View Full Version : What's Your Message to Michael Bay and Crew

If you had your opportunity to meet with Michael Bay and crew how would you express yourself based on what you know so far? What would you want them to know while they're making this movie? Would you be calm and collect or rip them a new one? This movie could be as sweet as apple pie or as unappealing as a juicy turd but I'm sure the development of this film has us all on edge.

I'd tell them to stop making a TMNT movie that nobody wants and to hand the reigns over to someone who actually knows what the franchise is about.

I enjoyed your horror remakes and look forward to what Platinum Dunes does with the turtles, and the upcoming Friday The 13th sequel.

Also, Pain and Gain was great.

I'm sorry, but isn't Eastman involved in some capacity, and didn't he say the film will blow us away? He did create these characters so I think his words have some weight to them. Right? Right.

Eastman is just happy the turtles are selling. They can bring on Venus and he'd still applaud it.

What would be the point?

Early on I when the whole alien thing kicked off and a few were saying that we should wait and see I argued it was important for people to have their say so the powers that be knew how we felt and maybe influence them in changing the minds.

Of course Bay didn't give a **** and just said about how we should all chill because he had this amazing script...

Then we read the script and it was it was amazingly bad but still Bay didn't care.

Thankfully it looks like Viacom did heed the public and perhaps rethought things however I feel too many wheels were in motion for them to anything but order some token changes and I believe it was done grudgingly by Platinum Dunes.

It's not like Bay takes criticism very well but it's too late anyway. There's nothing any person can say at this point that will have an affect on anything.

But...

If I had to say something. I'd explain what I like TMNT and why I feel it's proven popular with the public (not always the same thing).

I'd point out that if his company wanted to make a movie about aliens and ancient prophecies then they should have done that - not pass it off as an established franchise.

I'd also say that I believe a day, a movie will come - not necessarily the upcoming TMNT movie that the majority of the public might cotton on that a lot of movies connected to Bay they come out and say "eh it was alright" or "it was good for a couple of hours" and that should make him nervous.

If I'm to believe that history repeats itself then I'm sure someday we'll get another film akin to the 90's film again in some fashion.

I'm sure the 2014 film will be a treat visually but the look of the TMNT could make it or break it for me.

That's usually how opinions are formed...after viewing something for yourself.

I gotta admit though that none of the news is good news, but I don't want to sucker punch someone because of it. I just won't see it...having no disposable movie viewing income also helps with that.

I'm so worried about the decisions you're making with this film. You're making unnecessary changes like a white Shredder etc. But even with all the worries I'm so excited to see a brand new live action Ninja Turtles movie. Thanks for actually making this happen. Praying it'll be better than I thought. Doubting this project, but I just want to see it already.

Having a movie deal is hardly a sinking ship.

And yes I do believe that Viacom is capable of making a bad movie. If every big company only made good movies there's be no such things as flops.

Even going by a pretty short track record with only a cartoon made by Nickleodeon to judge not only are saturday morning cartoons and movies two very different things (specificaly this cartoon and movie seem to be shooting for very different things) but Nickleodeon and Platinum Dunes handling of the property has been very different. From the moment we saw those 2D designs Nick put stuff out there to hype us up and allay any fears. The movie folks haven't done that and you can't help people thinking the reason they haven't is that perhaps our the reservations about this might actualy be close to truth if not right on the money.

The idea that this movie will be entertaining in a turn your brain off kinda way I'd say is fairly likely (although not a certainty) but as a fan I want more than that.

The fact that if this movie is successful (which doesn't necessarily mean it's good) helps the franchise because we get more toys and merchendise only really benefits the fans that have a 'collect-em-all' mentality.

But seriously I'd ask them about some of the ideas and what makes them think TMNT fans would like it? Honestly, I'm curious what angle the writers have with this? Why did they feel like they had to change this and that and have a white Shredder and blah blah and still expect it to be good?

I wouldn't have a single thing to say to Bay. He is one of several producers. I would want to talk to someone who actually put time and effort into the making of this movie, not someone who threw money around and said go. He's a big name attached to this movie, and nothing more.

That said, what I would say to Liebesman, the cast, and the crew at-large would be...ignore the haters, and have fun with this franchise while you can. You're all in a position us TMNT fans wish we were in...ok, maybe not all of us, but I'm sure there's plenty of us that wishes we could have even a small part in the making of a TMNT movie.

So when I watch the movie someone is going to yell out "Why aren't they black" when they see Katara or Sokka? No joke this happen when I went to see the movie, but it was before I walked out. From listening to reviews I didn't miss much, I walked out during the pebble Bendin- whoops I mean "Earth Bending" scene.

Right? Ridiculous.

I have no problem with someone being optimistic on a project, or keeping an open mind.

My only problem is when those same people get so angry, mad, and 'pissy' to other people who happen to have an Opinion that just happens to not share their point of view.

It's a forum to discuss, for good AND bad. If a person thinks "this film sounds like crap", then why do you care? You didn't make the film.

You are more open minded, they are not. End of story.

But sometimes it's like people on this forum take it a little too personally and say "hey, you're saying bad things about it even though it hasn't come out? How dare you!"

Almost like a "You Better Not Say a Bad Word since it's not out yet, otherwise you're an A-Hole" type of party.

By that logic, no one can say anything whatsoever about the film until said film is out. If one wasn't able to look at a picture/news article/whatever and have an opinion aka "This looks bad" or "this looks good", then there'd be no reason to even have topics or forums about the new film coming out.

We could just look up news articles on sites like AintitcoolNews, worstpreviews, cinemablend, and so on.

So in other words, let people just say what they want and stop taking it so personally.

If a piece of news comes out, and someone says it sounds bad, and you disagree with them...just agree/disagree without having a hissy fit or call them names or whatever, and then just move on. And I know cause I'm guilty of the same things.

It's a forum, not real life.

It's funny how everyone with a positive view is pissed because the people with a negative view have their own opinions yet the positive folks are preaching how everyone should be able to have an opinion. I'm so confused. Personally, I would ask why they can't just leave it alone. I'm tired of every movie coming out being based on something I either read or played on a video game system or watched on TV, etc. Come on, do something original and new.

why does Hollywood feel the need to totally reinvent everything? I'm all for a new 21st century look but why do they have to discard or alter the source material. If it's not broke then don't fix it. If not being able to reinvent a franchise stifles your creativity then create a new property where that's not a factor.

Yeah, but at least in the Nick show the foot still look like ninjas and Shredder is Japanese. It's not totally different from any other incarnation of the TMNT. Granted, we haven't seen the 2014 movie yet but the news thus far is a bit discouraging.

The Nick show is a different animal. It's somehow the same old Turtles we know and love but not. It's a perfect mix, to me anyway.

I get the business side of it, Spider-man draws more attention than say Elysium which, as far as I know, is an original idea. I get that, the reason I said it should just be left alone is in some cases it can be handled well, like the Nick series, but Hollywood can botch it too.

It's not about having a negative or positive opinion, it's about not having one versus having one. Believe it or not, there is such a thing as a baseless opinion, e.g. saying a movie is going to suck or ruin a franchise before it even comes out. Like I said, saying you don't want to see it is fine. Vilifying it and the people who made it is not.

I can see that, but when you're passionate, you're passionate. The Turtles mean a lot to me and obviously everyone else here, and some just don't want it messed with, which it seems they have in this film. Hell, it could be the best Turtles ever, but it could also blow the big one. Those with a negative viewpoint are gonna see the bad and stick to it while the more positive are gonna see the good. Simple psychology.

You're right. They need to be strapped into chair, with their eyelids held open, as panel for panel slides of all the comics scroll by for them to read. I do not feel at all sorry for myself, thank you very much., so you don not need to either. I have been a TMNT fan since childhood, and I have yet to hear one thing that makes me care about this movie. The only plus, the fx should be killer.

Movie making is a money driven industry. Not too hard to understand.

I agree. They should just leave things alone. I wish the new cartoon didn't exist. Right? Who's with me?

The reasons often quoted of why Hollywood like to make - or rather believe more money can be made on movies based on established properties are...

a) They have more marquee value

b) They have an existing fanbase that will pay to see it

c) If story has worked in one medium than why not another

Now no one is suggesting they do a panel for panel remake of the Mirage comic or a full on adaption of the Fred Wolf show. Everyone knows that adapting something to a different medium requires certain liberties to be taken.

Messing around with the fundamentals however seems to endanger most if not all of the reasons why companies feel making movies on established properties is profitable.

You don't need all the pieces in place to be able to make out the image of a jigsaw.

I'd say there's enough stuff out there for someone who has followed it all to to form a picture of where the movie is heading so these opinions are not as baseless as you think.

Also the industry knows and thrives on fans jumping to conclusions. That's why they release casting choices and allow the actors to talk about the movie and release plot details and so on to hype us all up and make us want to see it. The fact that we haven't gotten much of that and what little we have has had the opposite is just one of those things.

No, it is, no matter what kind of metaphor you use.

So we have literaly nothing to help us form an opinion?

We don't have a leaked script or photos from the set confirming not only aspects of that script are still present but suggesting certain plot details or show us what the film may look like?

We don't have interviews with some of the actors like Will Arnett telling us how his character of Vernon differs greatly from the one we know and William Fichtner telling us about Eric Sachs character and both saying this differs from the TMNT they know and it's a really 'out there' Michael Bay project.

I like how in this place, people pretend they NEVER pre-judge something. I'm calling BS, every single human being pre-judges entertainment every single day. That's why they watch commercials, that's why they read magazines, that's why they go on blogs and news websites. Some of the very same people knocking others for pre-judging this movie negatively, do the same thing every day in the video game forums and GD with other movies, TV shows, wrestling angles, etc.

So I'm saying at least 50% of the people saying "you can't judge it this early", when they themselves do it every day with something else, are in this case simply being contrary.

Forming entire opinions before we see something, shouting those opinions to the high heavens, and then changing our opinions once we see the finished product, and then declaring ultimately "I always KNEW it was gonna kick ass/suck balls!" is not only a right, it is in fact THE ENTIRE REASON THE INTERNET EXISTS.

So I would say to Bay and Co., "I wish Transformers only had one movie, but I'm intrigued about your Friday the 13th plans, if any."
