View Full Version : 80's cartoon cliche's that the original series never did?

Back in the 80's almost every cartoon back then used the same type of stories (characters change bodies, characters become old/young, characters forced to fight in a tournament, characters have amnesia, etc), but which one of those cliche stories did the original show never do?

One big one I can think of is the Turtles never went inside someones body to save their life. You know those shows where the main characters are shrunk down to size and injected into someones bloodstream, and they have to search through the body for a parasite or something? And they fight white blood cells along the way? I'm surprised the OT never did a story with April sick like that and them having to save her.

There are so many paths they can take to do story, of course some of the things you thought won't be in it. Not everything will be in it.

No, but they WERE shrunk. Twice. Does that count? First it was Mikey, then all four. Even though they never went inside anyone's body, they still ended up in some very cliche'ed situations while shrunk. Fighting cats, almost getting stepped on, etc....

And we have the "vacation" episodes, where they go on a trip around the world- another cliché, it seems. And getting transformed from their "normal" state- Mikey to a human, the other three into those "balloon" turtles, and let's not forget the Red-Sky "hyper-mutation". Or what about going into the future AND the past? They did both, IIRC.

Yep, but a lot of the OT episodes were based around parodies of sci-fi concepts and such. And since the show went on for almost 200 episodes they had a lot of time to do stuff.

I also wish there had been a bit more alternate universe stories.

The Mikey transformed into human episode could be so much better. It annoyed me that he magically had shoes again when transformed into human from a barefooted mutant turtle. :P

Also why did Mikey turn into a white guy? Was there any reason he didn't turn into a black/asian/hispanic character instead?

I wonder if this went through the minds of the writers/animators at the time. If the Turtles turned to human how did they know they would be white?

No no, what's worse is when the Turtles ran into a random teen that looked like the human Michealangelo. How in the hell would they even know what Mikey would look like as human? It could have been anybody!

I felt they never did a proper 'good guys and bad guys team up to stop a common threat' story. The episode where Don and Rocksteady worked together for a few minutes was interesting but soon turned into a regular episode. They covered a lot of cliches, some of them even twice, like the Turtles turned into kids, Irma and Donnie turning giant, the Turtles being shrunk down twice, Splinter and Shredder switching bodies, they fought over a girl, they fought evil clones, the went back and forth in time and space, an evil turtle. They did ALOT of the typical cartoon hero storylines.

So it pretty much justified why they never had a video game adventure story. :P

Bebop and Rocksteady also worked with the Turtles in "The Foot Soldiers are Revolting" and the Turtles had to help Shredder and Baxter against the out of control pizza monsters. Then there's the Rat king but that's been covered before.

The Turtles did indeed shrink during the first episode of the Eye of Sarnath arc and faced cliche' hazards when shrunk. I don't remember any other shows of having to go into somebody's body. When Mikey turned into a human, he should have at least maintained his martial arts training. Might be less effective than usual but martial arts are not superpowers! As for the 80s cartoon cliches..

-Bad guys have to be thwarted and/or humiliated in every episode. Check
-Characters looking very little or nothing like their toy designs. Check
-Original characters that don't even have toys. Check
-Enemy Mine situations in which the bad guy doublecrosses the good guy. Check
-Weapons used as tools and not for fighting most of the time. Check
-Vehicles thrown in to promote toys. Check
-Loose continuuity. Check
And the list goes on...

They actually did that recently on Young Justice. The Atom and Bumblebee shrank down to size to go inside Blue Beetle's body to remove the scarab. There was also an old Captain Planet episode like that.

Actually, yes they did. The entire episode with Tempestra was about Leonardo getting obsessed with the game she came from. They were even shown playing in the arcade after hours.

And Donatello did have several "computers" in his workshop. Heck, he even built a working (sometimes) trans-dimensional portal with it's own built-in communication transmitter. He also had all those scanners and such in both the lair and the van....

Yeah, but that falls under some sort of trope or whatever I like to call 'Forced Fake Hobby/Character Trait Syndrome'. Mostly in episodic cartoons without any real character development. This is when a character or group of characters shows a hobby or trait that they never ever showed before just to follow the plot of that ONE episode, and then it's never mentioned again.

Unlike the 2012 show where all the turtles take turns on their little sewer lair arcade (seriously they got like 3 or so games in there), Leo was never shown to have any particular interest in video games, and is suddenly an obsessed gamer to carry the Tempestra plot along. Likewise Mikey, while in the 2003 series he's been shown to be a comic book fan, in the 80's Mikey is suddenly a Bugman fan just to carry the plot. And these traits are never mentioned ever again.

Lots of cartoons did this. Characters would suddenly really like/hate something or have a fear of heights or whatever in that ONE episode and then it never seen or mentioned ever again. I hope 2K12 doesn't follow this trope and say... the next time Raph sees a bug, he still freaks the hell out about it.

I think the reason why doing a TMNT Christmas episode didn't make sense (and only happened in Mirage/4kids because Peter Laird celebrates Christmas), is that the holiday isn't really celebrated by much in Japan.

Hamato Yoshi is Japanese, why would he celebrate Christmas?

Same reason another other Japanese-American teens celebrate Christmas. They're Americanized. And it's everywhere during that time of year. It's basically the only Christian holiday where you don't really have to be Christian to enjoy it (kinda sad, since it is about the birth of Our Lord and Savior). But honestly... even a Catholic like me... as a kid, I had to dragged to church Christmas morning. I didn't know much or care about the religious aspect. I only cared about Santa and the presents. And I assume the Turtles would too.

It is a bit strange that the Turtles never had a Christmas episode, or ANY other holiday tie-in episode other than their "Awesome Easter" VHS special. I suppose neither CBS nor Family Home Entertainment had the forethought to capitalize on a holiday special program (I think ABC, on the other hand, did this a couple of times with The Real Ghostbusters prime-time Halloween specials).

However, talented TMNT scribe Ross May (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/member.php?u=3427) fills in the gap with his vision of what a TMNT Christmas episode might have looked like in the old show:

OH YES THEY DID!!! The "Turtles and the Hare" episode of OT with Hokum Hare from the fairy tale dimension occurred during- Easter!! (At the end, Hokum ends up playing Easter Bunny for the kids at Channel Six's egg hunt!) Also, Usagi did this too.

But yeah, Yoshi being Japanese (and not Japanese-American, as he was neither a legal citizen- AFAWK, nor was he born un the U.S.) probably wouldn't celebrate Christmas. He's most likely Buddhist or Shinto- and that means the turtles themselves are likely the same. (And if Yoshi was, then Splinter- meaning the non-Yoshi versions- is probably the same, too.)

As for Mikey's comics fixation, I gotta' call BS on this. It was mentioned in no less than THREE episodes! Both the Bug-Man eps (there were two), as well as the one where it almost cost them the battle when he can't put down his comic book to fight. We also get Leo's fear of snakes mentioned more than once, IIRC. As for his video-game obsession, that started IN that episode, and ended there, too. Leo only got into it because the others urged him to have some fun with them, and once he got started, he simply couldn't stop. It was more of an addiction than anything- but he eventually overcame it. There was a lesson in that episode, I think....

Only other time I remember Mikey mention comics was an ep that ended with 'if the Technodrome come back, I'm eating this comic book'. The Bugman sequel doesn't count since it was kind of a continuation of the first episode. I honestly do not remember Leo's fear of snakes in any other episode, although similar to the Bugman eps, I swear if the snake mutant ever came back, so would Leo's sudden fear.

The series had several examples. Baxter being randomly obsessed with sugar in that ONE ep. Raph being a jerk to everybody in that ONE ep to justify the Nice Guy Ray or whatever that was. Leo suddenly becoming a big Three Muskateers fan and never mentioning it again after the episode. Zach suddenly telling weird and wild stories in that ONE episode (yeah he's a kid but he's been in enough episodes for us to see that it was very OCC). Hell that one ep where everyone suddenly got on Mikey's case for always clowing around, even though he was as bland and serious as everyone else in any other episode.

I don't know if other cartons did this but the turtles would always casually (and randomly) mention their old friends the same episode they would guest star. Even the random Rat King appearance in Return of the Fly had someone mention his name earlier in the episode. The only episode I didn't see this happen was in Zack's episode in which Leo showed him one of Lotus' flowers and she was never in the episode.

I just thought of one. Noone ever did the 'character turns invisible and decided to play pranks on everyone until shzinit gets serious' episode. I do know both Shredder and Splinter had amnesia episodes, and we had Rat King do the mind control episode. They never had any female characters to do the 'female vs male' episode.

MsMarvelDuckie

That was a special? I always thought it was just another regular episode. And the Usagi one was simply part of his story arc, AFAIK.

Actually, the Bug-Man sequel DOES count, as it came quite a while AFTER the first one. There were several episodes in between, enough so that the two had very little connection other than the character.

Raph being a jerk? Well, to be honest, he did show some rather douche-y tendencies in some of his other episodes, too. "Raphael Drives Em Wild" for one. As a cabbie, he was kind of an a$$. (And I mean his mind in the cabbie's body, not Oscar in Raph's...)

As for Baxter's sugar fixation- that was simply a natural progression of his REGRESSION as a mutant fly. He was becoming more fly-like and less "human" with each appearance- such as the one where he learned to control normal flies. He had never done that before, but it was a natural extension of his mutation.

Also, Leo was not "suddenly" a Three musketeers fan- April introduced him to the book in that episode, and he became rather enamored of it once he started reading it- and apparently he was already an avid reader, as his interest is also mentioned in "Leonardo is Missing".

Where I grew up it was just a term during the whole Vanilla ice 'go whiteboy go whiteboy go' and 'White Men Can't Jump' era. I never saw it as a derogatory term, nor did anyone else. White people themselves would laugh it off. I've had people talk to me about Mexican misinformation and laugh off my corrections with 'omg lol I'm so white, sorry dude'. Hell, the Nostalgia Critic's review on Cool as Ice was all about calling the movie 'too white' and HE'S WHITE.

We can agree to disagree. Like I said, I can give you the other terms, but whiteboy? That's really reaching. Stuff like that has been used and said on TV without any negative reactions at all, is so they would have bleeped the hell out of Vanilla Ice videos and so forth the dude was tame as all hell.

I'll try to use the term less, but it might slip out once or twice. I just don't see it as a big deal, like I don't see damn or hell as a big deal to say. I just want you to either leave me alone, or also go after everyone else who has also been using terms like 'cjack shredder' and 'old whitey' and so forth and stop singling me out. I think by that point, "Landlord of the Flies" was an outlier in terms of Baxter's intelligence, just like it was in terms of most of the rest of his storyline. In "Revenge of the Fly", he's his old dumb self, forgetting his computer friend, and making the snap decision to try to be human again, after ignoring that desire for the whole episode.

The guy claimed he just says that in jest, but Donald Trump told him that he doesn't like that as a joke. Then after he made him leave, he said he's not sure the guy actually was joking.

When you used the term "white boy" in your response to the post I made earlier, I didn't think anything of it, but I generally avoid using the term, as well as "white girl" myself. It's just that it tends to sound a little derogatory to me at times, even though I myself am not Caucasian.

I still find derogatory to be different than actually being racist, but I do apologize if I offended you. Now that you mention it, I do find white boy to be a bit of dated slang, but people seem to use 'white girl' a whole lot more.

I love the part in Karate Kid Part III when Terry Silver is at the dance club and he pays the guy to pick a fight with Daniel-san, and the guy gets shot down by some chick and she's all, "Outta my way, WHITE BOY!" It was so bizarre, because she herself looked pretty white, and she put a ton of emphasis on those two words.

I don't think I'm alone in the fact that most of my childhood moral lessons came from Karate Kid movies. For example, it is downright rude not to yell "BANZAI!" at the top of your lungs when doing whiskey shots. In this case, it seems the lesson is that only possibly-white, possibly-drunk chicks can call anyone "white boy". Otherwise, it's not allowed.

To my knowledge, the OT turtles didn't play video games. And sure I've seen Donnie working with machines but I've never seen him on a computer, let alone playing on one. They went to April's office to read Shredder's floppy disk (that "I Crave Pizza No More" episode) on her PC and that's it.

So it pretty much justified why they never had a video game adventure story. :P

Mikey did. There was an episode with him getting obsessed with his Game Boy, and mocked for it. He ended up saving the day by connecting it to Krang's body and controlling it, but as an arbitrary comeuppance for his laziness, his Game Boy overloaded and exploded in his face. Similarly Leo got obsessed with the Tempestra game.

I wasn't offended at all, just so you know.

While many shows of this era had a limited wardrobe (and many today still do), we do see April periodically change from her yellow jumpsuit, along with the Turtles having masks, suits, winter apparel, and even other outfits.

The turtles went into a virtual reality video game in "Nightmare In the Lair". I think it was a video game wasn't it?

The Turtles did almost every 80's cartoon cliche. I can't think of any they didn't do except a Christmas episode.
