Here we'll post, and discuss, set images from the new film.

First off, the Turtle's Lair under construction!

http://wpc.556e.edgecastcdn.net/80556E/img.site/PHOc6beLvJX2RV_1_m.jpg

It is being decorated with training equipment, hammocks for the turtles to sleep on, and quite a few lava lamps. When construction and decoration is complete, this hideaway will resemble the room of a typical teenager.

It'll probably get enhanced with CGI, Usually these movie sets will have just a small section and then the rest are painted in CGI

I feel like this one, for the most part, won't be. It'll probably have a roof. Entrances will be green screened, but I don't think much else.

thank god theyre going back to practical sets!!in this motion capture suits technology piece I love for them to incorporate the golden days of human capabillities!!!booyakashaaaaa!!!;)
and dont worry, the artists working on this kind of craft are masters in their field.
they know what they're doing.often walls look really awkward in broad normal day light but then they are crafted to look incredible in the right lighting or smoke etc...now keep in mind that we are looking here at a picture showing how a set is BUILD, its not the end result, boys...

the look of the lair makes me excited!!!a part of me(however unlikely the event may be) would faint when we would get a scene, camera moving throught the empty sewer tunnels and its dark and we hear the game boy music from that sewer stage in the classic game 'fall of the foot clan'!!;)...I always admired that little music so much, feel its weird and strong and so fits perfectly the whole concept of the tmnt;)

Actually, contrary to popular belief, Hollywood still uses plenty of sets and miniatures. Even George Lucas used quite a bit in the prequels, which are often criticized for having not using miniatures and sets (those films are blunders because of the writing, acting, and directing, not the effects). For example, the lava planet (Mustafar, I think?) and the fight sequence that took place there was comprised of various model shots, including the lava itself, which was created using roughly the same formula used for the movie Volcano. They cleaned it up using digital touch ups, altering the lighting a little, and by compositing in sparks and splashes from real larva. (As far as effects go for those films, I never really liked the fact that all of the Clonetroopers were completely CGI, even for close up shots of Temeura Morrison standing there with his helmet off.)

My favorite though was the arctic fortress in Inception. It was a miniature, placed next to a parking complex, I believe, and if I recall, it was at least 2-3 stories high. I think in actuality, the reason why people don't know that miniatures are still used is because Hollywood has gotten better at them, making them bigger. Hell, a great portion of the Tumbler chase sequence through the under-section of Gotham in The Dark Knight was done with miniatures, and you can barely even tell, if at all.

Decent, love seeing what a set looks like when being built, and then the finished product.

Whilst on the subject, my favourite set of all time is the Space Jockey set from Alien.

(This post isn't just targeted at you just a broad statement to every one complaining about shell size head size, body shape, height, and mostly cosmetic things.)**
You do realize they can adjust that in post right? Same with the shell size and every thing else, and relatively easily. These complaints are funny it like this is exactly what were going to see. have you seen BTS stuff for any movie look next to nothing like the final product once everything is put together

People need to just remember the special effects used in the captain America movie where Chris Evans had to be scaled way down to be the skinny Steve Rogers. It looked great. If they can do this through cgi, then I have no worries about the turtles in terms of scale.

I don't think they ever said it was going to be grounded. I think what you're referring is something people on here were saying when that one draft leaked a while back, something about it being more realistic to use "call of duty rejects" than ninjas for the foot clan. That was more or less members rationalizing the decision, not the filmmakers defending it.

Dead at that Turtle van/battleshell/party wagon whatever.

The idea of them having a vehicle to get around or even Don tricking it out for battle isn't a bad one but to look like that. In a movie you'd want something that could at least somewhat pass as a real vehicle.

I hope to god this something like Cowabunga Carl van were it has some purpose to look outlandish but I doubt it.

I know people make fun of fans that complain about everything but will go see the first day anyway but I'm almost at done with this. I know no one cares about one fan but unless we start seeing something that this wont be a total camp fest that would make the Next Mutation look like high class entertainment that's one less ticket sale for them sadly much as I love the franchise.

Honestly, I've decided to stop worrying about this movie being anything other than a throwback to the Fred Wolf series. While I prefer Mirage and the Nick version, I can't deny that what they're making now seems like the kind of movie I wanted when I was 6. I think having the Turtle Van/Party Wagon is pretty cool.

Its not the Turtles I know, it's the one they think they can sell tickets with. Like it or not, it's what you get, it's still better than any Kickstarter funded fanfic we'd ever get.

The problem with set photos is that they only tell you what scenes look like to the naked eye when they are being filmed, which destroys the illusion of "movie magic." You don't get the context of how the processes (lighting, cinematography, effects, color correction, etc.) come together.

They also tell you far too much than you really need to know about a film that doesn't come out until next year. There's a good chance that half, if not more, of everyone here will know more than enough, maybe even every single moment in the film, to know whether they would like the film or not, then go see it, and complain about hating it, as if they didn't already know what they were getting into. All the while, another major percentage will see the movie, despite knowing every single scene and and every single line of dialogue, and will then complain about how predictable the film was. The latter group always irritates me the most.

Whoah, whoah, whoah! Back the horse up, man. Clearly you missed the part where I called The Dark Knight "well-made." The first sentence of your post is the exact point I was trying to make.

I wasn't criticizing the film, or its serious nature; it was this implied notion that films that take themselves more seriously are somehow "pretentious" and that only films for "dum dums" can be fun. However, "well-made" and "thought-provoking" aren't the same thing, either. The Dark Knight, like you said, is well-crafted, from a technical point of view, and a favorite of mine, but, especially in the lousy closing moments of the film, it does a lot of the thinking for you, literally telling you the themes of the movie in the dialogue. (A true thought-provoking film, IMO, will leave this material as subtext, and allow the audience to pick it up for themselves. You're a filmmaker, so you might be familiar with the saying "it's better to show it than to say it.") The Dark Knight isn't what I would call "a thinking man's movie" but it is a film that you can approach at your own level, without turning your mind off, and easily enjoy. And, that's the kind of TMNT I would to see. I hope people don't take that too seriously, as I'm not saying I'm wanting the Chris Nolan version of TMNT, but just a TMNT film that I can approach without having to turn my brain off to enjoy, and I think that's what some of the others were trying to get at.

Except fiction can't really work without a certain degree of realism. If something happens to a character we know they have to have some kind of conequence for it to matter.

Different genres of fiction rely or work better with different degrees of realism. I don't think it's out of the question for something like a movie which is for an older and broader audience to take a somewhat more realistic approach than a childrens cartoon.

Yeah, hard to beleive some of us actually like light-hearted, wholesome, popcorn fun over dark, angsty, and brooding bulls*it that is completly overplayed in today's market isnt it?

Levity is part of the turtles, their personalities are a big part of that. I don't see why a movie can't strike the correct balance and not be a complete schlockfest. Isn't that the reason why the '87 show is best remembered from early seasons before it became too comedic?

I know no one said that about that works on the movie. It is implied by the humans who look like soldiers being the foot clan.

I have no problem if this movie is going the Fred Wolf direction. However, if they're selling the nostalgia factor. The foot should look like they did in the toon.

Personally, I wouldn't mind see something that is similar to the original movie, but updated. Instead of mixing the Mirage story, and Fred Wolf toon, they could mix the IDW series, and Nick toon.

But honestly, I would kill to see the Mirage or IDW series on the big screen.

I agree, and would add that "realism" is a term that is used rather loosely in films. There is a certain level of believability that should be achieved or at least attempted. You can get away with a lot in films -- yes, even films with four, walking, talking turtles -- as long as it seems there are some levels of logic and physics.

Now, granted, the thing that sparked all of this was the van, and that is the least of my concern. I don't want a complete goof-fest (or crapfest) like the GI Joe movies or the latter two Transformer films.

Uh, OK? I never said there wasn't, so what's your point?

Ditto to the above. I'd like something fun and a little light-hearted, but still able to be taken somewhat seriously. Considering how well the cartoons have all gone down without sticking to any of those things, I don't see why a movie should.

Then there's the simple fact the GI Joe flicks and Transformers make a s*itload of money anyway, so who cares what a piddling minority of butthurt "older guard fans" think when the general public consumes all the ice cream while the older fans sulk over their raspberry cones?

Levity is part of the turtles, their personalities are a big part of that. I don't see why a movie can't strike the correct balance and not be a complete schlockfest. Isn't that the reason why the '87 show is best remembered from early seasons before it became too comedic?

Except the '87 show was still perfectly fine even when it became too comedic. I can go back and rewatch every season, even the red sky era, very easily, more so than the 4Kids show and certaingly more times than the Nick show.

I'm being a realist and batting for the winning formula everybody in the general consensus WANTS to see while everyone else is batting for something that will ALWAYS and FOREVER be NICHE.

The Nick show is a blend of seriousness and goofball humor, but the zanyness is evidently more prevailant over the serious aspects, which has worked out fine for the show, nobody has a problem with that despite the clear high-camp quality, so what is it about the movie that gets on everybody's goat? Hypocrisy at it's finest.

There are plenty of us here who love the OT, but there is a difference between something that is lovably & intentionally goofy for the right reasons, and something that misses the mark completely and becomes nothing more than fodder to facepalm at. It's not so much the material they use but how they use it. People who want to see Fred Wolf influence want to see it done justice.

I suppose I'm just not seeing the "lack of concern" from all I'm seeing of this flick, a lot of it hits the right beats with me because that's often how it worked in the older 'toon. I don't get what does and does'nt "miss the mark", I don't think any of us can until we actually see the finished product.

I want to see the show done justice, but if it does it's own thing whilst in turn being influenced by aspects of what made the old 'toon great, I won't complain either. All reinterpretations have to go their own way at some point, I don't want anything to be an outright slave to the source, certaingly in the OT's case, being extremly faithful may even prove slightly too expensive in places.

The original movie had a tone that was lighthearted enough to entertain kids yet had a depth and a verisimilitude that made it also entertaining for adults and non-fans as well. That's honestly more the style I'd want to see a TMNT film done in. I know the cartoon is what springs to mind first in most people's general idea of TMNT, and I can understand wanting to make a movie that caters to that, but at the same time, I don't think a TMNT movie in that cartoon style will or even can win over any non-fans. And I think that's kind of a shame.

If they push the silliness too far, they may be more faithful to the cartoon's style, but anyone who doesn't already "get it" is just going to think it's a stupid movie and that TMNT fans, especially older ones, are idiots for being emotionally invested into something so (seemingly) juvenile. No, TMNT doesn't *have* to be more than "just a silly kids property", but it CAN be more, and I think it's a missed opportunity whenever people choose to explore it JUST as that. Seeing it stripped of any depth and reduced to an empty toy commercial played solely for laughs just seems like a waste.

I don't think they should do TMNT as "Sin City", either, but surely there's a place in the middle...

If it's more like the first Transformers film, it could be really entertaining. Each of its sequels could have been too, but they overstayed their welcome. They really could have hacked off most of Shia's role and almost of the showstopping jokes, that went on and on and on, and most people in the audience wouldn't have cared. People came for robots fighting each other, not a dopey kid and his girl problems.

It's all about an opening weekend and having a brand that sells. There are a lot of people who like the Transformers films, don't get me wrong, but the success of these films are more due to the brand and the advertisement campaign, not the formula. The fact that people like these films at all is irrelevant to the notion that it could easily make money at the box office, simply from having a trailer that shows the goods and the name alone. It's a Friday night, you're going to see a movie, and the newest film is Transformers: Something of the Something, the subtitle doesn't even matter. Robots fighting each other, what else are people going to watch?

Brand recognition is what TMNT will have on its side. With each new incarnation that has come over the years, by and large, TMNT is still consistently popular. It is a huge name. By the time this comes out it will be the first live-action TMNT film in over twenty years. Regardless of any liberties taken to the source material people will watch it come opening weekend. Probably a lot of people, too.

Anyway, when I was taking about tone I meant the look and feel of the film, not the quality.

Since the license plate indicates a SECOND "Shellraiser," I wonder if they have a first one that is more cobbled together and gets destroyed or something. Then they get a hold of a nicer van, or Donnie fixes it up and the fixed up one is considered the "second" one.

That, or it's just an easter egg and "successor" to the one in the current cartoon...

The one they are using just screams TOY and I don't think it looks good even on a goofy level.

That, or it's just an easter egg and "successor" to the one in the current cartoon...

I think this is more probable.

Since the license plate indicates a SECOND "Shellraiser," I wonder if they have a first one that is more cobbled together and gets destroyed or something. Then they get a hold of a nicer van, or Donnie fixes it up and the fixed up one is considered the "second" one.

That, or it's just an easter egg and "successor" to the one in the current cartoon...Or maybe they have two different Shellraisers.

And one's a blimp.

Plus, it will probably have a nifty trailer showcasing a lot of the film's action and probably humor. Brand recognition, familiarity with the franchise, awesome trailer, expectations for over the top action sequences -- even if the film itself is terrible, I don't see how it couldn't sell.

Anyway, when I was taking about tone I meant the look and feel of the film, not the quality.

Now that I'm not so sure. It's a loose approximation, I'm sure, but the look, feel, and style of Transformers is Michael Bay's own personal stamp. He looks to move the camera around in certain ways and he has a specific style of humor.

I still haven't seen any of Liebesman's films outside of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, so I have no idea what his action films are like, but I imagine those would be the films to look at for an idea of what will, at the very least, look like on screen.

Are you seriously saying this on a Ninja Turtle forum?

"I'm a growned up! I like growned up things like blood and cursing! Excuse me, I need to catch the latest episode of a children's cartoon on nickelodeon."

You do understand I'm talking in response to the cartoon, right? I've stated this so many times on here: I don't like the cartoons.

Despite whatever toy selling value this film has, I don't think you can argue that the main demographic here is the 20 something year old casual TMNT fans, & they would probably dig it.

I do not hate the van they have gone with.. I wish it was a little more cobbled together from found material and maybe a little more run down.. if it was up to me it would have been a VW Microbus like April drove in the Mirage comics, converted into something like the OT Partywagon.

Something like this.

You know, that would actually be really cool! I like it!! Too bad they didn't go more that route- but the one they're using is still pretty slick. And yeah, it DOES scream "toy" to me, too, but that's okay- they gotta' make their money SOMEWHERE if the movie bombs!!

So much better. The van itself in the movie isn't bad, it's just so chaotic in color design. But this image have a lot better color control.

I had to look at the photos a second time before I saw that April has the sais tucked into her boots. I'm wondering if that's actually going to be in the movie, or she just got tired of carrying them around. It'd be funny if she was trying to hide a mutant turtle, but has the martial arts weapons in plain sight.

that d be only a mistake on her side and funny if you d asume that people in this new york city have a knowledge of teenage mutant ninja turtles...I dont see that happening;)people of the city wont know about what a tmnt is;)they're still gonna be freaks of nature..

I'd actualy issue the same challenge to you using a pic of the van from the upcoming movie.

Putting aside arguments of "realism" for a minute I don't think that's a design that works that well. At least the van from the toyline and Fred Wolf Show as well the Shellraiser from the current one look battle ready and would be considered cool by young people.

Also a large part of the visual appeal of the turtles is that their kind of low rent. This was especialy prevalant in the old toyline were the vehicles and playsets all looked like they'd been made from parts found in a sewer or garbage dump. It was both silly and kinda made sense given the context of the turtles. This bled though to the movie and following series had their takes on this with varying degrees of seriousness. From the photos we've seen it seems is not present at all in the movie.

I like the van as a fan of the turtles, but for a movie?eh... I liked the one used for the 2007 movie. I like what they did for the nick show; very outlandish, but works well to get them back to their sewer. At least it explains better how it gets from the lair to the surface. Also shows the personalitites of the four teen brothers very well as well as taking in the cobbled together feel.

I will have to wait and see how this movie goes. When I first heard Megan Fox and Michael Bay were involved with this movie I knew to dumb myself down in anticipation. This will keep the brand going still. I mean look what it did for a while to tranformers in the last couple of years.:tcool:

The director involved doesn't help either. Look at the main movies he has done: Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles, The Killing Room, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Darkness Falls. We are not looking at academy award winning material, just netflix watches at best.

The main thing I am happy about in context of the movie is the Pizza Hut furniture. Here's hoping for turtle related stuff at the place I work. :tcool:

Sorry.

Really? Um, so someone with 9,000+ posts in a forum about fake characters is telling someone else that using the cartoonish "shell" slang is "retarded"? :trolleye:

Anyway, I thought it was a good question and I am glad someone mentioned about other Nick characters being seen. Thanks for the (real) answers.

There have been photos that feature Spongebob & other costumed characters in Times Square that seem to suggest Raph will at some point walk through out in the open under the guise of being a movie/cartoon mascot.

I like that idea. In the right writer's hands that could be a great, funny scene.

It would finally explain how the turtles get their pizza money!

I speculate that it has tiny holes in the decal so it can be seen through from inside. Alternatively, they could navigate via display monitors, or it might even be self-driving.

What I wonder is how they get around the issue of being pulled over by every single cop who lays eyes on it. Where I live, tinted windows are illegal if you can't clearly see the driver.

They make decals that look solid on one side, and transparent on the other. They're probably illegal for front windshields and side windows, but I'm sure they'd rather take their chances running from the cops than to be seen.

It'll probably get enhanced with CGI, Usually these movie sets will have just a small section and then the rest are painted in CGI

Yeah, most movie sets now a days are just some greenscreen with some props.

Surely you're not expecting this movie to make any sense. I'll go easy on this and assume they'll only be riding in it when all hell is breaking loose with invaders from Dimenion-X and the like of course it doesn't look battle ready...heck it doesn't look like something that's going to shift a lot of toys either. Unless the inevitable toy version looks different I can see these clogging up shelves.

That's why I have little faith in the whole turtles wearing clothes angle. In principal it isn't a bad idea, specifically ninja garb but I have little faith the designs themselves will actually be good.
