This just something I've been wondering for awhile. So, Mona Lisa. One of the many mutant characters that appeared in the OT. Well known by most fans for being a love interest for Raphael in "Raphael Meets His Match". Yet only appeared in one episode, and was never heard from again. Fast forward years later, and she's a popular character in fan art. I never really understood why, but it looked like something about her struck a cord in fans, and now she has her own fanbase. In fact rumors been flying that she might actually make an appearance in the 2012 (I'm taking this with a grain of salt, but I talked to someone online who claims she has an uncle who works at Nickelodeon who said she would appear in season 2. Even supposedly gave a description of what she looks like.)
What I'd like to ask our fellow fans who've been with TMNT for years and grew up alongside the OT, what is about Mona Lisa that struck a cord with fans? What was so special about her that she is still remembered to this day?

Probably because she was one of the Turtles first love interests, at least as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong. Shippers will jump all over anything that even slightly resembles flirting with another character. Not to mention the furry community and all that.

I remember as a kid thinking it was neat to have a character like that, as one of the Turtles having a possible girlfriend hadn't really been explored and Raphael seemed like the least likely one to be in that scenario. It was interesting to me and I remember thinking for some reason she was a character that would be brought back in future episodes, and it seemed puzzling that they didn't do that. So I remember thinking she was an intriguing character with potential that wasn't really fully explored.

She was cute, I never saw her as sexy though, When you had April O'Neil, you could not ask for anything else. lol.
I like Mona Lisa, a shame she appear once, but she was fun, likeable, written in the show smartly, and was a great partner to a certain turtle that dress in Red, :D.
I understood why she caught on, even though she only appear once.

I think it has more than a bit to do with the fact that, in a series with almost uniformly woeful depictions of female characters, Mona Lisa stands out as being uniquely well-constructed, in relative terms. She has agency, she's likeable enough, and the romance aspect of the episode doesn't overwrite her entire personality. The fact that she only appears once helps: not only does it mean that her fans are left wanting more, she doesn't get the opportunity to be treated with the inconsistency that more prominent characters were handled with.

Did anyone mention this yet? She was the first female mutant in the entire series. Sure we saw April briefly mutate into a cat in Season 2, but that was just a one-off thing.
Mona Lisa was the very first female mutant in the franchise.

I don't want to be cynical about Mona Lisa or her fanbase, because I like her.
I know some like to bemoan the way that female mutants supposedly bring all the creeps out to play, or bring girl cooties into storylines, but c'mon...don't blame the material for what fans do. And there are plenty of reasons why fans would like Mona Lisa besides "Tiiiittttts".
Firstly, yes, while fandom creates its own characters, some love that sense of legitimacy that comes from pairing up two characters who are official. As toned-down as it was, Raphael and Mona Lisa hand a thing going on, so for some, it's nice to experience a romance between two canon characters and to consider it further that the series actually did.
Second, she's the only female mutant, and, much as we hate to say it, a more active female character than the regulars. That makes her cool.
Third, ML has dialogue that indicates she knows who the Turtles are and is excited to be working with one of them. Which can make us older fans cringe, but for young girls watching, the idea of someone reflecting their desire to hang with the Turtles might have further drawn them to Mona Lisa.

Like the title of the episode says, "Raphael Meets His Match", I think it was because it was a great comedic twist to have someone outwit Raphael when it came to sarcasm, and since she was female it gave a flirtatious edge to the relationship as well.
And as others have mentioned, she was the first mutant female on the show.

I just noticed. The action figure looks like she's wearing a yellow swimsuit. Was that the intention and the show just decided to make her front yellow like they do when they redesign everyone?
And yes I think the main draw was she was the first ever female mutant. We have do few of them and its only natural to have more. Or are guys the only ones dumb enough to fall into an unlucky mutagen accident? I do wonder how long it will take before nick throws in a female.

It's funny, because as a kid I never thought of her as a love interest (even now I don't see it in the episode itself, though it's more obvious that it could lead to her being such). I liked her because she was a fun character. But she stood out for several reasons.
First off, as others pointed out, she was a female mutant, and those weren't (aren't) exactly great in number. On top of that she was actually kind of an interesting female, or at least as interesting as a one off character could get, anyway.
Secondly, for me, anyway, it's because of the episode she's in. As a Raph fan, I was always disappointed because I really disliked most of the episodes that focused around him - except the one with Mona Lisa. Raphael Meets His Match stood out because it was a Raph-centric episode that I genuinely liked, and therefore I remembered Mona Lisa better. Somehow throw her into Raphael Knocks'em Dead, and I probably wouldn't remember her as fondly because of my dislike for the episode.
And thirdly, again, as others have said, she didn't overstay her welcome. We didn't see her so much we got tired or annoyed with her, but she was fun enough in her one episode that she was memorable.
All this coming from a straight chick who generally doesn't much notice the female characters.

So far Mona Lisa has only appeared in one episode and had an action figure. But she never appeared in the comics. I would like to see that character brought back, but in the Nick TMNT series, Maybe IDW can bring in that character, The only problem that comic already has a female mutant.

I kinda don't see the problem there. That's like saying we can't add leatherhead since we already have 7 male mutants. I think if anyone is daring enough to break this strange taboo of 'thou shall not have more than 1 female mutant per tmnt series' and throw more in, it's IDW.

Mona Lisa was awesome because she was a character. Not just a girl for the sake of having a girl there.

Most of my reasons for liking Mona Lisa have already been said. As a kid, I thought she was great...and I still do. I loved that she was a female mutant when there were not many females on the show to begin with, and I loved how she was smart (majoring in physics) and could verbally spar with Raph ("I thought I was supposed to be the one with the clever remarks") This has to be one of the episodes I have watched the most. Plus, Raph was my favorite turtle at the time, so I loved this ep for that as well. Simply put, Mona was a fun, original character who I wished had been on the show at least once more.

A mix of many things really
- Female character in a lacking female character show
- Love interest for a turtle with an open ended story for future returns
- Closest thing to a "female turtle member" without it being a turtle and before the Venus era.
And the key factor
- She got a toy. In a line that a female character was either APRIL.... or odd one shots like Princess Mitsuko or Irma. Imagine if Lotus Blossom got a toy or Aska. They would be in the same boat.

Yeah, everyone said good reasons.
Also, Mona Lisa's a really fun character. I know the bad guys are rather lame, and the pink sea weed thingies are ridiculous, but she carried that episode well, and her banter with Raphael acting like a dork with her seals the deal. Even if she wasn't a love interest, I'd think that'd be the same interaction (I mean she's technically an adult, wasn't she in college? I doubt FW would actually pursue that even if she becomes a regular).

It was nice seeing him outwitted. Someone on his level. I also liked the fact she was female. TBH, this is one episode I remember watching when it first aired and liking it so much I deemed it one of my favs. Yeah the villain and plot left a lot to be desired, but Mona Lisa was great!
Personally, I wish she would've been around more, just like Mondo Gecko should've been around more to hang with Mikey.

She is sooo overrated.
I'm sick of seeing her in almost every fanart of Raph, really. Now I hate her I guess -_-
That furry fangirls are all over the net and create mutant females, OCs, so Mona Lisa is a cool character for them because she looks like she's coming right from a Mary-Sue fanfiction.
I watched again the episode recently, and cannot understand how people can think Raph and her are in love? it's like the yaoi fans: if they see a guy looking a bit too long in the eyes of another guy, they say they're in love and start shipping them.
During all the episode, Raph seems embarrassed by her, not attracted at all, he looks more confused than anything. Then further in the episode, they look more like "friends" I would say, but I don't see any love there, really.
I'm glad she didn't appear in other episodes (her background story was quite stupid and not realistic, even for this show, she got mutated in a really strange way...), it was a cheesy character.
I hope she won't appear in the Nick show. The Raph from Nick is not the same Raph as in the 87 series (and even in the 87 series he didn't look in love or attracted, so I can't imagine the Nick Raph having a stupid crush). I'm so glad she didn't appear in the 2003 series :) she would have been totally out of place.

I agree. It's a good thing Mona Lisa wasn't in 2K3 too. The Leonardo/Raphael shippers will literally tear her apart.
Really I pity fictional girlfriends getting the hate from fans because she's supposedly in the way of two hot men's weenies in late 90s/early 00s.

How could they know she was so popular? Most of the popularity I've seen is Internet fandom (usually between say 1998-2003, when TMNT was mostly a childhood memory for a generation of guys and girls born in the 1970's and 1980's).

Well, since she got a figure as well, I would guess that they must have seen the sales figures for those- and for the VHS tapes of that episode as well- and probably realized that she was fairly popular. In the days before internet fandom became a big thing, those would have been the prime factors in whether to include her or not. I'm guessing if they'd made more of the toys, they might have sold more of them and boosted her popularity even more. It's a shame she only got the one episode. I personally always liked her- and this was LONG before I knew anything about "shipping".

Not likely. At the time that would have happened, the internet was barely even in its infancy, so there would have been no "internet rumors" to get started. Saying it was "implied" also probably means that there WERE plans for it to happen somewhere down the line, even if those plans never saw the light of day. Again, she already had a figure, so clearly they were aware that she could appear again, or perhaps they were using the figure to determine her popularity in order to decide if she would or not.

I like Mona because I wanted to learn more about her. I also liked that she wasn't a turtle and was portrayed as self-reliant and intelligent. She didn't come onto the screen needing to be saved; she was trying to save other people. But when I was little, my favorite color was pink so that was probably why I liked her then lol :)
I do ship her with the turtles, but I'd rather see her return without being a romantic interest. I'd like to see her given a different origin and see how she deals with becoming a mutant. Does she try to keep in contact with her family and friends? What does she end up doing with her life? Can she ever become human again?

This. She'd be an awesome one to bring to 2012. Partly I guess because there is so much room for them to freely be original with her. Maybe that's also why she's popular, so open to interpretation? And was never around long enough to begin with to have ever had a chance to get stale, annoying, or stereotyped?
Much needed female character just sitting on the sidelines waiting for her chance. If they made her about the same age as the rest of them, she could be a great buddy for April.

Cubed, I hate to break it to you, but she was popular long before DeviantArt. The fan-art for her is so common BECAUSE she was popular already- not the other way around. Lots of us who grew up with that show liked her, and not just for shipping purposes. Personally, I liked her the same reasons as many others; she was smart, fun, spunky, and seemed to work well with Raph in that episode. Having her be a female mutant when there had never really been one before, also helped. And yes, it was fun to see her flirting with Raph! (Though I always thought he was just confused and unnerved by the idea of a girl liking him. He's not exactly what most girls would consider ideal BF material, given his attitude.... I'm sure he must have been aware of this, too.) The idea that she knew about the turtles and was trying to help people was cool, too.

It's also no wonder there are furry lovers considering how they got away with making these kinds of chicks back in the 80s and 90s i mean you had Cleo on Heathcliff, Mona Lisa, Gadget Hackwrench, Julie Bruin/Margot Mallard/Bimbette skunk on Tiny Toon Adventures, Minerva Mink, Lola Bunny, some of the Talespin chicks, Callie briggs and the Swat Kat girls, Kit Mambo and the Animalympics girls, Bagi from Osamu Tezuka's Bagi Monster of Mighty Nature, Aisha Clan Clan, Felicia, Jenny on Bucky o'Hare, Mutated Catwoman from the Tyger Tyger episode of Batman TAS (remember theDr. Moreau-esque episode folks where Catwoman was turned into a REAL cat-woman? i just adore her no matter how she looks), Goldie Pheasant from Rock a Doodle, Angel from Rock and Rule, Miss Kitty Mouse from Great Mouse Detective, Terayx on Dinosaucers, Colleen on Road Rovers, Mirage on Aladdin the series, Sally Acorn and Lupe on Sonic The Hedgehog, Pam and Polly from Eek the cat, Cheetara and Pumarya on Thundercats, Omaha the Cat Dancer, M'ress on Star Trek TAS etc. were all kinds of hot some have to admit, LOL.

You'd be surprised at what people could get attached to. A very famous example is Boba Fett, throughout the original trilogy he barely has any lines, his only purpose in the story is to be Jabba's delivery boy and is only reffered to by name once, right before he dies that is.
The Fred Wolf cartoon was full of incidental and trivial characters, don't be so surprised that one of them left an impact.

I think it was because she was (I think) the only female mutant in the Fred wolf series! She also had a really cool backstory of being kidnaped and then accidently mutated. So tragic!!!
She also thought she was ugly at a time when I was very worried about my own appearance... But she was actually cute! It made her more relatable to me anyway!
This also^
I really like the "Nick" style fan art of her wearing the hoodie, and I hope she appears in the new show. If they do not make her a love interest for Raph I am cool with that. But if they make her a love interest for Leo or Donnie I will be angry!!!! No joke... They get to much attention already!

I've always loved Mona Lisa! I wish they had used her more in the original cartoon series. Would've been cool to see her up against Bebop and Rocksteady at some point.

Well, there's no guarantee they'd do a lot with her and bring much attention... That aside, she's not the sort of girl Leo is usually shown being attracted to though, and Donnie, I dunno.. I could see him in other versions taking notice of her, but this Donnie probably can't see past April anyhow.
If they were to bring her in and felt it was necessary to make her yet another love interest... she kinda belongs with Raph. Came across as the sort that wasn't intimated by him at all and prob wouldn't mind the challenge of sweetening him up a little. lol Whether they get together or not, it would be sweet to see her come back into his life after more than 20 years.
