I have to admire how this show gives expanded, interesting, and at times, unexpected origins for many classic characters, but I'm not sure if this version of Slash sounds so good...or is that, so bad? If they make Slash, and he's an ally to the other turtles rather than an enemy, then what if he becomes the permanent fifth member of the team? I doubt I'd like that.

My only problem is that they call him 'Slash'. He should've just kept on being Spike because now they're messing with an already established character! Slash should be the villain not a good guy...

Yeah, I'unno, I kinda like the idea but the very first thing I thought was "Why's his head so tiny?"

I'm sure they'll eventually sell me on it, but they really shouldn't have to. I guess they *really* wanted him to look different from the other Turtles. I "get" it, I just don't fully support it. Ah well.

Not completely sold on the idea of Slash being a fifth hero (LOL see what I did there?) Turtle.

His design looks..... OK.. not great, but since he is no longer a bad guy.. I guess its an OK design.

I do like the idea of Feldman voicing him, I am also open to the notion that I may end up liking the character... fingers crossed.

Such a tiny head!
And it's interesting to get Feldman back on working in the TMNT stories.

I'm intrigued to hear what he'll sound like or if he'll sound anything like Donnie.

Seems like a lot of the villians from the original run are becoming allies... Slash, Metalhead (unless I'm mistaken, I thought he was a villian) and Leatherhead.

Interesting, I wasn't expecting this but I like the idea. For a moment I thought Raph was going to lose his pet and gain an enemy but a friend? Cool.

Shall be interesting to see how this all turns out.

Glad we won't have the angst of Raphael losing his pet at least.

Slash is a good guy in the Archie comics, where he started out.
Metalhead became Donny's robot maid by the end of his episode.
Leatherhead was a good guy in the Mirage comics, where he started out.

:tsmile:

I will echo the sentiments about his head. I'm guessing that it was made that way to stress his physical strength and make it very clear he's mentally simple (like OT Slash). Either way, it would look better with a more traditional look IMO. Regardless of that, the rest of him looks amazing.

I really dislike the idea of him becoming a 5th turtle. He better not be in every episode, although since he lives in the lair I don't know where he could go.

As Peter Laird would say, adding a 5th turtle to the group is a horrible bankrupt idea. The only reason Slash worked in past versions is because he was a rogue that only showed up every so often.

Would make a great character arc for Raphael too.

Maybe Raph will become friends with Casey Jones if this doesn't work out. Let's say he doesn't like Casey Jones until Slash goes rogue.

Anyways - this is definitely a drastic change from the origin of Slash, but I am perfectly fine with this take.:tcool: It's just that tiny head that bothers me. Maybe like Karai's hair, I'll get used to it. Eventually, when things are done on screen, it looks better than as a still.:twink:

Gyt Kaliba
07-13-2013, 08:59 AM
Kinda figured this was what was coming, since with Casey not being Feldman, this was the next obvious 'connected to Raph' route they could go. Pretty cool looking design too, can't wait to see this guy in action.

And yeah, I don't think they're going to make the mistake of having a permanent fifth Turtle. The writers of this show have done great so far, and I'm sure they know the um, 'issues', with that idea.

What I'm thinking will happen is Spike will mutate, and he'll stick around with the gang and remain known as 'Spike'. That's probably even where he'll get his mask, belt, and probably weapon too. But things will be different between him and Raph now - perhaps Spike will still want to be all pet-like with Raph, and it creeps Raph out? - and eventually Spike will go rouge and re-name himself 'Slash'.

I've been wanting to make a custom Slash using the NICK turtles, but it looks like I'll hold off and see if the figure looks like it will be a good base to use for a custom (hopefully, it will have the articulation and detailing of the regular turtles). Even if they do release him, I'll definitely be modding him. Looks like he'll be bigger than the turtles, which is good, but I just don't care for the overall design of his peanut head.

Not really sure how I feel about mutated spike becoming BFFs with raph, or the fact that he becomes a permanent member of the team. I mean, is he just gonna hang out with them at the lair? Where does that leave casey then? Me not like... I dig the design however, except for the head. The color combination they picked is pretty rad as well (btw, weren't those the colors used in the original Slash concept? I can't find it now however so I can't link to it :ohwell:). Although, to be honest, I kind of wished we'd gotten something along the lines of the LH redesign. Something like this:

Just as a disclaimer though, I gotta say that my deep fascination with Ross's art has nothing to do with this... like at all

Also why does Slash immediately mutate into an adult form? No toddler Slash?

Well he is a grownup turtle by the time he mutates, while the others were babies when that happened. That being said, Splinter so emphatically stressing the baby thing in his origin speech now makes a lot of more sense.

Give them a chance to do what they want. So far everything they have done is awesome, so let Raph and Slash be buddies. If the series wants to change some stuff, let them.

And as for Casey. Whatever. I get the feeling he's be more of a hardcore vigilantee that STAYS that way and appears in a few episodes, like the 80's show. WITHOUT being April's love interest and Raph's best friend. It seems his bad-assness loses a lot of point the moment he becomes better friends with the Turtles and he turns into a loveable goof. Perhaps making him a more serious version of the 80's cartoon where he's crazy and hardcore and appears in a few eps.

As for Slash, I'm sure they'll find some lame-ass excuse to make him not live with them and appear on occassional episodes. The 80's toon were full of characters that could have either lived with them or become more permament allies but always have some excuse to leave at the end of the episode.

You guys worry too much. The show hasn't let us down yet.

That was exactly what I was thinking. Two's company, three's a crowd. And I get the feeling Slash will be a bit fond of playing beneath the rules.

We don't need three vigilantes.

I'm not too sure about this 5th turtle thing. It was tried before with Venus and the reaction from fans was volatile. Personally, I think the foursome should stay a foursome.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Words cannot describe how happy I am about this turn of events. Slash is probably my favorite TMNT side character and to finally have a really awesome animated incarnation of him is just amazing. Him wielding his vintage figure's Mutant Mace and being an ally to the Turtles are also pluses, as they definitely could use more of those. I thought Spike was adorable before, but now knowing that he's going to be Slash just makes me love the little guy even more. I can't freaking WAIT for Season 2. :D

I hope Spike/Slash isn't a complete idiot in this continuity.

Not sure I like the insinuation that he's going to be a regular 5th turtle addition to the fearsome foursome though. But I'm mostly curious to see how they'll handle the whole thing. I'd love to see a Slash vs. Leatherhead throwdown at some point.

Well, with Venus the whole thing was thrown out of left field that they suddenly had a sister. With Spike, he's Raph's pet and not related to them in any way, so it's definitely a different take on the fifth Turtle thing. I don't mind it, and I really can't wait to see what they do with the character. Like I said before, I have faith in these writers that they'll do things the right way.

This is exactly why I didn't want Slash in the Nick iteration. They are totally going with the idea of being similar yet immensly different in terms of re-introducing characters, which I love, but with that knowledge there's some characters I'd just rather not see knowing that Nickelodeon has found their own lane as far as this series goes. Slash was number one in my mental list of characters I didn't want touched. So I'm glad the kids of today get to experience that character (he's one of my favs) but at the same time I'm a little (just a little) disappointed because I knew it would be something like this based on the rest of what I've seen with Nick.

...and I wanted him to be EVIL!!!! What's all this ally talk? Since he's an ally, however, I hope he's a skilled fighter. "He lives with the turtles and sees them training all the time." <--(hypothetical words) seems like a likely explanation. I just hope he doesn't get dumbed down like Dogpound and only screams and slashes (no pun intended) at people. *smh*.

Maybe if "Spike" defects to the villains for a spell, they'll rename him "Slash" to reflect his shifted alliance and more sinister persona.

TheJ-manTurtleMan

I foresee an instance where something happens in the effect of Raphael yelling "get him spike!" And the newly mutated spike slashes at something with his claws, which prompts Mikey to say something like "maybe we should call him slash?" But that's all we hear of it. I mean, fishface and dogpound have those names, but they are still occasionally called xever and Bradford.

If they don't turn him heel eventually, that's a huge wasted opportunity. Slash is an ok character, but I'm not in love with the idea of him living with the TMNT and being their "big buddy". It's ok for storyline purposes in the beginning, but it would be better if they had him become a tragic villain later on, if for no other reason than to keep him from overshadowing the other guys.

Put it this way: "The Real Ghostbusters" was great; "Slimer & The Real Ghostbusters" was awful. "Slash & The TMNT" would be awful, too.

Thats true. This is another interesting thing about the Slash progression:
FW: Bebop's Pet - Villain
Archie: Alien Turtle (and we all gave Bay such a hard time.) - Villain with an eventual touching face turn.
Nick: Raph's pet - hero with the definite possibility of a heel turn.

I still think that Archie's Slash will be my favorite take on the character, but I'm excited to see what the Nick guys do with this. So far they haven't let me down.

Now off to Facebook to see if Rob Paulsen can divulge anything about working with Corey. Heck...it's kinda a reversal of him and Sean. Now he's the "new Don" and Feldman's the "elder statesman" as it were.

I know. I'm not in love with it; as a general rule I don't like "stylized" art or animation. I always grew up with the Neal Adams philosophy, "'Style' just means you don't know how to draw", or something to that effect. Stuff looks like what it looks like. It's like how bad the humans in the CGI TMNT look to my eyes; I get that it's "a style", it just looks completely wrong.

I get that cartoons have a little more leeway in general with this, but I've always preferred cartoons where the animation approaches at least being semi-realistic, at least with regards to basic proprtions, etc.

I can now honestly understand the complaints of people who are against CGI or who are against the look of this show. Cgi shows has a tendency to have this look that are either lazy or bland which is the reason why most of them look so similar to each other and I'm sorry to say this but this, this look right here is downright lazy.

As CGI shows go, I will say TMNT is generally one of the best-looking I've seen. A few character designs notwithstanding.

(Despite the fact that the CGI style - which is entirely a production choice, remember, not a necessity - means that New York, the biggest city in the entire world, will never have more then 3 people on the street at any given time. Which is always going to bother me a little.)

Well, actually, there were quite a few people in "I, Monster" if you think about it, but that was because it was daytime. Still, it was nice to see some other people on the streets, and there were a few in "TCRI" as the Turtles were chasing the Kraang ship.

As for Slash's design, it's okay, but it definitely could be better. Still, I'm anxious to find out how he'll be written and what he'll sound like. I have a feeling he may not be an ally for the Turtles for a long time and eventually may turn into a villain later, but we'll see.

I'm betting that after his first few appearences he sets out to find his own way, or becomes trapped in dimension x. Thus he stays a hero/anti hero and can aid the guys in future episodes. Maybe he will even "evolve" more in dimension x and his head will look more traditional as a result of it. Who knows other than the Nick writers?

I wonder if he'll have his Psycho Sai.

I was thinking this. His original figure had the sai and Raph uses sai. Maybe eventually Raph will attack him and Slash/Spike will bend one up and keep it.

Why no two-tone eyes? I can't even see his eyes actually...

Spike is a tortoise right?

I wonder if his look is an attribute to his size (meaning he'll be big) or will he be sized like the rest of the turtles? If he is big, I wonder what his "Get-oozed-touch-this-become-that" permutation will be...

..hope Splinter kicks his butt. For that matter everyone else on this show, he's a good butt-kicker. Leatherhead didn't want none....heh heh. *ahem*

If he goes bad, I'm guess it will be Raph's fault. Raph will probably be unable to stop treating him like a pet, ordering him around like a lackey & so on. The turtles will take him into battle with Shredders mutants and Raph will be a jerk to him, trying to make him fight his battles for him. Then Slash gets sick of it, rages out, and goes off alone one night only to be found by Xever & Doggpound who say that if he joins them he'll be treated as an equal.

NinjaPug

I'd like to see the Turtles be very protective of him and not let him go on missions because he's never had ninja training which would cause him to be angry and resentful towards the turtles. One night he sneaks out and runs into Karai who begins training him and not to sound all Star Wars but turns him to the dark side and against the turtles. Then you could have an arc surrounding Raph trying to get his friend back.

My first thought upon seeing this new version of Slash is 'Bulkhead' from Transformers Animated. He has a similar build, including the large lower jaw and of course being green...
I like how they seemed to take a lot of nods from the original Slash toy with the color skin, the claws, and even the belt seems to give a nod to it.

I'm always open to new interpretations of characters in this, and they certain gave us different versions of Rat King, Splinter, and the Kraang.

I wonder if the Fugitoid will show up in the show soon, or maybe the Neutrinos. They came up with a unique new version of both of them in the IDW comic.

Anyway, yeah. Slash. They say he's a hero in this but I'm willing to bet that he'll TRY to be a hero, but due to his size and maybe intelligence it doesn't really work out and he screws up a lot like the Pulverizer, only much, much worse being a giant mutated turtle. The turtles other than Raph want to be rid of him, he thinks they're going to do throw him out like he was when he was still Spike, he goes on a rampage attacking them first, and Raph has to choose between his brothers or his friend.

Not funny CowabungaMikey...

MrTMNT2012,Agent Bishop was said by Tom Waltz to be included in IDW's overall plan its just a matter of when it best suits him to fit into the storyline.

Maybe in concept, it initially had a very different head design that look nothing like Spike. It probably wasn't even suppose to have anything to do with him, but one of the executives from nickelodeon notice all of the fan hype of Spike possibly being Slash so they decided to crave into the demand of the fan base and try their best to make it look like him, even though the original concept was already finish and coded. I only saying this because this design really looks rush and slap together.

You know, the head size is probably alright, but when compared to the freakishly big body then... well, you get the idea. I mean he is supposed to be 6 foot tall, which isn't that far off from donnie who is estimated (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=43005&highlight=tall+turtles) to be 5'6". By the looks of it, you could fit two (or maybe three) donnies side by side to make one slash, so we I guess we are in for a inconveniently big turtle that doesn't fit pretty much anywhere. But hey, I bet don can make him a car or something that nick can later on sell to kids as a new toy.

I think if they did something, where Mikey became extremely jealous/or such against Spike (since he'll probably be taking all of Raph's attention away from him), then that would be interesting.

I could see Mikey being jealous of Raph spending all his time with his new best bud Spike, or something like that.

I just thought of the most obvious thing. Archie Slash worked best as an anti-hero. What if that's what causes his falling out with the turtles? What if Slash wants to be a good guy but hates the Turtles cause they won't do whatever it takes to end a threat. What if he takes justice to a path the Turtles won't follow. He might leave them to fight crime Punisher style, and if the Turtles get in his way, too bad.

We already discussed this earlier in the thread. It's pretty safe to say Slash will have a falling out eventually and become evil or at least conflicted with the Turtles.

I never heard THAT as one of the reasons though. I just heard he'll be evil for the sake of being evil, or maybe he gets tired of Raph treating him like a pet.

I'm thinking more of him being an anti-hero... still good, or at least doing what he does cause he sees himself as the good guy.

The one thing that scares me about his small head is that they better not make him all brawns and no brains....

Why is it safe to say he will have a falling out? Why should Ciro have to do exactly the same thing as before? Just cause some people want to see the same thing rehashed doesn't mean it is a given. Maybe Slash this time around stays with the Turtles and does become the 5th Turtle for a time, maybe he sacrifices himself to save Raph, maybe he gets reverted back to Spike. Just cause he was evil before doesn't mean he has to be evil this time.

Because a 5th Turtle is a boring and bankrupt idea. Also Slash being a good guy is just...boring. He'd basically be a Turtle version of The Pulverizer especially with his bigger and more clumsy side.

As others have said, they also probably can't resist having the Turtles fight him, just like the Turtles fought Leatherhead.

Cowabunga Carl
07-18-2013, 07:29 PM
So big equals clumsy? Yeah I'm not buying the kool-aid your selling. Sammo Hung proves that wrong. If Slash is trained by Splinter there is no reason he couldn't be as agile as the others. I mean it is fun to speculate but to flat out say "this means this" is just silly. Right now we have a photo and that is it. At the moment one theory is as valid as another.

And the ida of a 5th Turtle is boring? Why because you say so? There are stories that could be told that maybe focus on being the outsider and trying to fit into a group that has been around longer with each other. Or maybe he starts a rivalry with Dogpound because they can go toe to toe and are equally matched instead of Dogpound always beating the crud out of the Turtles.

Point being is we don't need to see the same thing exactly over and over again. I have faith in Ciro to do this take justice however he presents him.

You actually think a permanant 5th turtle to the team is a good idea? As PL said its a horribly bankrupt idea that ruins the perfect dynamic the TMNT has and adds a 5th turtle for no real reason other than, "Here's a new Turtle."

Slash needs to go rogue and on his own. Its the only reason his character ever worked.

Peter Liard said a lot of things and thought a lot of things were good ideas that weren't. I'm not going to follow someone blindly because they created something. Turtles has become bigger then him or Eastman. I'll forever be grateful to them for creating the franchise but that doesn't mean they are God.

To say it wont work is short sighted and narrow. Just because it hasn't been done in a way that works doesn't mean it can't be done. To force your opinion as fact doesn't make your opinion right. Just like my opinion may not be right. But I can speculate and toss ideas out to talk about. I value everyones opinion and talking about them is great. But it annoys me when people say "No, it has to be this way."

A 5th Turtle as a real main cast member (as in, he gets the same screentime as the other 4 turtles get and he's in every episode) would be a very obvious "jump the shark" moment for the franchise.

Thankfully I'm sure Nick knows this too, and from the sounds of things he'll only be with the Turtles for an episode or two before going off on his own for whatever reason.

Depends how far into the new season they've recorded though. If they're only recorded up to episode 7-8, then Slash appearing in two episodes is something major.

Also we don't know when Slash is actually introduced, whether it be the first few episodes or further into the season.

Radio interview with Feldman talking about Slash / TMNT. I haven't listened yet so I don't know how much time is spent on the topic.

During an interview with Corey Feldman on my sister show Totally Driven Radio, Corey gave us some scoop on the new season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Ninja Turtles fans rejoice! Actor Corey Feldman, known in the 90's as part of "The Corey's" (along with deceased actor Corey Haim) is returning to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle family to voice a "new turtle" for the hit animated series which airs on Nickelodeon.

While being interviewed by popular internet radio show, Totally Driven Radio, the actor confirmed that after nearly two decades away from the "The Turtles" he is once again coming back into the fold. Feldman who provided the voice for turtle Donatello in the 1st and 3rd live action movies that were hugely popular in the early 90's, is known for his work in films like The Goonies & The Lost Boys.

During his almost 90 minute interview with radio hosts Bay Ragni & Frank Naimoli, Feldman stated, "I have returned to "The Turtles" and henceforth I am now a brand new turtle which has been created for the show." Feldman then goes on to explain that the turtle in question, named Slash, was created in the original comic books and will have an origin story in the animated series as the pet of hot tempered turtle Raphael, coincidentally played by Sean Astin, who co-starred in the cult classic movie The Goonies along side Feldman. Making this a reunion of sorts for the two actors.

Nickelodeon renewed the series for a second and third season already. The freshman season finale takes place August 8th, 2013 in a one hour special titled "Booyaka-Showdown ". The second season is set to premiere just one month later, in September of 2013.

You can listen to the entire interview with Corey Feldman by following the link below and hear what he has to say on a variety of topics, including his return to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle family.

Will Slash act like "Hulk" in the series? I like Slash being the 5th turtle of the group.

He'll need a lot of training in ninjutsu from Splinter, unless he was watching Raph and the others train while as Spike.

While mindless:
- "Slash destroy!"
- "Slash, love to smash!"
- "Raphael... best friend?"
- "Slash, don't LIKE Raphael's brothers!"
- "Mikey, stupid! Don, smarty. Leo.... he's okay!"
- "Raph... friend? Raph... turtles... brothers!"

In intelligence:
- "You're not worth my time!"
- Slash: I need to leave for a while.
Raph: But Slash... I don't want you to go.
Slash: It's best for me to find my destiny... as a mutant... and a ninja. But Raph, if you and your bros need help... and that includes Casey and April. I'll find you.

ninja-zero
08-27-2013, 06:21 PM
I think that once Spike gets mutated by the mutagen, he starts to lose it and forgets he was Spike. The Shredder and the Foot find him, recruit him, train him and renaming him Slash.

Raph thinks Spike was kidnapped when Slash appeared and believes Slash "kidnapped" Spike. Realized that Slash is Spike, and that he forgotten who he was, Raph tries to calm him and help him remember that he's Spike.

Eventually, some pieces of memories of him and Raph start appearing and begins to remember Raph. Turning his back on the Foot, he joins the Turtles, and Raph feels that this'll be something to get use to.

Splinter could train him in his own way of ninjutsu. Though he'll need also to learn manners and how to speak in proper sentences.

Slash goes evil first then goes to good.

Would Corey Feldman's voice really work for this character? I just can't picture it.

I mean, I'm one of the few that think Feldman's voice work as Donatello was the absolute worst voice that Donatello ever had. Adam Carl, who voiced Donnie in Secret of the Ooze, was a miles better Donnie than Feldman.

Of course, I'm also one of the few that absolutely does not like Sean Astin's Raphael voice (well, the whole way they've done Raph in the new cartoon has made it one of my least favorite incarnations of the character).

The other voices & characters on the 2k12 show grew on me. Mikey especially grew on me, both character and voice-wise.

But April, Raph, & Splinter? Just simply do not like those 3 on the new show, both character & voice wise.

Astin & Feldman. I'd rather see them do a Goonies 2.

But that's just my own personal opinion, so don't shoot me.

I like what IDW has done with him so far, and maybe he will be more like that version. I don't know enough about him in Archie to speculate on that one.

dont apologize, haha. i wasnt disagreeing. im just saying that if that happens, that sounds a lot like what could happen with karai.

i like your theory

Well thank you.

Maybe once Karai learns the truth of her real father, both her and Slash will go soul searching together.

The first time I saw Spike I knew he was going to eventually be Slash. I'm so pumped for this character!

Gotta be honest, I don't like the design.

Not saying that its bad for this series. Hey maybe it'll work well for this.

I just prefer Slash to look like a twisted version of a Ninja Turtle... The "Bizzaro" to their "Superman" if you will. Thats an important aspect of slash to me and I just don't get that from this Slash.

I kind of agree with this. The "evil twin" element of Slash was always appealed to me. Like Venom to Spiderman in a way. But I really liked his portrayal in TMNTA, they way he evolved into a hero in his right.

But, other than the really dinky head and looking a bit to pudgy, which they could play off him being a different kind of turtle. I think it works well enough. We'll know for sure shortly.
