What's up with this RIP Splinter?

I have seen a few people mourning Splinter's death. Did I miss something here?

That's a spoiler warning.

Splinter died in issue 10 of the new Mirage TMNT book. Just came out two weeks ago.

I dunno if the spoiler thing matters much now since about 3 members on the board have a memorial posted on their signatures, which would mean every time you see them post, you see a comic book spoiler.

Well it's continued from the last series (TMNT Volumes 1 and 2) which ran from 1984 to 1995, so technically it's been over 15 years and almost 80 issues they did of the series before this one.

It's still not really clear how he died. He just keeled over, really.

yes I am one of those people.......and I put it up.......a while after people had a chance to find out....it isn't like its BRAND new. :wink:

anyway...he pretty much did just that...fell and died. Which I gotta say....its pretty natural....

Actually if someone could just give me a quick synopsis of the "comic" it would be appreciated. I never really read these, however I am interested about Splinter died, because really NO one ever died in the TMNT universe (ie cartoon).

I've heard about it. I never did read much of the new comics. It sorta sad that Splinter is gone in that series. From the day he found the Turtles swimming in ooze to the day they were becoming true ninjas. As long as the New Splinter in the New Cartoon is still living I'm alright about it.

Actually it loked very much like a heart attack!

Yep, I'm going to go with heart attack. Just from how it was drawn. Splinter's arm has that drawn pained effect in two seperate panals. It's also hanging limply at his side, when he drops the tea cup. All signs of a definate heart attack. :(

Jeese. I say it's about time Splinter kicked the bucket. I mean he's like the Aunt May of mutated rats. Everyone knew he was old and everyone was just waiting for him to die. I would have thought he'd go down fighting though.

OFF-TOPIC: Does anyone remember the Spidey-book, where Aunt May died? That was one of the greatest Spidey-storys ever! When that a**hole John Byrne brought her back I decided to stop buying Spider-Man comics and I haven't bought one since then. I mean, this whole "she-was-an-actor"-crap was so darn ridiculous. :evil:

Well I was just rather comparing the age factor thing. I mean Splinter was pretty old in the comics. It was just a matter of time before he'd be offed sooner or later. I just hope he stays dead for continuity's sake. I mean bringing back a character who legitimately died is pretty much a cop out. I think a more logical way to bring back Splinter would be if his presence is all in Leo's head dispelling wisdom and whatnot in a Luke Skywalker/Obi Wan Kenobi kinda way rather than totally resurrecting him. And concerning Aunt May, I believe she's had so many heart attacks in the comics it became a joke.

I agree, that's why it was such a good idea to let her die. But then Mr. John "Hey I can change everything in the most ridiculous way!" Byrne came and destroyed deMatteis' work. I can't tell how much I hate the crap he wrote.

Ya never know. There might be a new Shredder out there seeking revenge for the death of Oroku Saki. Perhaps he'd be Saki's illegitimate son. Wouldn't that be an interesting story arc if they find out Splinter was murdered? Then they'd have to find out who did it. And wouldn't it be cool if they found out that a new Shredder was behind it all. But I'm just rambling on and musing about this eh?

Well, with all due respect, it's a valid criticism, and people don't need to be apologists about it. I understand if Peter and Jim want the book to be what it is, but a lot of us know it can be better, because it's what we've come to expect from them, and right now the art is one of the BIGGEST flaws the book has, and if people feel the need to express their feeling that the art is subpar, it doesn't make them any less of a fan. It simply means they hold the book up to a higher standard.

It's like being a wrestling fan watching the current WWE. As a fan, I think the current WWE product sucks compared to what they've done in the recent past. That doesn't mean I'm not a fan, it means I want the product to be as good as it can be. It's the same thing with people who criticize the new TMNT book.

I know Laird is doing the book more for himself than for the fans (the way he comes off is a pretty big sign of that), but since that's the case, he needs to expect people to criticize when they don't like what he's doing. Just because we're all fans doesn't mean we think he walks on water, or that anything that says TMNT on it is perfect.

Man do I dislike the last part of that, it hurts my feelings if you actualy feel that because you critique a medium it means you hold it up to a higher standard than I. I feel I have an excellent taste for art, and am decent at producing it, and through those factors I like his work.

Very well stated. I could use my X-Men comics example about this as well. They sure aren't at all as good as the classic stories from the 80's and early 90's. But I still love the X-men. It's just some of Marvel's creative decisions I question. Same thing goes for the Spider-man books.
