So i saw on another thread a list of upcoming toys for 2014, and one of them listed was "Kirby Bat".

This would mean the bat in the season two sneak peak is kirby and not wingnut

This is interesting because the 4Kid series had a character called Kirby, Which was dedicated to Jack Kirby the artist. I wonder if there is some sort of connection.

I'm willing to bet, Kirby is the one who will push April out of the way as that Canister of Mutagen falls towards her and then hes hit by it, then causing his mutation as a Bat, Based on the previews we seen from SDCC 2013.

Maybe in the Season 2 preview we saw at Comic-con where April was about to get swarmed by cans of Mutagen, Kirby throws himself there to protect April thus turning into a Mutant himself?

I wonder if he's like Man-Bat from Batman?

Kirby was experimenting with mutagen and wanted to see if he could become an intelligent mutant like the turtles. He tries it with a bat. And at first, Kirby can talk, and can function like a human, But soon becomes mindless. He would go through "shifts", One moment he's a intelligent mutant, and the next, a mindless monster.

What do you think?

You mean something similar to what Falco was doing?

I doubt he'd want to become a mutant willingly. After all, he has April to take care of. My guess is that he somehow accidently comes in contact with the mutagen.

awww.....I'm tired of April going emo because of her dad....

gosh can't the man just stay home and drink some hot cocoa!! XD
anyway....I hope he gets cured quickly if he is gonna mutate.

also those mutagen cans were falling so slow....April could totally just dodge them herself! she's looking straight at it!! I mean come on she's trained with Splinter.......(though I'm pretty sure that's not the reason Kirby was mutated)

they need to stop mutating everyone, should just leave him as he is.

Maybe Shredder kidnaps him and forces him to make the robot foot soldiers.
now that Baxter is no longer with Shredder, they need a scientist guy..

thats exactly what i thought. i think we all know april is going to be saved...or just step out of the way, but thats too easy....so we can assume whoever saves he will get mutated. and unless theyre going to re mutate a turtle, mutate casey, have baxter save her, my bet is on kirby pushing her out of the way.

i really hope its only temporary, cause i dont want all but a few humans mutated, or depressed april again, but i feel like itll be bat kirby for awhile

Shredder is more likely to implement Kraang droids as foot soldiers. April's dad is a psychologist not an engineer.

As for Kirby being a bat...it is possible Kirby finds a piece of the power cell or some Kraang thing and then later on shares the same fate of the Jack Kirby character in the mirage/2k3 series.

I think it works out. Kirby isn't a character that really works since he would hinder April's independence. He's the kind of character that works best when he's not around. Season one had him kidnapped for the season... so season 2 can have him mutate and fly off or whatever as an excuse to nnot have him around.

And that would drive Donnie harder to create a cure for the Mutagen. Because if he could somehow return the Pulverizer to being human, what is to stop him from returning other people to normal like Rockwell and Splinter.

Exactly.

Bebop/Rocksteady's human forms were in the toys, specifically the mutating figures Playmates put out. They were also shown in Turtles Forever as a throwaway gag.

They appeared in two further episodes as humans after their mutation in, "Shredderville," and "Plan 6 from Outer Space."

Lastly, IDW even kept their iconic human designs and that's a new continuity that's going on now.

If they are so "iconic" then how could that mistake even be made.

Also, they kept Bebop's look because it was who he was. Kinda like how Dogpound still rocks Bradford's stache.

So.....3 episodes and an obvious gimmick toy (which was, oh so ironically WHITEWASHED!!!) = iconic....I think you're stretching.

They appeared once in toy line as opposed to the countless mutant forms varieties.

Turtles Forever that wasn't even them, if a casual person watches it they won't even know that's a reference to bebop/rocksteady. If they are iconic, they would've shown them mutated from human or into mutants, so people would get that that's them.

Cartoon episodes are so few as opposed to the mutant form.

IDW are keeping it slow as that's what comic book does. It draws money for them. Much later they'll be mutants permanently for the longest time as that's what people really wanna see.

Well of course, they made mutating figures to show their human forms so they didn't need to do it more than once. They didn't even make a human Baxter toy, so that says a lot.

Yeah, but my point is when they brought Bebop/Rocksteady back their human designs were very similar to the OT only with slight updates. Back in 2011 before we even knew IDW would use those two, people instantly recognized Bebop's design in the previews posted online.

you assume too much with too little evidence. yes they started out just making up the purple dragons, but after that they became villains, not just background characters. they saved the turtles, mugged april, caught baxter and work for shredder. they are no more background characters than dogpound or fishface.

and no their designs arent generic. they are purple dragons. they arent neccesarily going to have mohawks or wear army clothes or have any features that you seem to think make characters "distinct". but they do have a believable purple dragon uniform, with the ICONIC purple dragon tattoo. Indeed, that's why whenever we have a character with a distinct design its because they wind up being important. Bradford and Xever's designs were more unique.

If Bebop or Rocksteady ever appear on this show, I expect to see two thugs show up who look similar to what they did in the past. A black guy with a purple mohawk and shades, and a white guy with army pants.

the purple dragons do have a distinct design though. i dont think you know what "generic" means. also dont think you know what a "background character is". on top of that, just as the mohawk and army pants are defining features to bebop/rocksteady, the dragon tattoo/thug look is just as iconic to the purple dragons. the pd's are a group of people, this is just the first time more than one of them has a name.

what was bebop and rocksteadys purpose? to fight the turtles. Huns purpose? fight the turtles. Fishface and dogpound? Fight. the. turtles.

the pds are another type of villain to the turtles. just because they dont have certain distinct qualities that make them fully developed within the first season doesnt just place them in the category of "background". background characters, are the purple dragons in 2k3, the ones that had no name, voice, maybe only showed up in one scene. they were background characters. it could be anything. but based on how this series has gone, the most probable scenario is that kirby gets mutated.

If Kirby is the one turning into a mutant Bat. Whats to stop Michelangelo from naming him... Wingnut? I could totally see Mikey naming him that since he is the one naming all the characters.

Basic human decency? Empathy? They're both rarer than they should be, in this show, but I would hope the writers realize that calling April's dad a derogatory, ableist nickname after he's just gone through a traumatic experience is Not Cool At All.

That storyline didn't begin with the 2k3 series.

It was the original Donatello micro-series comic from the Mirage comics: http://www.comicvine.com/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-color-classics-donate/4000-392394/ (April's father using Kirby's crystal to draw her into existence is also part of the mirage series)

and it was also adapted into a picture book to go along with the 1987 tv series.

It's a classic TMNT story dating back to the original comics, not a one-off created for the 2003 cartoon.

I think it works out. Kirby isn't a character that really works since he would hinder April's independence. He's the kind of character that works best when he's not around. Season one had him kidnapped for the season... so season 2 can have him mutate and fly off or whatever as an excuse to nnot have him around.

Yes to getting rid of Kirby. He strikes me as being a bit of a prop character. I can't get interested in him.

I think you see a lot more development from April when he's removed out of her life. For example, the initial kidnap and hostage situation that's gone through series one, it's all built character into her, made her more independent and stronger than she would've been if she and he were living together. And she probably wouldn't have been as involved with the turtles if the series took that route, because she'd have more of a life outside the sewers.

A real shame that April's father gets mutated. I hope they don't spend this entire season trying to find some way to turn him back to normal.

Its starting to get annoying how every human on this show is becoming a mutant. Can't the Nick writers do anything different?

I'm surprised you're not saying 'it's obvious they were going to mutate April's dad into something'. You sure love using the word obvious a lot.

Is he gonna have one arm? Where's his left hand?

And as for Bebop and Rocksteady, it's not different having a mutant rhino and warthog with purple dragon tattoos than it is having a random scientist get his flesh burned and calling himself the Rat King. If all Falco has to do is control rats to be called the Rat King, all Sid and Fong have to be do is become mutant warthog and rhinos. I just don't know why they'd change their names.

Honestly Bebop and Rocksteady are probably the few mutants not named after what they are, like said... Road Hog and Horn Head or whatever.

I thought it was pretty strange how he must have just hung around the sewer lair with the turtles, Splinter, and April after he was rescued. I don't think we got many scenes showing his relationship with the Splinter and the turtles. One would have expected he and Donatello to share some conversations... for more than one reason.

DarkLightDragon
09-20-2013, 06:30 AM
Honestly, the only thing that disappoints me about this is that it's just another way of Kirby being a victim in some way. Throughout Season 1, he's remained a captive of the Kraang and one of the motives for the Turtles to go after them.

He finally gets rescued in Break-Out, only to reveal, 'Oh no! He's being mind-controlled to work for Shredder and hand-delivers April to him!"

And now next Season he's mutating into a bat.

It just seems like the writers think they can't do anything interesting with the character unless it's to put him in some distressing situation. Why not give him scenes of how he's adapting to living in the sewer with his daughter or interaction with Splinter or any of the Turtles (particularly Splinter since both are father figures, that could lead to some interesting/humorous dialogue and Donnie since both are scientists). But nope, let's sacrifice that so we could make him a 'victim token' again rather than an three-dimensional character who's allowed to interact with anyone by mutating him. Though it's uncertain when this episode where he does mutate will come, that could happen until then.

It also gives me the impression that they don't want April to have two father figures and that Splinter already fits the bill just fine so let's have her own dad become a monster thus rehashing the, "No matter what, we will save you Dad, April" from Don that we've heard before in RotT Part 2.

See but initially Hun was just a big bad guy that they used as a generic leader of the Purple Dragons and then as the show went on he grew and that backstory came to light. Until I see a series bible or something which states otherwise I will believe he was a background character which people responded to who was then given a bigger role.

Which is exactly what they would be doing is Fong, Sid, and Tsoi became Rahzar, Bebop, and Rocksteady. Taking already established characters and expanding their roles. After all it's a lot easier to further develop existing characters than have to create brand new ones

This is exactly how I felt when I read that Baxter Stockman is going to be mutated into a fly as opposed to doing something unique with him.

This is actually one of the few mutations I actually don't mind. As BubblyShell said, I think it will add to some more drama into this show and I'm sure that they won't focus too much on Kirby's long disappearance again. Who's to say that he will regain conscious of himself and stay with April as a mutant until Donatello can come up with an antidote to cure him. Just don't name him Wingnut. Pick a better name than that.

Um, the show gave him a connection to Casey from episode four. The official TMNT website gave him his own profile in its breakdown from the show, and did so before the show ever began airing. He was showcased in the original intro when Baxter Stockman wasn't. The show might have expanded his role in subsequent seasons--starting with "Hun on the Run" and culminating the decision to keep him as an antagonist independent from The Shredder--but he was always meant to be prominent.

The original toon had aliens and robots every other episode. Plus they fought Bebop and Rocksteady at least once per ep. The 2K3 had more of it's fair share of aliens and monsters. Laird kinda went 'add whatever weird stuff you possibly can as long as they're not called mutants'.

Bishop? HE was not even human! He was like 300 year old or some thing? Hun was turn into a Slash what a be in the end and in the IDW comic he drinks some ooze to get younger and get some more power. So I will say both of those are not even human.

Never heard of the Elite Guards.

What would be the point of having a new TMNT show if it would be just a carbon copy of one of the older shows?

With that being the case, people shouldn't be asking for Rocksteady or Bebop.

I just find it hard to believe the writers don't write any other stories that don't involve either:

a) The usual plotline of the Turtles invading a Kraang stronghold, defeating them all, and then blowing it up

b) Having a mutant of the week show up.

Don't you people watch the previous cartoons or some of the comics? There are so many Turtle stories they can tell.

Thank you, not even a fan of them

You're trying to reason with the guy that wishes Dogpound and Fishface were killed off to make room for Bebop and Rocksteady, the captured Kraang would mutate into THE Krang and they would all team up with the Shredder and spend all of season 2 trying to get power for the Technodrome....

I rather we focus more on the mutants we already have instead of churning out a new one almost every episode. I don't mind new Mutants but a new one very week makes the one's we already have boring uninteresting and awfully one note. Xever being the exception.

I take it you don't like Beware the Batman. Considering every Saturday there is always a new villain.

Given its the first season it'll pass for now, but a new one every episode for two seasons would get old fast.

That's a different kind of show though. Batman doesn't have an certain villain that runs things. Even his arch-enemy, the Joker, isn't some big boss guy that orders the other Bat-villains around. So Batman is open to face a new bad guy every week.

The Turtles basically have Shredder be involved in nearly everything except the Kranng (until he sides with them) and the one shot filler villains.

Agreed. None of the other TMNT series do this either, so you can't say this is the norm for a TMNT series.

The Turtles do more than just battle mutants in every episode, hopefully the Nick writers realize this soon.

This isn't really accurate, though. Beware the Batman is structured more or less the same way TMNT is; the difference is execution.

Here's a list of the antagonists for that show so far. Note: Beware the Batman spoilers ahead.

Ep. 1. Professor Pyg and Toad; introduces Simon Stagg
Ep. 2. Magpie; introduces Bethanie Ravencroft
Ep. 3. Anarky
Ep. 4. League of Assassins / Silver Monkey; introduces Lady Shiva
Ep. 5. Humpty Dumpty; introduces Tobias Whale
Ep. 6. Simon Stagg
Ep. 7. League of Assassins / Silver Monkey, Bethanie Ravencroft, Lady Shiva
Ep. 8. Tobias Whale, Phosphorous Rex
Ep. 9. League of Assassins / Cypher
Ep. 10. Lady Shiva / Anarky; Introduces Ra's Al Ghul.

While on TMNT, it' was:

Ep. 1. Kraang; introduces Snake
Ep. 2. Kraang, Snakeweed; introduces the Shredder
Ep. 3. Kraang, Spider-Bytez
Ep. 4. Foot Clan / Bradford / Xever
Ep. 5. Baxter Stockman
Ep. 6. Kraang
Ep. 7. Dr. Falco
Ep. 8. Purple Dragons; Bradford / Xever
Ep. 9. Kraang, Bradford, Xever, Foot Clan, Shredder
Ep. 10. Foot Clan, Dogpound

If there's a difference, it's that the recurring villains in Batman end up playing different roles depending on the episode, which allows them to feel more dynamic. Tobias Whale debuts in Batman as a victim, while on the second episode he's a villain. Both appearances tell us different things about him. The Kraang's repeated appearances, on the other hand, tell us nothing about who they are as characters. What's more, since their plans inevitably fail and turn out to be irrelevant to their larger plot, a lot of their appearances end up feeling like filler.

And this, I think is the problem with all the mutants--not that they're mutants per se (Doctor Who gets a whole lot of mileage out of dealing exclusively with aliens) but that their existence is, for the most part, cosmetic. Snakeweed and Spider-Bytez and Justin and the Cockroach and the Newtralizer are interchangeable--they all serve the role of Big Dumb Destroyer, to be used because the Kraang aren't that interesting on their own. Bradford and Xever's mutations have done nothing to develop their characters or their role in the story: they started out as martial artists, and now they're martial artists who happen to look freaky. So far the only mutant antagonist to do something interesting are the wasps in Parasitica and the Rat King because they led to a plot that couldn't have been done with anything else.
