View Full Version : Anyone else think Casey Jones has been scraped from the movie?

It seems like the script has undergone heavy rewrites, as the original practically had Casey Jones as the main character.
Now that we know April is a Channel 6 news reporter and that Will Arnett is playing Vernon, it seems like everything associated with April and Casey in the alien script has been scraped.
I think Casey won't be in this movie, and they'll probably save him for a sequel.

Yeah. I'm thinking Vernon has replaced Casey, and April and Vernon will be the ones running around with the turtles, like Sam and Mikaela.
I still don't think they'll do an action movie without a love plot, though. So pucker up, V.

LOL, hopefully not. But I think elements like Casey Jones and Krang will be saved for a sequel so they have "story material" left over.

Its hard to say if they have scrap Casey or not. I personally have not heard if he was or was not going to be in the movie, I pray he is in the movie...at least if not in the first movie if they do a second he will be in it.

He wasn't in the first season of the Nick cartoon, so him missing the first movie isn't a big deal.
I'd rather they do Casey justice rather than just throwing him in there.

If Vernon wasn't being played by the second biggest name attached to the movie, I wouldn't think it a big deal. But considering it, I have to think he's gonna play a big role, so i don't know if there's room for Casey to play a big role. He may be there. Irma may be, too. But I don't see the turtles running around with three or four main characters.
Replacing Casey Jones with Vernon as the male lead just seems like a bad idea.

I can see Burne and Irma just being minor support characters when we see April at Channel 6 at various points in the movie.
Yes. Casey was the main character in the leaked script. We would have heard who is playing him by now. April is clearly now the human lead.

Ok.I see it now. I thought his character would be buried in the past since he didn't give April the human friend bit or romance and Thompson does not need a supporter in his effective role of a Jameson prototype. I assume its just an easter egg and background character. Maybe not but we will see.
As for the topic at hand, I bet Casey Jones still is in the movie. Like I said with Vernon's role. Lets just wait and see. I have learned not to jumpt to conclusions after seeing the media racing to get a story out and missing certain details. Lets get the info then evaluate.

Casey being "scraped" is all good in my books. He was not much of component in the original series. (Not that their basing it off of it, just sayin') I think this hopefully means we can focus more on the Turtles and their personalities. Why not give cameos to the entire Channel 6 news team? Irma, Mr. Thompson. Hell, throw in Carlos Chang O'Brien Gambe as a co-anchor!:P

Yeah. It's looking more and more likely that this movie will be moving forward sans Casey. Now, with Vernon in some sort of lead role, I think we can all comfortably place our expectations in a more reasonable spot.
A movie that is more heavily influenced by the OT may not be some people's ideal, but at least now I can walk into the theater with realistic expectations. Much less chance of being disappointed that way :-)

.......or, even though Arnett is the 2nd "biggest" name he could just be on-screen for 20 or so minutes playing April's camera man. Arnett is a known name, but let's not kid ourselves here - it's not like he's Tom Cruise or George Clooney. He sometimes plays smaller characters in movies.
I think it's safe to say that our initial thoughts about what "is most likely happening" have thus far proven to be complete speculation.

2. Of course I'm speculating. That's why I'm not speaking in absolutes, like I did when they cast Raph, and I said the turtles were gonna be tall. Then I was sure. What I'm saying now just makes sense. And unless an actor comes out who's bigger than Will Arnett, I think he's getting a big, lead role. The turtles actors are in suits, so they don't count, but big actors get big roles. You may not think Will Arnett is that big, but relative to the other names we know, he's huge. Unless it's a cameo, actors don't like to take the backseat to smaller actors. It makes them look like they 'fell off.' It's shooting themselves in the foot.

20 minutes isn't a long time for a big time "lead actor" as you suggest, in my opinion. We obviously disagree on this point. I guess we will find out...I just don't see April's camera man being a big role in this movie.
How do we know the turtles are going to be tall? The actor's playing the turtles actual height really doesn't matter in this case. They can change size and appearance drastically in post production. The guy who played gollum in LOTR is proof of that, as he was much bigger than the character appeared in the final film.

Actually, in the course of a 90 to 120-minute film, a character being featured prominently on-screen for a solid 20 minutes or more is kind of a lot. It seems like less, because in many films the story plays out with *the character* prominently featured, referenced, and "in action" despite being just offscreen (like in a car chase, for example, where you see a car driven by a character BUT not the character/actor themselves), so you're thinking about them even if you don't see them, but if you count the total minutes on-screen of, say, Michael Keaton in "Batman Returns" for an example, you may be surprised how little time he actually gets, despite being referenced in almost every scene.
Just as an example.

Right, it completely depends on the context and how the character is handled. Your example for batman begins is a major gripe among many fans (myself included) - the movie wasn't really about batman, hence he was barely actually in it on screen. So, sure - 20 min can be a lot or a little, and I guess a "lead" character can have little on screen time, but again I just don't see that happening with Vernon. I could definitely be wrong here, but I just don't see that as a character ther writers identified as someone they wanted to put that much focus on.

The turtle actors are 6'4", 6'4", 6'1", and 5'9". Splinter's actor is 4'0". These guys were obviously cast for size. Acting like these turtles even might be short sounds ridiculous, at this point.
Heights can be altered, though fighting human Foot would make it a lot harder. But, as I've said for like two months, there's no point. They could have hired short turtle actors if they wanted to. They did not want to.

It's ridiculous to even speculate with any semblance of affirmation at this point, since all we know is motion capture for the Turtle actors. How do you know the Turtles won't be all CGI while Splinter will be man-in-suit (as Splinter's part might not be as action intensive, likely), for example?
The thing that concerns me about the motion capture thing is... how it that supposed to work in a full-on ninjitsu fight with Shredder or non-CGI Foot Soldiers? Does the Shredder actor and the Foot actors just pretend they're getting hit and deliver kicks and punches to invisible opponents or tennis balls held off-camera (CGI Turtles to be added later)? How it that supposed to look real?
It works fine when it's CGI characters interacting with other CGI characters (re: The Avengers)... but when you start trying to Roger Rabbit marry CGI characters with live action characters -- in what we're told is supposed to be The Raid-level fights -- I think it may get kinda rough.
The previously mentioned hybrid route (men in suits, with CGI assists) always seemed the soundest to me.

If you mocap a 6'4" guy punching a 5'9" guy in the face, then shrink that 6'4" down to 5'4", and the motion will be wrong. Then what? Digitally alter every fighting motion? These aren't special actors like that would justify the work or the money, and these aren't characters of inhuman height. Right. But where did you read that they're doing mo-cap with the actors... for the fights?
If they're not building suits, there's no reason they wouldn't use professionally trained fighters to stand in for the Turtle actors to go ahead and mo-cap them instead.
Jester
05-09-2013, 01:25 AM
Which will likely be the case. They will probably have 2 sets of Turtles, much like the 1st movie: The acting Turtles made up of the actors in mo-cap, and the "hero" Turtles, trained stunt doubles in mo-cap.

I don't doubt they'll have stunt doubles for some stuff. And professional fighters wouldn't be a surprise, either. Mikey's actor has tweeted about hurting himself with nunchuck a couple times...
But the thing is that they hired big dudes. Leo, Raph and Donnie are well over average height, Raph and Leo are built like football players, Donnie's actor is tall and lanky. tje exception is the 5'9" Michelangelo, and he tends to be considered the youngest anyway. That'd be one heck of a coincidence.
I'm not bothered by the idea of tall turtles. But If I has hoping for short ones, I would've lost hope by now.

In battle? Or just twirling it around, perhaps even mid-run, as would probably be required even in non-battle situations? He didn't go into that much detail. I just know that he hit himself in the nuts one day, and in the eye another.
If they have professional martial artists mocap the fights, then of course that would solve that issue. But it still wouldn't explain the amazing coincidence that three of the turtle actors are over 6', and that Splinter's actor is 4'.
Ever since Raph was cast, people have been explaining how the turtles could still be short. I don't see any reason to think they will. The casting choices mean that short turtles would take extra work and money. And even if you don't think it would be a lot of work and money, it would still be unnecessary, because they didn't have to cast big guys.
I feel like I'm the only person who's not hoping and crossing fingers.

Again, watch the video I just posted above. They do this all the time in movies with mocap. The actor's size doesn't matter!! They can make things appear larger or smaller as they see fit and do it all the time. Geesh. It only makes sense that they hired these actors who they felt were best equipped to emote each characters body language, essecnce, etc. Highly doubtful that their height ws a driving factor. You could be right, but there is no evidence to support that these guys are going to be 6' plus turtles anymore than there is to say they will be 4'.
I personally don't really care if they are 4', 5' or 6'...(I would probably be bothered if they were giant 7' plus turtles, however). I just don't think there is any real reason to have come to a conclusion at this point about how they are going to handle this specific thing.

Never said it was news. And, actually, in this case they HAVE TO DO IT. They are using mo-cap, so the entire performance for each turtle will be done very much in this way.But they'll be fighting human characters who already have heights. We've seen the Foot. Andrew and I have both pointed out that this presents problems.
What I'm saying, is that I don't see the ends that justify the means. What is special about these actors? They aren't John Rhys-Davies. They aren't Andy Serkis. These aren't especially talented martial artists. And ninja turtles have never been tinier than a human, or larger than a human, like Gollum, the Hulk, or a hobbit, or anything like that.
Why wouldn't they hire short actors, if they wanted short turtles?
Can you give me a reason why they would give themselves any minute amount of extra work and extra money on resizing these characters, making the turtles appear shorter as they interact with people and environments, and working beyond the typical demands of mocap?
Can you speculate as to a reason why these actors are so tall?
Because I'm just working with what I see. I'm basing this entirely on observation, not technological possibilities. I see unusually tall actors being cast as these turtles. I'm 6'4". I know how few people are my height. You pick four guys, disregarding their height, and this would almost never happen by chance. This is what I see.
It's speculation. I'm confident enough to say I'm sure these turtles will be tall. But at least that's based on a real pattern of events, hiring these actors.
To say, "Oh these giant dudes don't matter. That pattern doesn't mean anything. They can make them look shorter." That's assuming:
1. These actors weren't chosen for their heights. That it's just a giant coincidence.
2. There is some reason why Leibsman and Bay would want to make these turtles short.
At least my prediction doesn't require imagination.

They aren't "giant" dudes....if they hired pro wrestlers, then yeah, I could see that there was an obvious reason they hired guys with that kind of build. The actors hired here are nothing special physically, that I can see. Dudes up to 6'2" are not abnormally large looking (I'm 6'1" and see plenty of guys taller than me every single day when I walk down the street).
The actors hired are:
6'2"
5'9"
6'4"
6'1"
Other than the guy playing Donatello, these are not "huge" guys. Even then, the Donatello casting is probably more in line with the way the characters are being portrayed in the Nick cartoon (taller/skinnier that the others) - which only makes sense, because Nick is probably requesting that some of the characteristics / uniqueness of each turtle be represented in the movie. I've said it before - if height was a requirement here, they probably did it to how they want each of the TMNT to scale compared with each other (Donnie the tallest, Mikey the shortest) - not because that is exactly how tall they will appear on-screen.
Regardless, you think what you want and I'll think what I want. My thoughts don't require "imagination". Things are manipulated - A LOT - in post production, ESPECIALLY on a heavy CG movie such as this. I'm pretty sure it's not going to be costing them a ton of "extra money" as you speculate, to play with their sizes/dimensions. If you know anything about mocap (and I'm no expert, but I do know the following to be true), the actors are controlling digital puppets, that can be any size they want them to be/appear. In that regard, those are probably already done and could be controlled by anyone, regardless of size. You are coming to conclusions based on what you see, as am I - except I'm not really coming to "conclusions" - anything is possible and I'm open to that, while you come off as your opinion on the matter is the definitive one.
All I'm saying is that, no matter how much you try to defend your thought process, you don't know anymore than anyone else. Just like you were so confident (based on the info "we had") that the original leaked script was certain to be used....look where that got you. Nothing so far has shown that script to be the one they are using. Just sayin.
<edit> based on the new turtles on the set pic, it looks like the turtles are handcuffed and in the custody of the "foot" (if that's what these guys are). With that said, maybe this is proof that part of the leaked script is still alive? Ugh. Not a lot to go on at the moment.

Maybe they'll be tall, maybe they'll be short... But why are we presuming they were picked for their heightsx and not for their acting ability? I mean, I doubt they'll bother resizing them too, but still, to say they were only cast for their height is a little insulting. Im sure no one here meant it that way, I've just encountered a lot of discriminatory language after the casting of splinter, and I've been on edge about that
Not in the games aynway. And OT.He was in the newer games. I know he was a more minor character, in the OT that's why I said "almost". Regardless he still appears in almost every incarnation in one way or another, and he is still a lot more important than freaking Vernon.

1. We've all enjoyed speculated and came up erong. The only thing I've said I was sure about is this.
2. Raph and Donnie are both 6'4". Leo is 6'1", Mikey 5'9". None of them are 6'2".

I never said only. I just said its too big of a coincidence not to have been a factor.

I hope Casey jones isn't in it. To be honest he's over used and this reboot don't need him. I rather see the turtles story rather then Casey jones being added to it. Never really a big Casey jones fan to begin wit

I love how Vernon takes more precedent than Casey in this movie. I certainly find him more interesting.
I don't mind if Casey doesn't appear at all in this movie series.

Not in the games aynway. And OT.
For a character that made so few appearances on the OT he certainly left a huge impression on fans of that show.
It could be he stood out because he was featured prominently in the first movie but he's certainly better remembered than Vernon Fenwick.
I can't wait for the sequel which will feature Howie, Irma's musician boyfriend.

He could be to some people but not to me. I don't mind him not existing at all.
