View Full Version : What if TMNT was an Anime?

After watching the Marvel Anime series (X-Men, Wolverine, Iron-Man and Blade)
I had an idea in regards to TMNT. What if they were in anime in a similar style to that? Who would do their voices and what story line would they have?
Personally I think the IDW comic series would be perfect for their anime story line but they have all the right elements for them to be an anime. So fellow Anime lovers who do you think would do the voices and what company should produce it?

It would probably be terrible, like most toyetic anime. April would also have a number of fanservice scenes, even the 16 year old version from the Nicktoon. Already the anime fandom has caught wind of this new April and are calling her, "loli April."
Damn anime fans have to ruin everything.

It probably wouldn't be so bad, and who says April had to be fan service? The anime could be serious, dark and gritty like Rurouni Kenshin is.

Then why is April already coined "loli April" by the anime community? They're already drawing risqué fanart of her and she's only 16.

When Anime is done with a serious hand and clever writing it can be fantastic.
Of course there's a lot of junk out there as well, just as in American media. No need to get up-in-arms about it. I am a fan of Manga & anime. I have seen some wonderful anime, where the animation is rendered beautifully and the themes are just as adult as any well written science fiction/action movie with a decent and thought-provoking plot. I've just started getting into Bleach and it's very good.(both the Manga and the anime version)
I would love to see something dark and gritty done. The IDW story line would make a seriously awesome anime. Especially the flashbacks to feudal Japan when Yoshi looses his wife and then his children...

I'm glad you have the same vision I have. Not to mention they are ninja so that alone makes a great recipe for anime. I'm not trying to be stereotypical or anything but Ninja are from Japan and TMNT has many Japanese elements and if they can make anime out of Marvel then I don't see why TMNT can't be

TMNT is heavily based in Japanese backstory and had color coded heroes fighting with martial arts. That's something anime fans should eat up.

Why are you so focused on the teen April? If they made a dark and gritty version of the turtles for an Anime then April would be based on the her Mirage or possibly 1987 and 2003 appearance not the new Nickelodeon one.

So, is the question here whether you'd like to see a TMNT anime (in which case the answer is no, and we already have it in the form of ultimate hyperbole with the Mutant Turtles episodes), or whether you'd like to see a Turtles show that doesn't have to censor itself, which, with industries as they are, is really only possible with Japanese cartoons? If that's the case, the answer is yes.

I'm not even going to dignify the 'all anime fans are underage girl hungry' insinuation cuz it doesn't even merit a response...
As a big anime fan myself, I've long thought there'd be some really cool stuff they could do with TMNT in anime form. Anime, in general anyway, gets more attention to detail in it's animation than US animation does, so right off the bat the show would probably look fabulous. And then there's the content thing - like Cipher said, anime is pretty much the only way animation can get away with the kind of action and violence that would be required of a real adaptation of one of the comics, so anyone wanting to see a really faithful adaptation of the Mirage material for example - the only way you'd get it would be something like this though.
That said though, it's risky. Mutant Turtles as an example aside, the Marvel anime that were brought up earlier were pretty...hit or miss. The Wolverine one had pretty hideous designs for the lead character and a poor story (at least it's resolution anyway); the X-Men one was meh; Iron Man was a little better but had questionable CGI. The Blade one was the best of the four I think, and while really enjoyable, still wasn't anything to write home about.
So it'd all depend on who was put in charge of it, what kind of work they wanted to do, and all that. The possibilities of a good TMNT anime are high...but there's also the chance it'd turn out pretty bad as well. I'd love to see it happen and see where it all went though.

That could work. I'd be more hoping for Bones (the studio behind both Fullmetal Alchemist series, Soul Eater, and the Cowboy Bebop movie) myself, as they do some of the most consistently awesome animation IMO, and generally do pretty good stories too - but I'm not too sure how likely they'd be to be in the running.
Chances are it'd be Madhouse if anything, the ones doing the Marvel anime.

Hrmmm. Ignoring the quality of those Marvel anime, I've also thought about what another Turtles anime might look like.
First, content. Hrmmm... It would have to do it's own thing, for sure. I liked the Mutant Turtles OVA for being an even more bizarre take on the already goofy OT. It stands out, bastardization be damned.
Second, it has to have a good studio behind it. I love Madhouse... when they're doing their own material. As pointed out earlier, their Marvel adaptations are less than stellar, in animation and quality writing. I know they don't do overseas stuff any more, but a TMS helmed TV series would be a dream.
I'll write more later, gah.

Production I.G. could be interesting. I have to point out that the other ones though are licensees rather than production companies - FUNimation and Manga Entertainment don't make anime, they just bring them over here by licensing them from the Japanese companies that do make shows (such as Toei, Bones, Production I.G., Madhouse, Gonzo, etc.). Same with Geneon - or at least, that's what I would say, but Geneon is now defunct, so they do neither. ^_^;

also girls in general seem to get the short end of the stick in anime.

As for the so-called TMNT "anime" which was OT inspired, it looked kind of weird but the quality wasn't very impressive, at least it was better than the European eps. A proper anime ought to be on the level of shoenen anime such as One Piece.

I love many anime, with Neon Genesis Evangelion as my favourite. However, I'm past the phase where I think of "anime" as a term imbibed with some inherent coolness, as something wild and badass.
So I'm not excited by the idea of an anime adaptation of any of my favourite non-Japanese things. I'd be kinda wary, really: it's often hard for stories to cross cultural boundaries so easily, to be translated flawlessly from one society to another. From what I've heard, the Marvel anime are an example of that very thing.
I mean, anything's possible, I'm just saying the idea doesn't excite me.

I think the OVA fits pretty damn well with the tone of OT anyway, all they did was add a couple characters and powerups and go on vacation. Hell it could probably be canon easy enough, although the OVA / manga / toy comics aren't exactly consistent with themselves so you'd probably need to pick one of them.
Krang is still the funniest part, seems like the OT to me.

I kinda count the Toei animated first Season anime in a round about way. It does seem to have an anime-esque quality.
Like the others on this thread I consider the OVA great stuff. You could easily dubb them with the Fred Wolf cast and pass them as episodes. Sure there's a disconnect with muta stones and Kris Mu but its not a huge leap from some of the things that randomly popped in the OT.

The OVA is great, and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be considered "anime", except if "anime" was incorrectly taken to mean "dark and edgy", which ain't true.
I realize this is what people mean when they ask for a TMNT anime, but it's a narrow view of anime.
In the same vein, I don't think season one of the OT was more anime than the rest. Sure, it was animated by a Japanese studio, but so were many other cartoons in the eighties, and singling out TMNT for this seems more a case of believing that "anime" means "more serious", when there are plenty of lighthearted and goofy anime---like the OVAs :P Otherwise, season one doesn't look, feel, or read like an anime at all.
Of couse, I don't think season one was all that "dark" anyway, so...carry on.

I'd rather have a far-out and wacky turtles anime with Japanese influence (like the original OVA) than a dark one. I'd like to see a mature one before a "dark" one, and by mature I mean dealing with the more philosophical and contemplative nature of some of the Mirage stories. I'd like to see an in-team conflict that is something other than "YEAH WELL I WOULD BE A BETTER LEADER LEONARDO". That, and I'd like to see Shadow actually get to be in anything other than just Mirage someday.
The Nick toon is already influenced by anime, which I don't particularly feel strongly about one way or the other. Personally, I really like American anime (or whatever descriptor has been bestowed upon it) in the style of the Avatar TLA or Korra. I think that would mesh beautifully.

I'd love to see at least an attempt at creating an anime version of TMNT. I once was very skeptical about anime and Japanese media in general, but I changed my mind radically with the years. For example, I love those late 80's Japanese-only Transformers series, such as "Headmasters", "Masterforce" and "Victory", they managed to become my all-time favourite Transformers series, surpassing Sunbow's classic first three seasons. The Japs managed to give some interesting personality and a bit of depth to characters who had none in their American counterparts, and even made a few lame toys (like Transformers Pretenders) damn interesting thanks to their role in the shows.

Give it to Katsuhiro Otomo or Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Otomo might be the better choice, though, since he can handle humor even-handed.

Technically, the first 5 episodes of the Fred wolf series can be classed as an anime, as they were animated by a Japanese company. Can't remember who it was though.

That'd be Toei, the same people who do/did Dragon Ball/Z/GT, One Piece, Digimon, Sailor Moon - and curiously enough, another series that kinda rests on that 'is it anime/is it not' lines, the original Transformers.

I believe that if we're ever going to get a Ninja Turtles cartoon adaptation that's pretty faithful to the Mirage comics, it's going to be made in Japan. Japan takes animation more seriously while most of the world views animation as a kids thing. "Adult" animation is usually comedy shows like The Simpsons or Family Guy.
That being said, I don't think I'd like the idea of a TMNT anime much, no mater how serious it was. TMNT, despite having obvious Japanese elements, is an American creation, so it would feel kinda odd seeing an anime adaptation of it. I like anime and all, but I wasn't even a fan of how anime-like the Ninja Tribunal season felt. I'd be open to the idea if it was a pretty faithful adaptation and if they didn't incorporate typical anime clichés and humor in i(panty shots, etc).

Yeah, because an amine based on an American cartoon couldn't possibly turn out bad. As proven by these gems:

Using outsourced animation to define what country a cartoon belongs to opens up a huge can of worms--there were a lot of American TV cartoons with work outsourced to Japan.
And you only see these questions raised with action series--nobody wants to define Tiny Toon Adventures as "anime" because of its Japanese work, because it doesn't fit this vague notion of "anime" equaling "action series that I like". Which shows the whole problem with this. Either everything with animation from Japan is "anime", or none of it is.
Me, I always say that if the story and characters were conceived and designed in USA, they are American cartoons. That is also true for the Transformers, whose original toy moulds may have come from an assortment of Japanese toylines, but their story and characters were conceived by Marvel Comics. So the Sunbow/Marvel TF cartoon is not anime. There are actual Transformers anime, but this ain't it.

We all made that point, and it's a valid one. Thinking of those things killed my interest, but mine wasn't there to begin with. I like anime, but anime is not just about creating "darker cartoons". There's an entirely different culture behind it, which is why cross-cultural adaptations tend not to fare well.
But I understand that this isn't about what's actually been made, but about a dream of anime's top directors bringing their A-Game to a Turtles adaptation, without any of the pitfalls that are common to real cross-cultural adaptations.

Mostly, I consider what is or isn't anime by where preproduction was done and the original market it was made for. Otherwise, I could make the case Rudolph the Rednosed reindeer was anime too.
My pick for TMNT would be Hiroyuki Takei. I don't think the shaman king anime looks anywhere near as nice as the original art, but in terms of design, fun and themes, I'd be most interested in his version of TMNT.

Anime takes things more seriously than American cartoons. I would have to say if TMNT was like anime, it woulda been a lot like the 2K3 series. But without wussing out.
There would have been less filler episodes. Plot would have been taken more seriously (if you can believe that). Leo would probably have several emotional scenes dealing with his emo-ness during that one season (American cartoons usually rush through these scenes cause hey!! kids wanna see action!!!) and Leo and Raph would have definitely have used their blades the way they were intended. Perhaps they also wouldn't have made that crappy 3-part City at War and dug deep into a real 13 part story since anime allowes for longer storylines. They might have even kept Shredder human and have him beheaded and burned like the comics, who knows.
But yes, probably some pervy jokes here and there and April fanservice (which is something I'd never complain about if she was modeled after the 80's April) and the occassional anime facial reactions and such.

You forgot April and Casey eventually leading to nowhere, since most anime/manga characters never end up getting together in the end.

I think depending on how it's done and who's doing it could be very well done.
I think with an anime adaption it should be presented the way Nick is presenting the current incarnation of Ninja Turtles. Having it be it's own interpretation, but still remaining true to the Ninja Turtles mythos.
It will be largely action based, but with comedic moments. It will also have the turtles having introspective moments where they question who they are as warriors and why they truly fight. And also possible emotional breakdown moments.
I'm thinking somewhere that is as action packed with bleach with less of the goofy moments, but not quite to the point where it reaches Evangelion levels.

I know anime has a huge following and I can respect that, but dear lord, no. Personally it's something I would never watch, but I can see it having a following if done right. That's the issue though, being done right. TMNT is an American thing even if it does use some Eastern philosophy, we have a far different mindset than the Japanese. I think it would blow, but that's just me. I can't really say too much since I can't stand the stuff, but to each his own.

I think there are just people giving possibilities and theories of what it "could" be as a japanese anime. Not what it would be 100% sure. Just ideas, according to what we could see in many animes (not all of them of course).
Theories just for fun ;)
But I agree, there would be a different kind of humor if it was japanese. I think I prefer the american/occidental type of humor for the turtles.
I used to live in Japan. I know their culture is very, very different from ours, and I'm not judging about only what I saw in mangas/animes but also real life, customs... they have a different way to see things, jokes, love stories, etc. It can be good or bad, depending on each one's tastes ^^

I know all anime isn't the same and filled with the cliches of their genre. Look at Record of Lodoss War, the only anime I like. The art is amazing and there isn't a single chibi moment or anything like that. I just don't think they would transfer well.

Oh no worries, it wasn't you specifically I was saying that too - yours was just the latest comment that seemed to have that vibe. So my apologies.:)
It can just get frustrating when it seems like everyone thinks every anime has big over-the-top pervert humor moments, chibis, and that's it. While a lot of anime do have those moments, not all of them do - it'd be like saying all US cartoons are like Looney Tunes or Family Guy or something.
That said, with TMNT being aimed mostly at kids in most incarnations, my worry would be that even an anime would aim at younger kids more than it would older fans, and therefore we wouldn't really get what most are hoping for anyway. I mean, it's my understanding that the OT was the main thing that ever really took off in Japan (not sure if they've gotten the Nick toon yet), and 2K3 bombed there. They may not take too well to a more serious adaptation of the material either.

It wouldn't have to be silly or perverted it would just be all action like Samurai Champloo, Afro Samurai, Devil May Cry, or Rurouni Kenshin. That was the vision I had for a TMNT anime. Rurouni Kenshin does have it silly moments but it was also action packed.

It's fussy, but a middle ground is the best way to go: anime isn't just defined by its cheesiest cliches, and nor is it the sole gateway to "mature" animation where every work is a dark masterpiece. It's got great works, stupid works, and all of that.
And again, I don't think the question is what a TMNT anime in the real world would be like: we've all seen the Super Mutant Turtles OVA, and it sounds like people here want something different.
They want a TMNT anime with no goofy stuff, no cross-cultural baggage, but something along the lines of Ghost in the Shell, Akira, or whatever triggered their interest in anime: animated Turtles without American censorship standards, without capitulation to toy companies, and with Japan's top anime directors bringing their a-game and doing stuff as good as their most famous material.
I love certain anime but I'm kinda jaded regarding the notion of "anime" as an inherently cool, superior thing all together, and don't think the world needs a Mirage-accurate Turtles cartoon when the comics already exist (and their "grittiness" is somewhat overstated with the exception of certain issues). But I understand the appeal of this fantasy

The only way a tmnt anime would work is if they gave it to some anime power-house companies. I would think Madhouse or even Production I.G. I think they could pull off a dark anime easily for it. If you can get a power house company, they could do tmnt more justice than most studios. Luckily Production I.G. does not do fan service. If you want fan service, you watch some kids show.

It could potentially be awesome, but it would come with a lot of stipulations for that to happen.
Remember that the first episode of the original cartoon was animated by Toei animation, who also did the intro theme's animation sequence.
So if it was done in anime style by a traditionally anime studio, I think TMNT would work pretty well. The one thing anime studios tend to trump American animation on is the detail of the animation and scenes.
The stipulation, however, is that it would need to be written with attention to the source material and possibly even by an American writer or with an American director involved in the project. Given entirely to an anime studio could result in the TMNT anime that's already been done which....doesn't work.
The standard anime tropes don't fit the turtles thematically. That's not to say the right team couldn't still do a fantastic job, but I think it would take the right combination of talent to do so.

Quick question: Was there any specific reason why Toei stopped doing the animation for the OT after the first 5 episodes?

Quick question: Was there any specific reason why Toei stopped doing the animation for the OT after the first 5 episodes?
Probably because the series was only intended to be a mini-series at first. Remember back then they had no idea the TMNT cartoon would be a success, it just started off as a 5-episode mini-series.
After it became an ongoing series they needed multiple animation studios for the episodes.
pannoni1
04-06-2014, 01:38 PM
Also Toei was probably more expensive to source to than Korean/Chinese studios, since 13 episodes for the second season was doable for one studio, considering season 2 was animated by just one studio (A-1). Toei isn't really anime; it also animated shows that feel far from anime such as Muppet Babies.
But its easy to imagine if TMNT was a full anime series based on Super Mutants. It would be more bizarre with more mutations and mutants, but it may of had more realistic fighting if it was OT or even Nick-based, Shredder may have been killed off sooner for other enemies that keep coming and going; fewer episodic plots, and basically anything listed under "Anime" in this simple comparison link. And I disagree with younger kids due to the more explicit and graphic violence. Da Vinci himself even made cartoons!

It would be awesome as long as it's just anime in certain aspects like a serious on-going storyline, the Turtles and Foot hacking and slashing each other, hey we can finally see Leo beheading Shredder without wimping out. And of course, I wouldn't mind an adult April shower scene or underwear scene.
Just go with the anime tropes that American cartoons always avoid or censor. Hell they could do a straight up City at War FAITHFUL adaption without the things the US would censor, change or dance around, like Splinter eating rats, the fighting and killing and Shadow.
Just don't overdo it and add overly-done anime tropes like mecha and junk like that.
I would be all for this. If this were true, hopefully we could receive a modern day art style from "Samurai Champloo" than the Japanese Super Turtles series. The voice actors had to be chosen from either Naruto, DBZ, and Samurai Champloo respectively.:twink:

Personally if an anime should be made it should be it's own story. Maybe loosely referencing the other versions. Such as being both action and comedy like the 2012 version. But much closer to anime such as full metal alchemist.
Leo I can see being voice by Nobunaga Shimazaki.
(Haruka Nanase - Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club, Utsutsu Hasegawa-Pupa)
Raph I can see being voice by Hikaru Midorikawa
(Tamahome-Fushigi Yugi, Seto Kaiba-Yugioh, Lancer-Fate Stay night)
Or possibly Mamoru Miyano
(Riku-Kingdom Hearts, Kiba-Wolfs Rain, Light Yagami-Death Note, Shining Armor-MLP Friendship is Magic Japanese Dub, Rin Matsuoka-Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club)
Donnie- I see being voiced either by a female voice actor such as Roma Park
(Ed Elric-Full Metal Alchemist, Toshiro Hitsugaya-Bleach,)
or Magami Ogata
(Kurama-Yu Yu Hakusho, Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus)-Sailor Moon, Shinji Ikari-Neon Genesis Evangelion.)
Or a Male voice actor with a medium-high sounding voice such as Sasaki Nozomu.
(Yusuke Urameshi- Yu Yu Hakusho, Tetsuo-Akira)
Medium voice maybe Seki Tomokazu
(Chichiri-Fushigi Yugi, Kyo Sohma-Fruits Basket)
Mikey-It's a toss up I mean yeah in the 2012 version I can see him sounding like a little kid.
(Think Honey Sempai from Ouran Host Club.)
But I can see him sounding having a much deeper sounding voice, though not as deep as say Leo or Raph. Such as Hiro Yūki.
(Omi-Weiss Kreuz, teenage Dende-DBZ, Cpl. Michel Ninorich-Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team)
Splinter I can see voiced by Koyasu Takehito.
(Aya-Weiss Kreuz, Hotohori-Fushigi Yugi, Zechs Merquise-Gundam Wing)
