Can't wait until we find out what her exact role will be. If she turns out to be Irma the that'll be pretty cool.

I just watched Green with Jealousy last night, and Irma was just golden.

What a coincidence.

Knowing Abby Elliott (Chris Elliott's daughter) from SNL I'd assume Irma as well.

Never seen her or heard about her ever before, so I have no real opinion on her casting. Well, I guess I do because my initial reaction was "A blonde Irma? Do not want." but what can ya do...

First Vernon, now Irma, yep definitely getting an OT movie and that leaked scripted has either been completely trashed or VERY heavily re-written.

Part of me is a little disappointed. Before the sale we were looking at the fully Mirage inspired film, sure the sale and leaked script killed any hope of that but the recent confirmation of Vernon and now Irma have put the final nails in that coffin. But at the same time the little kid in me is over joyed! This is the film I dreamed of as a kid. Now if only we can get confirmation of the real Shredder and some spy pics of people in Bebob and Rocksteady mo-cap suits and I think the film could actually have a chance at being a really decent adaptation of the TMNT that most of us grew up on.

Let's see... Vernon casted, and now Irma is rumored. (I'm pretty sure Abby Elliott will be, but I need a little more confirmation though. Otherwise... what other TMNT character could she play? And on top of that, she's a comedian actress...so it kind of limits the possibilities to Irma.)

I can bet the humor is going to be hilarious between Abby Elliott (Irma) and William Arnett (Vernon), if its done right, since those two are always teasing and insulting each other in the OT. These two could be the comic relief the movie needs if this movie turns out to be a darker interpretation of the OT, since I assume this movie is probably going to be PG-13. (Right...?)

What's next Burne Thompson? LOL  (Won't be surprised...)

Yeah it's drifting more toward an OT vibe, but with those "military-esque" Foot Soldiers it's seems more of a modernized weaponry Foot Clan, which throws a "monkey wretch" in the whole situation. I can see that the production, writers, and directors are pretty smart to incorporate those OT elements because there's nothing more appealing to a movie than using cherished nostalgia elements that a generation grew up with. Especially a generation that is now earning income and can bring their own children along. These trickling pieces of information are making this movie more intriguing. Even though this movie may have the cherished elements of the OT, it still doesn't promise that the script and characterization will be good though. Unfortunately, we'll probably have to wait for the answer for that question when the critics and early screening viewers see the movie in 2014.

Okay now...this may be a stretch for some , but do you guys find Abby Elliott to be cuter and more appealing than Megan Fox? The thought crossed my mind when I noticed Jester and other commenters (in the article) say that Abby Elliott should be April.

I'm ok with Irma being in it, if she actually is, since they're making an OT-based film. Not where I would go, specifically, but I'm not telling them the story, they're telling me the story. On that note...

Let it go, bro. Do I agree with you that a predominantly-OT TMNT film is NOT what *I* would have done, given the chance? Absolutely. I don't think that by itself the OT is the best representation of the franchise.

But I absolutely don't think for a second a 100% Mirage-based TMNT film would be what's best for everyone, either. It may be "the source material", but it's absolutely not any different from any other version of TMNT in one sadly crucial way: About 1/3 of it is absolutely great, but you can skip at least 2/3s of it and not miss a damn thing, and will actually get a more enjoyable experience.

No matter what anyone says about "their" TMNT, be it Mirage, the OT, 2K3, the Archie books, etc., one thing is always true: Some true gems are in each series' storylines, but just as much if not more is either forgettable or just bad and/or worth skipping. Mirage isn't immune to that. Not one version of TMNT stands out as being "right" to me, they all added things that were memorable, expanded the audience, and helped the franchise grow. And that's a GOOD thing.

I know I drop a lot of comic analogies on you, but that's because I know you read at least as many comics as I do, if not more, and we're really into a lot of the same stuff, which is cool. But I wonder sometimes, do you get as riled up when other franchises deviate from "the source material" in the name of reaching a broader audience? Some of my favorite characters in comics were definitely NOT at their best during their "Year One" phase. Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Flash... they all benefited greatly from things that were added to the mythology by others, and I say TMNT are no different at all. Would a Superman who could not fly be a global icon having a blockbuster movie made about him 75 years later? I really doubt it, and frankly, a movie in 2013 with a blue footsie-pajama Superman who can't fly and fights 1940s gangsters would be a horrible decision. I honestly don't think Batman in the comics would have stayed relevant, either, without quickly adding Robin to soften the tone and give young kids a character to better relate to (those purple mittens didn't help Bats' case, either). Back to Superman, what would it be like if they'd never invented Kryptonite (not in "the source material", by the way, but in the very-different spin-off radio show)? Boooorrrr-ing. Some say the proliferation of Kryptonite in the comics and other media has become overdone, and I'd agree, but let's be honest: Would it be somehow *better* if the writers were reduced to always trying to invent scenarios risking Superman being hit by a train? After all, it was established very early in "the source material" that was one of the only ways to harm or kill him.

In other words: Should we simply ignore or erase the work that dozens of writers and artists put into expanding the mythologies of various fictional characters, simply because they contradict what one or two guys may have originally written in their notes some 30-80 years ago? OR, should they be allowed to grow and expand, like all fictions do, and be added to over time to create the most relevant version of the character(s) to their given time or place in the culture?

As far as the TMNT film, I'm approaching very, VERY cautiously. My hopes/expectations are fairly low, but I'm with those who say "at least we now semi-know what to expect," and frankly, I agree to a point that it's more important at this stage to make a film that appeals to a large audience, rather than adhere to any "source material" or try and appease critics and Academy voters who will never "get it" anyway with a "purists" take. I promise you, if Hollywood made a purely Mirage-based TMNT film, two things would happen: It would do sh*tty box office because it's a niche version of the material, thus ensuring another 10-15 year wait for another TMNT film, and secondly, not one critic or non-fan would take TMNT more seriously just because the purists take itself is "More serious". No sane person looks at something called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" without realizing it HAS to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Don't take my opinion, take any critic, adult over 40 or "normal, non-fan" and ask them what *they* think of when someone says "TMNT". They think it's a joke, and that has only a little bit to do with the OT. People were calling it a joke when the first Mirage comic saw print. Let's not pretend otherwise, it's pretentious.

Fans have a tendency to elevate things they love to an artificial level of importance. I get it. We all do it. We love things and take them seriously, and want others to do the same, and we get frustrated when things happen that we feel keeps others from seeing what we love about this or that. But that's because we're "fans", short for "fanatics", which of itself implies we have a slightly-biased view of things to begin with.

What's really more important: A film that adheres strictly, and boringly, to the source, which would thrill a vocal minority and likely not win over many new fans, OR a more wide-open TMNT film that brings in a few million new fans, which in turn means more movies, more cartoons, more toys, and more TMNT in general for ALL of us? I vote B.

To me, the "right" way to do a TMNT film would be to take liberally from ALL the different versions and apply the most memorable and relevant bits into one cohesive whole. That's the best way to please the most people; a Mirage film, an OT film, a 2K3 film... I don't honestly think any one of those has a strong enough base on its own to make "the best possible TMNT film". Just the best possible film *for those fans, and no-one else*. I'm not overly-thrilled they seem to be going 99% OT, but again, "seats-to-asses", it's the best way to go if their main concern is money and expanding the franchise, and they insist on elevating one version above the rest. You have to give the people what they want, and most people seem to prefer the OT.

Sorry for the essay, and for going so far off the main topic with it, but I truly don't understand why anyone who thinks a Mirage TMNT film is the only way to go hasn't just stopped paying attention to the film entirely by now, let alone keep voicing their dismay about it. It's great to have an opinion, but you're all spitting in the wind at this point. You're never, ever going to get what you want.

I'm sorry, but this is as nice as I can put it: Mirage is Dead, the franchise has long since passed you by and been passed on to others who don't love it like you do, and if that one piece of the TMNT history is all you think is worthy of being remembered or adapted, well... why are you even a TMNT fan anymore to begin with?

Again, sorry to rant, just... get OVER it, already, guys... seriously... even if the movie sucks, it won't specifically be because it was based on the OT, it'll be because it was done badly. One need not preclude the other, not at all.

She is also darn cute unlike the overrated Fox. Hope she gets a chance to shine. Maybe get a cool cameo with her dad Chris Elliot? That would be cool.

I agree with your statement here in which any franchise has to adapt to the time and culture to be considered relevant and prosper. Furthermore any version of TMNT will have its highs and lows in terms of story writing, like you said before.
To expand on the OT topic on why its preferred, is because it was the version that brought it to the mainstream and somehow resonated with children and its audience. Not every cartoon can boast about making such a huge pop cultural impact and last for 10 years on network television. (I sometimes get the worrying impression that the OT is considered the "gold standard" of commercial success for the Nick version and... maybe... this film which can have equally good and bad consequences.) Of course some may be critical saying the OT's success was because of the promotion, but promotion can only get so far and some are forgetting how outlandish and ridiculous the concept was in the first place that we (as fans and the general public) take for granted. I mean seriously teenage... mutant... ninja... turtles...? I'm sure it was a huge "What the?!?!??" moment for people in the mid '80s hearing about it. But nevertheless as outlandish as the concept was, whether it was the OT's character dynamics or storytelling, it somehow struck a chord with its audience and is the main reason why us Generation Y folk were appealed to TMNT in the FIRST place.

Being overtly critical of a TV series or comic in hindsight is 20/20, anyone can do that. (i.e. It's hilarious how some people today still criticize the lack of action/fighting within a cartoon, when the series was already getting heat from soccer moms because of its violence and was pushing '80s censorship for cartoons.) While others may gripe about the OT's flaws from a hindsight perspective, I admire how the OT staff had the foresight and vision to transcend the underground comic into a beloved pop culture franchise. Hindsight is 20/20, but foresight takes a much greater vision.

Sorry for the essay, and for going so far off the main topic with it,
...I actually appreciate these essays Leo656! I enjoy reading these more global perspective viewpoints on the franchise. Being a moderate fan of TMNT, its an interesting perspective in seeing both ends of the fandom. One example are details that would make devoted fans squabble which would make the general public/casual fans comment, "Who cares? They're gonna get worked up over that?" while some of those casual fans who make more uninformed comments about the franchise or a particular reinterpretation would make more devoted fans say, "Could they be anymore ignorant and clueless?"
So its an interesting vantage point from where I'm at. ;)

Great insight and perspective Leo656! Hope to see more! :D

Turtle jumbalaya? That kind of stuff is better served in the realm of fanfiction. And is pretty creatively bankrupt. I'd rather see either see -- for once -- a faithful take on the source material (a direction for which has already critically proven to be the best route, on the big screen) or the vision of a director passionate about the material who "gets" it who doesn't borrow from anything that has come before.

We haven't gotten any new SNL broadcast here for decades so I have little idea who this actress is to judge but she does seem like a suitable Irma.

As for...

Taking the best or most memorable things each new iteration added and putting them together is not really a problem if they fit. Making a movie with Mirage inspired TMNT and Shredder but with Hun and Bebop and Rocksteady in the mix sounds great in theory.

Are we really getting the best aspects though? Did anyone really want to see Vernon Fenwick in a lead role? He didn't even have a lead role in the actual cartoon he's from. Also this movie is only taking its cues from one previous version which kind of invalidates this whole "it all counts" mentality. Not to mention I'm laying odds that nothing substantive from the Fred Wolf show is taken. It'll basicaly be the same movie we were getting with alien turtles but with tweaks to make it look like a TMNT movie.

After all, it was established very early in "the source material" that was one of the only ways to harm or kill him.

Surely other franchises have their own fans to go into meltdown when things get uneccessarily changed. :D

TMNT is in a unique position that the version the media most associates with is quite far removed from the original. Fans compare it Batman in this respect but 1966 Batman series was similar to what the comics were like at the time and had all the characters and tropes from the comic intact. Apart from maybe King Tut I don't think any of the original characters or elements of that show struck a chord with the public. Not to mention the character was allowed to change back to something along the lines of what he was created to be in pop cultures eyes.

That being said despite some of the guff given to it by some fans the 1987 show did keep what I feel to be the fundamentals of the TMNT as I think all versions have. There are aspects of any property that are intrinic to it that I feel have to be present.

In every version of Batman there has to be the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne, in Spider-man Ben Parker has to be shot by the criminal Peter allowed to get away earlier, in Superman Krypton has to be destroyed

The same applies with TMNT. They have always been fighting an armored guy that goes by the name Oroku Saki and leads a clan of ninja thieves because he has a mad on for a guy named Yoshi. They fact they even contemplated changing that is shocking. Not all change should be embraced.

For all we know, we might get a movie with a more Mirage feel, but with a Fred Wolf character cast to reel in the nostalgics.

April was a reporter in the first movie as well, even though it had little impact of ruining the Mirage feel, since the story was completely different then what happened in the issues. That we have a few of April's coworkers in the movie might not change the story's mood too much, just include a few jokes here and there and a human/outsider perspective(point-of-view-characters) on the craziness of humanoid terrapins fighting a ninja clan in New York.

I actually like the idea of applying different bits from different incarnations. That's what's always been so great about the TMNT. Each universe is original enough to be labeled as something new, but not so far-fetched that it can't all work together.

I actually like what they're doing with the April business in this film. If you're going to make her a reporter, what most people know her as, you might as well take it a step further and include channel 6's supporting cast. Just like if they wanted to include a government threat, why not have Bishop be part of that threat? It's a cool shoutout to the fans and a nice tribute to the franchise.

I highly doubt this movie is going in that direction, but it's a great idea. Ever since Laird sold the TMNT to Nick, stuff from the OT has had a major presence. So I'm not too surprised to see that this movie is going there for inspiration, but I wouldn't call it an OT film adaptation.

You got your "faithful TMNT movie" in the 90s...be happy you got that and stop wishing it be done all the f*cking time. It's high time we 80s cartoon fans had our turn...and frankly, the only reason that first movie did well in the first place was because it was piggy-backing the momentum of the original cartoon. The second and third films had diminishing returns because the fad was losing steam. That's all.

The 2007 movie? Tried to be a mix of 4Kids and source material and BOMBED. There was no "golden age" to sustain it either because the 23k series was entering what was considered it's creative nadir also.

The stars are alligning well right now. The old show is in the mainstream eye again with the DVDs, the Nick show is a resounding success, and something that will piggy-back off both of those entities is the logical route to take. Anyone complaining about this should turn in their fan card because they contribute nothing but the same old broken record mentality of "What I had in my day should be the only way because I'm a moody old pessimist twat with entitlement issues"

To ignore the fact that the first movie came out at the peak of the turtles popularity and subsequent sequels were all during its nosedive is silly.

I think you're being glib about this. No doubt that it was helped a lot by the fad created at the time by the 1987 animated series but why is it still regarded as the best TMNT movie by a wide margin?

The 2007 movie? Tried to be a mix of 4Kids and source material and BOMBED. There was no "golden age" to sustain it either because the 23k series was entering what was considered it's creative nadir also.

What exactly came from the Mirage comics in the Imagi movie? It seemed to be a toned down episode of 4kids show with homages to the previous live action features. The rest was all new created for the movie.

Not sure the old show is really in the mainstream any more than it was a few years ago. Despite the fact everyone initialy assumed the the Nick show was going be modern Fred Wolf show it actualy takes very little from that show as opposed other versions.

Sticking to the source material has proven successful, time after time.

BUT, that's when the source material is what made the franchise great, in the first place. TMNT is kind of unique, in that the adaptation totally overshadowed the original. You could argue that OT is what made TMNT matter, and that it uprooted Mirage as 'what made the franchise great in the first place.'

If they keep going super-OT with this, the theaters will be full of TMNT fans, thinking, "Finally, a movie that sticks to the source material! Finally a movie that recognizes what we all fell in love with, in the first place!"

Thats the great thing about the turtles, there have been several various interpretations that have brought people in. From the OT to the Mirage comics, I think the Turtles have done best when well blended with all its various unique components.

Mirage may be the original source material, but I can guarantee that a lot of fans grew up and became fans of TMNT through the original cartoon, so I think having a movie like that is a good idea. It will bring back a lot of fans and introduce new fans to what came before the Nick cartoon.

A movie based on the first few issues would be one heck of a ride, and I would love to share that experience with more than just the people on this forum. But at the same time, we already have it. The prospect of a new TMNT universe is a lot more exciting, to me. That's why I would be down with Schrader and alien turtles.

On this source material vs OT thing, I have to say I did become a fan because of the OT. Though at the time I thought that was the original turtles. Had no clue there was a comic version, I couldn't read back then anyway. My mom and grandmother had no clue there was one either. I would bet that's the same for a lot of people. Hell, I knew a kid from high school that thought the first movie came first and then a cartoon was made from it.

Anyway on topic, I think the girl is pretty. More so than Fox anyway.

I wouldn't say the 1990 film was only a huge success just because of the cartoon. I don't think it holds up anywhere near as well as it does if that was the case. Just look at Secret of the Ooze. If I didn't have a prior connection to the film, I can honestly say I'd have a difficult time watching it especially if I watch it after the first one. I think the diminishing returns come from the fact that they caved to the outcry for the first one being so violent. This isn't to say I disapprove of a film using OT elements or being more of a lighter fun adventure style film. (I love the Dark Knight Trilogy, but I also love the lighter/fun Avengers and Marvel univeese films) What I care about is getting a quality film, which I'm still skeptical about.

I'd also like to point out that the 2007 film didn't bomb. It was a successful film grossing $96 M workdwide on a $34 M budget according to boxofficemojo. (Similar to Kick Ass which is getting a sequel)

Keep in mind, that rant wasn't suggesting that any TMNT version be elevated over others as far as what should a film be based on. Rather, since there have been so many takes that vary greatly, but each have passionate fans, I kind of think it only fair that each version gets a "shout out" of sorts in a film. Probably not equally represented - that would be hard to pull off - but a storyline and/or tone from Mirage, with characters from the OT/2K3 series, for example, wouldn't be impossible.

I could totally see a semi-serious (it is TMNT after all, not "Enter The Dragon") film with a story loosely based on any number of Mirage stories, but with characters like Krang or Bebop and Rocksteady from Fred Wolf, or Hun from 2K3, and I think it could be even better than the first film, if done properly. Deep down, I think cartoon characters and concepts depicted within the "more mature" style of the first film is what most fans really are looking for, whether they know it or not, or admit it or not. Part II did the opposite, trying to fit stuff from the first film's more serious story into a plot that was unapologetically based on the cartoon, and the clash of styles killed it. That doesn't mean a mash-up of "more mature" and "cartoon-based" can't work, it just means they tried fixing what wasn't broken and kept fixing it 'til it was broken.

I mean, I totally get that Part II was right up some fans' alley, but I don't think it had the more-universal appeal of Part I. I totally agree with Andrew that the first film was the closest we've seen so far to what I would call "ideal", and a lot of that had to do with the tone. The fact that it wasn't hell-bent on being silly made the first film appeal not just to kids, but the parents and older siblings they dragged to the theater, who left saying "Y'know, that actually wasn't a bad movie". The difference is presenting "silly" ideas with actual dramatic weight, reality, "verisimilitude" (thank you, Richard Donner), a wink to the audience, sure, but not "Let's just make fun of what we're supposed to be taking seriously". That's the difference in appeal between TMNT 1 and 2, or say, Superman 1 vs. Superman 3. You can have fun with it, especially if it's sort of a silly concept to start with, but start actively insulting it for the sake of being silly, you risk losing a big chunk of the audience. That's one thing I think Andrew and I can agree on.

That, and that Guy Gardner is the One True Green Lantern! :P

I stand by my statement that you can skip 2/3 of Mirage and not miss much. At least, if what you want in TMNT is a consistent narrative. Most of Vol. 1 wasn't canon at all, so I'm not sure if it's as sacred to the "purists" as, say, Issue 1 or "City At War". Some of the non-canon stories were lots of fun to read, absolutely. BUT, let's be honest, a lot of the fill-in issues were as balls-out goofy as the Fred Wolf show, if not even more so, and they didn't expand the actual storyline one bit. Basically, Kev and Pete paid some industry buddies to write and draw TMNT fanfiction for a few dozen issues worth. Fun stuff, sure, but you could skip it all and it wouldn't hurt your understanding of TMNT as they were presented in Mirage's canon. Whether you enjoy it or not, that's not what I was talking about. For myself, I first read Mirage Vol. 1 in numbered order, and I liked a lot of the fill-ins, but I was getting annoyed that after a while it seemed like the "real" story was never coming back.

I also got annoyed when Laird admitted he may never finish the storyline of Vol. 4. I "get" his "Real life doesn't have structured beginnings, middles, and endings" rationale, but what HE never "got" is that he was producing commercial entertainment, and if you expect people to pay you money for a story, while saying to their face, "I hope you enjoy this, but I'm never going to finish it," you are f*cking them over, to put it plainly. No matter how good it may be written, narrative storytelling is structured "Beginning, Middle, End", NOT "Beginning, Middle, Thanks For Reading and Go F*** Yourselves". You can't seriously expect people to invest emotion in a plot which they know will never see resolution. Based on that, and the "April is a Drawing" story, I think Vol. 4 is entirely skip-worthy. The "Tales of the TMNT" series released in the same era was tons better, in my opinion. It was an anthology, but it was far more enjoyable and a much easier read overall. Plus it was more fun, while Vol. 4 was damn near maudlin. Vol. 4 was as far as it gets from what I wanted to see in an ongoing TMNT comic, and it was written by the creator. Shame.

Warboss: Good call on TMNT 2K7's financial "Success", it did make money, but the fact is studios have quotas which can mean a film can still make money but be "a loser" if it didn't make *enough*. Example: "Superman Returns" made a lot more money in theaters than "Batman Begins", and a lot more on DVD as well. Critical reviews at the time of release were very similar for each film (mostly positive) as well. BUT, expectations for Batman were low at the time, while Superman had a magic number of $500 Million which it fell short of. Thus, Batman got two sequels and Returns is a "failure" that was critically acclaimed and made a ton of cash. Lesson: Hollywood Math makes NO sense at all.

After seeing those photos, I agree this girl would be a better April than Fox, as far as looks go, at least. Haven't seen her act so I don't have an opinion, but it isn't hard to imagine her acting talent being superior, either.

Spot-on assesment there.

Granted I think the serious elements of "Ooze" helped save the movie a lot...but it was my total lack of care for Tokka and Razar that deflated those bits that I could have otherwise enjoyed, if it had been Bebop and Rocksteady I'd still be blinded by nostalgia for it today. I also could have done without the Super Shredder ending, even at an impressionable age, I figured they were selling me a toy with that bit (although the mutants were clearly doing the same thing). I think "Ooze" is a bit underrated actually...the third movie was void of mutants, aliens, and the other familiar trappings of the cartoon atmosphere, hence an even bigger deflation in interest, combined with the diminishing returns of the overall franchise, now long been milked and running on it's devoted fanbases.

Part of my looking forward to the new movie is I think we have a better method of balancing the frankness of a story with the absurdity...I'm looking at it having a flippancy to it that could make it really entertaining. Nothing to dwell too hard on...Turtles has long passed out of the dark in cultural relevancy to ever properly manage that.

I don't know what the DVD sale figures are, but Superman Returns only made about $20 M more worldwide according to boxofficemojo. (Roughly $391 M to 371 M) The big issue with Superman Returns is it had a $270 M production budget compared to Batman Begins' $150 M production budget. I have no idea if those figures are just what it cost to make the film or if it includes advertising on top of that. If those figures don't include the advertising, then Superman Returns didn't make a very big profit especially against the amount of money the studio spent on it. I think thise are far different examples when compared to TMNT ($34 M budget) and Kick-Ass ($30 M budget). I believe there were discussions for a sequel to TMNT before the sale.

Leo656

You're right, I just live with a belief that $20 million is still a lot of money. Mileage may vary, especially when discussing Hollywood films with unreasonably large budgets. I am pretty sure WB spent an ass-load more on advertising Returns than Begins, but that would also support my theory that expectations, rather than just dollars and cents, was a bigger factor in which movie "failed".

Zarius: I agree, I definitely think Ooze would be more fondly remembered by many if they'd just sucked it up and used Bebop and Rocksteady. F*ck Laird's "No Fred Wold cartoon concepts in the movies" mandate, they were playing around with giant evil mutants, the horse was already out of the barn on that one and NOT using the familiar characters fans wanted and expected to see in those roles was a giant middle finger to the audience, and completely hypocritical. I also agree how odd it is that part III did in fact tone down a LOT of II's goofiness, yet is viewed as being even worse then II by many. I've always believed that's because some things can be "So bad they're good", as many say of TMNT II, but III wasn't "bad" as much as "bland", and something simply cannot be "So bland it's good".

I'm pretty sure it was both Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman that made the call for Bebop and Rocksteady not to be in the movie.

The idea that it'd be more fondly remembered if they'd used those two characters doesn't mean that it would also be percieved as on par in quality with the first movie or seen to still stand up quite well today.

Probably right, it was both of them, but I think if you asked Kevin today he may just say they made a mistake back then.

The way they decided to do TMNT II, there was NOTHING they could do to make it on par with part I. They killed that dream when they decided to dumb it down for the kids. But it still could have been better. People bitch 20 years later that they wish Tokka and Rahzar were just Bebop and Rocksteady. Not everyone, but a decent amount of people. It might have been marginaly more enjoyable if they'd used Bebop and Rocksteady in the sense that you'd recognise two characters from the cartoon but it wouldn't improve the movie any. The movie would still spend all its time setting up two henchmen that the turtles couldn't have a decent fight with.

That's a bit a problem I have with including the characters now. To me they are too important to simply handle their origin mostly off screen but not so important that I'd want to see the majority of the movie setting them up like it with SOTO.

If memory serves, wasn't it Laird who made that call, not wanting to use things from the show?

Only in the modern stuff after he owned all. Stuff like the 4Kids series and Imagi movie etc.

I think it should be ointed out that The Next Mutation which was Kevin's baby didn't use any characters from the Fred Wolf show either.

There's no way to know for sure but it seems from the production notes Peter has put on his blog that he and the 4Kids crew were on the same page in regards to what they wanted the show to be. Whether they would have used Fred Wolf characters if not for Laird is probably up in the air but it never seemed like they were chomping at the bit to include them

Ironicaly Peter actualy suggested having a cameo from a Fred Wolf character...Vernon. He was supposed to be the reporter in the episode "New Blood".

Yes, but Rahzar/Tokka were heavily popularized just for being in the second movie. They also appeared in two videogames, TMNT III for NES and Turtles in Time for SNES which popularized them as well.

Finally they both appeared in the cartoon for one episode in, "Dirk Savage, Mutant Hunter" in addition to their toys.

I don't think Vernon is too necessary but I guess they wanted April to interact with a constant human charcter apart from the turtles. I've always like Vernon more than Irma. Hopefully Will Arnett brings a comedic performance and seriousness to the film.

Irma. She seems fairly popular within the fanbase.

Not being a US person I have no clue whether Abby Elliot has a following although she seems liked on here.

I agree about Will Arnett and the expanded role of Vernon. In fact I'd lay odds that Vernon has replaced Casey Jones' in the rewrite of the script.

That would be a twist but Karai is not in this film. She is most likely Irma, but would be better for her and Megan to have their roles switched, but what can fan do? Wish she was on SNL still.Michaels could have highlighted her right whe. She was dumped!

I have questioned a number of hires for roles in TMNT since Laird sold off the franchise, but Elliott and Arnett are a couple of actors I look forward to seeing.

Hardly. If anything, it's the other way around. Irma has been set to appear in the Nick series since way before the first episode even aired. We know that for certain. If it doesn't predate her live action conception, then it's merely coincidence.

At any rate, I'm curious about her too. If anyone finds some news about Abby's involvement, do share!

Hmmm, awesome, give her a dye job, and she's good. It would be funny to play her off Vernon. I just wish we could get Rocksteady and bebop into the mix! :D

And I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you look across many diffrent stories and mythological cycles, the only signifgance the 'source material' usually has is it's the first version. A 'common mythology' ususally develops out of all the various adaptations, retellings, and additions later storytellers add. If you resticted storytellers to going back to the 'source material' well, the aurthian cycle, Greek/Roman mythology and the superman mythos would all be very, very different. Once the 'common mythology' of 4Kids, Fred Wolf, the movies, archie, and all the others entered the public consiousness, it can be argued that Mirage simply became another ingredient in the 'common mythology soup' that superceeded it's primacy. I would point to Harley Quinn, Jimmy Olsen, Kryptonite, and Sir Lancelot as not originating from the source material in thier respective fictions, and migrated into the 'common mythology' from andaptations/retellings.

In other words, from literary/historical viewpoint, the magic words 'source material' is meaningless.

I am curious who she would play off of or how she would be worked into the script. She is NOT Irma but most likely an analog of the character. I found this in an interview from about a week ago.

Q: Can you say who Abby Elliott is playing?
Nemec: Probably. She plays April O'Neill's roommate.

Q: Does her name happen to be Irma?
Nemec: No.

You’re going to be in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’?
Yes.
I saw that you were, but I don’t know who you’re playing.
I play April’s roommate. It’s sort of a revamped Irma, but my name is Taylor. Yeah, so she’s like her best friend type character.
Was that fun?
Yeah, it was really fun. We finished shooting.
Do you get to be with the turtles at all?
Yeah!
Oh, that’s great.
Well, I’m not sure. I know they’re shooting a lot of new stuff for it. [Note: Elliott wanted to clarify, too, that she hasn't seen the final movie yet.]

Cant belive some fans think that 10 versions of turtles are better than one version which is true to the source material, when i discovered that there was mirage comics besides 80s cartoon then i wanted to read it and i respect it , cartoon is just a spinoff to me even if it introduced me to turtles, why would you want to please other people who dont care about tmnt by changing source material they DONT CARE ABOUT AT ALL ? Change something else like locations to make people care,m isnt new york enouugh for people to care ?Most bigger films are in new york its like capital of earth.
You really think changing sourvce materrial is great ? You can change something else, send turtles somewhere so people would relate but DONT TOUCH SOURCE MATERIAL.If they would respect it then fans here wouldnt complain at all, film wouldnt have bad vibe like it does now and reshoots dont help.

BUt see if you kept to an original source then thing would change or evolve one example would be superman wouldn't fly A main aspect of the character now. but i they stuck with the "source" then he would never be able to. I get what your saying but they're all different in there own ways and that doesn't mean they are bad I love every version of TMNT for one reason or an other.

Mirage was great started it all but darker and more adult.

Wolf series, did its own thing but it drew many fan more then the mirage comic ever would have on its own and essentially turned tmnt into one of the largest more popular franchises ever.

Movie trilogy, started out as pretty faithful but ended up doing its own thing great mix of tone, seeing a realized turtle on screen.

TMNT Music career And interesting time some were better then others other were next to unwatchable, but as a kid many of us ate it up.

Image Comic, did it own thing kept with the darker theme but added some obscure themes and story arcs.

NT TNM did it own thing some hate it some like it some hate character some like it. But for what it was (a tv show on par with Power rangers)

2k3 totally awesome, kept many themes and tones of mirage while making it its own thing

2k7 Movie, Brought the show universe and the movie verse together in and interesting way, load of action very well animated lacking in some story elements but did its own thing.

IDW Epic comic starting there own thing some of the most drastic changed ever in tmnt history since the mirage to wolf changes. great story arcs great action great tone.

Nick series as with the wolf series a more "kid" friendly show lighter hearted action. Beautifully animated show great story arcs great characters and has pretty much brought the second coming of tmnt into this day an age.

PD movie, Seems to be doing its own thing So far feeling are mixed but one thing it will so the bring the four brothers to the big screen once again. we wont know how it will turn out till much later.

Point is all version are different soime more then others all loved for their own reasons i wouldn't want any of them to change, because people feel they have to stick closer to the "source" because if the stuck to the "source" we would not have gotten any of these version and chances are we wouldn't be on these forum talking about these thing at all.

respect the source sure but it's, it's own thing just like the rest

Sounds like she's done shooting, but the movie is not.

Judging from the interview it would seem she would see the film before a test audience therefore the possible leak make not be accurate. One thing I can say is I am looking forward to seeing both her and Arnett in the film. Support the actors other projects because they are great especially Abby not getting her time in the deserved spotlight yet.Not to mention coming from Chris Elliott and looking gorgeous with the inherited talent.

You can change something else, send turtles somewhere so people would relate but DONT TOUCH SOURCE MATERIAL.If they would respect it then fans here wouldnt complain at all, film wouldnt have bad vibe like it does now and reshoots dont help. Some people would say that setting the story in New York is important. Because there's no aspect of the original version of anything, that fans won't defend.

What is this idea that "source material" is perfect, by default, and there's no such thing as a good change? People defend every minute detail of the original version of anything, like each and every one of those aspects helped make the original thing great. Do people really think that the person who creates a work never looks back and says, "I could have done that better," or "I wish I had this with that character."

Anyone who creates anything, being writing, music, art, whatever, can tell you that nothing works out perfectly. There are times when you don't know what to do, and you just pull something out of the air, so you can finish. There are times where you start going one way, it doesn't work, and you have to do a patch job, and salvage what you can. Times when you don't get to flesh out something you wanted to, or express something you wanted to.

And, most importantly to this topic, every creative person looks at other people's work, and says, "I wish I had thought of that."

I really can't think of a better example then Sam, with Superman's flight. But there are countless accepted and respected elements of comic book mythologies that didn't exist, originally. Things that today's comic fans would freak out over, if they were changed. The difference is that TMNT is a young property, and most of these reboots and adaptations are still contributing to its mythology.
