View Full Version : Channel 6 staffpeople

During season 1-7 of the 1987 show, Channel 6 was as well-established as the turtle's sewer lair, and the Technodrome. The building and the newsvans, and it even had its own soundtrack music.

Several people working inside where seen. But we mostly heard the names of four of them: April, Irma, Burne and Vernon. (except Blodgett) There was a yellow-haired guy (the one filming Vernon in the "Big ripoff") who appeared in many episodes, but we never knew many other names.

Why not mention the name of more Channel 6 staffpeople, exploring their characters deeper?

The blonde reporter guy who spoke with a "news accent" was in many episodes. Sometimes he had gray hair instead of blonde though.

Someone named Jeff was mentioned in Turtle Tracks and in The Wrath of the Rat King, April told the camera guy named Phil to use camera 2.

They didn't really go into much character depth for anyone on this show except the main characters, mostly. Some of the secondary characters had some depth, but not so much that they would have looked into more of the Channel 6 workers.

There was no need to. April, Burne, Vernon and Irma told us everything we needed to know about Channel 6. No point in giving depth to a lot of different reporters since that would have taken focus away from the turtles and the villains.

I do wish at times they could have at least given names to the other news anchors and staff, and say those names much more frequently, to make them appear less "random" within the Channel 6 workplace, and give the appearance of a more communal workplace.

But as Prowler said above, I wouldn't want their characters to be explored though because it would take away the show's time from the Turtles and villains.

The Channel 6 news crew was only there to supplement the human relationships of April's life since she was spending so much time with the Turtles and Splinter, which I appreciated because it gave a balance to her life from the constant sci-fi involvement whenever she dealt with the Turtles' adventures, and it gave a connection to the ordinary, mundane world of humanity that we (the audience) would be more familiar with. Plus, the crew gave some great comic relief too. :)

Not all reporters would still not need to appear in every episode.

Personally, as many characters as we were introduced to in the lifetime of the show, more reporters would just make an already long list even longer. No need.

It would save time if a group of reporters, secretaries, cameramen and even cleaning staff had been created before, just ready to use.

Yeah, but do we really NEED to meet those characters? Sure it would make sense to see them working during shots inside the building or out on live-shoots, but they just need to be background characters.

Throughout the series, up to Season 10 with an anchorman during its brief appearance in "The Return of Dregg", there have been a number of staff people, from cameraman, anchorman, reporters, and receptionists who are on duty that helps give Channel 6 a more realistic feel, yet since most aren't acquainted with April, Irma, Vernon, and Burne, they are there mainly as either background material, some information (similar to how Nick uses Channel 6), or perhaps a little banter. In a way they flow better with the main plots, or to occassionally give April time with the Turtles rather than with her staff/reporting in the field.

Exactly.

"Ready to use"...in case of what exactly? And plus, would those superfluous characters really need to be introduced beforehand, much less be remembered for a TMNT action plot? And, would the audience of children really take notice of that extraneous staff when all they basically care about is TMNT?
I understand it would make the Channel 6 character writing more "complete" Original TMNT Cartoon Fan, but with children's short attention spans, it would be a waste of time and series direction in bothering with it though. :ohwell:

Yeah, I liked how April had a life in the Fred Wolf series. In the 4Kids toon the only human she spends time with is Casey.

I agree as well. I always liked how she had a career and friends outside of the turtles. It gave her more of a personality :)

Well, her only human friend was Irma. Vernon and Burne were not her friends.

It was also nice in the OT that April actually dated outside of the main characters rather than trying to do a forced "shipping" with a main character:

There were a few episodes were April was shown to date:
-"Raphael, Drive 'Em Wild" (Season 4; goes on a date with the Premier of Vadeem at the end of the episode)
-"Enter: Mutagen Man" (Season 5; has a date with the Seymour Gutz/Mutagen Man after he becomes handsome)
-"State of Shock" (Season 8; says she dated one of the scientists she has information on).

I always cared for the show as a whole, not just the turtles.

I know lol...Burne was part of the "career" part, being her boss. Vernon was a self-absorbed coward haha

True, but Vernon serves as April's rival and Burne as her knickers in a twist boss so they also add a sense of dynamics with her character.

I also like the fact April dated, but apparently she'd rather get married to her job. IIRC she's also the oldest of the three cartoon Aprils... and she never felt she wasted her youth not settling down.

Yes, I she was about 28 in this show, and she was a career woman for sure, and seemed to feel fufilled with that.
