View Full Version : I'm new here...question about new movie?

Is the new movie going to be based on the comics or is it going to be based on the OT? I notice that Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady are no longer part of the script, but they have kept Vernon and a female version of Burne, which I thought were 80s show characters?

Vernon, Burne, a turtle van, & April in yellow as a newscaster seem to suggest if it's got one main influence, it's the OT. But based on other things coming out, it also seems to be quite a departure. & just because we've had no word on those other mutants yet doesn't mean they won't show up at some point, however unlikely it may be.

Thanks. I was just wondering because I like the OT and I tire of the powers that be hating on it and ignoring its existence. Now that the rights have been sold, I hope the new owners are more respectful to the OT and its fans.

You're out of your mind. Are you freakin' serious with that nonsense? They continously re-issue the OT on DVD, every store is full of OT based shirts, hats, TWO different toylines, it's the only thing that the mass market has EVER cared about short of the new series! If the 'powers that be' were 'hating on it' we wouldn't have the same turtle crap peddled to us after thirty years. Jesus. OT fans outside of this board are just a bunch of casuals who refuse to accept any other version of the TMNT.

Wow. Way to welcome a new member! (I think I just had a deja vu moment...) If you don't like the OT, that's your right, but don't insult a new member who asked a legitimate question. That's just rude. And condescending, to boot.
So far, bo staff, we've seen several indications that the new movie WILL have a strong OT influence (as Mr. Popular there mentioned) but also apparently still has some of the old leaked script left in it, too. time will tell what we end up with, but I for one am still (cautiously) optimistic. Especially with April as a reporter again, Vernon, and the VAN!!! (I always loved that thing, never mind how "un-ninja" it was. It was just that cool.)

I don't think that's what he was saying. I'm pretty sure Powder DOES like the OT. It's pretty obvious. What he was saying was that the OT actually gets a ton more love and attention than some people think and that it's silly to suggest otherwise. I think.
He just said it a little "Oscar The Grouch"-ey.

Pretty sure saying someone's out of their mind and saying "Are you freakin' serious with that nonsense?" or "OT fans outside of this board are just a bunch of casuals who refuse to accept any other version of the TMNT." counts as an insult. Especially to a new poster. That really IS condescending and comes off kind of arrogant, IMHO. Maybe not to YOU, but certainly most people would see it that way. And "If the 'powers that be' were 'hating on it' we wouldn't have the same turtle crap peddled to us after thirty years." sounds like a bit of serious vitriol being spilled there. Me, I call it what it is- nostalgia commercialism at its best. But hey, what do I know? I'm not as rabid as some fans I've seen.
And you're doing it again with that last comment, Powder- I think I understand you VERY well. Maybe better than you realize.....

It's not an insult to anyone here to say something about outsiders. & if you say something ridiculous, I'm going to call it like I see it. Can't say everyone reads it the same as you considering Leo656 & Jester back my points. I'm bitter at the license holders & the non-fans they cater to, sure, but that has nothing to do with the OP of this thread.

Really?! You DON'T say! (That's sarcasm, BTW.) Sorry, but I HAVE to call people on it when they are habitually rude to newcomers as if they are somehow "inferior" fans, or that people outside of this forum are not "true" fans. And I've seen you do this OVER and OVER again. Fans do not ALL congregate in the same place, nor does everyone like the TMNT in the same way or the same versions, or even KNOW of newer versions (most fans from back in the 80's have grown up and moved on to other interests that are less "kiddie-ish", and probably have more important things on their minds as well, I'm sure. That doesn't mean they are not real fans just because they moved away from it- they just developed other tastes.
I happen to know several people who didn't even know there WAS an OT, comics, or anything before the 2K3 series, because they are too young to remember them, and in spite of your claims, it doesn't get the same exposure now as it did almost 30 years ago. I've found very little outside of places like Amazon that even HAS any OT stuff. A few shirts in Hot Topic or DVDs in the 5$ bin at Wal-Mart, perhaps, but that's about it. And for heaven's sake there are kids out there now who don't even know who Pac-Man is!!! So your sneering at "outsiders" as non-fans is really just disgustingly elitist. I can point you to quite a few folks on DeviantArt or Fan-Fiction's sites who are just as big fans as anyone here (and several of them ARE here).

Yeah, Leo, you're right. I just have a thing for defending the "little guy" especially when it comes to newcomers to a site. It stems from my Moderator days over on Marvel- I get REALLY tired of seeing the new guys get treated like dirt by veteran posters. They have as much right to be here as anyone. And to see someone get treated to a welcome like that one just pushes my "Moderator mode" button. And now you guys know why I gave up that position over there..... Too many headaches.
Edit: Powder, I'm not the only one you've done this to. Since joining, I've seen you make snide comments basically bashing at least two other new posters. So don't pretend you're innocent. And I've read on several threads that this seems to be a habit with you. I don't put ANYONE on my ignore list, no matter how much I dislike their attitude, because OCCASIONALLY they might actually have something worth paying attention to. Even you. So consider yourself lucky that I'm willing to listen to people even when I don't like how they behave.

It's also a double standard, as it's a mathematical probability that you're a "casual" to another franchise, and are in some way being catered to more than the loyal fanbase.
A fanbase isn't an exclusive club, where only the most worthy, the most loyal (and, as a result, the most naive) may enter. TMNT is a broad franchise, that has stretched multiple generations. It has a variety of fans, who've entered the series from different ages and through varying mediums. Some fans are loyal to the original comics; others, the Fred Wolf series. The same will soon be said about the Nick series and, though it may pain some of us to hear this, the Platinum Dunes film. Me, personally, I entered the series with the OT, but my favorite incarnation is the first film. Discovering new fans -- yes, even "casuals" -- is a sign of a healthy, thriving fanbase. Otherwise, it wouldn't grow, and would eventually lie stagnant, dissipating, most likely the franchise along with it.

Well, everyone has to start off SOMEWHERE..... That's how I look at it. Even "casual" fans have their place in the franchise. It's not as if EVERY "casual" fan is so un-informed of the basics. Most at least remember their weapons and colors, if not their names. (And honestly, how many people would remember a bunch of dead Renaissance artists' names from a cartoon from 30 years ago, anyway? The visuals are far more easily remembered.) If nothing else, many now have kids who are now themselves fans of the TMNT, and bring their parents back into the fan-base. So it's win-win!

I didn't think of Krang as an "alien invader" because he's from another dimension and not another planet of our dimension. Not arguing with you, just pointing out that I've never seen Krang that way before. But yes, I guess he counts as an alien, ans he is definitely an "invader."

A lot of the recent conversation in here hearkens back to a point I made in another thread about the difference between being a "fan" of something and simply "having a fond appreciation for it based on past love". I feel, without trying to be condescending, that a "fan" of something does at least a little peripheral research on the thing they claim to love.
I watched BraveStarr as a kid. I liked it. Haven't seen it in years, can't tell you one damn thing about it other than they cancelled He-Man for it; I've forgotten everything else. So even though it was something I liked as a kid, I wouldn't call myself a "fan" of it. If I get the DVDs, refresh my memory of it, and decide I still enjoy it, then I'd feel more comfortable calling myself a "fan" of it. See also: Go-Bots, C.O.P.S., SilverHawks, Centurions, and a bunch of other stuff I watched every day but somehow don't remember or care about as fondly as things like Ghostbusters, He-Man and TMNT.
I kind of don't think "I loved something when I was a kid" and "I'm a huge fan of something" are *exactly* the same thing, so while I don't sweat it, I kind of get how some people are annoyed by "casuals", at least ones who act like they know more than they actually do.

The villains were actually pretty accurate (IMO) The only 80's Turtle who was very close to his actual self was Raphael. The rest especially Leonardo were too silly. Bebop and Rocksteady working for Shredder (Chr'ell) and ultimately screwing him over made me laugh since that was pretty much what they did in the OT. Im sadden we didn't get to see Shredder and Krang fight like a married couple more in the movie.

I mentioned that a while ago. I think the studio has fairly low expectations and isn't expecting it to get good buzz, so they're keeping it quiet for as long as they can. They're hoping that when it comes out everyone is pleasantly surprised; they don't want to have a 6-month lead-in of trailers with people online saying "OMG that wuz s0 corny yo!" They don't want a "Green Lantern" situation where the studio actually believes they have a strong movie people will love, then people start sh*tting on it as soon as they see a trailer, followed by months of "This movie is going to suck (It didn't suck, but that's a whole other debate)." They want us to know as little as possible for as long as possible.
I really can't blame 'em. People are nitpicky about their TMNT. And every single announcement OTHER than "They're making a movie" has been met with massive nerd rage, so I think they're right to do it this way.

Andrew: Well it's more about how TF made it seem like the wackiest stuff was ALL the time (instead of just most of the time). They *could* have chosen to show some of the more grounded stuff, but they chose to paint a little bit broader (i.e., "We save April once a day!" or whatever it was, when she wasn't even in like a good chunk of the episodes). I got it, the jokes were funny, and I'm no OT apologist, but it wasn't *always* like that.
It's like those Scott Steiner Botch videos on YouTube. Yes, all that stuff happened, and yes, he's hilarious for all the wrong reasons, but he was ALSO one of the best workers in the world at various points of his career. It's just not as fun to show that.
So it's not that they were way off with the way TF portrayed the OT characters, it was that there was some selective omission going on as far as how to represent them.
The lack of any word could also be because the movie doesn't come out for another year. The lack of anything at SDCC is not unusual, as Paramount very often take a leave of absence from that event. There are plenty of "big" films scheduled for next summer that no one knows anything about yet. It is far too soon for a trailer or even an official still.
Leo656
09-03-2013, 11:59 AM
Too soon for a trailer, maybe, stills, no. Movies like Man of Steel that are expected to make money are hyped in any way possible as early as possible.
TMNT will never get close to being that big a movie, BUT it still stands to reason that if the studio thought they had a surefire winner they'd be running around yelling "Hey! Look at us!" every chance they got.
Example: Whoopi Goldberg is the biggest star not named "Kevin Nash" to ever be involved with a TMNT project, and she's apparently in the movie. It's not big news, nobody's really talking about it besides a few of us, it's like such a non-event. You say to someone, "Did you hear Whoopi Goldberg is in the new Turtles movie?" and most of them will say, "No. Wait, they're making a new Turtles movie?" Even in a comedic bit-part, that's the kind of thing studios like to scream at people about to get them interested.
The fact they haven't said anything at all about the movie besides, "They're not aliens, trust us!" doesn't mean for sure it's bad, but it 100% means they don't want to tip their hand too soon.

I agree, and I think the biggest issue I'm seeing with this film right now is that the studio seemingly knows that they currently have no audience. OT and casual fans are angry about the movie because of Megan Fox, the lack of a yellow jumpsuit, the odd looking Foot Clan, Eric Sachs, and many of them because they're expecting it to get "Transformered". Mirage fans are angry about the movie because they take Turtles far more seriously, and don't want to see the essentials of the franchise gutted. Fans of the Nick series are upset because they're enjoying a current iteration of TMNT that's incredibly successful, yet the studio seems to be all but ignoring it's existence in favor of doing an amped-up throwback to the Fred Wolf series. They're just in a lose-lose situation.
Basically, the only audience this film has doesn't exist yet. It's going to be comprised of people who had to be won over when they saw more of the product, and everyday moviegoers who don't follow movie production and only care once they can actually go see the thing. There really isn't a large enough group vocally supporting this movie for Paramount to feel safe revealing anything yet.

Of course not. Even a completely faithful Fred Wolf: The Movie wouldn't make it a blockbuster... it's got to stand on its own two feet for a whole new generation and demographic unfamiliar with any TMNT.

Well I'unno about all *that*. Some kids are a bit more savvy than we think they are and can familiarize themselves with TMNT if they decide they care enough. My niece and I never discussed TMNT, she found it on her own back in like 2006, then went online and started watching the OT. She already knew a lot about TMNT on her own before I introduced her to the movies and other stuff.
Not every kid is going to "work backwards" in discovering earlier incarnations of a new fandom, but some will. I know I always did. Just depends how curious they are.

Right, but if it were a completely faithful adaptation of Fred Wolf, it would already have an audience. All of those OT fans would be hyping the movie all over the internet, and Paramount could easily see them as guaranteed ticket sales. Movies like Lord of the Rings, Watchmen, Harry Potter, they all had a built-in audience before a single trailer hit. Yeah, there were some pessimistic fans inevitably complaining about those movies too, but it wasn't just overwhelmingly negative everywhere you went like it is with this TMNT movie.
Right now, all Paramount has are people bitching about their movie, right down to writers for mainstream publications like Entertainment Weekly. They maybe, MAYBE see a positive comment here or there, but if they've got their finger even remotely on the pulse, all they're really getting are negative vibes. This isn't just a simple case of waiting to find an audience. They're dealing with a franchise where there should already be some sense of excitement in the air, and they don't have it.

True, but that's really my entire point. They have groups of TMNT fans that they could market to in order to create buzz that will spread, but they can't because all of those groups vocally hate their movie before ever seeing a trailer.
Look at something like Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel. It's a no-brainer that far more people know and love TMNT than Guardians, and yet, there's so much more mainstream buzz about that film than there is Turtles. GOTG has a much smaller built-in audience, but Marvel has marketed to them and created a small positive buzz that turns into a positive word of mouth. Turtles should be able to have that, given the fact that TMNT has so many groupings of fans. This whole thing just seems mishandled.

How can u have a popular franchise like the Ninja Turtles , after 6 f*cken years back on the screen, a popular show and still not have hype behind it??
they deserve this with all the crap weve had to deal with/accept when it comes to this particular movie..

I agree 1000%

The thing is, the movie isn't really for "us" at all... it never has been. It's weird to get bent out of shape about it.

Whoopie Goldberg hasn't been relevant since the 90's.
William Fichtner is probably the biggest star at the moment as his own stardom is increasing with each picture he makes. Second biggest is, of course, Fox. who brought a cloud of notoriety around the movie with her being cast.
Aside from those points, since the movie was pusehd back to August next year I don't expect to see a teaser until early next year and a trailer around April 2014.

But I think most guys are gonna be lining up to see Megan Fox instead.

That didn't save "Jennifer's Body." She isn't a draw.
(but no, neither is Whoopi... and neither is anybody currently announced for the movie)
None of the actors who are in the film are the draw. For these types of films actors are very rarely the draw. What was the main draw for the first Transformers film? May sound cynical, but the one and only draw is the brand name, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That, and the visuals and action.

Doesn't Will Arnett have a fanbase? I mean that's the only reason they casted him as Vernon.

No, no, Whoopi Goldberg is not relevant and hasn't been for a long time. But she IS the biggest and most well-known "mainstream celebrity" ever attached to a TMNT movie. Everyone in America at least has a vague idea who she is. Even a small role in something like TMNT should at least be something people talk about a little bit. And yet, nobody really is... they're not saying anything about the movie at all, and that's just slightly puzzling.

I didn't think of Krang as an "alien invader" because he's from another dimension and not another planet of our dimension. Not arguing with you, just pointing out that I've never seen Krang that way before. But yes, I guess he counts as an alien, ans he is definitely an "invader."

I just hope it's not those silly extraterrestrials in "Artless" :)

Krang is pretty much an inter dimensional alien.

Mmm, I tend to think David Warner is a bit higher esteemed than Whoopi. Even then.

I don't know. 50/50? I'm not necessarily going by "esteem", just more of "Hey, I know who that is" factor. I think Whoopi's honestly a little bit ahead on that one. You know how many people watched Hollywood Squares?

Whoopi is a talented person and a pretty good, oscar winning actress. Also, Guinan, her character from Star Trek: The Next Generation, is one of my favorite characters from that show. Unfortunately, she is remembered for all the crappy comedies she made in the 90s, hosting The View, and Hollywood Squares.
