View Full Version : 2003 Mikey V.S 2012 Mikey: Which do you like better?

I'm not a fan of either versions, to me it seems like 2003 version was just a little bit more serious than the 2012 one, that's just me. So, I myself have to chose the 2003 version instead, 2012 one doesn't seem to know how to take things seriously, even in the worst situations, what about you?

Both version are significantly dimwitted, but 2K3 is far worse when his cockiness is added into it (i.e. Battle Nexus anyone?) and frankly he's just bothersome.
2012 Mikey wins because his humor seems more genuine rather than 2K3 Mikey's attempt which is more annoying.

Maybe it's just cuz I watched the trailer for the season one finale and few episodes and look back at a few 2003 episodes :ohwell:

2012. there was that one episode when he showed his wise self.
when he told raph
"the hearts a soft muscle. soft muscles squish"
that being said, shocked me and made me realize he's smarter then he leads on.

Anyway, I really could care less about either, but since I figure I should choose, it's 2k12. 2k3's voice aggravates the s**t out of me.

Nick Mikey is by far the best for me. I get many more LOLs out of him than I did the 2k3 character. But to compare either of them to OT Mikey (stoner Mikey- HA) would be a tough one for me because he's so classic!

I love Nick Mikey the best because he's not a cocky jerk who likes to rub things in his brothers' faces. He also has a lot of compassion and is smarter than people give him credit for. 4Kids Mikey just annoyed the hell out of me after the Battle Nexus arc, and I just wanted to punch him in the face. But I just want to hug Nick Mikey.

IDW Mikey for the win!:lol:but since your asking about 2k3/2k12 Mikey then I would have to go with nick's Mike, there is a kindness and empathy to him that I thought was severely lacking in 4kids Mikey after a few seasons.
Not to mention 4kids Mikey become just about intolerable after his battle nexus win.It makes me sad though his character had so much potential,if only they didn't use him to carry a majority of the very bad jokes in the show and in some ways I find him much more intelligent and self aware than nick Mikey so far.

2012 Mikey. 2003 Mikey's humor seemed forced to me, what with the serious atmosphere and all. Since the 2012 show is still light the humor fits better.

2012. Let me count the ways:
1: Adorable-It Came From The Depths especially
2: Actually funny- "the hearts a soft muscle, man." I'm like, Mikey's serious! But then "Squish." I just lost it.
3: Greg Cipes' awesome voice acting. This is half the reason BB is my fav Titan.
4: Booyakasha!
5: uses nunchaku and kusarigama
6: pizza cravings is more realistic.
7: did 2k3 Mikey ever do a victory dance as well as 2k12?
8: Makes accurate predictions (TCRI) unlike CyberCubed:lol:

LOL, I will NOT disagree with you, GuitarRaph! Wow, a lot of haters here, too. I have to go with 2K3 Mikey, on the grounds that Nick Mikey was SO dumbed down that he seems to be there merely to be cute and funny, and little else. Even with his flaws (and I admit he has plenty) 2K3 Mikey had much more depth to him. I actually liked it when he was rubbing it in about the BN win, because I felt it showed how badly he feels the need for respect from his family, and especially his wish to be treated as an equal rather than "the kid". I don't really see any of that in the new Mikey. They both have shown compassion and empathy (LH and Klunk for 2K3, and LH again in Nick), but the 2K3 version could still be serious when needed, and was not nearly as incompetent or out of his league when on his own or forced to rely on his own abilities as Nick's Mikey appears to be. (The Christmas Aliens and some of his other spotlight eps showed this.)
I also (Don't hate me for this! I'm a "strange bird" sometimes, LOL!) actually LIKED some of his jokes- I often found them real groaners, but that was part of what made him funny in that one. He had an off-the-wall and slightly tongue-in-cheek sense of humor in it, unlike the more simple and "gag" related humor of Nick. His jokes in 2K3 were often pop-culture based, or made snarky fun of stereotypes (That moment when he's complaining about wearing the alien "dress" because it clashes with his headband? Priceless!) instead of just being straight-up one-liners or unintentional humor. (Like that heart joke in O:B-O in Nick)
And even though he eventually got a bit grating at times in 2K3, that was really the fault of the writers trying too hard to keep him from straying too far from his original persona there, not the fault of the character himself. I try to keep an objective view of him, and remember that even in later seasons, he still had his crowning moments of glory, in spite of the occasional attempts to "regress" his character back to status quo. So far, I've seen little development at all of the Nick version. We've seen some of his basic personality traits, but not much to show him actually achieving his potential as a character. If anything, he seems likely to remain stuck in the role of "adorable joker". Plus, he still gets slapped for being dumb- but now you are supposed to feel sorry for him, because in this case, it's because he IS dumb. I really don't see how he's "smarter than he lets on" as some have claimed. When he has moments of intelligence in Nick, it seems more accidental than anything, and to me, that's just sad....

I do think the Nick needs to be a little more careful with how "dumb" they make this Mikey
cause in some episodes Nick Mikey seems smarter than other episodes. (which I think is weird)
but it's only the first season :) they have plenty of room to make Nick Mikey wise up a little and I have no doubt that they will.
all I know is right now Nick Mikey has a lot of heart and compassion and it shows. He's still dangerous in a fight and gets serious when he needs to protect his brothers.

I think the reason Nick Mikey is smart in some episodes and not so smart in others is probably because of the different writing styles. Same goes with how 2K3 Mikey could be nice in some episodes and a downright jerk in others.
Duckie, I understand what you mean by 2K3 Mikey wanting to be recognized as a good fighter, but I feel that they went about it the wrong way. Also, he would learn a lesson in one episode and regress back to being a jerk in another one, which really grated on my nerves.
MsMarvelDuckie
08-06-2013, 04:32 PM
That was my point. They focused too much on his "funny" side in some eps, and the writers were a bit inconsistant. But overall, I found him more interesting. The new show has pegged him as the "cute goofball dunce" to such a level that they can't even believably make him grow as a character- because he's permanently stuck in the intellectually stunted role they made him for. Anything they do now to change him in that respect will seem fake and forced.

2k13 Mikey hands down, since I find his character much more endearing and appealing. I wouldn't say I dislike Mikey from the 2K3 version though, in fact he's still my favourite Turtle of the four in that series so far.
As much as he's portrayed with some attention problems I wouldn't say that makes him dumb at all though, considering his age - in fact he sort of reminds me of a few guys I tutored back in high school. His personality is very much like most extroverted, fun-loving, and innocent-hearted teenagers his age in our own modern world, and I'd say Nickelodeon executed that realistic personality in Michelangelo very well without making him downright irritating.
Not to keep defending his intelligence, but in a sense the 2k12 Mikey shows the most potential for being a fighter than his brothers if he only learned to focus and keep his concentration on one thing at a time. For the most part, (as far as it's also very humorous) we'll usually see him in the background staring off and/or what appears to be him zoning out, but yet usually he's completely aware of everything that going on around and in front of him.
I think Nickelodeon's got some big character development plans for Mikey as with the other Turtles, and I can't wait to see what they have in store for each of them.

I voted 2k3 Mikey, because he needs some love :tlove:
The 2012 Mikey is funnier, but he's like a retarded child, he never understands anything, he's really dumb. Funny, but dumb.
So ok, Mikey 2k3 is not so funny, but the whole series are more serious, so it was not a problem for me, I liked him. Especially the SAINW version which is not funny at all

In just the span of one season, the 2012 Mike has grown more than 2003 Mike did, from being essentially a 10-year old in the first few episodes to becoming more competent by taking some risks, and also has the added bonus of being funnier (along with a catchphrase and pizza to throw a bone to the OT fans). I don't miss those girly screams and simply telling references over humor, but having a pet and enjoying Space Heroes are nice additions to Nick Mike's style of living.

2K12 Mikey nailed the annoying littlest brother but I can't really hate him because he's adorable.
2K3 Mikey... not so much. I can't feel sorry for him when he constantly complains he lost his cool toys because Karai destroyed their lair when the rest of his brothers lost the same important things for them but had to clench their teeth because there's really nothing they can do about it. And then BTTS when he shows the least concern for Splinter. I have to say it's really the 4Kids writer's fault. I think they don't know how to write kids, who Mikey was supposed to be.

I prefered Klunk, his pet form 2k3.
I didn't see any evolution in the 2012 Mikey, he's still as dumb as before in the last épisodes (trying to put his fingers on the Krang computer while Donnie is trying to make it work, etc, it was a behavior of a 5 years old child).

Little hard for me to choose honestly. Both versions I find a bit over the top and annoying. Tho the 2k12 Mikey is funnier to me for some reason, so I picked him. Also Splinter's jabs at 2k12 Mikey crack me up too!

Easily Nick Mikey. I've gone into why I don't care for 2003 Mikey in other threads, but I like Nick's Mikey because I actually find him funny and kind of adorable. He can be a bit dim at times, but not so much that it distracts me. Also Greg Cipes does an amazing job with his voice! Besides, I'm hoping that this leaves him open for some really great development as the series goes on - it may not happen, but the potential is there.

2012's Mike is cute... but I still prefer the 2003 (pre-battle nexus) Mikey. It seemed like after the whole nexus storyline, Mike lost any and all character development he'd had, and reverted back to the annoying immature dope that needs to be gibbs-smacked (if you watch NCIS, you know what I mean). I had hoped that he would have matured a bit after the nexus and some of their other adventures.

2k3. Nick Mikey just comes off like the child of the group from what I've seen. Even in one of the first episodes he said something that was just thrown in to show that he's slow. Mikey isn't supposed to be a retard... Yeah 2k3 Mikey was annoying at times, but he has had many moments throughout the series and has even demonstrated that he can potentially be the best turtle. But I don't think it's fair to say, considering the 2012 series just got done with their first season as opposed to an entire series that 2k3 Mike starred in.

No, he wasn't. He had his fears, same as all of them, but he ALWAYS faced them, and was far less "dumb" than the newer version. He had a few "blonde moments", to be sure, but was more culture-savvy than his brothers, which is itself a kind of intelligence. He also faced quite a few dangers on his own, and when he DID have to go it alone, he always came out on top, even with less "smarts" to work with than say, Don or Leo. He was just as competent as the others, unlike Nick's Mikey, who apparently couldn't even remember the instructions Donnie gave him for the antidote to the wasp venom for long!

2003 Mikey all the way. His hate is baffling while the love for 2012 Mikey is equally as baffling.
2012 is voiced rather well and he does get some laughs out of me but most of the time he is flat out, straight up obnoxiously annoying and stupid. His idiocy is played up way to much so that he borders on being genuinely mentally handicapped. He's like the Forest Gump of the Turtleverse. He is the one major irk I have with the Nick show.
I'll take Mikey bragging a little (something I think fans exaggerate to the point of it being ridiculous) over a hyper-active short bus rider any day of the week.

most of Mikey's moments aren't dumb they are silly.
dumb is when you don't understand something
silly is being random (naming his toes, ect)

I'm not denying he has his moments, but I just find his portrayal in the new show to be over the top and annoying most of the time. To each his own I guess.

Hmmm, I love how so many will bash on the flaws of 2K3 Mikey, but then rush to defend the more "immature" and (IMHO) dumbed-down version in Nick. We ARE talking about the same (basic) character here, after all. In 2K3, he had a few moments of what most perceive as arrogance- though I think it's far closer to a (again, IMHO) well-deserved bragging right of finally being taken seriously as a fighter and an equal to his more focused brothers. That's just part of the character- the need to be treated as a valued member of the team rather than just "bait" or "distraction", which is unfortunately his often-pegged role. He wanted respect, and with the oft-hated BNC arc, he finally got it- at least for a short time. Yeah, he rubbed it in to the point of being slightly obnoxious about it, but then again, who WOULDN'T?! Most anyone in that position would probably take the low road and act the same way once they had even a SLIVER of validation like he did.
Nick's Mikey doesn't appear to even TRY. He simply "skates" through every situation on his goofiness, oblivious to the fact that his own brothers (and even Splinter) don't even respect him. That's really sad. Raph bullies him relentlessly, but he's so clueless that he doesn't even try to stand up for himself for the most part. And there's a good reason the others face-palm so often when he talks. It's because more often than not, he says something really dumb. He's the "Captain Obvious" of the group, with a side of "so dumb he's cute" kind of character. It's kind of -off-putting, honestly. I like his VA (I LOVE Beast-Boy!), but it's not enough to make me truly enjoy the character in Nick. Actually, Raph and Donnie are tied for my fave turtles in this version. Even Leo beats him out in the Nick series, which is the first time Mikey has EVER been my least favorite. Every other version, he's my first.

I can't believe how everyone's hating on 2k12 Mikey. It's only been 1 season, and it's been said many times that he has ADHD in this incarnation.

Ah, thanks. That totally slipped my mind. I actually haven't re-watched the first episode since it aired. Maybe I ought to.

I like them both, certainly better than Mikey in this one. Raph reminds me of the OT version in some ways, but still has some of the Mirage/movie/2K3 anger issues, which is a nice balance, to me. And he's still a smarta$$, though at times he seems to come off as a jerk. Casey will probably be a bad influence, LOL! I like his new VA, too, so I'm happy with him. This is probably the first time (besides the OT) he's ever been one of my top faves. (Before, he was second in the OT behind Mikey.)
Donnie is your basic lovable geek here, as he always seems to be, and I think his crushing on April is sweet, and funny. Having Rob Paulson doing his voice is an added bonus, LOL!! Somehow it seems to fit here. I always had him as third behind the others for whom I liked in earlier versions (except the movies, where he was second to Mikey) but now I'm LOVING him!
Oddly enough, 2K3 had Leo as my second fave (mostly because of his Usagi and Ancient One eps), so I've kind of had all of them switching off that spot at various points.

Actually, in Turtle Temper, he gave it back to Donnie when Don hit him.
Mikey: Ow! You don't have to keep doing that.
Don: There was a spider on you.
Mikey: Well, there's a spider on you, too. C'mere, man! *tackles Don and starts hitting him*
So, he certainly didn't just let it pass when Don bullied him. 2K3 Mikey never gave the abuse back when Raph was dishing it out. He just let it go on.

actually there was a Spider on him, but it was so small and black you pretty much can't see it. It was suppose to be foreshadowing to Spiderbytes.

are you sure? cause I just checked and there was no spider on Mikey XD
Donnie just wanted to see what's it's like to smack Mikey (since Raph and Leo did it)
but I guess only Leo and Raph can get away with it XD
They made 2012 Mikey an absolute idiot.

Yeah I notice now, Mikey saw the Spider and even mentioned it when they got there. Donnie hit him because he scared him when he turn back sharply.

im the opposite. while i understand this new version of donnie and see how it fits, i still prefer 2k3 donnie. i just dont care for 2k12 version being so highstrung and quick to snap and also dont really care for his new design.
i liked 2k3 donnie, always being patient and focused and kind.
with 2k3, donnie was my favorite turtle, but hes moved down since 2k12

that happened with my sister.
Donnie was always her fav turtle, but the April thing got on her nerves
so now her favorite is Leo then Mikey :3
though my sister likes Donnie highstrung XD it makes her laugh.
I like both Donnies....but 2012 Donnie would be perfect if his crush on April was more subtle like the 2003 Donnie

really? thats kinda funny, cause the april crush doesnt bother me. i kinda like that added to his character.
what i dont like is that they seemed to REALLY accentuate his nerdiness, rather than just make him intelligent.

I love how Don can get angry and irritated when under pressure. It bring a new side to his character. 2K3 Donnie was lame, and his episodes bored me to tears, but I have loved the Don episodes for 2K12 very much.
