View Full Version : How the movie will influence the comic book and the cartoon?

Somehow I feel the movie will influence the comic and maybe the cartoon. Back to the sewer was influence by the 2007 movie, April, Casey and The turtles appearance change to like more like their movie's counterparts.

I don't think it will influence the new comic and cartoon. I do think, however, that it will probably get its own comic series set in the same "universe" as the movie. A bit like the Transformers films.

The movie will be it's own thing, and it will stay that way. If it gets a comic like Bob says, that'd be great, but there's no way it's going to make everything else follow in its image.

IDW already has a comic going for its new series and the Nick cartoon, I can't see a third ongoing comic for the movies on top of that.

Its basically asking IDW to stretch themselves too thin and possibly lower all their TMNT sales.

We may see some elements getting slowly incorporated, but nothing straight away. As Bob says, we will most likely get a comic series based in the same universe as the film\s.
Some prequel type comics would be cool, like they did with the 2007 movie.

At PowerCon, Ciro said the movie folks were taking ideas from the cartoon.

Did he specify what ideas those were?

I agree with CyberCubed... I think it would stretch IDW too thin to do a full on new comic series, but I could definitely see them doing more of a Micro-Series sort of thing with only like 4 issues as sort of a promo kind of foray... I think it would just be a comic book version of the movie with maybe a few changed up or "deleted" scenes, if you will... Just my 2 cents! I guess we'll find out!

***edit**** Or sort of a Turtle One-shot series- so 4 comics, each one chronicling a turtle, set in that universe, but a setting not necessarily shown in the movie- or an expanded look at a shorter scene from the movie. Just my prediction!

If any new mutants show up, expect them to crop up in the Nick show with altered personalities, like Tokka and Rahzar on the classic show.

If that means anything more than the turtles' designs (as we've already confirmed the height differences & such) then I'll be surprised. Pleasantly, I hope.

Just my prediction! Its got to at least get a little prequel series. IDW did prequels for all of the GI Joe, Transformers, and Star Trek movies (and sequels for some) - while simultaneously running an ongoing comic for each one of those franchises. I don't know why people seem to think Ninja Turtles is a longshot.

I don't think TMNT's a long-shot, I just don't see 3 full blown TMNT comic series running simultaneously. But I do hope to be proven wrong! :)

There wouldn't be an ongoing book set in the movie universe; if for no other reason, than to avoid discrepancies between the books and any future movie sequels. Say the books based on the movie introduce their version of Leatherhead, for example, and in the second movie they do an entirely different take; the comic adaptation would become yet another "splinter universe", and that's kind of the last thing TMNT needs.

A prequel one-shot or a series of 4 or 5 of them like what came out for the 2007 movie, though, I'd almost bet on. But an ongoing series based on a movie is a really tough thing to pull off, especially if sequels to the film are expected. Look at the original Marvel Star Wars comics, created and kept going specifically to keep fans interested until the sequels came out, but almost none of it fits any established SW continuity because the writers of the comics weren't aware of what the other movies were going to do.

One day, there will be a Special Edition of Turtles Forever where the 'Look upon the Multiverse' scene be updated to include all the TMNT splinter universes added between then and the previous release. It will take like 20 minutes.

i bet it will. idw loves those prequel tie ins, and mirage did prequels for the 2007 movies as well as an adaptation, like it did with the previous films.

I'm not saying we should expect a new ongoing comic, set in the movie timeline. But it is possible. That is exactly what IDW is doing with Star Trek, right now. The movie writers make sure canon stays consistent, and co-author certain arcs. With movie prequel and sequel comics running parallel.

I'd say that some kind of tie-in comic is more likely than not, considering IDW's trend.

It won't.

I'm sure it'll get it's own comic too (possibly one-off), just like previous movies, Spiderman, etc. Most comic book movies have em anyway.

way to early..if a prequel comic does come out it would be a few weeks to one solid month before the movie...and remember people dont get hopes up that a prequel comic will give story details...it may focus on stories like april, Shredder, or Yoshi is the story calls for it...i would be very surprised if we get turtles in a prequel comic

If it's just one issue, maybe weeks. If it's something a few issues, it would be that many months.

Exactly, usually there are around 4-5 comics before the movie hits.

and usually they are released all at once...TMNT 07 had 5 comics that came out relatively quickly to its release..i remember because i had skipped math to go see it when i was in college

they dont stretch them out for 5 months

IDW's tie-in comics for G.I. Joe, Transformers and Star Trek have been monthly series.

Leo656
09-26-2013, 08:57 PM
If they do more than one tie-in book, they'll likely be weekly or bi-weekly. The evidence suggests the studio is hoping for the movie to pleasantly surprise people, but aren't expecting it to be overwhelmingly successful. That's the conclusion I've come to after basically no information being given or hyped to the public, when movie studios usually want to spend over a year getting you excited for the movie and telling you almost everything about it right up until the release date. They seem instead to want to slowly release as little as possible, almost in fear that everything they release will be sh*t on. And they have good reason to feel that way; for the first few months, when they *were* releasing information, literally everything they revealed was met with scorn and death threats to Michael Bay. Now they've let little bits trickle out here and there, to responses ranging from "That's better than I expected" to "It doesn't look *too* bad", and various things in between.

But I'd say it's highly unlikely they'd go so far as to have a comic series slowly unveil more and more information about the movie universe over a period of months before the film opens. It goes against their entire marketing strategy so far, that strategy being, "If we don't give them (the fans) much, they have less to complain about." What if their comic revealed Casey two months before the movie came out, and it was a take people didn't like? Or any character, for that matter. I doubt they'd take a risk of prematurely souring fans on the movie, when so many people are already vowing not to see it no matter how good it turns out.

The safest bet would be to have a prequel one-shot come out the Wednesday before the movie opens. That's what I'm betting on. They also could do a series of weekly one-shots the three or four weeks leading up to it, but not monthly. People are so actively looking for things to hate about the new movie, it would be pretty foolish to reveal more than they have to about the movie's universe before opening day. They've been playing it conservative so far, and I think it's wise to keep going that way.

Fast Forward and Back to the Sewers was a result of low action figure sales.

Me too, but the way films are advertised has changed. Nowadays, if you haven't seen anything at least a year in advance, it's because they have nothing worth showing you, or nothing worth getting excited about. That has me nervous. We should have seen a lot more by now.

Leo656

Uhh... maybe for the same reason the Transformers sequels, The Dark Knight, Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, and Man of Steel all started revealing set photos, costumes, plot summaries, viral internet ads, and teaser images about a year in advance? Because months and months and months of constantly telling people "This movie is awesome, everyone should come see it when it comes out" generally means the movie goes on to make a billion dollars. When a studio is confident they have a winner, they shout it to the high heavens WELL in advance because they want the entire world to know the exact day, time and second the movie will be out.

When you have a Lone Ranger situation, and the studio knows they have a mediocre film or an outright flop, they sit on it for as long as possible because they don't want to ruin the anticipation buzz. The fact we haven't seen much from the new movie yet doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, and we've seen a *little* bit, but not as much as a confident studio would reveal if they knew they had a winner. All they've given us is "Trust us", which isn't exactly comforting.

while i understand what you are saying Leo656, when it comes to this movie i think the last thing they want to do is push it back and entire year, you can tell they want that summer release to it gains some focus..like you said as of now we are getting the bare minimum of Info. if this is the strategy i feel they just want it out and over with and never looks back

how ever i have to play optimist prime and say its only October, they really could be waiting to bombard the market come January they gives them 8 solid months of advertisement and there is nothing wrong with that,

i only question because i was in a movie a few years ago pushed back twice to capitalize on the success of Captain America and it still failed miserable and it had TONS of advertisements

What's Your Number with Chris Evans (Casey Jones in cgi TMNT) and Anna Farris..

i filmed my scenes with them a good 2 months before wrap and another 2 years before release..... i remember because i moved to LA and back to Boston before it was ever in theaters
