He was slightly toned down but otherwise the same as the first.

I think he went psychotic about getting revenge and turned into a character you laugh at. Original Shredder said and did nothing funny. He was portrayed in a very dark way.

Everyone was a wuss in TMNT 2. Except Super Shredder... he was just stupid.

Super-Shredder can't be stupid, he was portrayed by the Single Greatest Man Who Ever Lived. Sure, he jobbed to a bunch of styrofoam logs, that just ensured that he didn't have to be in the third one. Once again, Big Kev works the system to his advantage. Freakin'. Genius.

The Mutants weren't threatening and Tatsu lost his edge that he had in the original.
Shredder being a "wuss" may have been nothing more than the result of angry parents upset over the badass in the original.

He was more in tune to his cartoon side than he was the Mirage version that the original movie was based on.

Having your skull partially crushed by the business end of a garbage truck will do that to ya. :P

Ì always, even as a kid thought that The Shredder had brain damage and was all messed up after the garbage truck incident. Hence his lack of combat and his, well, stupidity...

Made sense to me. It always bothered me that they didn't even put in a throw-away line about how he survived certain smashing. Kids ask that kind of question; at least, we all did before the entire movie went brain-numb about 5 minutes later, at which point we stopped questioning anything.

I just figure he took Mort Goldman's advice and "curled up in an ass-ball or something!"

I love this film. It had Shredder and mutants! Now, if you want a wuss in a TMNT film how about Lord Norinaga? What more could a kid ask for aside
from a decent script? It was that even with a few things hampering it like the weapons censor and being aimed at kids we can't get too much into characterization of Donatello disappointed they were just an accident.

Yeah. In the sequel all he did was stand around and tell 'get them!!!' Like in the cartoon.

We did get a line. The Foot soldiers says, "His face...." when he returns.

Edit: Cubed, that don't count for much. For all we know, the guy was about to say, "His face! It looks... pretty good, actually! Like he never even got smashed by that garbage truck's smasher-thingie like two days or a week or so ago, or whenever the hell this movie takes place after the last one!"

Well, anyway, to remark to an earlier poster, if a person really, *really* liked the first movie, "what more they could want" might be a story that built on and continued from the first in a way that made sense and at least felt like it belonged in the same spiritual universe. :P

To me, more than almost anything specific about SotO, the fact that it's a sequel in name only to a superior film is what hurts it most of all. If they made that movie 5 years after the first and pretended it had absolutely no connection, that might have worked better for everyone involved. Instead it's almost exactly like Batman vs. Batman & Robin (or Batman Forever, even); similarities being: The original was SO much better and more heartfelt. The follow-up in question was a giant cartoon where the first was darker and more story-driven. Parents groups neutered the tone. Several key actors are entirely different. The story doesn't even attempt to explain differences between the two. Taken as its own movie, the sequel is mediocre to adequate, but compared to the original or watched subsequently, it collapses on itself, exposed for the mere "product" it is. And on and on and on.

You're supposed to ignore evidence and pretend it's still the same universe, but logically, your brain knows it can't be, because nothing quite fits or resembles the earlier, superior work other than a few minor elements. The differences and flaws built into SotO don't make it a terrible film, but they do add up to make it a terrible *sequel*. Taken by itself, it's still not great (there's a lot of charming stuff but it's buried under some other bits that are just ridiculous beyond reason), but it was fairly competent. However, it was not the TMNT movie they needed to make to follow the first. It was too different, too jarring, too contradictory. It was like if they made Superman, and for the sequel instead of doing Superman II, they made what became Superman III. Everyone knows that was a bad movie, but if it was the DIRECT sequel to the first, it would have been completely unforgivable. The second film gradually lightened the tone and stretched the limits of what was possible in that universe, while still adhering mostly to the style of the original, so the sins of the third one were less egregiously noticeable.

TMNT II was that kind of movie. It wasn't terrible, but the only way it could have worked was a few years later as part of a complete reboot. The first movie was a decent all-ages action/comedy grounded in some pseudo-reality (or, "Verisimilitude"), but SotO was a kids-only slapstick farce with rock-stupid "villains", stunt-casted "Guest Stars", and nothing resembling even the loosest facsimile of reality. Which is whatever you want it to be, good or bad; but it's really awful at being a sequel. I don't think anyone could argue with that.

Shredder was planning to impale the Turtles and force Raph to watch then kill him afterwards, that would be the closest thing to his Movie 1 self.

The 1990 Shredder would have killed Raph as soon as they came face to face (because of his anger and lust for revenge?). Maybe even torture him first like they did Splinter to find out more about The Turtles. SOTO Shredder played games.

Yeah, after what happened to him earlier that week (in TMNT1) he should have been more focused on revenge and less focused on his James Bond Villain Super-Villain scheme involving his pet mutants. The intensity of his hatred was not sufficiently portrayed in the film's insistence on being silly for the sake of it.

Don't take this the wrong way, dude, but is it really that much of an effort to use decent grammar. Seriously, you spelled "girl" wrong. He didn't "kidnap" her either. He held her hostage. And, I'm pretty sure "um" is supposed to be "him." :o
