View Full Version : Should the Turtles swear in the new movie?

I was wondering, Do you think the Turtles will swear in the new movie? Raphael did in the first TMNT movie, and I dont mean swearing F bombs. But some of the more commonly used ones, Teenagers tend to swear once in a while, and characters can usually swear in a PG-13 rating.

I don't think we need to see hear Leonardo yell, "Eat **** and die motherf*cker!" to Shredder though.

Well they cant really say the MF on a PG-13 flick, But I wouldnt be surprise if we heard the S or BS word. or one yells the WTF, But it cuts off the F part.

I could see some light cursing. Possibly. Nothing outside of the realm of your average superhero movie. I really doubt they will risk any parents leaving the theater thinking, "These turtles my kid likes are pretty dirty."

I don't really have any problem with it.. They can get away with one F bomb and still get a PG-13.. For some reason they let one slide.. It really wouldn't bother me at all. Especially if its mostly Raphael.. I can't really see Leo or Donnie swearing.

I wouldn't call any of the language of the first movie as swearing.
If they said something like "****" I would be surprised though.

Let's not forget... Raph saying "Bitchin'" was surfer slang, not swearing.

This. I think forcing edginess where it need not be for a 'cool factor' is wack, but it would be realistic for them to toss in a few small things. No harm if there isn't any though.

I'm somewhat agreeing with Powder, light swear words are okay if they are sparse. But having them say the f-bomb, or s-bomb, or constantly saying those light swear words are just forcing it. The fighting and violence should be leading the PG-13 rating and not competing with the level of language used in the film.

If profanity is said every 5-15 sentences, sure... they may been seen as "teenagers" but the audience is going to even further dismiss and brush aside any seriousness the movie would have. It's going to be highly ironic that these four Turtles are so disciplined in their fighting while having a sensei that strictly enforces a Japanese form of discipline, but yet these Turtles are not disciplined with their own mouths/language.

i think a "damn", "crap" and "what the hell" here and there is as far as they need to go with colorful language. the overuse of profanity is tacky and shows someone's lack of self control. there are plenty of ways to exhibit passion when speaking other than using profanity.

i think the fight intensity/violence is what will warrant the pg-13 rating.

Since when is crap a curse word? Anyway, I think it can be used appropriately and inappropriately. Take for instance the 1st movie. Raphael says the D*** several times, this makes sense for his character (very hotheaded). Mike and Don both say it once (more of a reflection of their teenager status) but Leo doesn't curse at all. I always took this to show that he was the most mature and in control.

As long as it isn't overdone, it doesn't have to be tacky. I don't think it is necessary to make them seem more believable as teens though ( I mean really how believable do you need to make 4 mutant turtles?)

Zulithe

Yes. As a kid seeing the first TMNT film and hearing them swear made them feel more real, and more teenagey to me. I know they can't have them speak the way REAL teens probably do... it'd have to be R-rated for sure :) But they should definitely try to capture the spirit of teen language which is anything but clean.

This is a kids movie after all.If this movie is for kids, it's already doomed for having too big a budget, and no anthropomorphic anima-... hold on...

What I mean is, a movie of this size needs wide appeal to succeed. Like superhero movies, adults need to like it, too. Doesn't mean they have to curse a lot, I just hope, for the sake of the franchise, this is not a "kids movie."

The Transformers films had frequent use of the words: "f--k" "a--hole", "bitch", "s--t", "hell", "damn", "crap", "ass", and "d--khead". So I would expect the same thing.

RIGHT?!

And it never struck me as swearing and mom, who has been aware of it, never found it offensive. Maybe it's because she didn't make a fuss over it that I never considered it a "bad word" as a child nor did I use the word anyway.

Urban Dictionary says its (bitchen)"A term meaning good ; amazing ; fantabulous", "really good" or (bitchin) "similar to "awesome" or "bad ass", "radical; righteous; tubular", "Something that is very pleasing or awesome in your opinion."

"
1. Exceptionally good of its kind.
2. Of great quality.
3. Said when astonishes someone's fancy.
That tomato soup is bitchen."

But then it comes down to what a person considers a swear, as I have noticed there are people here who find "hell" and "crap" swears.

This. I think forcing edginess where it need not be for a 'cool factor' is wack, but it would be realistic for them to toss in a few small things. No harm if there isn't any though.
I feel the same. Do the Turtles NEED to swear? Is there an important reason why they have to? If not than it is forced.
But if the writers are conscientious about the characters and personalities than an occasional drop wouldn't be weird... especially if they are to not be stuck in the 80s. No one says "tubular" anymore. They are now teens in 2013.

But I'm hoping the PG-13 will be for violence and visuals, not so much language. They dont NEED to swear.

hitmonkey
07-10-2013, 12:59 PM
Not just for the sake of it to be "cool". But, let's say Raph at one point says "Let's kick some _____". Now, no teenager, especially a hotheaded aggressive one is going to say "butt" at the end of that sentence. So if Raph says something like "Let's kick ass" or Leonardo gets frustrated and says "Damn it, Raphael", it won't bother me because it'll feel natural.

Mild swearing or implied swears are fine by me and would still suit a variety of ages. If a more adult word has to happen then just once for dramatic effect is the way to go. Anyone remember the Tales comic where Leo says one and Mikey says something along the lines of 'ha ha potty mouth, I'm telling Master Splinter'? I can totally see that happening.

Since when was hell considered a swear word?

I watch the early seasons of the Simpsons and laugh at how it was once taboo for Bart to say something "sucked." Those jokes probably go over most kids' heads now. So yes, hell was once considered a swear word, and still is by some, albeit by an ever-diminishing number of people.

Quality of writing obviously trumps the use of swear words. Whedon did a good job "talking like a teenager" in Buffy without necessarily always using actual slang from those times, often to hilarious lines of dialogue. Sure, realistically teenagers swear, but there are just so many more important factors that it doesn't even register for me whether or not the movie "ought" to.

I just want it to feel natural. Cursing, or not cursing, could both feel natural or unnatural, depending on how it's handled. I think the first movie did just fine with this.

It'd be fine if it was done in a natural way, not over-the-top to be "funny", or simply to push the PG-13 rating. An example of it done poorly would be "Man Of Steel", where absolutely none of the swearing was necessary, was blatantly tacked-on just to push the rating and show how "grown up" the movie was, and, I'd wager, cost the film a lot of repeat business due to tons of parents saying "You know what? I'm not taking my kid to see a movie where the female lead talks about 'measuring d*cks'."

I'm guessing we'll get some swearing in the TMNT movie, but I wouldn't be shocked if it came more from April and the human characters, or at least if anyone says "sh*t" or something, it likely won't be one of the TMNT saying it. They could probably get away with "damn" and the sort of thing that was passable in the first movie, but it's not likely they'll have any of the four Turtles use any stronger language than that, since they're the main characters in a "kids" movie. You can have strong language in a movie like that, but it has to happen "around" the main characters, not come from them directly.

Sure... why not? They probably aren't teenage anymore, so they can talk more like adults.... either that or they WILL be teenage and we'll all be cursing at the film as it is, so what's a few more S and F bombs gonna hurt coming from the turtles?

All kidding aside, I dunno... I certainly don't think a film like this needs it at all. No film NEEDS the language, but sometimes helps in some humor or expression of extreme anger. You can still tell an amazing story without it though.

I never found the Man of Steel movie to have any tacked-on swearing added for 'the hell of it'. That's how people talk. That comment sounded exactly like something a real world Lois Lane not living in the censored comic book world would say.

It's also worth noting that the PG-13 rating was designed as in between for content that is too heavy for the PG rating but not heavy enough for R. If they are at the age where you fear they might be "corrupted" by film's "offensive" language, then you probably shouldn't be taking them to a PG-13 movie until they are a bit older.

Granted, I believe this film is tied to Nickelodeon Films, so they might say "hell" and "damn" -- hardly profanities at all -- but nothing beyond that. I don't think they've done a PG-13 movie either, so it's likely to be PG. Though, years ago, you would have said the same about a Walt Disney film, and then, bam, Pirates of the Caribbean, so who knows?

Coola: I disagree entirely, I thought it was about as blatantly crammed in as it gets and entirely pandering. For starters, nobody swears at all for the entire last 2/3s of the movie, and the film is better for it. Every bit of swearing (and thankfully, it's not much, but what little is there is jarring) was delivered awkwardly, feeling exactly like scripted lines meant to "push the expectations of the audience" rather than sound like organic, natural dialog.

There's a time and place you can get away with that sort of thing in a movie; a Superman movie is not that time or place, even in a "dark, gritty & realistic" (it was none of those) reboot. Defending it because it makes the movie "cool" and "realistic" is like when we were all in our late-teens/early-20s saying to other people "No, really, me and my friends TOTALLY talk the way people in Kevin Smith movies do! Honest!" Except nobody does, absolutely no one in real life has "conversations" that are really 15-minute long profanity-laden monologues full of fully-formed "clever" riffs on pop culture. Although, one *could* argue that a Kevin Smith movie *needs* profanity or else it doesn't work at all. That is absolutely not true at all for Superman-related films or media.

There was literally nothing else in MoS that pushed a PG-13 rating; even the "violence" everyone complains about was entirely over-the-top, bloodless, consequence-free "cartoon" violence that kids are shovel-fed all the time, plus it's a super-hero movie, so it's expected and more or less required. You remove literally 4 words of dialog, and you have a movie that isn't limiting its audience for the sake of "keepin' it real, dawg." "Superman Returns" did a much better job of it with the one scene where "Sh*t!" is clearly meant to be exclaimed but is drowned out by booming gunfire. The point was made just as well without being explicit.

Keep in mind, in real life I could use about a dozen F-bombs to describe a newborn puppy. I'm fine with profanity, generally speaking, but I do feel there's times in movies and TV that not only is it not necessary, it lessens the integrity of the final product when it's done for no reason, and I feel MoS was absolutely a case where it was tacked on. Let's face it, if someone's swung from not liking Superman into actually liking Superman based on "Dude, no, seriously, they said 'D*CK' in a Superman movie, it's awesome!", if they truly and genuinely feel the entire movie was enhanced by 4 or 5 awkwardly-placed swears, then they don't "get" Superman to begin with.

It's also symptomatic of a much bigger problem I had with that movie: 95% of ALL the dialog was trash. It was like watching "Prometheus" again, with that "I f*cking LOVE rocks!" guy. I'm watching the movie, enjoying the movie, yet every time anyone talks, I'm like, "Nobody talks like that. Ever." I know people don't generally go to action movies to nitpick the dialog, but to me dialog is one of the most important parts of any movie, and I can never fathom how people who get paid a lot of money to talk about and write films for a living can't even grasp the nuances of how real people talk to each other.

I guess agree to disagree. I really didn't see anything wrong with the line or the way she said it. It felt natural, not tacked on and not added for the sake of being 'cool edgey' since the expression itself isn't 'cool and edgey' or anything like that. It's an expression I seen used a few times that just happens to have 'dick' in it. And so what if she said ONE curse word? That doesn't mean she has to constantly swear like a sailor every other scene. People CAN swear ever so often without overdoing it, ya know.

And of course there's room for swearing in a more realistic movie. When people that can fly and toss cars around like nothing are coming at you, are you gonna yell '****!!' or are you gonna yell 'FIDDLESTICKS!!'.

I don't think noone complained when the Joker asked the mobsters if their 'balls dropped' in the Dark Knight, and again, Joker wasn't particularly known for swearing in the comics. And that wasn't shocking or edgey either. It was shocking in the sense that you don't ask a roomful of armed mobsters if their balls dropped.... but it didn't feel tacked on for the sake of a PG-13 rating.

I think you're allowed to drop one f bomb in a pg 13 movie, but ya I don't need to hear the turtles say that. An if we're using bay's transformers as a template, splinter is probably gonna walk in on the turtles and accuse them of masterbating...

But honestly, I wouldn't mind for the lighter stuff like "damn" to be thrown in there when the situation warrants it. I think he first film really handled that well, Ralph only swears when he KNOWS he messed up

Coola, it was less Lois's one line than the entire way the movie handled it when anyone would curse, or the fact it even had to be put in. Other than making MoS a movie some people won't be able to watch with their kids, it would change nothing for the worse if the swears were omitted. A film in the super-hero genre simply should never do anything to intentionally limit its audience, is all I'm saying, because some people do care enough. And again, one could argue that a few choice words aren't out of place in a Batman movie or some of the Marvel movies the way they are in a Superman one. Even in the comics a few years back, when things got all "dark" after Identity Crisis, you'd see some "edgy" language in Batman books but never, ever in Superman books, because it just doesn't fit as well in addition to being unnecessary. You could easily have Luthor call Superman an "assh*le", for example. You just don't, because it adds nothing, and actually sort of "breaks" the fiction of that universe.

And yeah, if someone were about to be crushed by a building or saw Zod fling a car at them, or whatever, they'd likely exclaim some very loud profanity. There's an easy way around that, too: Movies never go into it, just like they never show anyone wipe their ass. You *can* have it in there, or, you can choose not to. When it's done simply because "Hey, we got the rating, so let's play with it," then yes, it's entirely tacked-on. Sure, you could say Lois's line was appropriate for her situation, or that kid calling Clark "d*ck cheese" or whatever the hell it was, OR you could simply have them say something else. To me, it's like making the S shield different: If it literally adds nothing, then don't purposely do something that you know will divide audience opinion. No, you can't possibly ever please everyone, but that's no reason not to TRY. The goal should always be to make a product that appeals to the widest possible audience. The second you as a filmmaker have to justify something by saying "Well, we know some people won't like this decision, but..." that means you already know you did something wrong. So fix it. That doesn't mean "don't ever do anything different or controversial", but for pete's sake make it mean something. Don't just *give* people stuff to complain about.

As far as MoS, I was there opening night and the few times anyone on screen cursed, all it got was awkward laughter from the audience, as in "Wow, kind of inappropriate for this particular movie." I don't like that. It was a small mistake, but it was so damn avoidable I can't help but fault them for it. It didn't "ruin" the movie, but it didn't add anything positive at all. But again, the dialog in that movie was mostly crap. (I actually really liked the movie, but when I like something a lot I spend a lot of time going over what I *don't* like about it as well. It's only fair, as nothing is perfect.)

I will say I think TMNT as a franchise lends itself a lot more to some swearing. It's inherently based on more "adult" themes than a lot of "kids" properties, so you can get away with a lot more as far as swearing, violence, etc. The first movie, for example, handled the whole thing very well. It was a little jarring at first as an 8-year old kid to hear the Turtles curse (and let's be honest, it was a little enticing as well), but it was not severely out of place and felt entirely natural to the situation. I'd honestly appreciate more of the same in the new film, if it fits the situation. Raphael talking about "kicking some ass", for example, would be just fine and welcome. Conversely, Raphael telling someone to "eat my ass!", while maybe in-character would still be jarring and unnecessary to me. It's all in the execution. :)

I don't think it's a necessity to have any swearing in the movie. It didn't add anything to the first film. Plus I really don't need to hear kids swearing at an earlier age to sound "cool" or older. And this is coming from a seasoned veteran of the saltier vernacular.

Yea, crap isn't a swear word.

Anyways, I hope they don't swear and that's just because of my personal preference, but if they do it shouldn't be a lot. The turtles are supposed to be role models for the kids (I know, I know, the original comic is different, but everywhere else they kinda are) and I kinda doubt parents would like to hear their kids saying those words. If any is used, they should be used sparingly, maybe like in a fight of some thing.

Then again I hope they don't swear, but if they do that isn't going to ruin my movie experience.

I remember saying damn when I was watching the first movie when I was a kid. I was trying to copy the lines and my dad freaked and told me to turn off the movie for a bit. I was told how bad it was to say that. Now I couldn't give a damn:D

The new movie will probably have those Bay gross out moments be more noticeable than the actual words the characters are saying. Revenge of the Fallen had the moment were one of the characters removes his pants right in front of the audience, awful. Besides I would be more worried about whether the movie has an actual story and characters we can possibly relate to than what horrible language is coming out of a characters mouth.

I hope they don't swear. I don't see the purpose of it. This movie is obviously for kids AND adults. I'm sure the action will be amazing enough since it's a Michael Bay film, so that should make the adults happy. And if they keep the swearing out, then the kids could watch too.

I don't know. Swearing doesn't bother me at all, but for this film, I hope they avoid it.

Teenagers swear. By most reckoning the film will be rated PG-13. There is precedence for swearing in both the source material (Mirage) and even the first movie (which was only rated PG).

Ergo... yes, of course there should be swearing.

What a strange question. I think the real question is, "Do people actually want teenagers to talk like actual teenagers?"

I dunno. I would hope so? Otherwise I'm unclear why someone would want to invest themself in a movie about them so much.

My own expectation list about TMNT isn't that great, really.

Teenage : They've got to be teenagers. Or at least, start out that way.
Mutant : Yup, they've got to be mutants.
Ninja : They better be real ninjas, no fake "I'm a ninja that has taken a vow against killing" oxymoron type stuff.
Turtles : Yup, they have to be turtles.

It's weird to me that it seems like that's too much to ask.

Given the PG-13 rating expected based upon the TF movies, I'd expect some mild swearing at times, especially by Raphael, Casey, or the villains. But I'd only want it during tense situations to keep it more civil. Most of the reason that the movie will be PG-13 instead of PG will be based upon the amount of violence however.

Even "damn" and "hell" haven't classified as "swears" since the 1950s. Unless you're 4. Nobody likes to hear their 4-year-old say "hell", but usually by the age of, say, 7, they've already graduated to saltier words than that.

As I implied, with "damn" and "hell" it's less a swear than "a word that doesn't sound right coming from or directed at a young child". There is a subtle but definite difference. "Prostitute" isn't a swear word, but it's also a word you'll never hear on a kids' show, just as an example. And most parents probably wouldn't want their kid saying it, or knowing what it meant. But it is not a swear word. "Hell", especially, is not a swear word, it's an allegorical place/alternate dimension, that we're not supposed to say the name of simply because we're supposed to be afraid to go there. That's why it was kind of a swear word among many people in more-religious times, same with "damn", as in "damning someone to Hell", but neither is really relevant as a "swear" or "curse" anymore. If you can say it on the radio or on network TV before 9pm, it's not a curse word.

As a person who drops at least seven F-bombs before noon, re-names most of my friends and acquaintances "Motherf*****", and could use (or invent) twenty different ways to say "f*ck" while describing a litter of newborn puppies, I take great pride in knowing my profanity.

I think you're taking things a little to the extreme, Leo. A very "all or nothing" way of viewing things. "Hell" and "damn" are indeed swear words, but they're mild swear words. Swearing comes in different degrees of severity, and they just happen to be on the lower end of the spectrum. F*** and c*** come at the very top.

Leo656
08-30-2013, 04:54 PM
I don't know, man. This is the first time I've heard anyone sincerely defend "hell" and "damn" as being swear words in forever. Maybe once upon a time, but if you asked 100 people over age 18 in a poll if they counted as swears anymore, I'm betting a large majority would say "no". There IS a difference between full-blown swear words and "words I wouldn't want my 5-year-old to say."

I do live (proudly) in New Jersey, so that MAY be a factor in how I see it, but I'm more inclined to believe that common usage has simply robbed those words of their ability to shock and offend, which is sort of a prerequisite for a word to be considered a "curse".

I respectfully disagree with d*** and h*** not being swear words. I was always taught growing up that they were, in fact, swear words. Funny when you think about things that Splinter wouldn't endorse....in the OT, Splinter condemned violence, but at the same time, he was a ninja master who devoted his life to teaching the turtles to fight...very ironic and bad writing in my opinion. Actually, he didn't condemn violence, but UNNECESSARY or POINTLESS violence. Defending oneself or others is acceptable in his view, but harming others is not. Big difference. what does thinking for yourself have to do with swearing??? :ohwell:

I think he was implying that someone never swearing because their parents said not to is kind of silly, and shows that they have/had a lot of control over them, and expresses a certain amount of naivete. Because most parents who tell their kids not to swear (gasp) actually swear quite a bit themselves. They just don't want their kids to, because kids have no internal filter, and if they start swearing, they'll most likely start swearing in places and in front of people where it simply isn't appropriate.

Once someone is old enough to show some restraint, there's nothing wrong with it. In certain situations it's *exactly* appropriate, like when two consenting adults are in the bedroom together, or, the opposite of that, when some poor guy drops a 200-lb filing cabinet on his foot. In either case, nobody's going to be sugar-coating anything.

That said, there's a level of what would be appropriate in the TMNT movie as well, and I'd say it's right about where the first movie was. Being a Bay-produced film, it will possibly push harder, but they don't need to. I curse more than anyone, but I felt it was horribly out of place in "Man of Steel", for example. Swearing is fine, and sometimes should actually be encouraged, but some movies don't need it.

I don't need the hassle! Besides, I can never be The Law, as I have little to no respect for the rules and if I hadn't been here so long I wouldn't have gotten away with half of the stuff I've said and done in here.

I already got a few of the Deputies in my pocket and that's good enough for me. My off-topic rants and Kevin Nash memes would be compromised if I were ever given a position of authority. No thanks.

I appreciate the vote of confidence, though. :)

Swearing is fine, and sometimes should actually be encouraged, but some movies don't need it.

yes my parents taught me swearing is wrong, but now that I'm old enough....I hate it because I simply hate it.

in my opinion you don't gain anything from swearing but you can hurt people unintentionally from doing it.

it sucks having to put up with people who cuss.....especially when you hear it everywhere....but thats another reason why I love cartoons...so I don't have to put up with it.

oh well :ohwell:....it's a major pet peeve of mine. I know this movie will have cussing, can't do anything about it though.

Well, BabyTurtles, there's another way to look at that. The opposing view is that some of these words are only "bad" because we say they are; words, in and of themselves, are entirely neutral and carry only the power and definitions that we give them. Swears or even racial slurs are all essentially nonsense words, some random gibberish someone mashed together and said, "This is what it means, and I'm trying to offend you with it." If you don't buy into that, the words lose all their meaning and thus, their ability to offend.

For example, I'm a pretty Irish guy; "Mick" is a generally accepted slur towards Irish people. I think it's silly. It makes no sense, to me, that that combination of letters is supposed to add up to something offensive to me personally based on my heritage. So I use it often, and encourage others to do so in my presence. Because it really doesn't mean anything at all, it's just a word, and words only hurt if you let them. You can't cut, kill, or violate someone with words. They have no power at all, they're exactly as offensive as the person hearing them wants them to be.

The power of language is in the speaker and the listener, not in the words themselves. That's *one* way of looking at it, anyway.

I wouldn't say "weak", but it's an idea some people would have to train themselves into embracing. I grew up with people cursing constantly so by the time I was like 5 I'd heard anything "offensive" a person could possibly hear, which made it seem entirely boring and non-offensive.

I think it's scientifically called "proximity theory", or something like that. The more a person is exposed to something, the less shocked and/or offended they are by it, in general.

I can understand that viewpoint, and everybody has pet peeves. But I guess I would go further with that and say that using profanity frequently or casually actually blunts the impact of the word further and further. I mean wouldn't a person take the profane word much more seriously from a "goody-two-shoes" than a person who says it in every sentence or paragraph?
It would be analogous to taking a big "verbal" assault rifle and comparing somebody who shoots it every hour versus somebody who used it every 7-10 years. People are going to notice when somebody very rarely brings out "the big guns".

I myself don't like to use it at all, but there have been times I had to use it toward a total in about 4-5 people in my life (yes, I know only 4-5 people! LOL :P:lol:), when they pushed my long-temper to extremes and there was no way to calm/reason the situation, deviate the conversation, avoid them, when they were completely disregarding how they were treating me, and when this obviously malicious behavior continued relentlessly without mercy.

...Funny thing is, even though its been over 10 years... those same people still remember those times when I brought out "the big guns". And those times marked a permanent shift in the relationship or "line in the sand" with a couple of family members or classmates.

yea you got that right...

I barely heard any cussing when I was a kid......so now that I'm 20 and in college, I hear it left and right and it's killer on my ears.

you would think I'd just eventually loosen up and start cussing a little too, but hearing so much swearing only made me resent it more XD.....

@JYX: I just can't bring myself to say them.....it's like a mental tick! XD but if it does slip out...I'd probably say it in front of my family first than my friends or strangers

Not trying to be offensive (and I know I'm taking this conversation too deep ), but I find it a bit intriguing that some who don't mind using profanity/swearing casually still would use it against others, thinking it would cause some form of insult or hurt. If the speaker or even the recipients have been that accustomed to it, then why bother using profanity at all? The "forbidden" or "tabooish" aspect of it is completely watered down. By then, saying the f-word would make just as much of an impact as saying fiddlesticks.

It completely blurs away the social defining lines of "decency" and "obscenities", on top of that, it makes it all the more difficult for the recipient to gauge, or even take the speaker's emotional hatred seriously if the most extreme spiteful words are used to a desensitizing degree. :ohwell:

This is all curiosity on my part, not any form of condescension. :P

I was brought up watching R-Rated films and my Mother and I would go to see them at the theaters where a few times the ticket taker would be concerned about my attendance "Maam you do know this movie has profanity and violence in it?" and my Mother would usually say "yes I know but I raised my boy and he knows right from wrong, he knows how to separate fantasy from reality. I don't really consider badass a swear word but its's not a word I say out in public so more of a minor cuss word.

As it looks like it's going to be a 12A (PG 13) movie it be more focused on how violent it is and how much swearing there is going to be in it, their certainly won't be any nudity in it (I hope not anyway) So they can make it as violent as possible. But I do wonder if any blood/injuries will be shown.

I remember reading the 1st Avengers film was almost a R rated film.

Even if they do say the F word it will only used once (and maybe a couple of S words too) in a 12A (PG13) film. As I said before it be more focused on how violent it is.

I don't think they can announce an official rating until the MPAA has reviewed the final cut. Because it's technically up in the air until then. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're in limbo, right now.

PG-13 is fine for these movies. Parents don't object to that like they used to. And if they keep the profanity at Marvel levels, there shouldn't be any problems with parents.

I'm pretty sure Mysterious Skin got a higher rating due to the gay content, child abuse backstory for two of the characters, the fact that there was a scene where someone was sexually assaulted and the fact that one of the characters was a gay prostitute.

The ratings board is much more comfortable with high levels of violence than sexual themes. god that movie was depressing!

That movie was depressing, and I actually cried a little bit at the very end. But there are still movies out there that deal with the same controversial themes and only get an R. Last House on the Left was disturbing, but it was just an R. Bastard Out of Carolina was one of the most difficult movies to ever sit through, R. Velvet Goldmine dealt with gay themes and had full frontal male nudity and that was an R too. Like I said, the MPAA is funny. And I know they got called out for it when Blue Valentine got slapped with an NC-17.

I actually couldn't finish the film - and I couldn't finish the book either. I'm a freaking wuss when it comes to depressing stuff; I just can't handle too much miserable real-life stuff. I get enough of that in... well, real life!

Ratings are way screwy and utterly nonsensical in a lot of cases. Did you ever watch This Film Is Not Yet Rated?

As a kid Raph's "DAAAAAAAAAMN" made me gasp and I thought it was cool, just like Mikey's Ninja Kick the damn rabbit line. It just sounded cool.

Hm, notice how neither Leo nor Donny said anything like that?

Hm, ironic, my MP3 player just started playing Tarzan Boy...best part of movie 3.Sex trumps Violence every time, in the eyes of the MPAA.

A film with alot of sex is quicker to get an NC-17 than one with alot of violence.I think it's because violence is easier to explain. For the most part it's not acceptable and most don't condone it. Sex is a natural thing, but at the same time you don't want them going out and having it either.

When did Raph say bitchin? I've never heard that. I want to go hear it now.

Oh and to stay on topic. I'm expecting them to swear. I expect atleast one of these turtles to drop the f-bomb too.

Few pages back everyone was saying "Oh, it's a kid's show." Then what is Transformers?

Also, there was talk about hell and damn. They are cuss words. I used to get told if you wouldn't say it in church, then it's cuss word. Unless of course it's being used like "So and so was damned to hell."

That aside, is it wrong that I expect that in the Nick series? Like in the Shellacne ep. I was expecting Mikey to say, "What the hell!" I always expect Raph to come out and say something...but maybe it's implied they may use colorful language for the series. When Donnie said "fungus", Mikey casually said, "Language, there's a lady [April] present." I know it was only for a joke, but think about it. The only curse word that comes close to "fungus" is the "f dash dash dash word. The Queen mother of all dirty words." lol *Gives anyone a cookie if you get the reference.* lol

That aside, I could picture the Nick turtles using mild bad language. I don't see why it would be for the movie turtles.

I totally forgot about Raph's 'bitchin'" at the end of the first movie.

I just don't want them to cram it in just for the sake of "Look how edgy and grown-up we are! We're doing a movie based on a kids' toy property, but look! We got Fox's ass and CUSSIN', so Dad can have fun with the movie, too!" It's usually SO awful when they do it in the Transformers flicks, and even the very few spots they did it in Man of Steel it was entirely out of place and unnecessary.

If it works organically, that's one thing, but they don't need to go all Kevin Smith on it just to prove "This ain't no cartoon."

Even if they did some day make a movie in the spirit of Mirage, with an 18 certificate, it would be a bit much to hear Raph constantly use the f and c words. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see something like that, but young fans would still want to see a more mature Turtles film and it would probably set a bad example. In saying that, most youngsters swear more than adults these days.

As for this movie, I don't see the problem with words such as 'damn', 'hell', 'crap' etc. They are used in the 1990 film and it never did most of us much harm.

Coincidentally, I did a google search today looking for opinions on whether people take offence to swearing or not. Lots of people said that the aggression inherent in vulgarity made them uncomfortable, but others said that profanity is a good way to stop ourselves from bottling things up and is actually very healthy. I swear a reasonable amount, a large part of the reason for that being the environment I am generally in i.e. an urban area of the West of Scotland. It's just natural here. I believe it's important to shape our behaviour to suit the environment we are part of, and in that respect it would make perfect sense for New York teenagers to curse. It would add more authenticity to the film, but ultimately entertainment is constrained by many factors.

All of the above is why it seems bizarre that biker characters in Sons of Anarchy rarely if ever use the f word. Totally unrealistic but necessary as it is not a premium cable TV show.

"Look how edgy and grown-up we are! We're doing a movie based on a kids' toy property, but look! We got Fox's ass and CUSSIN', so Dad can have fun with the movie, too!"

Hahaha.

Are you saying that the turtles used those words in the comics? Because I can assure you they did not. May have been an implied F bomb in Tales somewhere, but looking like "@%#$" or something.

Yes, I was referring to the blanked out characters in Tales. I know they didn't swear in Volume 1 etc. To be fair, it's quite frequent in Tales.

Regardless, I was really referring to the more macabre, dim atmosphere of the Mirage comics in relation to Fred Wolf, Nick etc. Even though swearing wasn't really a part of that, it would be a natural extension of that darker sort of mood should a movie ever be made which is totally faithful to Mirage. I hope I've cleared up what I originally meant.

As far as the swearing goes, it really depends on the context. I couldn't care less if they do cuss, as long as it doesn't sound like they've just thrown it in there to be edgy. As long as it's natural and in the flow of the scene and in tune with the characters, they can drop any bombs they want.

I'd be surprised if they did use a lot of cursing though - at the end of the day, the studio's going to want the dollars from the kiddy audience. The fact that they threw Fox into this indicates to me that they're trying to give this thing as broad a market appeal as possible.
