View Full Version : Will Arnett talks tone

The article is really about his new sitcom (which looks funny, btw), but he talks about about TMNT.

http://www.accesshollywood.com/will-arnett-talks-the-millers-tmnt-and-arrested-developments-dark-side_article_82462

The new comedy comes after a busy several months for the actor, who recently wrapped up filming “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” where he plays cameraman Vernon Fenwick.

“It’s staying true to the mythology, staying true to the characters, but Michael Bay is producing it and so just kind of heightening that,” Will said when Access asked him to sum up the new version. “It’s not the Styrofoam suit movies from the ‘90s. It’s CGI, it’s tons of action, it’s really fun.”

And lots of pizza.

“There’s a lot of pizza. … I’m a little pizza-ed out, but it’s a really fun,” he continued. “It’s an action movie, and it’s a family movie. You can take kids, but a lot of the action is really intense. We got to work with incredible stunt guys. The technology behind the movie, the CGI from Industrial Light Magic is going to be breathtaking; I think that when people see the art, when they see the turtles, when they see these actions scenes, they’re going to be blown away.”

Proving the movie is indeed family friendly, Will was able to bring his two young sons to the set, and he said they had a blast.

“That was an amazing experience, actually, because my kids got to come to set every day and bring their nun chucks and work with the stunt guys every day so it was super fun,” he said.

It's cool to know he had fun making the film. I trust him as an actor and I think he will play a great Vern. Yet it doesn't surprise me he is speaking good about it. After all why would you bite the hand that feeds you!

Having a condescending tone about the first movie is a huge red flag. Also, tons of pizza? I'm starting to get the idea that the people behind this movie are only grasping on the upmost mainstream elements of the TMNT and running with it.

I mainly point it out because he discusses to tone of the film. Not that any of it's surprising. But he says you can take kids but the action is intense. Another voice saying the turtles look great, etc...

One thing that strikes me is that he points out that this is a Michael Bay movie. Michael Bay has been quick to say this is Leibsman's movie. But Fitchner and Arnett have both singled out Michael Bay in the same way.

I guess the question is: Are the actors pointing to Michael Bay because he's really hands on and has had a big influence on the film, or are they just doing it because he has a big name that sells tickets?

Probably primarily because he had final say on casting and they want to make sure and suck his **** publicly so he will continue to give them cushy parts in big money movies.

I like the confirmation of ILM. Probably the best effects house out there, IMO. Although WETA seem to have had more experience in the motion-capture department. Anyway, I'm just glad its one of the big boys handling the visuals.

Just to reiterate (again) that I can't wait to see the designs of the Turtles and Splinter and any other CG characters. The designs have been hyped up so much. I just hope they're worth it.

ILM will most likely handle the other stuff, Big movies tend to have more then one FX company working on the FX shots. Weta would handle the motion capture stuff and ILM would probably do all the background and other CGI stuff you see around when you have blue or green screens involved.

The pizza part or the action part because that's really all he said.

Well I suppose the pizza part but then it's not so much the presence of pizza references as much as even he a comedic actor got kinda sick of them lead me to think that it'll be overdone.

That and him referencing Michael Bay isn't exactly doing the movie any favours or dispelling any of the criticisms that is out there about this film.

While we're at it I'm not sure it's wise to have digs at the 90s movies. At least the first one is remembering fondly partly because how great the animatronics were for that time and still hold up quite well today. I realise they're trying to hype up their version but once again almost all of it is based on the visual effects and what little else seeps out betrays that it might not be so good. At this point anyone'd be forgiven for thinking that this amazing cgi is all the movie has going for it.

"It’s not the Styrofoam suit movies from the ‘90s."

Wow, what's next Willie...are you going to go to Jim Henson's grave and piss on his headstone now?

Next time, try talking with your head Out of your ass. Because the new movie that you're a part of hasn't done Jack & Sh*t to prove that it'll even compete with the original 1990 film, other than maybe an April with Bigger Tits.

Or Mr. Arnett, you should stick to 'classics' that you were a part of like Hot Rod, Jonah Hex, or The Brothers Solomon...

Seems like everyone forgot not to judge a book by its cover. Not even that, because a book is a completed product.

TMNT is cooler than MOTU

With all of the praise for the Turtle designs that the cast and crew are spouting out, you'd think that Paramount would put out some kind of publicity photo to get some positive hype going for this.

Yeah, I know. It's okay for you to judge other people and put them down if they have an iota of negativity towards this project (which you proved by calling me a 'moron' for having an opinion, just because you disagree with it. And I'm sure you'll follow that up with a 'Oh grow up' or "Deal with it" kind of response).

But, how dare I judge this work of art before thee comes out to the wonderments of Civilization! Now there will be Mass Hysteria, the Pillars of Heavens will shake, and cats and dogs will be living together because little ole' me aka Mr. Nobody said something negative before the movie came out.

:o

Ahhhhhhhhh!!

*cough* And actually, I was talking about the entire TMNT Movie Discussion. So nah, not just this specific thread alone. I only mentioned 'this thread' since we were currently chatting on it.

But even about this thread alone, like you said: His interview was worthless.

Apparently there's pizza and there's action, and then a little dig against the original suits.

So, like I said before, "the new movie that you're a part of hasn't done Jack & Sh*t to prove that it'll even compete with the original 1990 film, other than maybe an April with Bigger Tits."

So you're saying that you've never judged anything before fully seeing it?

That's the reason that they release info to the public or allow actors to talk about their upcoming roles. So we can judge and hopefully like what we hear and get excited. The fact that with this movie it's having the opposite affect for a lot of people is just one of those things.

Yeah, you can say "I don't wanna see it" based on what's been shown, and that's fine. But to say it can't compare with the 90's movie is the problem because, again, it hasn't been released yet.

This article I felt didn't honestly give us anything. It is him singing the praise of how great it is going to be. That doesn't surprise me, and frankly I wouldn't expect him to say anything different. He is an actor who probably hopes if they make a sequel he will have work again. Everyone knows what happened with Fox when she spoke out against Bay.

Anyway the only thing remotely kind of interesting about this article is him saying it is family friendly. That means it is probably going to be in the same tone as the cartoon or older movies. So no R rated action. Didn't expect the movie to be anything but a family film.

what made you think it was going to be anything other than a family film? I knew Bay didn't have the balls to take them seriously. The TMNT will always be pizza-eating cheeseballs in outside media.

I doubt Will Arnett, William Fichtner or Aquaman from Smallville really knows much about the franchise to really judge how true or faithful to any version the movie is.

Obviously they are all media trained to say the right thing and I'd even say that they probably believe they are making a great product that the fans will love. It's not like they know better.

I'm starting to get the idea that the people behind this movie are only grasping on the upmost mainstream elements of the TMNT and running with it.

I thought we'd all agreed long ago, based on evidence, that's exactly what they're doing with it. Which is why people can have premature opinions if they want to, because believe it or not, we really do have enough to go on to base at least a preliminary opinion on. We don't know exactly how it will come together, or how good it will end up being as a finished product, but we do know
what they're aiming for. And the target isn't very far from the ground.

For once, I wish we could leave the pizza jokes in the past. Culturally, the whole world has long since moved on from that brief period where pizza was short-hand for "stuff cool, hip kids eat". It's so dated it's embarrassing. That by itself won't kill the movie for me, but the never-ending pizza jokes were by far my least favorite thing about the old show, so I can imagine it'll be done and over-done in the movie.

Out of all the things people could and should associate with TMNT, frickin' pizza being the only thing anyone ever, ever mentions is annoying. Like nothing else ever mattered.
