View Full Version : Official Episode Discussion #22: "Parasitica"

Well, I have no idea which one's going to air first, and since it's all out of order and being shown at crazy different times... we might we well get Both Episodes ready!

It seems Snakeweed isn't the only arthropod trudging through the ooze. Now we have what wounds like some crazy giant wasp terrorizing the city. Hopefully it's something fairly small, as opposed to something HUGE like a GITS Jigabachi Assault Copter.

A lil sting, a lil mind control... you would think after all the times Mike is the one chased by bad guys, that he'd be the first to get nailed. Looks like he's gonna have to actually use his head and stop his brothers before they're completely lost to whatever attacked them.

More to come..!

~ ~ ~ ~

Update 2: Sorry folks, no new show... they had 'Pulverizer Returns' on instead.. :(

Update: Well, it looks as though the US may not be getting this episode first, after all. TV schedules are showing that this episode will be seen first in Europe. This may all change in the next 24 hours, so let's all share the salt, shall we? And, there is word spreading that there are going to be people live-streaming the episode for those who cannot see it. Running time is a Wee bit early here in the US and anyone in the western hemisphere... 1:30am Pacific time, 4:30am Eastern Standard Time. So if you wanna be up with the chickens, bring them to watch the show, and then stop in here and check on the conversation.

Decent filler episode. Was fun but nothing that memorable.

It had some gross/creepy themes which was neat, but mostly I agree... a mutant wasp just isn't a very compelling adversary for the turtles, especially as portrayed. The episode could have really been improved if they'd cut to april and splinter once or twice to break up the wasp stuff a little bit. Give us a little character building instead of making it a total isolated episode.

I know they write episodes like this a lot because they can reair it anytime and it won't feel out of place, but we already have other episodes like that (for example the Rat King ep) that have done it way better.

It's fine but I think this might be my least favorite episode so far. I'm appreciating Turtle Temper a bit more after seeing it, which I'd previously felt was one of the weakest episodes.

Teddy
06-23-2013, 05:45 AM
A little creepy with the turtle-wasp-zombies, but other than that...kind of a let down. Absolutely nothing to do with anything going on in the series, except that the mutant wasps were created by the Kraang, of course. But no actual Kraang in the episode, or further story development. This was what everyone was expecting though, just a filler episode. Just sucks we had to wait so long to see it.

Also, major cop out having April and Splinter "away at training" for the entire episode. Since when does Splinter ever leave the lair? Oh wait, when the entire episode takes place in the lair and it's easier to not write him in at all. That makes sense. :tdead:

okay, with most of our before made comments apparently gone and so much whining already I have to leave some stuff here what I felt about the episode.
I really enjoyed it!!that played entirely(well, apart from the very beginning of course) in the lair was great in my oppinion..it only added to the creepy atmosphere that found its way in pretty soon..it was also a michelangelo centered episode and that is surely a rocketlauncher in my book!;)
splinter and april being outside on ninja training could actually just mean as well that they are someplace else in the huge subterrainian field of the sewers, not necessarily topside..although I had assumed this all along(them being topside)..if they were topside, hey-thats incredible, splinter back with the humans?!?!?kicks off imagination...
their demon voices freaked me out which I really liked;)...the fighting choreography was pretty decent, too...especially some of the observational angles took us right into the action and this I love about the show, its when they use the camera(you can do this in cgi environment of course) and swirl it around to play with space....mikes lines were mucho fun.
don using a pimp slap several times?hahahah that was brilliant!
mike rubbing leo s space heroes comic on his butt(shell)?!?!?!hahahahaha
and that comic looked really nice!..I loved the return of space heroes tv show of course;)the alien licking cpt I dont know his name again was groce;)
oh, wanted to comment on the wasps:to me it looked like the kraang did not INVENT or CREATE those huge wasps, what they did was more like tinkering with the 'formula'..mutating their growth somehow..
THIS I think plays out in regards to the huge size kraang prime character which we'll be about to see....so, no relevance for the whole story is not an option in my point of view(that may count for all episodes so far)
one last comment:still find 'turtle temper' among my absolute favourites of this show, I cant understand peoples whines about that.
booyakashaaaa!

The ep was great! I loved the zombie theme. My only complaint would be that we didn't get an explanation as to why april didn't show up in pulverizer returns (chronologically parasitica takes place before that ep). Splinter just casually not being in the lair also didn't sit well with me, but considering that he is the rat equivalent of superman and the master from karate kid, it made sense that he wasn't there. I'm starting to think that maybe they made him a bit too badass. Another thing that I noticed was that, in truth, donnie was the one who actually bailed them out... again. I wonder when the 'donnie is out, wtf do we do now?' ep is due.

Finally, I wanna comment on what's probably one of the greatest scenes of the series so far, which is when, at the end of the ep, Leo goes all big brother on mickey and confronts him about using his favorite comic book as toilet paper. That was just so great! They really managed to pull that 'older brother taking revenge on the little one' feel off ^^

PS: I think that after this ep, the butt wiggling quota of this season has been met

I agree. That had to be the worst part about the episode. At the very list they come up with a reason why she was not there.Unlike in the last one.Plus who nows. There is one more episode before the one hour final. So maybe it's about them and there training......I can dream.

That was a surprisingly good episode. I quite enjoyed this one. The ending felt a bit weak and unsatisfying, but that's a feeling I often have with this series. The first 2/3 of the episode was solid though.

One issue I have though that at times they overdo showcasing the "problem" in an episode, something they also did for example with the A and B team in the episode with the Mousers. A little bit more subtlety about Mikey being "useless" would have been better.

It's interesting that Leo seemed aware of the things that happened around him even when under the effect of the wasp. Unless someone else told him about Mikey and his favorite comic book.

And maybe it's just me, but the art and animation felt especially clean and smooth this episode. They also did a great job with the facial expressions in this one.

It's funny because that's the only scene where he is not wearing it. What's even funnier is that the half of the belt that goes around his back is still rendered in that scene (it can be seen right before he turns around), so it seems like the belt is glued to his shell xD

It'd been really nice if he had gone to destroy the egg not wearing his usual attire. It was the middle of the night afterall, and I doubt those knee pads are comfortable to sleep with.

'Pete' and Spider-Bytez too

Hope that gets an explanation. I am guessing its like the giant dandelions thing from Secret of the Ooze. It's likely neither those or the wasps had human conact to become anthropomorphic.

'Pete' must have been a pet carrier pigeon or something. Maybe something to do with April's dad.

This episode had a lot of padding. It really could have used a B plot of seeing Splinter train April on a rooftop somewhere.

I think that's the reason I didn't like the episode as much as I should have, too much of it was focused on the same thing and it needed a secondary subplot.

Great Mike Episode! I think we needed one last character-centric filler Episode before the (hopefully) hard-hitting epic last 3 Episodes of Season 1.

But on its own, it's still a great episode. Reminded me a lot of a zombie flick actually, with an awesome survivor horror feel that raised the tensions as the episode went on. I like the way they handled Mikes smart side, he's still the same but it shows a lot of depth and honor towards his character.

Overall, great episode. "I'm a Heeerroooooo!" (8.5/10) for 'Parasitica'. Can't wait for the Season Finale! :)

Yeah I did expect a proper three on one duel between Mikey and the others towards the end. Bit too much running around screaming from Mikey and Donnie. They might not be as powerful as their big brothers but Splinter would still expect them to put up more of a fight.

That being said the fight between Raph and Leo was brilliant. Well thought out and animated.

I especially loved the slow mo at the end when Mikey fires the shellraiser cannons.

For some reason Rob Paulsen really stands out for me this episode in terms of voice. Everything he says as Donnie just seems to nail it.

I agree. a final duel where Mikey would (for example) use his speed and agility to give the antidote to every one of his brothers would have been pretty cool and a good satisfying ending. I found the final wasp fight anti-climactic, but the slow mo at the end was pretty nice.

Absolutely, the fight between Raph and Leo was really well done, I guess that was why I also was hoping for one more near the end.

There's only so much you can do with 20 minutes. Maybe 30 minutes would have been better, and would have allowed for the subplot of April and Splinter training Cubed? Although I can't vouch for the attention span of kids these days!

I totally agree, I feel like the show missed a BIG opportunity to show how Mikey is just as strong as his brothers. A fight between Mikey & his 3 brothers would've been epic esp. with the episode's official description:
"Michelangelo must fight his brothers when they fall under the control of a pure evil parasitic wasp." I felt let down with the way it ended :tsad:

I've yet to see the episode, though I can't say I'm surprised that many feel Mikey's final showdown with his bros wasn't as awesome as whatever confrontation Leo and Raph had. At this point I think it's pretty clear Nick regards Leo and Raph as being the only ones who can really physically duke it out when things start to get intense, and even in an episode based around Michelangelo it sounds like that's not enough to give him a chance to really prove himself.

Very creepy, you can tell Ciro is really a fan of horror movies :tsmile: I love eps like these so called "filler episodes" They my not move the overall story along, but I think they can be some of the most funny and entertaining episodes, which is the main reason I watch anything Ninja Turtles.

I'm holding out for season 2 >:)

they BETTER not do that to my favorite turtle >:U

....I kinda hate it when stuff becomes Leo and Raph only.....>:u....

but again I'm sure Mikey will prove himself season2 :3 he's proved himself worthy numerous times this season...it's just his bros don't take notice..

I finally got around to watching this episode and I really enjoyed out. IMO this is the second best "filler" episode after I, Monster. I agree with everyone else that said that this episode could use a B-plot. I would love just a few minutes of Splinter and April training or Donnie experimenting on Timothy or the Kraang or something. A B-plot would have changed this filler episode into something that would actually help advance the plot.

Few extra things:

Space Heroes was HILARIOUS. That kiss with Captain Ryan was too much.
Once again, Space Heroes foreshadowed what would happen in the episode. I think that's its purpose.
I noticed that once Leo, Raph, and Donnie were infected, they stopped calling each other by their nicknames. Subtle things make this show more awesome.
Did Donnie steal that centrifuge?
I always look forward to Raph v. Leo fights, and this one was no exception. Anyone notice that although Raph turned his sai around so he wouldn't actually stab Leo, Leo went at him blade first? Leo wanted to kill him!
Mikey really wants to be a leader but no one takes him seriously. It's adorable.
I'm surprised at how gross this show is willing to get. While those wasps were nowhere near as gross as that cockroach (ugh), it still got a bit icky at some points.
Mute mutants are boring.

I loved this episode, but I really wish they would start giving Mikey a little more credit. He's kinda turned into the stupid turtle that is worthless, and can't fend for himself at all. Go watch the classic series when he teams up with Bugman or when he saves the other three in "What's Michelangelo Good For?' and you will see the Mikey that I think they should be portraying.

I actually really enjoyed the episode with my daughter. It had nothing to do with the core story of the Kraang and all that but so what? It was actually pretty haunting and chilling on a few different levels... that the mutant wasp actually died on-camera (and then baby wasps went blooie later?), and that we got like a zombie-infected Turtle tale, Turtle against Turtle. The whole affair seemed surprisingly ballsy for a children's cartoon... the mileage they got out of it impressed me.

Kinda riveting, in its own way. Solid writing, and executed well.

This was written by a Pete Goldfinger, who hasn't been on the show yet and probably won't have any episodes the rest of this season. Definitely welcome back though. Anyone else feel like there were a bunch of visual references to the 2007 movie?

The episode was a good "isolated" episode in itself, but as some said earlier it would have been nice if there was a minute or two of the episode advancing the series. For example, Splinter teaching April about defending herself better from Karai, or trying to figure out how these wasps could be utilized by the Kraang. But, eh... whatever.

I'm glad they had an episode where it demonstrated that Michelangelo was competent under pressure. ...So I'm assuming because of Michelangelo's spacy behavior and hyperactivity, that the venom didn't effect him as powerfully? lol...okay.

I knew when Leo got infected and defensive over the wasp egg, and how Raph wanted it destroyed, that it was foreshadowing a brutal brother vs. brother fight. ;) An excuse to always get some Leo vs. Raph drama fighting that some fans here seem to like. :P

The only part I thought was eerily haunting was when the viewpoint pulled away from Leo and you could see his painful, mental agony which magnified his tortured isolation. Otherwise, eh... the rest of the episode wasn't as "creepy" or "ballsy" as others had said here. The Turtles destroyed other arthropods before (i.e. Raph destroying the cockroach in "Cockroach Terminator") and fought/practiced many times before, so it's not like the episode ventured into anything new in terms of carnage. The only difference was just the eeriness of mind control upon the brothers (it happened already with Splinter in "I, Monster" [the Rat King episode]), and that's a good story writing step, but nothing monumental.

The only part I thought that pushed the envelope too much was the "Space Heroes" episode with the "How about some sugar" line. It was funny, but maybe the "tongue action" was a bit too much.

Mixed feelings on this one. First off, I always love it when Mikey "saves the day" all by himself- even though Donnie DID do most of the work on the cure. But Mikey actually had some great ideas of his own, and came through in the end. An that Space Heroes ep was hilarious! (Am I the only one who caught the Army of Darkness reference there? That was Bruce Campbell's line in that movie!) My only real beef here was the ending, like most have said. The wasps (pl?! WTF?!) were defeated too easily, and it seemed like the cure worked a bit too fast. IMHO, of course. But, good ep anyway! I hope he gets more like this!

No, but I don't see the difference. We're not in the 90's anymore, technology has advanced and there's plenty more opportunity to watch shows online especially legally.

Of course this episode isn't up legally though, so if you don't like going to seedy streaming websites than there's that too.

I'm still a bit confused as to whether the bug in question is a bee or wasp.

Defo looks more like a wasp (I'm guessing even mutant bees are a bit more fuzzy wuzzy) but it dies when it loses its stinger in Leo? I thought that didn't happen to wasps and that's why everyone hates them more than bees?

Talk about bees/wasp, I got stung by my neck today near a flower bush! Coincidence much?? I just watched this episode yesterday!

The pain is excruciating. I really don't know what to do but after a quick google I do. I tried to dig out the stinger from under my skin but couldn't find it. Maybe it fell out? Apparently the bee/wasp went limp after attacking me so I stomp on the little bastard.

A bit of medication and after that I'm gonna run it under cold water. What a damper on my vacation.

Going to a clinic soon. Maybe there's a Donnie like doctor there.. huh I'm talking crazy. Getting drowsy.

Got stung several times before. As long as you get the stinger the pain goes away throughout the day. As for new episodes coming out will it include this one? Watched this a couple of days ago and thought it was ok. Nothing terribly thrilling or interesting, but fun nonetheless. I liked how Mikey was able to keep himself focused for a good 15 minutes in order to finish what Donnie started, even if he did almost pass out 19 times, lol. I really enjoyed that scene. But I also liked the Raph vs Leo fight scene - it's weird seeing them fight each other for reasons other than the typical Raph/Leo sibling rivalry (or practice, of course).

I will say, though, that the designers/animators REALLY should have put a bit more thought into that stinger! Holy cow, that thing was not only huge, but hooked! Leo's arm would have been way worse off then that red bump they gave him. I realize they wanted it to look menacing/painful, but that was to the point where it was so long, the tip should have been coming out the other side of his arm (or it sure looked that way, anyway). That's a relatively small nitpick for the episode, though.

I felt that this was inspired after watching Ghostbusters, Alien, and Lord of the Rings. I don't know. Leo was pretty Gollum on that egg. I think it would have been funny if he said, "The precious must be ours.":tlol: But when Raph and Leo were both fighting Don and Mike, all I could think about were the terror dogs Zuul and Vinz Clortho from Ghostbusters. I didn't see anything in the rules about posting links to view episodes, but only for downloading. Does that mean that ANY independent cartoon/anime watching sites are illegal? I'm a little confused on what constitutes an illegal link. Again- sorry about that.

That's alright... :) We can't have provide any links either for viewing or downloading. *shrug* We've got some Viacom enforcer types keeping an eye on the forums. Same thing happened with the 2K3 series.

Does that mean to actually legit streaming, like if Nick put it up on their own site? Just curious, since I would assume in that case it'd be all right.

Actually, if you're able to post the embedded videos directly from the links Nick offers on their site, that's allowable. :)

I'd asked Krang about it, and he created some code similar to the youtube one's that we use. It takes some finagling to get the video numbers right, though... and some video's just will not embed at ALL. So it's a challenge..

I watched this online about a week ago, and there was a good reason why this perhaps was delayed in America- just too much filler, despite having good moments for Michelangelo. Even though the Krang, Splinter, and April are briefly mentioned, its basically one long "solve the insects problem in 30 minutes" episode with cliche after cliche; what's the source behind the insects' mutations/powers? It makes The Cockroach Terminator seem like Gauntlet. At least in the OT episode "Big Bug Blunder", Shredder and Krang hilariously discuss how it works along with showing its source. Its not going to hurt the show in the long run just yet, but I hope that in these Dog Days of Summer that Nick would do a better job of showing everyone the potential that this Season will conclude.

Rating: 4/10.

Yeah, it was. I don't have too much of a problem with people mispronouncing Japanese most times, as before I took classes I had a hard time. But when mispronunciations defy logic it hurts my head. The common western pronunciations of karaoke and hara-kiri fit in with this one.

The Karai episodes were alright, but none of the others did anything for me. And what other Shredder episode was there? I remember one where they fought him briefly on a dock but it lacked any of the suspense of the fight in 'The Gauntlet'. I don't really like Bradford and Xever after they were mutated. I thought their fight scenes were much more interesting in their human forms.

Well, after being delayed for so many weeks, this episode has FINALLY aired. Contrary to how some people feel, I thought this episode was awesome. I loved the horror feel that it had, and it really had me on the edge of my seat as I continued to watch it. I loved how Leo got infected first and how they showed his pain and agony as the infection affected him. The fact that Mikey managed to remember everything Don said about the antibody and was able to make it was awesome. It definitely shows that Mikey isn't as dumb as everyone says he is. I also liked the demon voices for the Turtles when they got infected. So creepy. Overall, a really awesome episode. Can't wait for next week.

Favorite quotes:

Mikey: Fire the weapons, Raph.
Raph: I don't think so.
Mikey: See? That's your problem. If I was in charge of weapons, I'd be firing everything. That mailbox? Boom! That newspaper stand? Bam! That Port-A-Potty? Splat!
Leo: And that's why you're not in charge of weapons. Now go back to your station and tell me which way to go.
Mikey: Uh, you should take a right three blocks ago.

Raph: He's really turned screaming and running away into an art form.
Don: Well, at least he's good for something, right? *pause* Well, good-ish.

Raph: Did you just bite me?! You bit me!

Mikey: Does anybody want any pizza? It's Leo's favorite. Jelly bean, anchovy, and jalapeno!
Don: Isn't that your favorite?
Mikey: Just go with me on this one.

Raph: Oh, boy, an episode of that not so stupid Space Heroes show.
Don: You're really missing a good one, Leo.

Raph: Hey, Mikey, what are you doing with Leo's rare signed issue 1 of Space Heroes comic book?
Mikey: Well, we've run out of toilet paper, and I thought a few pages of this comic would do the trick nicely. *wipes comic on his shell* Oh, yeah, that feels nice.

Raph: If I ever get excited over centrifuge, just put me out of my misery.

Mikey: I almost passed out like nineteen times, bro.

Leo: You did save our lives, but you also used my comic as toilet paper.
Mikey: Yeah, but I only did that so you would chase me.
Leo: Well, it worked. *chases Mikey*
Mikey: Hey, stop that! I'm a hero!

See you next week guys.

I almost didn't finish watching this ep due to my major fear of Bees and Wasps... GAH!!! :o

I'd like to point something out tho.

The wasp stung Leo, then died. In reality a wasp can sting somebody MULTIPLE times before dying. So, did it sting a Kraang before they arrived??

Also, Parasitic Wasps generally lay their eggs INSIDE a host (like a spider), which is then eaten from the inside out. They do NOT brainwash insects to do their bidding. :trolleye:

And was it just me or did Capt Ryan's lady friend look like Karai??

I dont usually comment on individual episodes but it ticks me off that there was over a month without any new just to get such a dumb episode. This was easily the worst so far. Generic story, stupid jokes and all around uncreative.

They really couldn't come up with a better way for Mikey to save them than "I was barely able to finsh the anti-virus"?

And what a stupid joke in using the rare comic as toilet paper. I didnt think much at first til the end when he confirmed he really did it.

FINALLY got to watch this episode! I usually don't dig the whole 'mutant of the week' garbage Nick loves to seem to churn out, but I thought this episode was totally hilarious. There's been a few eps lately that have been feeling a little ho-hum to me, but this episode genuinely made me laugh all throughout. Not only that, but it was one of the rare times I actually felt the brotherly connection. There was good-natured teasing here and there, but unlike a few other times, none of it felt like it was spoken with genuine malicious intent. The body language really came across well and just overall the chemistry between the boys felt like it just worked. I don't really care if April and Splinter weren't there, sometimes I just want to watch the turtles, you know? Plus, there really felt like some actual danger there for awhile, especially after Raph was bitten and then the intensity upped even more with Don (though I did wish we had gotten to see him get bit instead of how quickly that was tacked on).

RaphAndDonnie

I finally got to see the episode today :) I really like how the bee looked in this episode. It wasn't too overly cartoony-It really looked like a giant bee. Raph's sarcasm was great and pretty on the mark. I like how this episode was very horror-y and zombie like and how Leo and Raph were the ones that were bitten so that it gave Donnie and Mikey (and later just Mikey) a chance to shine.Even though Mikey is one of my least favorite turtles I really enjoyed him here. It really seemed like there was no hope until he stuck his brothers with the antibody.

Overall a really good filler episode.

It reminds me of Don making the antivirus for Raph when he was poisoned, he didn't even know what the poison exactly was, but could find a cure in 5 minutes in a moving car.

.....they're mutant turtles, that live in the sewer, and are trained in ninjitsu...and the unrealistic quality youre concerned with is how they make antidotes... I hate when people use that sort of argument. "So and so is this outrageous character(s) that does so and so". As if that excuses poor writing or dumb plot points.

Every franchise, in and of itself, is meant to be real. I mean the Turtles are just as real here as Batman is in his universe. Every fictional character is.

There IS a limit to whats believable in each of their circumstances. The guy had the same point I did. It was all resolved way too easily and not even very creative.

Raphaeline
07-24-2013, 01:24 PM
I totally agree with Wildcat.

It's not because seeing mutant turtles is not realistic that everything should be unrealistic, like, I don't know, Raphael suddenly uses teleportation for no reason during a fight without it being explained, Shredder transforming into a school bus, stupid things like this

Even Peter Laird or Kevin Eastman (I don't remember which one) in a blog said that Donnie was intelligent, but making antidotes in 5 minutes like this out of nowhere while he's not a biologist at all was "too much". So you see...
