted as a lead role previously, but I think that's gotta be relatively speaking. Megan Fox will definitely be THE lead role (love it or hate it), and the turtles will be next in line. But it's kind of hard to market a movie that says "Starring Megan Fox and these guys who are the other leads, but you will never recognize in the actual film!" so they went for the next lead role: the comic relief. I imagine his role will be similar to Anthony Anderson's in the first Transformer's movie: ever present and landing a lot of the "funny lines", but not lead in any sense of the drama/action.

As for this:

I was more referring to OT April there's always jokes about silly stories and how she wants something better.

It's all to set up the Turtles coming into her life.

I agree with you, but this does annoy me. April has occasionally been seen as a reporter stuck with the terrible stories who relies on the turtles for her career, but she's also occasionally been seen as a competent woman who is an asset to the turtles and DOESN'T rely on them for her career. The turtles are the stars, as they should be, but that doesn't mean the movie needs to perpetuate a stereotype of women needing men to get their careers moving. /soapbox

Finally, I'll bet my left shoe that Vernon finds out about April and the turtles and betrays them to whoever the villain is for some silly reason like knocking April out of the way as competition. Anybody?

Edit: I now realize that my first point and my last point totally contradict each other. Whatever. "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines." Amirite?!

Vernon's gotta be a lead. He's too big a name to be playing in the background. Biggest name in the movie, next to Megan Fox.

Unless a more famous actor is revealed, in a role like Casey Jones, Vernon's gonna be in the thick of it all. He may be rolling with April and the turtles, or he may be an antagonist in the way Crabfight predicts, but the Vernon is gonna be a 'lead.' This isn't some veteran cameo.

Ok. This tells me the only thing I need to know at this stage. The leaked script is not the basis for the film. I'm sure this will be a modern take on Vernon and if Nick has taught us anything, the different TMNT universes are blendable. The presence of Vernon does not mean we are looking at a solely OT based film.

My main concerns (alien turtles, leaked script) have been addressed and I am now officially excited about this film.

I think it bears mentioning that Will Arnett has a tendency to play characters that are "important", but not exactly "lead roles"... Hot Rod comes to mind (he's the douchey romantic rival, but is only in the movie maybe twenty minutes or so). Of course, that means nothing, we literally have almost nothing to go on right now.

Oh, and also, of I'm not mistaken, didn't the original press release state that his role was a secret, but it wasn't Casey Jones, and also that at the time they hadn't cast Splinter or Shredder? So... That sounds like Shredder will be in this to me... And I suspect, though I have no real basis for this, is that the Foot soldiers are gonna be ninja in the way that Snake-Eyes is a ninja. They probably will use guns, as well as swords. But that's just a guess.

I think they just suspected there'd be a Shredder and Splinter because they're major characters, and whoever their source was just said "He isn't Casey Jones."

Yup. It means he isn't playing a villain and he has a role that will suit his acting style. Fox isn't being portrayed as a big old piece of sex. I am happier knowing it will be closer to the 80's series than to that leaked script from 2012.

I'll keep saying it - until we KNOW for sure what is going on with the movie, nobody should get too high or low on it. Just about everything is still up in the air right now.

Arnett playing Vernon is a GREAT piece of news mostly because it proves (within a reasonable doubt) that he is not some goofball "Shredder" type villain (Schrader). It's one more bit of proof that the leaked script is either totally trashed or maaaaaaaaajorly re-worked. Either way, it would seem that the movie will be better (story wise) than we all feared not so long ago.

Of course, there may be signs in the future that point to things going badly - but I'm taking this as a good sign for now.

I am very okay with this.

This is actually what I suspected from square one, though the "lead role" description threw me off as well. I'm guessing it was just applied fairly liberally to what will be the main comedy-relief character.

We've known for months that this was going to skew closer to the Fred Wolf version than anything else. It's not my ideal TMNT movie, but you know what? Whatever. As long as they're going that route, this is a solid bit of casting, and Vernon is a salvageable character for pretty much any incarnation, as far as I'm concerned.

Well its not like Arnett is known for sophisticated humour and obviously we are going to get some of Vernon's personality in there but for the most part I agree with this.

However I don't see why we should be quick to assume is this a good thing?

In all likelihood Arnett wasn't cast as Vernon but simply cast as a comic relief character and the writers may have vaguely remembered or looked into the suitable existing characters and went with Vernon as the character that would best "fit" with what they wanted (and to be fair I think it does).

I don't think anyone is really excited about Vernon being in the movie but rather the fact they think that the inclusion of the character people think it will be inspired by the Fred Wolf show and that does excite a certain section of the fanbase. The irony being is that I feel the same line of thinking I feel the creators went with including Vernon I believe also applies to any element of the Fred Wolf show. I think it's fair to hope for Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady but I highly doubt they'll be a modern take on these characters and tropes as much as Bay's own stuff wearing a Fred Wolf show inspired skin.

I'm pretty sure that the target demographic for the movie is not people that are bordering both sides of thirty. If anything we're the nice little earner on top of the real moneymakers in younger people but when it comes down to it I doubt we are people they are going to overly concern themselves with just like with the Transformers and G.I. Joe movies didn't.

If they are shooting for nostalgia then surely they are not going about this in the best way. Seriously Vernon Fenwick? Is this a character that's going to get anyone hyped? Was anyone just dying to see Vernon again? The vast majority of fans that grew up with the '87 show would only vaguely remember him and while I'm sure he has one or two fans (though I've yet to encounter them) even amongst diehard fans he's not someone that is really widely liked or even discussed.

There's little doubt in my mind they wanted Will Arnett in a lead comedy role and that they looked around for suitable characters that could somewhat "fit" (though Vernon was never a lead).

Same with Whoopi Goldberg except there was no character that she could play so they heavily altered one. They didn't want Burne Thompson, they wanted Whoopi.

They want to get fans of the 80s series excited. How about hinting at Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, Slash etc Not the Channel Six News Crew.

They really weren't. Of all of them Irma seemed to be the most standout and remembered and liked by fans that liked the show.

The humor was very witty. All of Vernon's scenes were amusing to the audience and to his dispense.

To me, Irma is the most annoying of the channel 6 crew and I thought fans disliked her the most.

Her name seems to pop up a fair amount in discussion of characters they'd like to see again and the fact that people generaly remember her name would put her ahead of most of the Channel 6 crew.

I think a lot of that is down to the fact that she actualy had a few episodes that were actualy about her or featured her prominently. "Attack of the 50 Foot Irma", "Green With Jealousy", "The Turtle Terminator". "Four Musketurtles" etc

She does seem to have a cult following within the fandom too. Mainly of fans that like to ship romances and the Hentai crowd etc.

April wasn't a reporter in 4kids, of course nobody expected those characters to return. Irma, Vernon and Burne were very popular with OT fans, why do you think the writers used them so much in the first place? They were in almost every episode.

That is another thing fans of the Fred Wolf show moaned about with the 4Kids show. Hypotheticaly if she had been I don't think people would have moaned about the lack of a Channel 6 crew. I cite the fact that no one moans about their absence/replacement in the live action movies as evidence.

The last two seasons of the 87 show gets a lot of flack but it's generaly centered on replacing Shredder and Krang as primary villains, the secondary mutations than the absence of Vernon and co.

I'd argue the fact that these characters were in show so much but not as well remembered as characters like Slash or Leatherhead or The Rat King should be a signal at which characters the movie should focus on.

They were the best source of comedy in the series after the Turtles and villains. Irma and Vernon were always funny and Burne had his charm as a boss.

That's a bit like saying the were the best source of comedy after every other regular characters which could also translate to them being the least funny of all the regulars

Seriously though I'm not objecting to the presence of the Happy Hour News team merely pointing out they shouldn't be given the boosted role the apparently have been given. There's also questionmark on whether these characters will be the movie's focus above the turtles and antogonists.

Also another worry is if this is inspired by the Fred Wolf show and the C6 workers are a big part then will teh the turtles be public knowledge. I think that's one aspect of the show I think most fans would prefer stayed there.

I recall Vernon having a huge fanbase that someone made a fansite to him back in 1997 which was when the OT just went off the air. It was an old Geocities site back when we were in the Next Mutation era.

Do I want to see the Channel 6 news crew return? I don't think they would work without David Wise's brillaint writing, but I don't object it either.

In fact the Nick writers have almost confirmed Irma will be showing up in Season 2 at least.

I thought the Channel 6 crew was the worst part of the OT.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I found the Channel 6 crew in the OT annoying and pointless as well. Burne is ok, I like him. But Vernon and Irma were the worst TMNT supporting characters IMO. Their characters didn't have much of a point in the show.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what Arnett does with the Vernon character.

I enjoyed the Channel 6 crew, they provided some comedic relief for the show and at least displayed that April did have a life outside of the Turtles by showing her workplace and how she managed to help them from a public relations perspective.

The only reason the Channel 6 crew is important, is because April is a main character of the show, and she is the main link (or sometimes the only link) the Turtles have to humanity.

The Channel 6 news crew was implemented effectively in the show without taking too much attention away from the Turtles. I just don't know if it will be as effective, and work as good in this movie.

Channel 6 crews are hilarious. I look forward to them being in action.

Most of Irma an Vernon's scenes in the OT were hilarious. The show wouldn't have been the same without them.

Now THAT I can agree with! I can think of several episodes off the top of my head that would not have been nearly as good/funny without those two. Green With Jealousy, Attack of 50 ft Irma, April Gets In Dutch, Were-Rats From Channel Six, are just a few off the top of my head. I just realized most of those feature Irma mostly, but Vernon had his share of funny moments, too.
