I have not seen this reported yet.Eagle eyed photographers have spotted Whoopi Goldberg on the set of the upcoming film wearing a wig and a jumpsuit. Not hints as to what role she has in the film. Here is the article.

according to the website http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=80563

http://media.comicbookmovie.com/images/users/uploads/20773/whoopibanner9996.jpg

Whoopi Goldberg is Bernadette Thompson, the Editor of Channel 6 and April's Boss in the movie.

"A couple days ago, Whoopi was seen exiting from the set of the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The very talented entertainer, who has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award, had many people scratching their heads as to whom she might be playing. The only possible clues was that she was wearing a large, crazy-haired wig, and a jumpsuit covered up her character's wardrobe.

But today, I was contacted by a source, KrispinWah, who informed me that Whoopi Goldberg ("Ghost") will be playing Bernadette Thompson, an editor at Channel 6 News and more importantly, April O'Neil (Megan Fox) and Vernon Fenwick's (Will Arnett) boss.

Right away, fans of the the popular 1987 animated series should be able to recognize that name... sort of. See, in that series, April O'Neil's boss was Burne Thompson (voiced by Pat Fraley & Townsend Coleman). So, for Michael Bay's TMNT the character will be switching genders, and I'm sure she'll be referred to as Burne/Bern, short for Bernadette. "

what do you think guys, could be true?

...well this is another interesting turn of events. I think it was expected that Burne Thompson would appear since we already had Vernon, and already Irma (with Abby Elliott), but having Whoopi Goldberg possibly playing "Bernadette Thompson"?

...Yeah it's looking like the Channel 6 crew is becoming more and more of the comic relief for the movie with Will Arnett (Vernon), Abby Elliott (Irma), and Whoopi Goldberg ("Bernadette") all having comedic acting backgrounds. This comic relief will probably be needed if the action/fighting scenes are going to be intense, to give the movie a "breather" of sorts.

I wonder if Bernadette will have an equivalent of Tiffany in the movie.

I hope we receive confirmation on who is playing Shredder and any other villains soon.

This is great! :tsmile: I love Whoopi Goldberg! I would've never thought she'd play Burne Thompson though! :tlol: I like the idea. If Lawrence Fishburne can be Perry White... Right? I agree that this film could potentially have great comedy relief with Channel 6, if the people in charge make the right calls.

I kind of doubt "Tiffany" will be in it since she's more of a tertiary character compared to the secondary characters of Vernon, Irma, and Burne. ...But who knows right? :P

....But yeah, if Tiffany was a young 20-something, attractive "hot chick" of Burne's, I'm sure the male equivalent for Bernadette would be some dense-headed, model looking "boy toy" for Whoopi named Tony or Timothy probably. LOL  If this movie is PG-13, it would be a big source of sexual innuendo jokes between Burnadette and Tony/Timothy. ;)

Just when you think you've got ahold of how this movie's going to go, they completely flip the script. I'm ok with this, I've both enjoyed and hated whoopi's work but I can certainly see her making this work.

Hopefully the Channel 6 crew will only have at most 20% of the movie's time, otherwise if it's more than that then the movie might as well be called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... and the Channel 6 News Crew". The channel 6 news crew are secondary characters and should obviously stay that way, otherwise it changes the direction of the movie.

I think the bigger names of Whoopi Goldberg and Will Arnett are a bit too distracting and may be causing us to worry a bit too much. We still have yet to know who is playing all of the villains in this movie, as Agent 86 brought up before, and still clueless of what exactly is occurring in this new movie script.

Didn't the cgi movie attempt this? Patrick Stewart, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chris Evans, Laurence Fishburne etc. Not only is that a fairly well known cast but pretty respectable names too. Yet it didn't seem to have any impact on getting people in or how the judged it.

I'm not saying it would make the movie better, but surely putting famous people in a movie would bring in some of those famous people's fans - IF they actually tell people about it.

In this movie's case, the actors will be in trailers and commercials. The average person wouldn't know who the voice actors in TMNT 2007 were, until hey saw the movie.

TMNT fizzled because no fans wanted a CG movie. (Except me. I was hoping for one, long before TMNT) I talked to plenty of fans who said, "Why didn't they do costumes like the old movies," and just never went to see it. No one saw it as legitimate or real. Just like how all the TMNT fans of old will flock to this new movie, like their childhood favorite is making its return, after completely ignoring the new fantastic cartoon. Supporting casts in action movies are usually comedy based.

Also Whoopi is awesome. I love that old bitch. As far as I'm concerned she adds class to this project. She's usually pretty good in small cameoish roles.

I think the Ninja Turtles brand being at an all time low at the time of release, awful marketing and the movie being a piece of sh*t made it a failure more than anything.

CG animated movies are usually big business....when they're good.

"All time low"? The 4Kids era was on the wane but lets not compare it to the mid to late 90's death throes of the franchise or the attempt to revive it with The Next Mutation.

I'm not really sure that Imagi movie could realisticaly been a big hit. I don't think it really knew its audience or what to shoot for. It was Kevin Munroe's original intention to show you could actualy make a dark , gritty looking movie in cg yet (and in terms of the environments that worked) but also had pressure that the movie had to be ultra kid friendly like other cgi animated movies. It's not like the cgi movie was unsuccessful, it's a big reason why we have a cgi animated series now.

The Bay/Leibesman movie probably has a leg up as it has people with clout with a seeming singular vision. Sadly it looks like that vision is crap.

Uh....huh.

Because Ninja Turtles is known for it's high brow nuanced comedy?

I think its kinda known for action with a pinch of humour. All we've seen so far in the way of action is three of the turtles being pushed around by soldiers in masks while they panic and probably wait for Raph and his new allies April and her wacky friend Vernon to rescue them.

Also didn't the humour of the original movie come from the turtles themselves?

This. Noone watching the movie knew about the 2K3 show or at least heard of it and thought the movie had something to do with it, so it was 'not for them'.

I think the new series was made in CGI DESPITE how 2K7 TMNT did... not because of it.

I guess? The original trilogy had more slapstick than anything else. I think maybe they put all the silly gimmicks in the apartment battle to tone down the fact that the Turtles were getting their shells kicked and that Raph was near death. I think the only time the Turtles got serious and fought for real was when they had the showdown with the Shredder.

TMNT2K7 had more epic fighting... but they forgot that the series is about four Turtles and not just two....

Didn't one of the original press releases for Nickledeon acquiring the franchise cite the recent cgi movie as an example of the TMNT's success/longevity and then talk about the upcoming cgi show?

Also there's quite a bit of similarity between them. The general "look" is similar as is the designs of the humans and the gangly turtles with oversized limbs. It also carries on what now seems a tradition of having the turtles look more unique with different height, builds and facial structures that the movie popularised.

While true many who grew up with the Fred Wolf show and Golden Harvest movies probably felt that the Imagi film was 'not for them' a lot of those same fans probably feel the same way about the current show and while the movie is generating a lot of talk with its questionable casting choices and alien controversies which probably means more asses on seats but a lot of those asses that grew up with the old show will probably walk out wondering what the hell they just watched.

I think I'll take to calling this movie TINO -- Turtles in Name Only.

Did someone really tag this with "talentless hack"? Award winning and lifelong successful career isn't good enough anymore, eh?

Yea... The movie did so well that it never got a sequel even though the ending hinted towards the shredder coming back. The movie basically flopped.

I think the Ninja Turtles brand being at an all time low at the time of release, awful marketing and the movie being a piece of sh*t made it a failure more than anything.

CG animated movies are usually big business....when they're good.

Thank you. Right on point. Someone who knows something.

I thought it was pretty decent but your post goes to show the all star supporting cast didn't affect your opinion in any way.

Well I thought they tried to get more attention by using big name actors, but it didn't pull in any more people to come watch it. Patrick Stewart and Nolan North's voice-acting in the movie were good. But Max Winters was such a dumb character, along with the stone generals and monsters.
TMNT 2007 was NOT dark and gritty. Just the environment. It took itself too seriously and fell short.
I think we should talk about that vision when it comes to completion next year. We'll be able to see soon enough... hopefully.

A sequel was all but inevitable. The only reason it didn't happen is that Mirage and Imagi couldn't agree on the direction it should go and thus let it fall by the wayside.

If they had then it would have happened.

That's actualy my point. While more people may be inclined to watch Megan Fox and co in person as opposed to those who are just voice actors but I don't think people here banking on them to bring in mass amounts of people.

TMNT 2007 was NOT dark and gritty. Just the environment. It took itself too seriously and fell short.

Not really arguing the quality of the end product rather what the director wanted to make vs what he was pressured into doing.

Everything that's been confirmed for this movie points toward it catering to those fans. I don't know why you're so sure they won't be happy.

Baring in mind that it wont be the Fred Wolf series. A lot of people who grew up with something tend to hate on newer versions simply because it isn't what they remembered.

Besides Military-eque Foot and the the very real possibility of Schrader and short probably very different Splinter kind of point that stuff from that '87 show will be more superficial than anything that will please those fans.

TMNT 2007 made plenty of money, considering how inexpensive it was to make.

The Schrader thing would probably be an issue. But Bay and Co. heard that backlash before filming, and even casting. If they still have Schrader, they probably made him more Shredder-y. (Not that I think it would be such a big deal, in the end)

So many people were into TMNT back then, it feels weird to even used the word "fan." Most kids were OT fans. And the people here think way more about this stuff than they do. For most people, OT was about turtles who beat stuff up and make jokes. They fought a brain who teamed up with a ninja. This is not Batman. It's not that serious.

I think when people see their beloved ninja turtles in action, they'll be fighting the evil WhoCares and his army of WhoCares, and they're gonna have a great time, because Turtles.

I kinda hate the idea. It looks like she's there for public reasons like she's part of pop culture rather than for the character. Just goes to show Michael Bay cares less for the Turtles than humans.

Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Whoopi? Let's wait till Michael J Fox, Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy show up next.

Well I'm sure a number of things, such as changing Burne Thompson's race and gender or turning the Foot into a military unit with weird masks would upset OT fans.

Casuals aren't gonna remember Burne, and as long as they see big guns and explosions I don't think they'll care much about the change to the Foot.

all three of those actors you named would not only add a little more credibility to the flick, but class and talent as well. granted murphy hasn't had a hit in ages, but that's cuz of the scripts he chooses. now it's obvious to most people here that you have no imagination, so you won't see it, but either 3 of them would actually be pretty cool.

plus, if those 3 names are the first ones to pop out at you as pop culture icons that would be chosen for random insertion into a popcorn movie to appeal to the mindless masses, then you're laughably out of touch, bruh. this isn't the 80's or early 90's.

Apparently, Whoopi winning not only an Academy Award, but a Grammy Award, Tony Award, and Emmy Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_have_won_Academy,_Emmy,_Grammy, _and_Tony_Awards#Whoopi_Goldberg) don't hold much weight, by that same someone who tagged this thread with "talentless hack".

The 2007 TMNT movie was such a joke. It probably only pulled in Turtles fans, but no else seemed to notice or care. After 14 years from the original movies, that's the best they could come up with? A couple of monsters come to the city and need to be captured? They weren't even in the movie that much. They only decent thing was the Leo-Raph story. It didn't have any impact at all. It was such a forgettable movie. I remember I was trying to convince myself that it was a good Turtles movie when I got out of the theater. It was so cheesy. It took itself too seriously. Fingers crossed for this new movie.

only fault of that movie is the plot. The character interactions voice acting action and the rest is spot on, the stupid video game plot weighed it down...
But it is 100 times better than everything bay is involved in, i just watched transformers to see what all the fuss is about, after seeing that no way this is going to bee any better....

except the cast of spin city complaining about how michaels parkinsons slowed filming down by a factor of 5. but point taken :).

hell, I'd rather have Michael j fox as Splinter at this point. we know he can act and he's short enough :)

I just hope to god they don't include a, "The View" reference to her talkshow. Since she's a news boss I can easily see her saying they're sending someone over to "The View" god I hope not.

All movies become dated when they've been out for 20 years.

THANK YOU!!!

You took the words right out of my mind. Oprah was big then and big years after....no pun intended. Now Vanilla Ice, he's dated.

Now in 2525 BOTH Oprah and SotO may be outdated...and Oprah will still be the more known piece of pop culture.

I agree. I've always found "it's dated" to be a really naive criticism, as if someone is just looking to be cynical and wanting to complain.

Did someone say "Goldberg" Stormshadow? Come on, April's boss is hardcore!

Any movie does become dated, I agree. I was watching The Paper Chase last night and it obivious the timeframe it was made. Things change and set things in a certain era which it was made, even ifi ts a period piece depicting an era beofre that time. Vanilla Ice dates it as much as Prince dates Batman('89) and that is something that was recognized by Tim Burton when Prince was brought in and he was fine with it. I will assume the same was consdiered with Rob Van Winkle.

It was not neccessarily the musician, but a line at Channel Three that caught my attention addressing its date. A coworker, Phil said, "We are looking ahead" April :"Swimsuits of the 90s'". Being made in 1991 it seemed funny and called attention to the date of release as much as the short-lived success of Vanilla Ice.
