View Full Version : Do we only enjoy the show because we're already TMNT fans?

Don't get me wrong, I think this show is awesome...and not just because I already love TMNT. The writing, the humor, the action, everything is just great..so anyway, here's the reason I made this thread. One day I was watching a rant on some of Nickelodeon's current shows on Youtube (I came across it while searching for people's reactions on the new show) and the guy in the video basically just blew TMNT to the side as a stupid and uninteresting show. Now I know what you're gonna say.."It's just his opinion, not everyone will like the show.." but after watching that, almost all the videos that did give positive reviews of the show were by TMNT fans..so I'm not trying to say anything like "Everyone should like the show" or "whoever doesn't watch this show is stupid"...what I'm asking is if we only enjoy the show because we're already fans of the franchise. Like, if TMNT never existed, and then this show came on, would we even like it? Maybe I'm just over analyzing this, but I want to hear your opinions.

I think already being TMNT fans makes us appreciate it more since we get all the hidden Easter eggs and comparisons to past series.
But no, it's just a really good show. The plots aren't mind blowing or anything but its a very well made kids show with good humor and characterization. The show could have very well been bad, look at Ultimate Spider-Man. We lucked out.
I think all 3 TMNT cartoons are great for different reasons. They all do what they're trying to do very well.

I enjoy this show not just because I'm a TMNT fan, but because it's good. It has everything a good cartoon needs: A cast of awesome characters, well written humor, an interesting storyline, awesome animation, etc. So even if I wasn't a TMNT before this show arrived, I'm sure I would've still enjoyed it.
As a person that didn't start watching the show until about 14 episodes in, to it being my favorite show on TV right now; I have the mixed of reasons, but being a TMNT fan was clearly "a" reason, but not "the" reason. The main reasons being what you said, the writing is great and the show is fun and entertaining.
I feel like I'm an 8 year old again watching Turtles on Saturday Morning. I personally didn't realize how much I missed Ninja Turtles until I got caught up with the show.

Hmmm, interesting point. Honestly, as much as the new show has grown on me and I enjoy it, it's still not going to replace my favourite incarnation. I don't think if I'd never seen tmnt that I'd watch it as an adult, if I was a kid i'm sure I would but I definitely watch it now because I'm a life long fan.

I enjoy TMNT as a whole because I like the characters\premise\backstory\universe that has been created. That said, if the Nick show wasn't good then my love of what was already created wouldn't matter. The creators have done a great job of story telling with the universe Ive been a fan of for 20 years. If this was the first version of TMNT then I would still enjoy it.
Cubed brings up a good point with USM. I love Spider-Man but won't watch the new show because it isn't any good.

I can honestly say that if I hadn't developed a love of martial arts-performing anthropomorphic turtles as a little kid, there's no way I would watch this show. I hate scatological humor and most visual gags, and have the bulls**t tolerance of a drill sergeant. In fact, I'm actually a little embarrassed that I love it so much.

nope :3 I liked the 2003 version but I only watched it when it happened to come on XD I didn't try following it...and I missed alot of episodes.
but I have been following the Nick TMNT every time it comes on XD and even bought the first season on I-tunes. (I've never bought any episodes on I-tunes before)

Well if this was true then my personal enjoyment would had only come from the things that they kept consistent from the tmnt mythos rather then the changes that were made within the show. The point is that I love the style of the show more then I love the fact it's TMNT if that help makes any sense. But there are days when I wonder if I'll still love this ten years down the road when the there is a new version of tmnt on the horizon.

No.
This is a good show like its spiritual predecessor Teen Titans was a good show. Truly functional all-ages entertainment (as opposed to "just kids" entertainment).
I mean, yes, it's a kids' cartoon. But it's so successful in what it goes for that I dare anyone to watch it and not enjoy it on some level.
I do believe it has a lot to do with being TMNT fan just like most franchises all the good reviws come from the fans the bad are not. If i was not a fan i prob would think dif about it.

At 28, I probably would not watch this show if I wasn't familiar with TMNT; these days, I only tend to watch cartoons if they have characters with whom I'm familiar. However, as a longtime fan, I can say this series definitely does some things that no others accomplished; mostly, it really lives up to the "teenage" part. It's also got a unique sense of humor that plays more with conversation than past brands.

Being a TMNT fan is why I was looking forward to it. The fact that I like the show a lot is why I continue to watch it.
Same can't be said for a large portion of 2k3. I liked 2k3, but not enough to go out of my way to watch or rewatch it like I do NickTurtles.
To be honest, probably yes. Although if it happened to be on, I'd watch it. Korra on the other hand, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for (and I'm a far bigger TMNT fan).

Remember, during the beginning, we all egged on this show before it aired, because we were TMNT fans, and what Nick was doing seemed like a radical departure from what we've seen before. They won us over because the show is GOOD. The humor, which is thankfully not toilet humor, the action, and the characters, are all well done. This show has also even created new TMNT fans. The only ones that don't like the show are the diehards of previous incarnations, or just too prejudiced to give this show a chance.

I had an arguement with a guy on YouTube about the show.
He was all, "OH BUT THE REAL LEO WOULDN'T READ COMIC BOOKS BLEH BLEH BLEH".
I'm pretty sure the guy saw a dumb episode like Turtle Temper and wacked the series around for one episode.
Yup, Ultimate TROLLLL.
But no, it's not because we're already TMNT fans. I might not have watched the show if I didn't already know about TMNT, though xD

It's not just because I'm a TMNT fan either. I was largely out of TMNT for about a decade before I watched the new show, to see if it was any good. I've kept watching it because it is good.
It led me to look for more Turtle things on the 'net, finding this site and starting on the IDW comics. Despite having been a big fan when I was little, I wouldn't have done any of that if I didn't enjoy the Nick show for what it is.

Yeah...I have to agree with this. I don't watch cartoons at all anymore unless its a new incarnation of something I previously liked, (like a new Batman or X-men cartoon, etc.), so I agree with this.
If this was a brand new franchise and Nick's TMNT was the first time TMNT ever existed, I'm not sure I would have ever gotten into it. Maybe if I had kids down the road and they watched it though

No because I was leery when I heard Nick had bought the franchise and I was sure they would ruin it. But after giving it a chance, I really found I liked the show and never missed an episode. I definitely think it's the best incarnation they have going right now, and Ciro and crew are awesome with how they've handled it. Can't wait for more.

I think that because we are fans of the franchise we can't answer this objectively. Though I'm inclined to believe that no, there are probably a lot of people who also enjoy the show that aren't long standing fans of the turtles. However I also think that for some people the concept behind the TMNT may appear to be childish, and without a previous exposure to the franchise, they might dismiss it entirely because of it. So I couldn't really tell you.
I once posted some gifs on reddit and most of the people there had not seen the show. A couple were even turned off by the animation style. Others, however, were more receptive and said they would start watching it to see if they dug it. The post wasn't that popular to be honest, so I didn't get much data xD
If you are really interested in gouging this series success, I would recommend you to go to different sites and start asking around for people's opinions. Here you are only going to get (mainly) positive opinions about it.

Exactly. And we all saw what happened when they introduced the Pulverizer. There's always going to be characters/episodes that are loathed.
If I hadn't have been a fan of the '87 series I wouldn't have bothered to look up the current series. As a general rule I don't tend to watch television. And bar TMNT, there's only two other programs that I specifically make sure I watch.
That being said, I love this series more than I ever loved the '87 one. A million times over.
I don't mean to disrespect any of the previous series because they all brought something new to the franchise that appealed to different people. But I think the Nick series is more universally appealing and it combines all the best elements of every other series to date.

Nope. I was pretty much done with TMNT before the cartoon premiered, and had every intention of avoiding it. But I caught the first couple of episodes, and it was pretty good, so I gave it a try. Now I'm only halfway through the first season, but it's already probably my favourite incarnation of the Turtles.

This was my reflex. I hate anime and the anime-fication of oh, everything, that's been going on in the past several years, so my initial reaction to seeing the turtles portrayed with anime-style reactions was to throw the remote at the TV. I got over it, and it's actually amusing most of the time now.

I had already watched Teen Titans before this so I was used to it by now. Thankfully the anime expressions are more toned down here than in TT.
Cubed brings up a good point with USM. I love Spider-Man but won't watch the new show because it isn't any good. How do you know it isn't any good if you don't watch it? It's a fun show.
I think this show is absolutely mediocre, which is why I really don't post too much at all here because I have no interest in this show. I think fans make it a lot better then it actually is. It is decent but not that good. It just has average to low animation and it also just seems like a monster of the week show that was primary just made for a children's toyline. Kind of like the anime TMNT. It is a kid's show though and that is to be expected. Especially from Nickelodeon, which is I am sure the main reason they bought ninja turtle is to collect money from the merchandise mainly.
I also think most TMNT movies, comics, cartoons are rather just ordinary to crap though. I enjoy some of it just because I am a fan but when you start looking closer or looking back they all are pretty cheesy and just not that good.

For me, yah. You'd not believe the kind of reaction I had to seeing what the 2012 versions looked like but stayed tuned any ways cuz the title if this thread says all  However, I am glad I did as I'm really enjoying it and I think as the show goes on they'll become better and more developed, Leo in season 1 was a leader in training, I think in season 2 that will change, think hey'll become more serious with his training and skills due to the events in the finales and maybe a bit darker. Donnie over time will lose his crush on April and become more mature when it comes to saving lives. I'm hoping for Mikey, he becomes less of a clown and becomes a better fighter, improve himself. Don't know about Raph, work on his anger issues

Even though I have been a fan forever it seems, I think I would still like this show even if I wasn't a TMNT fan originally. As mentioned previously, I'm not a fan of Next Mutation just because it's TMNT, just as others don't like the 2k7 movie (I do, but that's besides the point), or TMNT 3 (it's ok...). I think this show is great. I was honestly sad when I heard Nick had bought it, worried about what would become of the turtles, and I didn't like the fact that they had made April a teenager. But then Sept 29, 2012 came and I decided to watch it, and was instantly hooked. I love what Nick has done with the Turtles. I love the animation, the fighting, their personalities, the writing, the jokes, the emotion. I hardly watch TV at all. TMNT is the only show besides Futurama that I am watching right now (although when Korra comes back next month I will be watching that too). So that says something for me. If a show is well written with a good story and engaging characters, I will watch it.

I'd honestly I wouldn't watch it, and wouldn't buy the IDW comics either. The comics I mostly buy are Batman-related, so I buy these new TMNT comics cause I'm a TMNT fan, and I like them finally having a regular monthly on-going series (Mirage's Volume 4 was almost years apart, and Tales of the TMNT jumped all over the place continuity-wise).
As for the cartoon, I find myself too busy to watch or care about cartoons nowadays, so I'm sure I woulda passed on this thinking it was some stupid silly show. However, as a TMNT fan, when it comes to a TMNT cartoon, I don't care, I MAKE time to watch it.
So yeah, big chance I wouldn't really give a damn unless I was already a TMNT beforehand.

I wouldn't have watched it if I was not a TMNT fan. Even as a TMNT fan, I thought that the Nick 3D style was ugly, especially April. I usually don't like 3D cartoons because most of the time there is no real backgrounds, the design is pretty basic, cheap animation, etc.
But well I forced myself to watch the first episode, because I wanted to give a chance to this new series.
And I found it fun and the scenario well-written, and got used to the design (even if I still think that the rendering of human faces are usually awful and that Dogpound and Fishface look like pokemons).
And so I like the Nick series now, but I wouldn't have checked that first episode if it wasn't TMNT.

Being an old warhorse with the Turtles, when I first saw images and the first trailers I thought it was going to blow but man was I wrong. From the first episode I couldn't get enough. It's just so well done and a love note to every turtles incarnation with so many things pulled from here and there. I go to a friends house and watch it with him and he wasn't a fan in the least but after the show he's become a huge fan of all things Turtles. So no, I don't think we ALL like it just because. It is damn good.

If I was never a TMNT fan and didn't have a 4 year old, no I would probably not give this show any attention. However, with the kid, I have found cartoons that I do enjoy as an adult and make a point to tune in if I see they're on. The best example of this would be Gravity Falls that someone started a thread about last week. TMNT would have been one of these shows and with my son's obsession with Spongebob (who I now despise) we would have definitely found out about it.
That being said, given my TMNT background in the 80s/90s and the fact that as a young adult I made a point to watch the 2K3 series until it started to suck (Fast Forward), I would have gone out of my way to catch this new series even if there were no children in my home.

Basically exactly what I was going to say to the original post.
I didn't care for 4kid's version (although after being here I'm slightly more interested in the first season or arc), I was never able to sit through the 3rd film or any Next Mutation episode.
So, as much as I love the TMNT, I dont just blindly enjoy anything with it's brand on it for the sake of the name and characters.
I was skeptical on the show, despite everyone here seemingly loving it.
But I saw 1 copy of the DVD at Walmart for $9.99 so I got it... and I was surprised it was really good!
It appeals to my old school Turtle love and feels like it's meant for us while still feeling like it's for the kids (such as always having a moral to the story, like when Donatello can't figure out how to not think and just flow in a fight). Some really good and actual life teachings from Splinter which often become the focus or point of the episode. I dig hearing actual wisdom from the show and makes me feel better about the younger fans and hopefully they take more from the show than just Mikey being funny lol
Splinter's philosophy matches actual life philosophy that are followed and practiced. Much of Splinter's teaching are echos of what my own instructors have taught me, what zen masters said to me, and what I have heard the like of Bruce Lee say in interviews and in his movies.
OT Splinter had a few moments and he'll always have a close place to me but the Nick Splinter is badass and i was originally not crazy on him based on the design.
Anyway, it's really well put together and that's why i'm enjoying it.

I'm not butt-hurt over anything. I just feel that the reason I despised FF was that it aired in place of season 5 and that wasted the potential of a good story arc. If it had aired after that, I probably wouldn't have minded much. But you make it sound like I'm crying my eyes out over this, and I'm not. Get over yourself please.

Fast forward was just not TMNT...and that's its major problem: It didn't resemble anything that would be associated with Ninja Turtles!
Even the very premise shows you those guys were completely out of ideas. Turtles in the future! Wow! They don't even do anything clever like a Turtles in Time adaptation or something, no they were just losing it.
TMNT 2012 completely captures everything that is right and fun with Turtles and Fast Forward does the exact opposite: getting rid of the focus for the main characters, in favour for terrible new ones.
And don't even get me started on Back to the Sewer.....:(

Actually I was thinking, because we are turtle fans to begin with it may have been harder for us to enjoy the show with all our prior experiences and expectations.
But fingers crossed, Nick's got a winner so far

This. Nick has well exceeded my expectations with the show.

Ya, I was making the same point. I don't love anything with the TMNT brand on it.
And most of you guys may know that, since I joined here, I still hadn't seen one episode of the new show until within the past month or so.
Just finished watching Enter Shredder DVD... wish there were more episodes per disc :-/ hah
Pretty good. I'm still not crazy about Dogpound.
It's interesting, also, that Mikey has regressed from "party/surfer" dude to the youngest as personality goes. He acts younger then he is.
He's still silly, and that's the point, so he still kinda matches up. I just find it interesting he had the most drastic character change out of the brothers.
I really like Splinter here though, and I have never been a "fan" of Splinter.
I liked Kevin Clash's Splinter, I liked to OT Splinter, but the Nick one is pure badass awesome.

Everyonehasopinions.
Not knocking your opinion here, but it's not a monster-of-the-week show. You probably just saw a couple of bad episodes and figured that the show was mediocore by, what? Two episodes? You've probably not seen the actual storyline. Might I recommend episodes like "The Gauntlet", "Operation: Breakout", or "Enemy of my Enemy"? Those are ones that follow the actual storyline, and not any freak-of-the-week episodes, (which are probably the ones you keep seeing -.-)
But, like I said, not bashing your opinion.

So you basically admit the reason you don't like it was because it aired out of sequence? What does that have to do with NOW or the episodes on their own merits?
That was one of the reasons I didn't like it. The other was that the many of the villains were mediocre and the plot was redundant and boring. Instead of depending on a stupid time window, there was no reason why Renet couldn't have zapped them back. I just thought it was a waste of time, and I pretty much just pretend that FF and BTTS don't exist anymore and that they were a nightmare. It doesn't have anything to do with what's happening now, but you act like I'm constantly talking about it when I'm not. However, you constantly are butt-hurt about the REAL Krang showing up or Bebop, Rocksteady, or any other OT character. Looks like you need to take your own advice and get over it, but we all know you won't. I was just saying that the guy has an opinion, and you act like we all have to conform to your way of thinking. That's not the way life works, dear. I used to be like you, but I grew up and realized that everyone has their own opinion on things. You need to do the same.
will you stop? if youve got that big of and issue with his dislike of fast forward, the private message button is right up there. this is like the 10th thread ive been on where youve caused an argument, you need to just relax and quit looking to start them.
For future reference, I'm a girl.

I feel sorry that you like to "pretend something as a nightmare" in regards to those seasons. Many of those episodes are better than the average fillers of the Nick show.

Well, that's your opinion, but I respectfully disagree with you on that. Now, stop trying to get me to conform to your opinion and drop it. I didn't like FF and BTTS, and that's that.

That pic had nothing to do with who believes in what, it's about being outraaaaageous.
People need to lay off 'Cubed, at least a little. I agree with absolutely everything people find off-putting, but for some reason he entertains me. When I see his name as the most recent poster in any thread, it's an automatic must-read.
I also don't think he's actually trying to instigate all this angst in people, it just happens by accident, and it seems like he has no internal filter and has legitimately no idea what is and isn't appropriate. Why everyone takes it all so seriously is beyond me.
Nobody that likes Batman THAT much can be all bad. Give the guy a break.
Wait, he doesn't read comic books... nevermind what I said before, f*ck that guy and everyone who lives in his house.

Being a TMNT fan is why I was looking forward to it. The fact that I like the show a lot is why I continue to watch it.
Same can't be said for a large portion of 2k3. I liked 2k3, but not enough to go out of my way to watch or rewatch it like I do NickTurtles.
Here I was thinking it was thinking that it was better than the rest. It's always been my favorite.

If I hadn't watched it as a kid, I probably wouldn't watch it now.
...
But that's really hard to say, 'cus I have watched shows for the hell of it because friends suggest it.
I think, no matter what, I would have ended up watching, and loving, TMNT at somepoint.

I know, but I thought I'd clarify anyway.
I thought he was entertaining at first, but now he just annoys me with how he tries to force his opinions down everyone's throats and act like everyone else is wrong for thinking differently. It's fine if you like something, but it's another thing to act like people can't have their own opinions and they have to like everything about TMNT. That's just my take on it. The guy really needs to get some priorities and perspective.

It kinda went in waves, for me. Entertaining, then kinda "WTF dude," then entertaining again. Lately, rather than letting people bother me, I try and appreciate the eclectic mix of personalities we have here. Even if they repeat themselves often and miss the point of jokes made at their expense.
That's his gimmick. Mine is gallows humor and esoteric thesis paper replies to comments that aren't worthy of such effort. GK thinks he's Wolverine, and XERO once did 8 months for pimpin' hoes outside a Burger King. These quirks are what makes everyone here such a unique, beautiful little snowflake.

This is a little difficult to say. I really do love the Nick series. I still keep track of a few current cartoons that aren't remakes or sequels of ones I've watched before. So....maybe I guess.
I'll say this though, I've introduced a (girl)friend of mine to the Turtles recently via the 2k12 series. From what little she's seen so far, she really likes it. She did see a few episodes of the original but never got into it. I'm not sure she can recall any of the original.

I definitely think I would have still liked the show had I not known about the franchise previously. After all, I don't like every version of the TMNT out there. But this one hits all the right notes for me, so that's all I'd need to enjoy it.
Now, would I have ever actually started watching it without any previous attachment to the franchise? I'll be honest: absolutely not. First off, I don't watch a ton of cartoons, but secondly - and say what you want, it's just how I feel - I generally don't care for CGI shows/movies. While they do allow for a more consistent look, I usually just feel they lack *something*, and my first impression of the look of the show was a pretty bad one. It wasn't until I saw the Turtles in motion that I changed my tune, but even then I still greatly dislike most of the human designs.
So if someone could have gotten me to sit down and watch it, I know I would have still liked it, but actually getting me to give it a shot would have been a LOT harder.

I try to do the same thing, but there's only so much I can take of it when it's about forcing an opinion down someone's throat and acting like that opinion is all there is instead of appreciating that other people DO think differently and don't have the same outlook. I tried to give FF a chance when it came out and stayed with it because it WAS Turtles and it was all we had. But after it was over, I knew I'd never get the DVDs for that series because it wasn't my cup of tea. Same with BTTS, which tried to go back to the earlier seasons, but still lacked things with Splinter being stuck in cyberspace and Serling coming home with the Turtles. I think those elements could have been nixed. But since we didn't get BTTS on DVD anyway, I really didn't care because I wasn't going to buy it.
Again, just my outlook. You don't have to agree with me on it, and it's okay if you don't.

I can kind of see where you're coming from. Admittedly, it does slightly bother me when a few fans try to make this cartoon a lot better than it is and that's not a good thing in my book because it could lead to others who aren't fond of this show thinking that it's overrated which I don't want for this show.
There are many things about this show that they do right compared to the 87 cartoon. Thankfully, they don't give them the multi-colored wrist, elbow, and knee pads as well as the initialed belt buckles, they eat pizza but not excessively, the Shredder is a menacing foe as opposed to a goof, and there's actual action where they can use there weapons and hurt people like the 03 cartoon. The main thing I kinda have against this show is that I still think it needs to find it's own identity and work with it. When it does though, it does a really good job. I still enjoy 2k3 way more than this show primarily because I like the way the storylines are portrayed in that show but 2k12 is easily better than the 87 series for me. As much as I love 87 for introducing me to the series, it has aged quite a bit for me.
