View Full Version : Paramount Moves ‘TMNT’ To August 8, 2014

Sorry, folks... It's true.

Paramount Pictures has split up two movies that figure to pack a merchandising punch. The studio just moved from June 6, 2014 to August 8 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Nickelodeon Movies/Platinum Dunes franchise re-launch. Why the shell game that moves the picture into the back end of the summer? It’s because Paramount has its Transformers movie slated for June 27. That will likely move to June 25 as traditionally the studio has opened these Michael Bay films on the Wednesday of that week. Both of these have involved campaigns and a big merchandising component, and it was thought the studio would be better off spacing the two toy-tied films further apart than the 19 days it was looking at in the original scheduling configuration.

Pushing the date back is for the better. Having Transformers 4 and TMNT close together is too risky. And both those films need plenty of time to make a lot of money, Which they will do anyways. The film will open about a week after Guardians of the Galaxy.

Well, Having it open in August gives it a better shot since no big movie opens that month. It will however open a week after Guardians of the Galaxy. And that film which is based on the Marvel comic will do very well. So were going from a movie with a talking Raccoon with a gun, to a movie with talking Turtles that know martial arts.

I wish they could postpone the move indefinitely. I'd rather this movie never see the light of day than the potential damage to the brand it could cause.

Fine with me. It would be pretty stupid to have them competing considering bay is involved with both. Best to maximize your potential.

Sometime in the summer I think we should do a contest to guess the RT score for TMNT & transformers. I wonder which will be lower :tlol:

It’s not up against anything that week, which is good. In its original release date it was up against a Tom Cruise sci-fi film, which would have more than likely stole the number one spot from it. Now it opens a week after Guardians of the Galaxy. For now, it’s difficult to decipher whether this is a good move or not. Guardians has a lot going for it, but it also has a steep hill to climb. It’s all about the marketing for that one, as it is a completely unknown property to the masses. As for TMNT, for the first weekend at least, the brand name will be enough to sell it. But yeah, it will be interesting to see how this develops.

When more info and footage comes out for both films it will be intriguing to see whether Disney and Paramount both stay put, or whether one will get cold feet and move yet again. Don’t forget, way back when, Guardians of the Galaxy was actually scheduled to go up against TMNT when it was going to be released in May. Disney seemed to get cold feet then. It’s funny how their paths seem to be crossing yet again.

Tom Cruise isn't the box office giant he was ten years ago. I think it would've done fine there.

Guardians of the Galaxy will have Disney/Marvel promoting the hell out of it to make sure its a success. It may not be a traditional superhero movie, but it works for the sci-fi crowd very easily.

The TMNT movie feels more like an afterthought, like they're just trying to get it out there to finish the deal they made before Viacom got the license.

What Paramount is doing is a smart move, They have two of the biggest properties in there hands and they dont want both clashing with each other. Seperating the release dates for both gives both franchises plenty of time to catch its audience. When you think about it, Transformers and TMNT attract the same audience. Those who grew up watching the original shows in the 80s, Who are all grown up and have kids, So they will take there kids to see these movies.

True, Sometimes a studio would push back a release date to announce the movie being converted to 3D, Which they haven't for this. But you never know.

Andrew NDB
08-15-2013, 01:35 PM
They couldn't even begin to reverse engineer the 3D element until Paramount is done with all the CGI on the motion-capture Turtles... and you can bet they'd be working on that and fine-tuning that until pretty much the last minute.

That is disappointing that we have to wait a little longer. I did not know that Transformers 4 was coming out in the summer of next year. Has that one even started filming? I thought November. I understand not wanting its two tent poles to not run into nor another but why not push Transformers back ot mid July and not have Ninja Turtles be the one to have to be moved?

So Bay was filming two at the same time? Never followed Transformers so I cannot not say anything about the movies, but wouldn't the studio want to give a solid weekend to a perspective franchise opposed to another one that may not have to come out at the earl May to July 4th time frame? By the end of July only the mediocres are usually held out. I am a little concerned about timing with the releease and yeah it looks like the studio is playing favorites with Trnasformers opposed to the franchise I long followed.

Usually, but the earlier delays were production-related (reworking the script, etc.)... this is the first delay that is solely based on scheduling. And it's not so much that they don't have faith in TMNT Part 5 (although I don't, and neither should you) as much as it is slotting it on a date that maximizes the profitability.

As long as the movie comes out I'll be fine. That said, this is most definitely favoritism. Even worse that it's favoritism towards a **** movie franchise. Oh well, like I said, as long as this movie sees release, I'll be fine. They've passed the point of no return, so this movie will be released...eventually. It probably won't do well at the box-office, but then again, no matter when they released it next year it would have been going up against something stronger audience-wise.

That said, no matter how this movie turns out, I want it to be considered a financial success. I don't think it failing would kill the franchise, but it wouldn't help it. I'd rather this franchise live with a sub-par movie series, than to have to recover from a big box-office failure. The Transformers movies have, somehow, been huge financial successes thus-far, so who knows. We could have a similar situation with TMNT.

Probably cause it takes a while to render realistic looking Turtles more then giant robots?

True. I've learned in my brief stint of 3D animation that organic modeling is a more complex/longer process than hard surface modeling, especially when it's time to render. Then again, it also depends on how fast and how many hours these animation studios are putting in to get the job done efficiently. If we're going with Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes for turtles, we can most likely expect that they're gonna try to go top notch with skin and body modeling/subdivisions, texturing, cloth simulation, UV lighting, rigging the character models, etc. Let's not forget hair simulation for the Master Splinter we have yet to see.

On the other hand, hard surface models like Transformers can prove to be just as difficult as organic ones like TMNT considering what we've seen in the previous TF movies already. I remember hearing in the behind the scenes for TF1 that one of the Autobot models consisted of about 10,000-30,000 individual modeled pieces. Rigging a Transformer with this many parts (making the skeleton) seems like a way longer process than mutant turtle. TMNT will probably have nowhere near that many individual modeled pieces, but perhaps a higher polygon count which slows down the rendering process drastically. Not only do they have to create characters, but CG environments too (if needed).

Motion capture, animation, and rendering is an entirely different process in itself. It all really depends on how hard these studios are working.

Would love to see TMNT detailed to this extent, in another setting of course:

Didn't see this thread when I replied in the other one. To repeat:

"Total vote of no-confidence on the part of the studio. You can tell a lot about how they view their product by when they choose to release it (for example, any horror movie worth anything comes out before Halloween, while any and every horror film released in February is always garbage).

It's smart thinking on their part. TMNT would get MURDERED going against Transformers 4 and the others the article mentions. Plus, since shooting wrapped seemingly so quickly, it would seem that more of it than we thought may be CGI, so it's going to require a lengthy editing and post-production process.

Bottom line, if they really believed they had a blockbuster, they'd release it alongside them, not a month later when they'll have no competition. The movie's bottom line will be better for it, but the move DOES expose that they're still crossing their fingers and hoping for the best with this one."

Also, I completely understand hoping for the best and not wanting to judge things before they're finished. I do. But I'm an analytical sort of person, one who ponders things from all angles, investigates, speculates, tries to predict the end result of this, that and the other... it's just fun for me. I have no vested emotional stake in this movie turning out good or bad. I'm simply of the opinion it will be not so hot, based on everything we know so far. And despite what some of the cockeyed optimists say, we DO have enough facts to get at least a preliminary idea of where the bar for this movie is, and it's low.

That's called "making a preliminary supposition based on facts and evidence;" That's entirely different from "rooting for something to fail". Let me also state, that being overwhelmingly positive about something in spite of all evidence is just as wrong, and irritating, as being overwhelmingly negative about something. Furthermore, this movie may "succeed" at being, as some have speculated, "Goofy dumb fun that's great if you shut your brain off." That's 100% what I'm expecting. That's also still called "A Bad Movie" by any objective, completely unbiased definition. And since we've gotten more than that from TMNT in the past, I was hoping we'd get more than that this time, too.

If it does turn out to be much better than expected, I imagine many of us doubters will be more than happy to recant our positions, while still maintaining that it wasn't perfect and there were indeed things wrong with it. Which isn't "hating"; more like the "I love you but I'm not IN love with you" kinda deal.

August has never been a big blockbuster month. Strange choice.

It can be a month for surprise hits, though.

Month of release has nothing to do with movie quality. Writing, directing, acting, etc. does. Not that I'm expecting a whole lot from Platinum Dunes, but I don't think this is a reason to be a Chicken Little.

True, Guardians of the Galaxy is opening on week before the new TMNT. Marvel Studios put it there cause, They know they cannot compete against Transformers 4. So it was wise for them to put it in the beginning of August, Paramount putting the new TMNT in August was a wise decision because, when you compare Transformers to the TMNT, Transformers is a much bigger property with a huge merchandising push behind it. Putting the new TMNT in August against a new Marvel property will give it a better chance. After all you have two movies with talking anthropomorphic animals in it. So its a win win for both.

Guardians is the biggest gamble that Marvel has taken so far. I think it's great and I can't wait to see those characters, but it's not like the title is a household name. Turtles have been successful for a few decades, I'm betting the Turtles will gross more. Even though I probably want it to bomb so the property can't be touched by Michael Bay ever again.

I am slightly upset it has been pushed back 2 months because I was hoping for a trailer by November/December but I guess it gives them for time to perfect the CGI.

I just hope we get a sneak peak at the turtles by years end.

TMNT now has the 8th of August all to themselves, as Universal blinked first and moved their Dracula reboot to October. Basically, TMNT will more than likely be the number one film that week, unless GOTG is an exceptional breakout hit.

It’s taken from a short article posted on Deadline Hollywood. It doesn't mention the TMNT thing, that was me. However, I find it hard to believe that that didn't factor into Universal's thinking somewhat.

There are always reshoots. And if this is true, it's not a good sign. It means they're putting together the movie and realizing that it sucks, so this would be a last ditch effort to "save" it.

Yep, in World War Z they rewrote and completely changed the 3rd act of the movie after viewing the original cut of the film.

Not a good sign if this is true although the rewrite could lead to a better movie.

The reality of it is a lot of times, you get the film assembled (the assembly cut never plays well, for the record) and see spots where you need improvement or clarification or see something you need to emphasize more, or even remove a once-integral scene that is completely unnecessary or redundant and need to re-connect the dots. Sometimes, you will find something that worked better on page but didn't work so well on film.

That's what the assembly cut is for. It's like the drafting process all over again. It's like when you're writing or sculpting, and you put it together, and go over it, make revisions, or refine the detail more.

Not what I'd like to hear (if true), but better them fix a weak link now than simply push on for the sake of saving some cash.

from the sounds of it, they plan to make 3 tmnt films, so i'm sure they want to put their best foot forward and make a quality movie. if this is true, i don't see anything wrong with it. i'm sure it happens more often than we know in the movie industry.

Probably. My vote is for them to cut their losses and shutter the entire production and everything already filmed. Later on they can give all the footage to the Turtle Doc guys and they can do a vignette about "How to Do a Really Sh*tty Turtle Movie" and show some of it there, complete with new interviews with William Fichtner looking clueless and talking about "it was wacky, I say. Wacky!"

That's not really saying much but yes, it looks like it's going to be even worse than all the other Turtle films. Significantly worse, but with prettier special effects and possibly better looking Turtles.

It's as close as TMNT has ever gotten in mainstream. It's just too bad it was, in fact, only "decent." Even sadder that every movie since then has gotten further and further away from the few glimmers of things in the first film that were solid, until finally now we've arrived at some kind full-on, bastardized Fred Wolf movie.

April in yellow, being a news reporter, Vernon, Irma, Burne (sorta), the whole channel 6 thing on a whole, really. Plus there's a turtle van, we've got at least one turtle going around the streets in a hat and trench coat, original leaked script featured Krang, Bebop & Rocksteady, so obviously someone is looking towards that universe for influence. There's probably more that I'm forgetting.

Too bad the original Mirage inspired movie never happened, that's a what if Laird hadn't sold the turtles, however I think I'm the only one genuinely excited for the movie, it seems such a crazy interpretation of the turtles that it just might work. At the very least it'll be fun, something that hasn't really happened since TMNT II.

I'm sure we'll get a Mirage version eventually after this version is rebooted, but we do have the original movie which while dated works, this new take seems interesting enough. TMNT IV was just so lackluster.

I consider Barron's film to be inspired by Mirage. There are several plot points taken straight from the comics and even bits of dialogue and whole sequences. There aren't too many super hero movies that are based on comic book characters that stick directly to the plot lines laid out by the original books. That movie added only a few elements from the toyline/cartoon to help encourage a wider audience.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if that's still the case. This would make them, after all, mutants and not aliens. And it's unlikely an angle as large as an "alien invasion" was completely scrapped from the script when production was shut down briefly for rewrite.

That's true. In a big budget movie like this, it'd be weirder if there wasn't some manner of reshoots.

As someone a bit in film myself, the only real oddities from a production standpoint are 1) That they actually opened a production office for the film without a finished script and then shut down said office for rewrites for a few months (I don't even know of another time this has ever happened for any film), 2) That it's 7 months from release and there isn't so much as a teaser trailer of any kind.

TigerClaw

Reshoots are a common practice on filming. Typically they look at all the footage they shot in the editing room and then for various reasons, Decide to do some reshoots to add more to the existing footage that were originally shot. Who knows what the reshoots could be, Perhaps its to include more info in the story.
