View Full Version : Mikey: Do you like how this show is treating him?

I think out of all the turtles hes getting the short end of the stick. Ontop of that they are making him out to be too stupid for comedy, when in fact we all know hes not really like that. What do you guys think? I thought these guys were fans of the 80s show :-?

I don't really mind. Mikey has been great in this show and he makes me laugh alot. :)
Like I've said before, Mikey may be absent minded at times, but his ability to see the good in people and look past appearances, as well as his general positivity help balance out the team dynamic. I really like that about his character, and it's why he is my favorite turtle.

Wouldn't you like it better if he got more fights or scenes that showed how useful he was to the group? He makes me laugh too though, I thought even the 2003 series showed Mikey in better light thats me I guess :)

Actually I'm quite fine with the way Nick is treating him. He's not as smart as his
brothers, but he's not a complete idiot. Remember the end of episode 17(TCRI) when he swiped that krang data storage device.

I'm not really worried about his feelings since he doesn't exist.
But I think he's adorable in the show. Probably my favorite Mikey next to the first movie.

Well, we all know the turtles aren't real :P
I'm just asking fans how they feel about the character in this series.
Next episode sounds like a good one for him at least :D
Obi your right, forgot about the episode. I hope the show gives him more moments though in the future :D

Though, I do wish they'd give him a power up with his brain, I know hes not this stupidXD

There are other ways of being smart than just having a list of facts stashed in your brain. In conscious terms Mikey might appear to be a dumbass but subconsciously he takes in all the knowledge he needs. I suppose it's a bit like school, teachers don't teach you the subject, they teach you how to pass exams (no offence to any teachers out there - I have a great respect for your profession). Mikey is the opposite of that.
It has been said a few times in relation to this series that Mikey is probably the best Ninja out of all the brothers. His ability to respond to situations without thinking puts him in a higher league.
Also he can see things in others that his brothers cannot.
Personally I love that little dude to bits.

Mikey is awesome. I don't think he's bad at all. He has his moments where he shines, and I love his compassion for others and his desire to want to belong and be friends with people. That's great for his character. At least he's not a stuck up jerk like 2003 Mikey turned out to be.

Michelangelo is a fantastic character. he might not be the smartest of the group but he is as competent fighter as the rest of the turtles, he is quick and have intense fast reflexes. Being tossed away by Shredder, he threw Shuriken at him in retaliation.

Let's not forget he beaten Raph during sparring in the recent episode. Kinda reminds me of Battle Nexus in 2k3 and became champion, he's really a great fighter if he puts his mind to it. I blame his ADHD.

I think all of the turtles are getting good treatments from Nick. They all have individual traits, which is great for character-building. But let's face it, out of all the turtles, Mikey HAD to be updated. 'Cowabunga!', for example, in 2012/2013 probably wouldn't have latched on to anyone watching turtles for the first time. Granted, at times, he could come across as too dumb, but overall, he's become one of the show's stronger points.

As is the case with all the turtles in this show, I think we are looking at a 'younger' version of the Mikey we've known in the past. Previous turtles never really felt like teenagers to me. With Nick, they all feel fifteen.
Mikey has scope for growth and development. I don't think he's dumb at all - just not interested in things which don't appeal to him. In The Alien Agenda he demonstrated he's capable of understanding and retaining scientific explanation. "Building blocks, dude!"
Plus, he is always smiling. I love people who are always smiling. :D

The other day on Nick they had a "Who's more mindless - Mike or Patrick", so that really worries me that the writers really don't understand Mike.
In the FCBD TMNT Animated comic, we get to see a really nice moment that surprises them all, so much that Don exclaims "Mikey, that's brill-" before Raph slaps his mouth shut and says "Never finish that statement!"
Mike's not stupid, never had been, he simply prefers the fun of life over over analyzing and dwelling on stuff. He's the quintessential slacker smart guy - everyone knows he's got the natural ability but he doesn't utilize it.

I hated Nick did that so much. " Fun loving innocent Slacker who doesn't pay attention that much but catches on when the moment is needed" is a way better description. At least Mikey was shown to be smarter than Patrick which makes me feel a little good but not by much. One that was better-"Who was the better master-Master Splinter or the Kung Fu Panda master?"

As for those silly montages, I would like to see a few more like "Who Dances Better? SpongeBob or Michelangelo?" or "Who's a cooler leader? Leonardo or Skipper?" I would absolutely love those ones more. The one with Splinter and Shifu was a good one, so I'd like to see some more but with the other characters.

This version of Mike can definitely ACT mindless sometimes, no doubt about it. I definitely wouldn't call it a trait inherent to the character, but come on, he spilled skin-melting acid on April.
That being said, he DOES have two great qualities that ARE inherent to him. He has great fighting instincts (This was shown when Splinter was trying to teacher Donatello not to think too much when fighting; I forget which episode that was.) and, as has been stated before in this thread, he seems to be very sponge like in his ability to take in skills and concepts, even if he can't retain specifics very well...

Fun fact about the 2k3 and the 2k12 Mikey -- they both seem more impressive when the other turtles are not around.

In "The Christmast Aliens", 2k3 Mikey had a wild ride through town. Fought like a baws and never made jokes.
In "It Came from the Debts", Mikey spoke like a philosopher to Leatherhead.

for me this is the best incarnation of mikey so far. he makes me laugh and he is a genius in naming stuff! he's not dumb as others might think. he's just a free spirit and the youngest at heart among the four brothers. im sure as the show progresses even further, we will see him slowly mature and develop his focus.

In some ways in the latest episodes, Mikey's dumb moments seem intentional; as if he's doing it to get a laugh out of his brothers as opposed to legitimately being dumb. Sharing that sense of humor, I like him even more than I did to begin with.

yeah agreed mikey in the recent episodes hasn't been cracking alot of jokes or pranks compared to the previous episodes, mostly because ever since they fought shredder from the gauntlet and enemy of my enemy and infiltrated the kraang's base (tcri )the show lately seems to be more serious just not like the 2k3 in that way just in the serious kid's show but they do manage to make funny jokes just not alot way if that makes any sense to ya Kendamu.

Definitely! A good example of what I was talking about is in "Karai's Vendetta." Mikey made a joke about not being able to find a bigger fish (to fry). When everyone kinda shook their heads and face palmed over it, he was like, "What? That was a good one!"
If he were legitimately that dense, he wouldn't have acknowledged that it was a joke.

I completely agree with you. I've never really felt like the Turtles were actual teenagers up until the Nick cartoon. Mikey's goofiness and Don being so bashful make them seem like real teenagers. I'm fine with the way Mikey is being treated on the show. I think they've done a great job with all four turtles in making them completely different yet very likeable. The three little kids that I know that watch this show all say that Mikey is their favorite. (He was my favorite too when I was a kid.)

I actually like Mikey alot on the show.
Sometimes I think each version of the TMNT they dumb him down a little, but I've recently rewatched the old 1988 first season and second, and was surprised how they didn't really differentiate them enough. They are all goofy. still great but not how I remembered.
I think the new Nick versions have really gone a long way to giving them their own personalities. like 4kids but a even done a little better in my opinion

I certainly HOPE so! To be honest, this is my LEAST favorite version of him EVER. I loved him in the 2K3 show, even more than I did in the OT series, which is the one that truly made me love him over the others. (Gang's All Here, Michelangelo's Birthday, and What's Michelangelo Good For being some of my fave episodes for him) Granted, it was the movie that got me into them to begin with, and that made me like his personality so much, but seeing some of his other sides in the cartoons is why I STILL consider him my favorite. He got so little screen time in the movie other than funny moments- and most of those were playing off of Donnie- that I wished he'd gotten more development like Raph/Leo did.
This series doesn't give me that same feel for him. Yeah, he's hilariously funny at times, and I like that they kept his sweet nature and generous heart, but that's as far as it goes. Unless they do something to SERIOUSLY make him seem like less of a joke (ie, give him some sort of brain-enhancement or reveal that he actually IS smarter than he acts) then he'll just end up being wall dressing for the others. He's headed for a "one-trick pony" type of depiction if they keep him the way he is- and that's NOT the Mikey I have always loved!

I liked the bit in 'I, Monster' when Splinter says something about 'a great mental force' and Raph says, "Well, that rules out Mikey." Except Mikey says the same thing at the same time and then says Raph is predictable.
Plainly not that dumb if he shows a professional's disdain for poor comedy.

Raphael had the anger management episode and cockroach saga.
Donatello had the do without thinking episode and the Pulverizer (poor Don).

I love they way they are using Mikey in this series. He has always had a big heart and his comedy in this series is brilliant. I mean his comedic timing is spot on. He always knows how to lighten a situation. If anybody thinks they are using him in a bad way they should refer to the original series. I never really noticed when I was a kid but watching it now the Mikey in that series grates on my nerves. I realize he was supposed to be a surfer like character but he says tubuloso and all this other crap way too much. This new series is fantastic I love it.

I've liked Mikey so far in the show. He's refreshing compared to the more-narcissistic Mikey in 2k3. I feel he could be the best ninja out of them all, but, like previously mentioned, he just has some concentration issues. We all know that he may not be the brightest of the bunch, but he certainly is not dumb. He's the one who always tries to lighten the mood and who tries to sidetrack his brothers out of their fighting from time to time.
The series is still quite young. I think I'll have to see a bit more before I can say for certain, but so far I have nothing to complain about. :tsmile:

Well to be honest I think Nick is enlarging some of the turtles´ particularities.. And that´s why Mickey seems even more stupid.. However it is my opinion that despite being goofy he still´s with that sense of discerning between good and bad, much better than his brothers do (like happened with leatherhead for example).. Even when he says random things about something and possibilities he, without realizing, opens his brothers eyes (TCRI episode for example).. He just doesn´t know all the data but he has a superior judgment to what is good or bad if compared to his brothers..
He keeps showing us the fun side of a fight, but he is serious when the situation demands it, like when they were fighting shredder..
There´s only one thing that bothers me on nick TMNT, because in the 2k3 and OT I used to see mickey as the most gifted of his brothers, but not the best fighter because of is lack of self-discipline.. Now I don´t see that much talent on him, maybe it´s my incorrect judgment but I see him more clumsy and not so fast..
Of course the show is just beginning (I hope :tgrin:) so perhaps we should wait more to see his development..

Mikey steals the Nick show easily, he IS the comic relief of the show. Also
lets remember he is the YOUNGEST of the brothers, I think he's a hit with kids and without him this show would heavily be lacking in comedic relief..

At least in the most recent episode he got his due. You know, when he saved his bros not once but twice from becoming wasp food.

I think they're exaggerating Mikey's "dumbness" as a way to provide contrast between the turtles. I don't get from it that he's actually dumb, though - remember his flash of insight about the Kraang planning to terraform Earth? If he were really dumb, he would be getting creamed in battle every time - his instincts, short-term tactical strategy, etc. are obviously intact, because he kicks ass in ways the other guys don't. I take it that's what the comic meant when Splinter said he had the most raw talent of the four.
As to acting dumb, I think it's similar to "drunken master" Kung Fu, i.e. keeping your opponent off-guard by being unpredictable. Useful in combat, good for laughs otherwise.
Poor kid. He's really the omega turtle.
HA! You made me burst out laughing at work.

I don't think he's dumb, but it would be nice if they'd lessen those ignorant moments :T.....
(if you watch the latest clip for the new episode you know what I mean)

Having watched "Parascitica" at last this morning I am concerned that Michelangelo has the reputation of being mentally challenged as a way of putting it. Donatello is the smart one and Michelangelo is the dumb one. Its like the surfer accent and party boy nature of Townsend Coleman's Michelangelo was misunderstood into being not too bright and being the most captured turtle did not help. Then Peter Laird has to force things such as not belieiving Leonardo or Donatello are ones for humor and he wanted to remove Raphael's sarcasm that was so beloved in generation one to make him more focused on anger. Then meant Michelangelo had to be the sole supplier of the humor and it made him dimwited in a big way. He has recovered from being forced to be the comedic relief alone as sohwn in IDW. However, in Nick too much of the 2003 Michelangelo remains within him. Its all rooted in Townsend's Mike being misintrepreted and Peter's enforcment of the humor. That being said it hurts NIck's Michelangelo. He is looked upon as being unintelligent and can only hold uncomplicated thoughts leading not much to e expected of him. I had hoped to see a fun-loving but more serious Mike. No so here as this episode proves.

He seemed more intelligent in the 2003 series I think (where he was in fact more lazy and easily distracted than really "stupid").
But it's wrong to say he's the only funny one of the show. Especially in the Nick show, they are all funny in their own way. Leo with his sci-fi tv serie and obsession with his hero, Raph making fun of others and being sarcastic (as well as angry), Donnie with his reactions with April, etc.
Even in the 2003 series, the funniest for me was Raph with his behavior, and quotes like:
(throws Bishop into a hole)
Don: let's run!
Raph: No, wait!!! (stays) I want to hear him hit the bottom!!
or when there are these aliens that die exploding in a "pop" sound:
Leo: we have to go!! now!!! (run from the aliens)
Raph: But!! I like it when they go "pop".
And a lot of other things, or what he says to Mikey.
Leo: Grrr let's kick their butts!!
Mikey: Hey, you're stealing Raph's line!
Raph: Hehe, I love it when Leo talks tough. We should ask Karai to stab him more often.
