View Full Version : Disturbing Moments In TMNT Media (Various Spoilers)

Lately I've been thinking about how many wild things have happened across the TMNT multiverse. Given the exception of certain volumes of the original comics, just about everything has been designed with children in mind, or at the least, it's geared towards a general audience but remains overall kid-friendly. Despite that, it seems that almost every version of 'turtles-light' has had several pretty messed up incidents take place. Some are right on the surface, whereas others require a little thought to truly realize how grim they are.

Heads up, there will be spoilers of some sorts being that these moments span across the many versions of the turtles. Anyway, here's just a few. You contribute too!

1987 Fred Wolf Series:
-Mutagen Mans Origin: A poor lonely delivery man finds his way into an abandoned facility where Shredder & the gang are working with a very unstable batch of mutagen. The klutz falls in and literally MELTS. All of his body parts are torn apart, his bones/muscles/guts all separate and he is eventually haphazardly put back together with random parts as his gooey insides are tossed into a containment chamber-turned-bodysuit.

-Muckmans Origin: A garbageman is splashed with some sketchy ooze, and the contents of a dumpster literally fuse to him, turning all of his skin and such into piles of slop. This could be anything and everything. Rotten food, dead roaches, dirty diapers, you name it. That's a terrible fate.

2003 4kids Series:
-Baxter Stockmans "Punishment": Shredder constantly destroyed Baxter, physically and mentally. We never saw what took place, nor did we hear about it. We only saw the consequences of his mistakes. First his eye is removed, and later he finds himself being chopped up bit by bit until he's eventually nothing more than a brain in a jar. Think about it for a minute, this implies that when the episodes end, Shredder takes Stockman in back and does something like literally carving his eye out with a rusty gauntlet blade. Dear god.

-Insane In The Membrane: Similar to Mutagen Man, Baxter Stockman finds his flesh falling off. His skin is rotting and melting off of the bone, his limbs are breaking apart, his mind falters. His experimentation with trying to make himself a new body is a total failure. Grotesque indeed!

2012 Nickelodeon Series:
-Mutagen Mans Origin: Yes, again, Mutagen Man. Yikes. Pulverizer insisted on becoming a mutant despite knowing the risks in dealing with unstable mutagen. He screamed for what felt like forever, feeling his skin burn until it fused with the ooze, turning him into a giant tentacle slamming blob of gelatin with only his warped-from-heat lips and popped out eyes for a face, his internal organs suspended inside the goo. At this point it seems he can barely hold a thought, let alone speak. He's a true tragic monster now. Eugh.

The Next Mutation:
-Mutant Reflections: Dragon Lord requires Dr. Quease to make a spy robot, one they can send into the sewers to stalk the turtles and collect DNA samples (to make clones). Rather than use a little camera from Radioshack or something, Dr. Quease busts out a scalpel, runs a nice vertical slice from the eyebrow to the cheek, and plucks out his own eyeball. That's what he made a camera out of. With no qualms. What the helllllll. To make matters weirder, when he grabs a new eye from a jar the damn thing makes squealing infant sounds. It's pretty unsettling in my opinion. :blanksta:

Mirage Comics:
-Donatellos dark side: We could go on for a while pointing out crazy stuff that went down in the comics, whether in the Mirage books or Image books. But one thing in particular that sticks out, is the big secret Donatello kept for a long long time. In the Mirage series, Baxter eventually found himself being a brain in a robot body, basically. He was at a certain point defeated, blown mostly apart and forgotten about. Fast forward a few years, in Donatello: The Brain Thief mini series, we come to find Donny took the remains of Baxter (who we see is still fully conscious) and kept him in a basement for years. He was just held captive there, given little to no stimulation, nailed to a wall. Later in the books Donny carelessly kills a stray dog 'for science' and starts rearranging cockroaches body parts giving them cybernetic add-ons & such. It's just... creepy.

So there's a full dose of spooky stuff! Lets hear some more!

If we go by the old cartoon, some of the stuff would have been VERY DISTURBING if the Turtles didn't come on time. I can imagine Mikey's final screams as that acid ooze melts him to nothing in that Flushomatic torture trap. Or if April got run over the Technodrome in that one ep. Hell, the one where she almost suffocated in that air-tight vault really got to me as a kid cause it was one of the most realistic possible deaths she could have gotten, instead of some sort of cartoony ray run death.

Let's not forget Baxter's execution by Krang. He was damn lucky that the fly wandered in there. For better or for worse, at least he was still alive. And then his apparent 'death' at the end of season 3 by the giant spider... that was somehow forgotten about when the Turtles hit saturday morning.

Let's not forget Baxter's execution by Krang.

Exactly the scene that came to mind when reading the original post. Baxter being drug kicking and screaming to what should be his doom by having his entire being zapped into complete nothingness. gruesome.

Still not sure how a single tiny fly causes the contraption to malfunction but thats another story haha.

Exactly. By all means, the fly would have just been disentegrated too.

I think it's a reference to the 1958 version of "The Fly" in which the transporter device that causes the transformation is called the "disintegrator-integrator". The cartoon, though, just calls it a "disintegrator" unit, because it's for destroying stuff.

People often forget that Mutagen Man almost killed April, by tying her into ropes that were pulling her into GEARS that would have grinded her body into shreds.

If the Turtles hadn't saved her in two seconds, her body would have been literally torn apart by gears with blood splattering everywhere Mortal Kombat style. Its rather funny to me that April forgave Mutagen Man so quickly later in the episode when he literally almost sent her to death in the most gruesome way possible.

April has a lot of other close calls in the original toon as well. Shredder also tried to kill April in a number of episodes or left her to her doom.

I kinda don't think April knew that guy she was gonna date was him. That's why the Turtles were all groaning at the end.

I'm glad you brought this up. I turned to my GF after the episode was over and said. How soon til they pull this episode off the air forever. It's not only the horrible mutation either.

There's the description of how some Japanese soldiers were used as "cannon fodder".

Ohh and how can we forget the great lesson the turtles learn in this one "Anything can be used as a weapon". Yup, grab a broom, a chain, a fence post, whatever. Now you too can fight like a ninja turtle:teek:

4kids series had a lot of stuff they got away with but everyone knows that.

I like to look for stuff in the original cartoon they got away with since its seen more as a kids show. There's also stuff like the Technodrome going to squash April while she was upside down trapped in her news van.

And don't forget Rat King's rather fitting end in the 2012 show! Apparently, he was devoured by his own rats. I once created an OC superheroine for a communal team-fic on Marvel, who could mentally communicate with/control animals, and she killed a villain the same way- by mentally "telling" a horde of rats that he had food on him, and then leaving him alone in the room to get eaten..... She's not a very nice character, admittedly.

If you think about it the Turtles literally torture Chronos from season 9 or 10 of the OT (not sure which season its in). The guy is driven insane after being left tied up in a clock tower by the turtles. and the turtles do this not once but twice to the guy.

MsMarvelDuckie
05-27-2013, 10:52 PM
And what about in the first movie, when Casey oh-so-casually throws the lever on the garbage truck after Saki fell into the back? That's just EVIL!!! And he just brushes it off with an overly--innocent "Oops!"

Or Norinaga in the bell in the thrid film, when Donatello slams it with his bo and you hear the poor guy cry ou in pain inside from the noise. It's played for laughs, but that was really sort of sadistic on Donnie's part.

Or minor moments in the OT like Mikey banging on the oil drum with the Crooked Ninja Turtle Gang member inside it- not only is the noise probably painful, but he beats it into a shape that leaves the guy basically unable to breathe.... Come to think of it, They did things like that a LOT.

I agree with this. I had never paid attention to how dark that scene in "Enter the Fly", along with April being poisoned and how Stockman seemingly dissappearing after flying into his own trap.

And don't forget Rat King's rather fitting end in the 2012 show! Apparently, he was devoured by his own rats

I don't thing he was devored, just carried away by the rats.

Speaking of the 2012 show, the way Raph took out the cockroach in "Cockroach Terminator" was pretty graphic.

I didn't get that from that scene. You can clearly see them swarming over him, but when they run off, they are all at the floor level, instead of lumped like they were when on him. It looked like a wave washing over him and then flowing back down- but leaving nothing left behind. Add in the way they kind of looked angry or hungry right before that.... Well, it's a pretty simple conclusion to make. Although it would be cool if he does show up again.

Raph trying to kill Mikey (Mirage comic, issue #2 I think).

Raph trying to kill Leo (TMNT 2007 movie).

Keep the psycho down, Raphie boy.

And don't forget he also tried to kill Mikey in that episode where he met Casey in 2K3! Yeah, he's always seemed a bit psycho to me, too. And maybe suicidal, to boot. (That rush right in and go berserk when outnumbered fighting style? Just TRY to tell me that ain't a sign of a death-wish....)

While it's probably more sad than truly disturbing, there's an episode in the OT (The Starchild, I think?) about a "kid" alien who goes around destroying entire planets. At the end he says he wants to go back and "fix" things, but if these places are really as bad off as the other aliens make them sound, then I'm doubting only non-living things were destroyed in his desire to simply play around. After all, he had no qualms with trying to skewer the Turtles with their own weapons.

And then of course there's the kid's father - it's never explicitly stated what happened to him, but it's made pretty obvious that he died in the war on his planet. Got me wondering what the kid did when THAT happened (if he knew it happened, of course) - if he's so good at destroying civilizations, he probably had a hand in messing up his own world as well.

It was just one of those OT episodes that actually left me thinking about the consequences that we would never actually get to see in a kid's cartoon like the OT.

Something that sticks to my mind is the "what if" scenario in Blind Sight.

The story if blind Leo fell down the roof and his corpse taken by the police. Doing autopsy and other things they reveal by fingerprints that there are more of him and most likely where they live. A SWAT team goes down to the sewers fins the lair and all hell breaks loose.

There is just something unsettling about that episode in the old show where three of the turtles get inflated into balloons or whatever the hell was going on there.

Raphael in Mirage pretty much intentionally choosing a bad future for himself because it's the better future for Shadow is a bit existentially horrible too. And pretty much their whole previous relationship in retrospect because of it.

Hell, the fact that Casey adopts Shadow the way he does. Doesn't exactly seem all that legal.

Karai kidnapping a baby because she's bored?

Some interesting stuff from Mirage:

- Splinter commits cannibalism due to the suggestion of the Rat King.

- Casey semi-accidently turns into a child-murderer.

- April wasn't born, she was drawn, by using Kirby's crystal and a pen. She and Renet re-experience this in roach forms, while they also have sex with other roaches.

- Worm Shredder. I don't think there's anything weirder in Mirage (or any other TMNT universe) than this. A huge welded worm colony which one's collective mind think that, he is the real Shredder. The Shark-form from Tales v2 is also creepy.

The entire Turtles Forever movie. To me, the idea of one's entire existence and world (not to mention a bunch of other universes) resting on whether or not one odd group of dopplegangers lives is utterly horrifying.

Also finding out your whole existence is little more then as a cartoon/comic (judging by everything being reduced to lines and then a white void) goes into utter nightmare zone territory.

Also in 2003, Baxter's finger melting off, jaw getting kicked off, and him having to violently put himself back together(I'm guessing he still had feeling...). "Twilight of the Ring" was the Mirage comic I picked up by accident as a child, and everything within its pages was pretty disturbing. Of course, now I realize what an excellent story it was, but the notion of the Turtles fighting a giant rat is still slighlty upsetting, for obvious reasons.

Some things don't seem as disturbing to me now than when I was a kid, but I'll list them anyway:

While now the death of the Mutanimals looks crude to me, as well as petty (because of the cancelled TV series), seeing them all lying in pools of (black) blood after being brutually gunned down is heavy stuff for a kids' comic.

The zombie soldiers in the Archie Cyber-Turtles arc were arguably standard stuff, but the one that opens the issue by saying "Killl mee...." was pretty chilling.

Also for Young Pterobat, I'm sure giving the cartoon version of Mutagen Man that giant skull-head was meant to make him look more "friendly", but I sure didn't make that distinction when I was young.

While "Insane in the Membrane" has already been discussed, on top of everything else, what got to me was that Baxter had to hold his body together with the crudest implements, incluiding *nails* and *staples*, and also that nobody at the facility seemed to realize or care what was happening to him. Bishop had walked off, and there was no one else around. He was, as usual, alone.

I can't view FW Baxter's story as something earnestly sad and tragic because of the tone of the old show, but I will admit that parts of it are pretty messed up when you think about them.

Oh, boy, I forgot a few more from the Archie comics:

Of course, that art was made to contrast with the vision Null gave Candy Fine of the Mutanimals burning in hell, which I've heard was cut from the European editions.

Death trying to take Kid Terra's soul near the end of the Four Hoursemen arc, especially because everyone is standing around and watching and not sure what to do.

Null saying he wants to make Juntarra and Azrael part of his "harem", and then showing us the mind-controlled Candy later on.

Even if the book was having trouble with the editors near the end of its run, I'm still shocked they got away with some of this.

The early issues weren't that bad, but, though it's light in comparison to the moments named above, Krang taking over Shredder's body by squishing himself over Shredder's head, and still being unable to feel the pain of that body, is pretty disgusting. Silly, but unsettling.

April being a drawing was disturbing for various reasons. Nothing in the story was as awful as Peter having her go back in time in the body of a roach, and making it a point to tell us that she had sex with other roaches. Because we needed to know all about all that. By "other roach things", I'm assuming April meant she also ate garbage and scat while a roach. F*cking. Awful.

The single most disturbing thing in the entire story? That the *creator* of the character, as well as of the entire TMNT universe, actually thought that was a logical, necessary story to tell. He thought it was good, and by telling it, it's implicit that this was always where April's story was meant to go, and I for one refuse to accept it, because it's horrible. Clearly, though, we're meant to accept it, because he wrote it and charged us 4 bucks for he privilege of reading it.

I'm 100% convinced the "April is a drawing" storyline was the end result of all the acid Laird ("allegedly") took in college. It's the only logical explanation: Major league flashback horror show. That sh*t never really leaves your brain, you know, it just kinda floats around in there which is why people have flashbacks. Don't do drugs, kids.

Probably, the apart-falling spacecraft hits the spider web, causing Baxter Stockman to fall down to the ground on that planet.

Image Comics Presents Teenage Mutilated Ninja Turtles: Back when the turtles were part of the Image universe the guys went through a lot of changes one being shredded like mozzarella cheese. Raph not only lost an eye he end up looking like two face and had to wear Casey's mask for awhile. Don was blown to pieces but was saved by being merged with a killer robot and became a cyborg. Leo got his hand eaten by a giant mutant lizard. Splinter got turned into a reject manbat. Mikey I think he had sex with some lame looking spiny lizard alien tell the truth he would have been better off getting a limb ripped off. it was really disturbing having to see the guys look like that what was also creepy was that you got the feeling this **** was permanent.

Same as it never was shocked this didn't get a mention yet The Turtles die sure its an alternate version but they actually die on screen and in such a sad a pathetic way as well. That was pretty disturbing to me.

The names Michael Bay, Jonathan Liebesman, and Platinum Dunes associated with a TMNT movie dont know about anyone else but I got chills thinking about the thought.

Donatello shot the **** out of an elite ninja and then threw away the gun in disgust in the second-to-last issue of City at War.

Some of the main plot points of Mirage were disturbing in general. Splinter training the Turtles to be his mini assassins, and the Turtles killing and killing even when they thought it was wrong, as in City at War.

Yeah, I was surprised a TMNT show was willing to "go there", even though in the back of my mind I knew there had to be a catch, and there was. But as far as he knew, Leo totally cut his head off and killed him, and even though I don't want him to be a cold-blooded murderer, the fact that he'll go there if he has to makes sense for his character and showed he could be every bit as "bad-ass" as Raph or anyone else.

Well, my knowledge of Archie is still growing but I have read some of them. Personally, I found the torture of Michelangelo by the government agent to be darker than I was used to, though I did like that it gave Leonardo and Donatello a chance to charge in and kick some tail around, reminding me again why I think Donatello's anger can be scarier than Raphael's. Plus, Leonardo was always the calm one to me in the old series so seeing real anger on his face was awesome. It still remains one of my favorite comic book moments. All the other Archie moments I would list under here have pretty much been covered: Raphael shooting Verminator, the cross with Hitler...

As for the cartoon itself, I feel like I'm echoing the rest of the crowd when I mention Baxter Stockman and more specifically, the way he slowly disintegrated mentally as the series went. 2k3 may have deteriorated physically but at least he kept his mind intact, for the most part, while Fred Wolf Baxter slowly lost his intelligence and his sanity.

Comparing him at his first appearance and then his last appearance really is sad. It actually was an interesting writing angle though; it oddly reminds me of slowly losing someone to dementia (in a way) and that is speaking from first hand experience. Compared to the other villains, I found Baxter, in the Fred Wolf series at least, to be one I could sympathize with and really felt for his plight. I always hoped he would get a happy ending honestly.

Then there's the explosion of the Channel 6 building. while not necessarily disturbing or as dark as some of the other events, I think the shock factor is really what drove it home for me. Leonardo's response is still one of my favorite lines from him: "You miserable maggot" and Clarke's delivery of that line is awesome. I do remember my entire viewpoint of the series changing at that point. Watching April become more and more distant just added to it. Apparently, I am one of the few who likes the Red Sky series.

As for 2k3 series, well, honestly, a lot of the episodes pushed the limit of what they could get away with. "Darkness Within" was pretty creepy, especially at the beginning. The references, the skeletons, just the unknown, I found very both intriguing and dark. It reminded me of the old horror games I used to play as a kid back at the beginning of the 90s, especially "Alone in the Dark' which I guess had a great deal of influence from Lovecraft as well. I would have liked to see another episode to resolve this but it was awesome for what it was.

SAINW is an obvious choice but I actually read a pretty good fanfiction based off of Mikey's reaction to his dimension that got me thinking: he pretty much came up with the idea to kill his father. That's...pretty intense actually. Obviously, the cartoon did not focus on that but it's an intriguing concept to think about.

All I can think of at the moment. I need to get some more Archie and read some Mirage at some point...

I found Same as it never was and Good Genes arc fairly disturbing.

First off, in Same as it Never Was, Donnie is sent to a future where he had some how disappeared 30 years previous and all his brothers are broken and maimed in the countless battles they fought against Shredder all those years.

And then his bro's are essentially all killed in front of him. And the worst part is he largely moves on as though nothing happened. Dude...you just saw your family killed in front of you. There is no way you can just act like nothing happened even if you do see them alive and whole again moments later. You literally have to turn to Fanfiction for an aftermath of that.

And Good Genes arc, Donnie is turned into a monster. The most disturbing part being the moment where Leo has the tranquilizer gun and is shooting his own brother over and over again. That had to be heart breaking for him to do.

I actually find the concept of the mousers pretty disturbing.
At least when you see them in the comics chewing on rats. Or on the turtles.
They're literally chopping, chewing and grinding them.

And a lot in the Image comics was pretty disturbing. Isn't that part of the reason why Volume 3 isn't considered canon anymore? I find it pretty disturbing when Donatellos' shell is smashed all over the concrete. Especially considering how a shell is connected to a turtle. Also, he was just lying there, realizing he was paralyzed.

People tend to not find anything creepy with comics or cartoons because... They're comics and cartoons. But as soon as you add some more realistic graphics to a common cartoon concept it is looked at more seriously.

Pterobat
09-07-2013, 07:42 PM
I don't know...I likes me some Baxter Stockman, but I prefer to make a distinction between the different types of disturbing. "Disturbing if you sit and think about it" versus an immediate "WHOA, that's creepy!" The second thing has a lot more punch, and sounds like what we're looking for.

So it's hard to actually find something like that in the OT. All the Adam West Batman-ish traps and slapstick, while technically violent, aren't the same as straight-up "holy crap!" moments which push the boundaries of what you thought cartoons could do. Though I think Krang wanting to murder Baxter in cold blood is still surprising for a show like that.

"Insane in the Membrane" is still tops when it comes to creepy stuff in TMNT cartoons. I suppose one's choice of those things depends on how much you care about the characters being focused on. I found SAINW to be the cliched cartoon "bad future" and I couldn't get invested in it, while IitM brought to the surface a lot of things about Baxter's character that we hadn't seen until that point, as well as being so explicitly gory.

I've seen a lot of fanart around that depicts Donnie as a psychopathic mad scientist, most famously in the fan comic TMNT Gaiden. I came upon it so often I wondered if the idea had been inspired by past comics. I guess I have my answer now. I also recall people mentioning how Donnie's other comic incarnations were very hateful and bitter towards humanity; a far cry from the gentle-natured Donatello from the 2003 series.

Now that I think about it, his darker side seems to be hinted at in the Nick series, with his stalkerish behaviour towards April. Brrr.

Yah...I'm a mom too. I have an almost 4 yo...so about the age that they say Nano acts (3), so I cannot help but feel bad for him...at least he turns out ok later on.

And even the hardened criminal, his "daddy" who exploited him for his own greed eventually ends up feeling guilty, realizing he didn't appreciate the only being who cared for him until he was destroyed. Heavy stuff.

Powder
05-08-2014, 03:48 PM
I wouldn't say he's hateful, just kind of a loner in some respects. As for Gaiden, I believe that fan-comic predates the storyarc in which it was revealed Donnie had secret science projects.

Jumping back to Powder's original post there, I think he may be misremembering parts of the Brain Thief mini-series, unless he's referring to some other event.

Dontello fights a sentient bit of Baxter's cyborg body that assimilates cockroaches, and, later, Don is forced to sacrifice a dog to it in order to get it to take on its form (where he solves the problem by telling it to "stay" interminably in a blocked-off part of the sewers). He shows a lot of distress over that last part.

The Baxter thing is absolutely messed up, though, and is portrayed as such.

I think Baxter's mutation in 2k12 is pretty disturbing and twisted. :D

He's defenseless with a mutagen collar around his neck, and can't do anything about it. Watch the mini canisters breaks and he whimpers and groans helplessly in the dark, alone. The way he cries, clasping his face with his palm in the final scene is really sad and sympathetic.

Yeah. Exactly. Is it wrong that I felt Laird was lashing out at the fans with this? It was so pointless and, well awful to treat a character this way.

There are a few preceding pages of Mikey being interrogated, but you can get the gist from these: nothing is shown on-panel, but the pain he's in and the ruthlessness of the work is pretty clear.

I was only able to read part of this story ark... Wish I could have read the whole thing.... I loved every page I did get to read... I don't guess there is any place online where these can be read is there?

Rocksteady/Bebop try to shoot April/Irma/Vernon out the Channel 6 window about 10 stories up.

Krang attempting to butcher up Splinter and April in the same episode before Irma shot the robot body in the back.

Both Shredder and Krang attempting to drain the life force from the Turtles after Dregg hooked them up to that life force draining machine in the episode The Power of Three.

The Archie Comics issue where future Raph loses an eye in a underwater(?) fight with Armaggon. *forgot the issue number since it's been years since I read said issue.* I remembered that part.

The test subject in Of Rats and Men (dear gosh...)
Some of the mutations like Mr. O'Neil and Snakeweed
The Kraang sadistically about to kill April just to obtain her DNA when they could have done it without taking her life (the little bastards)
Times in the OT when a character could have fallen to their deaths or drowned
The fact that Karai could have killed her own father, and without realizing it in the 2k12 series
Shredder's plan to mutate the turtles into snakes to see their father and mentor as only prey, and when it backfires and mutates Karai instead. Especially since Shredder is just as distressed as Splinter when it happens.
When Casey nearly got crushed to death by rubble AFTER escaping by the skin of his nose from being blown up with the building in Newtralized
Timothy's mutation...poor doofus...
Shredder's burnt face

When thinking of the last episode, I thought it was kind of disturbing, when April and Irma were running from the Foot and hid in the alley, the foot thought they were hiding in the dumpster, and without even looking, began to stab the bags in the dumpster with their swords. The whole scene actually reminded me of Lord of the Rings, Fellowship, when the Ringwraiths came into the Hobbit's room, and then began to stab the beds, thinking the Hobbits were sleeping in them. Either way, makes me wonder if the foot bots have done this before, with successful results.

"Michelangelo's Birthday" is a pretty dumb episode overall, but Shredder is especially twisted in this episode. Strapping Mikey into his flush-o-matic torture device is strangely hilarious and disturbing all at the same time. His bravado about his dirty deed when he makes a deal with the other three turtles to give him a ride is quite unsettling, and the whole episode concludes him him basically turning three of the turtles into brain dead balloons. I mean... Shredder finally wins! The only thing that saves the turtles from a demeaning fate worse than death is the ridiculous plot resolution conceived by Bill Wolf & Eliot Daro.

Yeah, Shreeka's incident was interesting and a change after the goofiness of previous seasons. As for Splinter, they had it coming after their remarks about being overworked (and even went back to after "The Big Blowout"), though he really gave it to them under the Rat King's control a few episodes later.

I will throw some suggestions out there, although to be fair I'm sure I could think of plenty more. These aren't all specific moments, some are general musings on characters and the recurring themes in their personalities.

Haven't read the entire thread because I'm just too out of it for that, but I will repeat the point I made in the other thread. It isn't disturbing per se, but I find it uncomfortable to watch Raph lunge AT A GUY WITH BLADES ALL OVER HIM in the final fight against Shredder in the original film. Yes, this goes on in the comics too, it goes on in all iterations, carelessness and bravery is a staple of martial arts films. And it's Raph - he's emotional and acts before thinking. But he tries to fly kick a guy with blades on various parts of his body. He could have been cut to ribbons.

I also find it somewhat disturbing to see a "government agent" almost salivating over the prospect of dissecting mutant curiosities when Bishop captures them originally in 2k3.

Biggest thing that got to me in Mirage was Gabrielle's death, and the way that Casey's happiness (which he'd already struggled for) was absolutely ripped away from him. Like he was given a second chance and then - out of the blue - his wife dies in childbirth. And he's left in a doctor's office to just ponder it. Yes, this sort of thing happens all the time in reality but seeing it on the page just got to me. To be fair he did get Shadow out of it, but that was probably no consolation in the immediate aftermath.

In the original show, there's something seriously fvcked up about the way some human characters are horribly mutated yet don't even seem to show signs of missing their humanity. The likes of Bebop & Rocksteady generally don't seen to realise that they were once human and have lost that. Mutagen Man and Baxter pine for their lost humanity (and the former gets it, ending up better looking), so they're more believable.

In 2k7, the fact that Splinter seems to think it's acceptable to send Leo into the jungle and then give him a medal when he comes home is wacky. No wonder Raph hit the roof - the rest of them stayed behind and faced what was going on in NY, whereas Leo goes away to be a vigilante in Central America (no different to Raph, then, just doing it in another country) and Splinter rewards him for it. The same Splinter who frowns on Raph when he learns he's Nightwatcher.

The fact that, deep down, Donnie probably thinks about what might have been is also quite upsetting. Not so much in the beginning of Mirage (where's he's depicted as really smart but it isn't over the top), but certainly in other iterations, he's a guy who's smarter and more knowledgeable than practically any living being ever to exist. His genius would seriously change the planet as we know it. If he was human his intellect would be celebrated to levels even Einstein could only dream of. Instead he's forced to live in the sewers like a leper, simply because humans would be scared by him. He sometimes saves the world but the humans who benefit don't even know it.This is a guy who rarely outwardly shows signs of this remorse (although we see signs of this resentment towards humanity in FW) but given how smart he is you can be sure it's there. Of everyone in the franchise, Donnie is the biggest case of "what might have been".

The fact that, in 2k3, they smack Mikey on the head and constantly berate him, including sensei. Really irritates me and is probably a factor in his almost sociopathic behaviour in later seasons.

What Shredder does to Leo in the City Fall arc of IDW is some of the most disturbing stuff you'll ever see happen to a sentient being. Basically robbing the guy of his mind, brainwashing him using mystic arts and fvcking with his head to the extent he doesn't even know who his family are and he keeps having visions of his mother, who died centuries ago.

Yeah, that topic has been debated but not enough given how controversial is is. It's truly screwed up.

I can't say he's twisted for eating the rats in City At War. He basically had no option, and he'd held out as long as he could. With the Rat King's persuasion as well as sensei's insatiable hunger he just broke. Personally I think most people would have broken way before he did.

That's true but him hallucinating that Rat King was talking to him before finding his rotted corpse did not help the fact.

It would be interesting if in the next adaptation, that Master Splinter was written to be more like a anti-hero and while the Shredder is chaotic neutral or morally ambitious. It give the entire show such gray tone. I would really love to see that done.

True, but Splinter wasn't to know that. He was so spaced that Rat King was real in his eyes, rather than a figment of his imagination.

I'm assuming you meant to type 'morally ambiguous'. A morally ambiguous Splinter would be great. Although going by your annoyance in that earlier post I guess you could say he was morally ambiguous in Mirage - teaching young kids how to live but at the same time training them for a revenge mission. I guess in your eyes he wasn't morally unambiguous, but a straight up sociopath.

Edit: I misread what you wrote. You meant a more morally ambiguous Shredder, I think. Well, either way, a Splinter who flirts the dubious line between what should and possibly should not be crossed would be fantastic.

Actually to me the Mirage Splinter was subtle when it came to that but I want there be moments when the turtles themselves are questioning his moral compass.

Maybe for once, their beginning of independence/coming or age won't come with Splinter's death but instead it will come from standing up to him and calling him out on his bull ****. Possibly even moving out and finding a new purpose that will give their lives' meaning.

I am not saying the turtles have to disown their master but more like for them say "Sensei, I'm a man and I need make my own decisions despite your own misgivings, okay?"

Bebop and Rocksteady liked being mutants, which is probably why they didn't care. Remember in the ep Krang gives them a hologram to make them look like their human selves again, they say something like, "Oh its only a hologram, I was worried there for a second." because they don't want to be humans again.

Besides I always figured Bebop/Rocksteady's "junk" was still humanoid in their lower regions. I mean the whole bottom torso of their body resembles human legs and pelvis except with animal skin.

That's true. They put Splinter on a pedestal and sometimes seem afraid to question the guy. This obsequious nature isn't good for them. Raph is the only turtle who ever really questions Splinter, and that's because he's Raph.

True. I was just thinking it was because they were so intellectually impaired that they didn't actually understand what had happened to them. Shredder even makes light of the situation when they're mutated: "you will probably struggle to find a date on Saturday night", or words to that effect.

If their private parts were still unaffected, that's a cruel irony seeing as they would never be able to use them with human females. Sort of like how Joseph Merrick's penis was unaffected by his condition.

While I'm not sure I'd classify this as 'disturbing' (especially not as some of the responses made here), but a bit unsettling even if it wasn't focused that much in the one episode it was featured in.

In The Darkness Within of the 2k3 series, we see signs that for as long as this alien creature has been on Earth. it has been claiming many victims who have answered it's promise of fortune and wealth. And knowing those victims were placed in pods where they live out their worst fears in constant re-loop until death is rather messed up.
