View Full Version : New Set Reactions Seem Pretty Good!

So, a few writers had been on the set of the new movie last week, and based on their tweets, their reactions are good!

"Last week spent an hour trying to catch some TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES action outside my building. Today got to spend a whole day on set."

"Those turtles are getting a serious upgrade"

"So I spent all day on the set of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES & apart from LOVING the new look, I can absolutely confirm it will be badass"

"I have to be mega vague, but as a longtime fan of TMNT I was SO happy with what I saw. They're doing it right. Trust."

Spent my day @ the #TMNT set. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans, worry not. Still heroes in a half-shell & #MeganFox is still hot #cowabunga

WHITEWASHED Shredder is something to be excited about? Possible alien Turtles still being in the script is good to these people?

I doubt those people are even big TMNT fans at all, they probably know nothing of what the franchise is about other than their faded memories of the OT from their childhood.

Never in my lifetime would I think we would see a WHITE Shredder as a Colonel instead of a Japanese man in a ninja outfit.

How is Viacom approving of this garbage? Their quality control with IDW and Nick is pretty good, why ruin the movie?

Quick question, how is it just now White Washing when the Shredder has been portrayed by a white man several times? Based on this rationale, you should be angry that he has a white guy's voice in the original movies.

You see a similar thing happening with Splinter, but have mentioned nothing of it.

Voice actors have nothing to do with how a character is shown on-screen. Shredder has been Japanese in every incarnation (except for 4kids, but he was still based on a Japanese man), until now.

I'm really surprised some of you are actually OK with this. A completely unrecognizable take on Shredder that makes him into a white Colonel? Sounds like something out of really bad fanfiction.

But Splinter is a rat, how can you ethnicity-wash anything that isn't even human. Unless they use the Fred Wolf version of Splinter is Hamato Yoshi, I am still pretty sure they won't use Woodburn as Yoshi in flashbacks.

That was my guess. But there is absolutely no reason to hire two actors for one role.

My rationale is that in almost every multi-media incarnation, Splinter is portrayed as having a Japanese accent. It's a longtime thing associated with the character, and they don't seem to be doing it here. CyberCubed is ragging on Fichtner as Shredder because it's different. So is Woodburn as Splinter, but there's nothing to be said about that.

Candy Kappa
06-24-2013, 12:54 AM
Splinter only had a proper Japanese accent when he was actually played by a Japanese man: Mako.

The other times, it was the very generic old master voice. Woodburn could be dubbed as well, just like Shredder was in the first Live-Action movie.

Obviously, Cybercubed is just one of those fans who doesn't like certain change. I can relate to that (e.g. reincarnation in IDW). However, I do agree that he needs to calm down.

Cybercubed - I don't want to repeat this. I doubt Kevin Eastman would lie to his fans. Specifically, someone asked, "Are the turtles going to be aliens in this film?" He said, "No," and everyone applauded. Eastman does not seem like a dishonest man. Are there things he may like that some won't? Absolutely. However, stop bringing up this alien origin. It's not going to happen. They have already fixed that already. Forget the leaked script. That was yesterday. Today, it may be something entirely different. Besides, Casey Jones was in the script. Doesn't look like he'll be in the film now.

And please don't worry about Shredder. I don't care if his skin will be blue or purple. As long as he can play the part, it will all be fine.

Cubed deserves the flack he gets, but honestly, when are you punks going to learn to just ignore the guy and move on. Right now, you're comments are just as annoying as his.

Here's the pattern:

A) Cubed posts a complaint
B) Somebody complains about Cubed
C) Cubed keeps complaining, now fueled by complaints about the complaining
D) Re-do steps A to C

It's a broken record of utter stupidity and childish behavior, one comment after another, and, yes, that includes all of the replies to Cubed's comments as well.

And as for Cubed, when are you going to learn just to tell everyone where they can go and move on? You're not going to like this movie. It's not the end of the series. It's just a dumb movie. So, hey, now you won't have to spend $13 to see the ridiculous movie (and, no, a positive set visit doesn't equal a great movie, nor does it negate some of the funky casting, and color aside, while Fichtner is a talented actor, he's an odd casting choice for Shredder -- reminds me of Joseph Gordon Levitt playing the Cobra Commander in that retarded GI Joe movie). Another series that had a bad movie -- Batman, and after that craptastic blunder that was Batman & Robin, the series came back, better than ever with Batman Begins. James Bond did the same after the equally terrible Die Another Day.

Either way, 90% of most threads are now more about the People VS. CyberCubed than they are the discussion itself, because one negative opinion begats 5 snarky comments. It just gets boring. And, it's not going to stop until people learn to just ignore it like a fart in the wind. If you don't like what a person says, when you see their name, just move on past it. Instead of shooting all the people using "whitewashing" why don't you shoot yourself and all the other naive people on this board. Ugh you guys really have no idea how this industry works do you?

Do some research on how these people are treated on set visits. They are wined and dined and taken skiing and put up in the fanciest 5 star rooms. They spend a few hours on set then are shuttled off to a dark room where the director and producer licks their buttholes for a few hours. They are shown some sizzle reel, production art etc that they aren't allowed to talk about (but not because it is anything important to the film. Its just to make the journalists feel important). Then they get driven around the sight see/do whatever they want on the production's dime. Then in the middle of doing something fun or eating a delicious meal someone comes around with a piece of paper asking what they think about the film. Hopefully the critic or journalist will have had a good time and will say something great about the film. But it is all 100% ********.

a ton was written, podcasted, and talked about this subject back when John Carter came out and critics and journalists where given free tv's, vacations, etc during set visits and being whisked away to secluded resorts for early critics screenings.

Do you know what a re-write is? Fichtner has confirmed he is THE SHREDDER not Colonel Schrader. Just because the Foot has a military type look, doesn't exactly spell out Schrader. You can play like a broken record all day, it won't change the fact that Fichtner is white and is playing The Shredder. Move on. Maybe start complaining about Danny Woodburn being white also?

Yes, but Schrader IS Shredder in the script we've seen. It's kinda like the Kraang being an analogue THE Krang in the Nick series.

By saying he's Shredder in this movie doesn't negate that he could BE Schrader, because Schrader, for all intents and purposes in the PD movie universe, IS THE SHREDDER. It's all semantics.

The turtles nicknamed Schrader "Shredder" in a similar manner to the turtles naming their enemies in the new show. Schrader was Shredder to the people who okayed that script.

From the looks of everything, that draft is long history. We've seen many things from the set photos and cast photos that negate that leaked draft.

-The Turtles and Splinter were inter-dimensional beings from Dimension X living here on earth. It has been confirmed that this is no longer the case.
-April is actually a reporter. In the leaked draft, she was an intern, who I believe was still in college.
-Vernon was not in the leaked draft.
-Bernadette Thompson was not in the leaked draft.
-So far, Casey, who played the awkward Shia Labeouf role in the leaked draft, has not been cast, or at least his casting has yet to be announced.

It's not long history at all. There's quite a bit from the leaked script which is present. The militaristic Foot, the turtles being captured and dragged into a facility in chains, an SUV chase on a snowy hill.

True there as some different things but already there's too many similarities with that script to say that it's been ditched. Rewritten yes and even then we don't know to what degree. In the context of the story I don't think April being an intern at a TV news service is all that different to being a TV news reporter.

I wonder if by "upgrades" they mean the turtles will be more customized than they have been in the past. You know, more than just the same outfits with different colored bandanas. Like Donatello could have hi-tech goggles on his head or other gadgets on him, utility pouches, etc. Mikey could have skateboarding pads instead of the usual ones. Leo could have bits of more traditional Japanese garments, and so on. Do you think they'll go more basic or do more to visually show their personalities?

To be fair, people have a right to be wary until the film actually comes out, and yes, that IS based on what we know from the leaked script(s) of the past. We know, for a fact, that various studios from 1993 up until now have been ***thisclose*** to putting awful, awful, AWFUL ideas on the big screen for a TMNT film. There have been awful ideas, awful characters, awful scripts, all of which were solicited, approved, and at some stage of being developed before common sense took over, always in the name of "It's just a stupid toy commercial, who cares?". "They", meaning Hollywood, simply DO NOT "get it".

Now, recent development leave some room for optimism, BUT, here's the problem: in the movie-making process, nothing ever completely "goes away". In fact, concept art, costume designs, and entire plotlines from abandoned/rejected scripts often end up making it into films that get made years or decades later, simply because at one point the studio paid money for the work and they don't want to "waste" it. The final film can be almost entirely different from the original ideas presented, but SOME bits almost always show up in the finished film.

Example: Around 2003, J.J. Abrams submitted a wretchedly awful concept/script for a movie to be named "Superman: Flyby" (at least that's the name the concept was approved under). Now, for the most part, it was awful in the way the leaked TMNT script was awful, and for a lot of the same reasons, while at the same time, trying earnestly to "do it right" and not realizing how bad some of the changes were going to piss everyone off. The movie didn't get made, and some of the stupider elements (like Krypton never being destroyed and Lex Luthor being a Kryptonian living on Earth disguised as an X-Files agent) were seemingly trashed, but many, MANY other bits of the script ended up in the two Superman films we DID get since then. Examples include:
-"Superman Returns", Superman's "listening post" in space at the top of the world was directly lifted from "Flyby's" script.
-In "Returns", a montage of scenes featuring Superman saving people all over the world in one night was, again, directly lifted and adapted from the Abrams script.
-"Man of Steel", the costume is almost identical to 2003 concept art for the never-made Abrams film, including no red trunks, the weird orb/belt buckle and "ribcage" piping, and the S-shield design.
-The entire plot of "Man of Steel" - specifically, Superman battling on Earth against evil Kryptonians who have hunted him down, and referencing the possibility of Kal-El somehow "saving" Krypton - was so heavily lifted from the Abrams script (seriously, swap "Zod" for "Kryptonian Luthor" and it's the same plot), some fans were scared to death Krypton wouldn't actually explode in MoS, until it actually did and everyone relaxed for the rest of the film.

Point being, they had a bad script for a movie that never got made, but they were able to take some of the better ideas and use them in two good movies, rather than just get rid of the entire script. Because they never completely get rid of anything, because they paid for it and they'll use it if they can (Hell, even producer Jon Peters' lousy "giant robot spider" from his idea for a Superman reboot eventually made it into "Wild Wild West", just because Peters loved the stupid idea and refused to see it NOT done somewhere).

Now, the fact that "Flyby" was a bad script but its ideas ended up in two good movies proves you CAN fix things along the way. BUT, it's naive to think Hollywood would ever approach TMNT with a reverence or care approaching that of Superman (and look how many times they almost screwed THAT up!), so I think TMNT fans have a right to be cautious until the film comes out. We've proven that no, a bad early script does not mean the movie HAS to be bad. BUT, it means these awful earlier ideas are what the studio thinks are "good ideas", and it takes a lot to get them to change their minds.

In the case of TMNT, just like "Flyby", we can already see a lot of stuff from the aborted script in the final product. They've obviously fixed a lot since then, but I'm staying in the "cautiously optimistic" camp until I actually see the finished film. They really, really liked the idea of Col. Schrader and alien Turtles, and totally said "C'mon, what's the big deal?" for like, A YEAR before changing course even a little bit. So I feel anyone who isn't sold yet is simply being pragmatic. They may not screw the entire project, but yet, they still may.

Its things like that when writers decide to do there own thing and go against the source material. Sometimes it works, Sometimes it doesn't

I'm still pretty much expecting the outcome of the 'alien turtles' plot, even if they've trashed the alien turtles idea, because it was essentially the direction of the franchise. And I'd be cool with it, because the sci-fi side of TMNT has never made it into the films...

The problem with that idea is, The people who would be exposed to the Turtles for the first time, will get the wrong impression when they see the animated series and its nothing like the movie.

I'm talking about the whole thing about the Turtles being aliens instead of Mutants. If Kids were to see that in the movie then watch the show for the first time, They'll complain that they aren't aliens.

With Michael Bay saying, plainly, that the ooze transformed the turtles, I think the alien origin is out. But I would guess that the destiny that went along with it would be somehow retained. I feel like whatever ideas they had for the sequels hinged on it. But it's all guesswork.

I just hope they still kept the origin of the Ooze being of alien origin like the original comics.

That's wrong. The flyby suit concepts had zero piping, an angular chest shield, and the entire belt was made of weird orbs.

Doesn't look to much like Man of Steel to me.

Not an inherently original idea. Man of Steel probably took from the countless amount of stories that sound like this n the comments.

The only thing way past overdue is you learning the difference between 'your' & 'you're'.

I think giving Donnie a bag of gear/gadgets would be very fitting. Honestly, do you think Donnie wouldn't carry a bag of gadgets?

Depends on the situation. If he's actually doing ninja things, then probably not... jingle-jangling doodads in some kind of pouch or backpack would be pretty detrimental to sneaking around.

Those costumes were great, they are STILL the best Turtles we've seen so far in a movie. A lot of people think those suits are among the best costumes ever used in cinema's history. I wouldn't complain about them using those same costumes for the new movie even if I'm aware modern day CGI can obtain similar results.

I've seen that picture but was referring to a different one from around the same time that had a different shield. The shield looked more like a cross between MoS and the one they kept trying to use for the Burton movie. It also only showed the front, so the entire "belt" wasn't visible. I'm not sure which picture came first. But they both look a lot like the MoS suit to me, a few minor changes aside, other than the fact they changed the texturing to look like chainmail in the finished movie. The concept art and the MoS costume have more in common with each other than either does with the real costume, most of the changes are in the same vein. It shows exactly what style the studio wanted for the look 10 years before they actually got their way with MoS.

It WAS pretty similar, actually. I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be more spider-like or some kind of electric-glowing space-octopus.

And yes, most objective people agree "Returns" was good. A little slow, in spots, is really the worst thing about it.

When it happened I just had visions of Kevin Smith ranting about "The mechanical spider" haha.

Superman Returns was a bit of a "hot mess" in my opinion. Superman never really has a fight with anybody. He spends the entire movie either standing still, lifting heavier and heavier things, getting his butt kicked, or spying on his ex-girlfriend that he knocked up and made her forget they ever had sex, so she doesn't know who the father is. Also, it pretty much makes kryptonite pointless, because if an ENTIRE MOUNTAIN of it won't kill him, NOTHING ever really will. Hard to take that small rock of it as a serious threat when he can survive a whole mountain of the stuff...

Hard to take that small rock of it as a serious threat when he can survive a whole mountain of the stuff...I feel like Superman is the super hero who can carry a story without fighting anyone, since Superman was Superman before supervillains were really a thing.

I'm no comic expert, but if you look at Superman's physically powerful villains, the ones he goes toe-to-toe with in a fight, the lions' share of them seem to pop up in the 60s or later, when other superheros were becoming popular, and Stan Lee was on a roll. It seems like somebody said, "We need to make Superman the underdog, sometimes. He needs to be knocked to his knees and bleed from his face, because that's what's cool now." I mean that it used to be cool for Superman to just save the day. Saving people is more intrinsically Superman than beating up super villains.

Yeah, he'd fight giant robots or monsters, and fantastical things like that, back in the day. But this idea of a super hero struggling to beat up another man who rivals his strength seems to be more of a new-school concept.

To me, it seems, when people say that Superman needs to fight someone in order for a movie to be good, a part of Superman is tossed away...

As far as the kryptonite, Superman took in a big helping of sunlight before lifting the rock, and it still almost killed him. It's a stretch, but I don't think it's unfair. The precedent with Superman is that he will always be as strong as he needs to be, because he's Superman. But maybe that's an old-school concept, too...

Yeah, it honestly didn't bother me there weren't any "proper" fight scenes in SR; there weren't in the first Reeve movie, either, and Superman hardly "needs" fight scenes to tell a good story. General opinion is, the new movie had too many.

And upon seeing "Returns" I immediately perceived it as the "New Krypton" land mass was only partially made up of Kryptonite; the entirety was made up of various parts Kryptonite, water, the Sunstone Crystal, and ice. I imagined that the strength of the Kryptonite was heavily diluted and impure. That, combined with Superman getting a "boost" from the solar energy he absorbed, was how I understood his ability to bring New Krypton into orbit. Granted, I probably read a few more Superman comics than some, so I'm sure I've seen a similar story elsewhere, and that's probably why it made more sense to me than to some people. It may seem excessive, but it's not implausible for the character. :)
