View Full Version : Am I the only one who thinks these were two of the worst episodes of the OT?

I love the OT, but season 3 had some duds. I'm thinking of two in particular: "New York's Shiniest," and "The Case of the Hot Kimono."
First, New York's Shiniest; this was some corny, cliched sci-fi cop type plot. One thing about it that I found especially weird was the carousel scene. Two of the turtles are being pursued by a robot, so their choice of defense is...to jump on a carousel and start riding it...the robot jumps on and lands on its face and doesn't even attempt to get up...once the carousel has completed a full circle, the turtles jump off and the robot that was chasing them a moment ago has disappeared...Yep! If someone is ever chasing me, all I have to do is lure them onto a carousel and they'll disappear! Then there's the Case of the Hot Kimono: I just think an entire episode dedicated to recovering stolen laundry is epic lamesauce.

New York's Shiniest is from Season 2, not season 3. My bad.

No. The worst episode of the whole show was, "The Gangs All here" where Mikey turns human after eating some anti-mutagen in cookies.

And the kimono episode was a funny, silly episode. Master Splinter having a map on the inside of it made sense.

Not gonna lie... kinda dug the kimono episode. For some reason, it was always memorable to me. I think because it got me thinking, "OK, if these guys are doing a story about Splinter's kimono, they'll do an episode about absolutely anything," and that unpredictability was a big part of the show's appeal for me.

There are more than 2 bad episodes from the OT. I'm just too tired to list them. The ones with the human gangster/mobs were quite bad to me IMO.

Nah, I got the reference, I just thought it wasn't a good fit for TMNT and they made him too annoying. Mxyzptlk was clever and devious. Ogg or Oog or whatever was just annoying and petulant. Mere acts of childish destruction are FAR beneath Mr. Mxyzptlk.

And it's Mxyzptlk. MISTER Mxyzptlk, to you. The guy ain't struttin' around wearin' a purple derby hat and chomping a giant cigar for you to be forgettin' the "Mr.", bub.

 That episode did a GREAT job of adapting the very first appearance of (as he was then-known) Mxyztplk. Fun fact: The typing error that changed "Mxyztplk" into "Mxyzptlk" was one of the very first changes/mistakes that led to the "Earth 1/Earth 2" schism. They obviously didn't want to admit making a mistake, and by then the art style of the comics had changed (along with some of Superman's powers and backstory), so they were like "Yeah, it was a parallel universe." So basically, the Multiverse exists, in small part, simply because a writer got a Superman villain's name wrong for an entire issue and the editors didn't want to tell little kids who caught it that they'd screwed up. I love that.

When I was a kid, I had a Superman record that pronounced it "Mix-Pit-Ulk", so I grew up thinking that was how you said it. I don't think anyone really knew. I first heard the "Mix-Yez-Pittle-Ick" (or "Mix-Yez-Pit-Lick", depending on who's saying it) pronunciation in Wizard magazine in like 1992. Seems close enough. And was I the only one who pretty much always though Gottfried was the perfect voice for the guy?

He was clearly, clearly drunk during his appearances on "The Adventures Of Superboy", though. Poor Mxy; existing in five dimensions must be tough. Although the first season of that show was pretty rough, maybe he had to be drunk to get through it.

By far the most accurate live-action Mr. Mxyzptlk was definitely the aforementioned "drunk off his ass" Michael J. Pollard version from Superboy.

Smallville's was the worst. Lois & Clark's was okay, but kind of bland. Like a lot of the celebrity guest-star villains. I loved Bruce Campbell's episode, though. He gets to be in everything, eventually.

Case of the Hot Kimono was cool for the fact that it was one of the only syndicated episodes to have a villain other than Shredder and a memorable one at that. Don Turtelli rocks!! I didn't care for Mr. Ogg and The Starchild and a lot of the European ones as well.

LMAO I was just going to say something about that! I never knew who Howie Mandel was when I watched Lois and Clark first run as a kid. It wasn't until years later when Deal or No Deal got popular that I was like, "Hey- It's the guy who played Mxyzptlk!!!" What??!! How can you say The Gang's All Here and Green With Jealousy were in with the worst episodes? Those are two of my faves, for the humor and the sheer weirdness of them being in those situations. The Gang's All Here basically was a "what if" episode for Mikey to see what it might be like to be like everyone else, sort of a sideways wish-granting a la "It's A Wonderful Life", but without the angel involvement or it being a dream. He really DID get to live his dream for a short time, only to find out it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I like that- it was a great episode to play on an aspect of his personality that is seldom shown.

Green With Jealousy gave us one of the funniest and most awkward situations they ever got into- and the idea of Shredder using love to try to distract his enemies is very ironic. It was one of the most clever schemes he ever came up with, and it ALMOST worked! Even Rocksteady eating the leftover pizza and falling for April played on so many of the show's tropes that it was one of the most tongue-in-cheek episodes ever. And then there was the turtles fighting over- Irma. Of all the people for them to get hung up on, having it be HER was just priceless! And her reaction to finding out the ID's of her admirers was icing on the cake.

If I had to pick worst episodes, Nightmare in the Lair would be at the top of my list. The cheesy Freddy rip-off was so unfrightening that I couldn't even see why they were worried about him at all. The Irish Jig Is Up episode and April Gets In Dutch were FAR worse than TGAH and GWJ, as well. Come to think of it, So was the Orient Express one. Those episodes got so ridiculous that they far out-did TGAH and GWJ as far as being bad episodes.

The Gang's All Here was bad because Mikey losing his skills after he turned human was stupid. How does one lose their martial arts skills like that? Or "turtle powers" as Splinter put it? What "turtle powers"?

MsMarvelDuckie

I think that was just bad editing of the dialog. I always took it to mean that he lost his ABILITIES as a mutant- strength(as a human, he was rather weak), agility (he became a bit clumsy), and toughness (Rocksteady roughed him up quite a bit). The episode itself was pretty good, aside from that slight gaffe.

The Case of the Hot Kimono is actually meant to be a parody of an Agatha Christie novel. Even April's Aunt, Aunt Aggy was supposed to be a parody off Miss. Marpel and the name of course was a nod to Agatha Christy. This same plot was also featured in a much more short lived series called the Adventures of T-Rex.

The Gang's All Here isn't a bad episode either. The thing is that the anti-mutagen was supposed to revert the turtles to "weak" humans, without the ninja training and muscle they've gained from years of martial arts training and beating Shredder and his goons so many times.

MsMarvelDuckie
09-06-2013, 05:40 PM
The only problem I ever had with that episode was that since they were never human to begin with, the anti-mutagen wouldn't "revert" them BACK to humans, it would just complete the change that the original mutagen started by turning them half-human in the first place!

The mutagen itself was certainly stable enough- although the Red-Sky seasons hint that perhaps it had unforeseen side-effects- but the anti-mutagen certainly wasn't. It had different effects every time it was used. How it could turn Mikey human in one episode, and turn the other three into giant floating "balloons" in another is strange and cause for speculation of why it had such diverse effects. After all, originally, the humanizing effect was INTENDED, while the spray Shredder used on the other three was SUPPOSED to turn them back into ordinary turtles. It failed miserably in that regard. I think it might have been used in another episode as well, but I can't recall off the top of my head. However, I DO remember that Donatello created something similar from the last bit of the original ooze, and that was what was used to return Splinter to normal in "Splinter No More". So apparently, that was the intended effect of anti-mutagen all along. The balloon thing just baffles me.

They may not have all lived together. Shredder stayed in Japan until he followed Yoshi to America, but his brother may have lived in the U.S. after a young age where he became a police officer.

It's more likely he was just ashamed of his family's disgrace. They WERE Japanese after all- and family honor is very important over there. From what we know of Shredder's history, he had no ties to America before hunting down Yoshi. He seems to have spent all his time running the Foot (into the ground). Mom apparently moved to the US to retire, but Kazuo seems to have stayed in Tokyo- at least that's what it looks like. Maybe he was trying to undo the damage his brother's leadership of the Foot did. From the way they talked in that episode ("My Brother the Bad Guy"), they must have had a strained relationship for most of their lives.

Maybe their father was an honest man and that's how Shredder's brother turned out good.

And judging from the Legend of Koji episode, Shredder seems to come from a long line of non-honorable individuals.

"Raphael Knocks 'Em Dead" is very bad, mostly because the jokes in it are the worst damn things ever, but also because I dislike the idea of portraying Raphael as a merry prankster rather than a sarcastic (lovable) jerk.

I like Barney Stockman, though, but of course he's as lame a joke as the rest of the episode.

"Shredder's Mom" is hilarious: stupid, but funny. Krang is the only "wife" in the world that gets along with his mother-in-law, and there are some wonderfully dumb jokes (don't ask me the difference between stupid-funny and stupid-annoying, 'cause you know it when you see it).

The only thing I didn't like was the inaccurate Japanese naming, and the bit with Splinter and the abacus. It's a wonder FW Splinter became my childhood hero which such a stupid anti-technology attitude. :P

Then again... :P we've seen in the news how there are some relatives that distance themselves from their infamous crime families and hide the shame associated with it, and lead law-abiding lives.

One example. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Francis_Capone)

I'm surprised nobody listed some of the really bad episodes:

- Donatello's Badd Time. The episode with the 3 hillbillies, Badilla Bad and her two boys who steal the Turtle Van from Donatello.

- Michaelangelo Toys Around. This one is just boring more than anything else

- The Gangs All Here. Human Mikey is terrible, episode is terrible

- The Turtle Terminator. Robot version of Irma, Raph's alternate voice, the animation is awful.

I still disagree about The Gang's All Here. The only bad thing about that episode was how his clothes kept disappearing when he'd change back- but I can forgive that for the fun take on what they'd be like as humans! And April trying to fit into a gang- priceless!

When i come to think about it, i really detest the episode were mondo gecko is introduced. The fact that michelangelo was beaten by a child is outrageous!

Was Mondo Gecko younger, or what? Thought they were both teenagers.

Michelangelo Toys Around was indeed bad. Plus, it was annoying and embarrassing how the Turtles almost got beat by a stupid toy maker.

Donatello's Badd Time was boring and uninspired. Also, did that episode even have any action? I don't recall.

The Turtle Terminator was bad for the reasons you've mentioned, but it was still the best of the lot.

I didn't like the first Hokum episode either. The Turtles traveling to a fairy tale dimension felt like something out of a storybook or little kids show like Arthur.

I just accept it because the episode in the future with Hokum was good.

Just rewatched Turtle Terminator. Aside from 2 of the 4 Turtles being re-voiced, it also has some really crappy animation (by the FW standards) with whole sequences made up of quick cuts to static images.

And any episode involving Zach is a bad one. End of story.

That kid definitely would'a gotten his ass kicked a ton walking around dressed like that and calling himself the "Fifth Turtle". Especially once he got to high school! (Although I read on Wikipedia that Zach and Caitlyn were about 14, so that's even worse, if true)

I swear, Zach has untapped villain potential, especially since he mostly disappeared after a while and wasn't really seen or mentioned again. I would so buy it if Zach returned as a villain years later after he was "abandoned" by the Turtles after so many years being devoted to them. Add Bonus Points if he tried to hook up with Caitlyn, only to be rejected for a studlier, non-Ninja Turtle-obsessing football player, as high school chicks often do when their "best friend" types try and score with them. Nerdy kid + crushed devotion + unrequited love = Mucho Super-Villain! And he'd know ALL their secrets, and even their lair! Zach is a huge hole in the story, and I think I just plugged it.

Nick and IDW, feel free to make the check out to "Cash". :P

Thanks. My consultant's fee is substantial. 8)

Just don't let Frank Miller near it. He'd have Caitlyn turning tricks for smack and selling out the Turtles for her next fix, like Karen Page in Daredevil.

Others have mentioned this episode, and if not the absolute worst, it was a definite stinker.

I didn't like Zach either, though I did like how he was able to track the Turtles to their lair so easily when all the serious villains couldn't.

I dunno, I've grown to like that Raphael episode. Maybebe because I like stand up comedians and Pinky McFingers as a villain. This wasn't his best appearance but I still liked it. it was also one of the few episodes to not feature a scientist as the main antagonist, but rather a sidekick of Pinky's.

Zach was in, "Shredderville," and "Night of the Rogues," so no, not all Zach eps are bad.

In fact most of Zach's episodes tend to be good, like the Wingnut/Screwloose episode or, "Bebop and Rocksteady conquer the universe" with their fear gun.

Unless you meant episodes primarily about Zach, not ones he just happened to guest star in.

Eh, where were all you guys when I brought this up a few posts ago? :P

Once again, tho' Barney Stockman is a one-note joke, the idea of him is twisted and interesting in a way, and also funny. I find it hilarious that Baxter's own brother apparently hates his guts, and is also completely out of his gourd.

I also have to say, though, that "Raphael Knocks 'Em Dead" still makes me cringe. The jokes are just so bad, and, y'know, I prefer Fred Wolf Raphael as a sarcastic jackass, and not the merry prankster that some later episodes tried to paint him as.

Eh...I'm not sure. I'm as certain as you can be with [citation needed] that the jokes told by the characters in the episode were supposed to be funny-bad, but "supposed to be bad" isn't a free pass. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.

I think they probably were though, because some of the humor in this show is genuinely funny, especially Raph's sarcasm or Shredder/Krang's banter. And in the same episode, Barney getting upset about mixing up with his brother made me laugh.

Even the jokes from those other two comedian guys who were kidnapped with Raphael had horrid jokes too. So I guess it was intentionally supposed to be bad...

Er, that's not what I said.

Of course the OT is funny when it works; I love it when it does. But I'm saying that "it was supposed to be bad" is often the rallying cry of someone whose work doesn't succeed. Even if it was "supposed to be bad", if it turns out to be annoying and grating, the thing has failed.
