View Full Version : The irony of the Shredder's fate in the 90s trilogy (spoilers)

Am I the only one here who finds this ironic?
As a normal human being in the first movie, Shredder survives having the everlivin' crap crushed out of him by a garbage truck; but, as a giant, super-strong mutant in the second movie, he is instantly killed by some wood falling on top of him.
Talk about reverse logic!

Wanna talk irony? I find it ironic that the tool of the brightest Turtle of the bunch can post such in inane crap.

Though you seem about a bright as a hunk of wood.

I just imagined a sharp plank impaled his neck during the destruction of the wood structure. As he bended his head (when **** fell on top of him), his neck's all exposed from under the helmet. Died on the spot.

The end.

Another point of irony about the 90s movie Shredder is that while he's considered one of the most menacing portrayals, when you step back and look at it, even the 80s cartoon was probably more powerful. The film Shredder was portrayed awesome, but what was his ultimate ambition? To get a bunch of street kids high and get them to play ninja, stealing him stuff off the streets. The cartoon Shredder (in either the 80s or 2000s)? To take over the world. The comics? I guess to avenge his brother?

Either way, despite such an awesome, terrifying portrayal of the villain, you have to admit his big villainous plot in the big picture was kind of goofy.

Movie shredder had a realistic goal: To rob the city blind.

And he did it with style.
It wasn't ironic that the whole mutation death happened, it woulda been ironic if HE had brought the garbage truck to kill the Turtles only to be thrown in there himself.

I've always thought the point of forums was to discuss the given subject - whether it be in serious threads or just fun threads. This thread is the latter.

If the topics were so inane, why are some people posting their honest answers here without downing the topic starter? Inane threads or not, there's just no reason to be a douchenozzle on a tmnt forum.

You're not going to be able to justify acting like a dickhead to me. Newbie or not, you don't treat people like that. Especially with what we're dealing with here. Ninja Turtles? Not to get anyone offside, but the rudeness and elitism/shutdowns can get a bit much-pretty disappointing when the nick show is probably bringing in a new generation of fans here only for them to get stomped on for not being a TMNT encyclopedia.

I have seen more than a few silly threads on here, yes-but no need to curb stomp the OP if they don't mean any harm.

In my 10 years, this has always been a pretty elitist place. Not sure I approve, but I've always been too lazy to leave. I can't imagine the conversations vary all that much between TMNT forums... I haven't been on many, but I imagine there's a lot of "Which show was the best?" and "Raph vs. Leo: Who Wins In A Fight?" no matter where you go. I don't feel like reading through/participating in a bunch of those all over again, and I don't feel like meeting new people. So I'm not always thrilled with the atmosphere here, but on the whole I've grown to accept it.

There's always been a real "get smart, get tough, or get out" attitude floating around here, though, for sure. I, personally, love everyone, and agree some of the snark could and probably should be toned down. But there ain't even one person here who's actually going to care enough to do so, I'll tell you that for nothin'. If for no other reason than some people really do deserve it.

But if you think this place is rough, avoid Lords of Pain's wrestling forums like the plague. I wouldn't be shocked if real-life criminal violence has occurred because of things said and done there. A real hateful group of scumbags, in general.

Coola Yagami

Honestly, this place is a trap cause there's no place like it. It IS the best TMNT discussion forum out there for all sorts of TMNT incarnations and media. So in a way, as a big TMNT fan I really can't leave since I feel I'd be missing out on a lot.

But if there was another big long-lasting over ten year old TMNT forum still thriving today, without all the snark, elitism and people being jerks to everyone and picking fights just because.... hell yeah I'd leave this place in less than a heartbeat.

i have noticed this in other fandoms..and it seems like TMNT is the newest one to go through the "gen1 is best" phase..being part of the older TMNT crowd i admit that their are times the newbies get on my nerves

but it all comes down to respecting each other..we cant stop newbies from asking "stupid" questions because we where there once and the is how they learn

then again i had my friends fiance ask me who Shredder was

Yeah. We could learn to just get over ourselves and let some things go. We don't need to prove that we are witty with sarcastic remarks all of the time. And besides some of the posters might be kids. Don't be a dope picking on kids over the internet.

As for the topic.

It never really bothered me that S Shredder was crushed. I see now that it was a bit anti-climactic. But he was crushed by a small building that weighed many tons. Now I don't know how he survived in the first movie. I feel like they probably intended Shredder to be killed by it just in case a sequel wasn't picked up, and when a sequel was, they just kind of had to BS Shredder back to life.

Not so much irony as much as inconsistent...I'd say

My take on "irony"....

Shredder kicked the turtles' butts easy in the 1st movie with his superior ninjitsu/combat skills but in the 2nd movie, he deemed it necessary to use 2 not so smart mutants and then mutate himself with the ooze which led to him going bersek and then his eventual death...

Coola Yagami
09-27-2013, 09:34 PM
The thing is... why do the posts bother you? There is no reason for someone's post or thread to bother anybody on here. When I see something I don't really give a damn about, I ignore it altogether and check out the other threads. If something so miniscule(sp?) in the grand scheme of things bothers you even a little... then you got more problems to worry about than whatever piece of TMNT trivia you're curious about.

As for Shredder, seeing his helmet being crushed did it make his death seem rather final.... and I know it was BS he somehow survived being mangled in a garbage truck and coming back with just his helmet being dented and his clothes being kinda dirty. But you gotta admit, it was cool seeing that scene when his hand stuck out from the pile of garbage, like 'oh ****, he's ALIVE!!!'

It's a bit of a subtle transition. Shredder dressed in red in the first one and acted like the serious no-nonsense Mirage version. He dressed in purple in the sequel, got two idiotic mutants and stood around yelling 'GET THEM!!!' instead of doing it himself... like the cartoon.

I think the whole Shredder between movie 1 and movie 2 thing is simply the change in how the movies were handled.

Movie 1 was more dark and serious. Closer based on the original comics and stuff.

Movie 2 was made to cater to the complaining parents whom felt the first movie was too dark for their children. Hence Shredder had his blades 'clipped' so to speak and became closer to the cartoon version along with everything else in the movie.

I guess it's probably expecting too much of a superhero movie franchise to expect the baddie to be permanently killed off in the first film. It's not like anyone or anything can possibly kill the villain when the director has a sequel in his plans.
Speaking of which, I agree with you guys about the Secret of the Ooze: It's definitely more OT than Mirage comics.

I actually watched movie 2 with my kids last night. They thought Super Shredder was awesome, but then he died so quickly. One said, "That's it?" So I agree, anti-climatic, but as others have stated, the tone of the 2nd movie was much different than the 1st.

You don't see The Shredder fight at all in the 2nd movie. My personal theory is that after being crushed by the garbage truck, he has suffered brain damage and is probably aware he is not mentally\physically well enough to fight the Turtles, hence bringing other mutants to the game. I also use this logic to explain Super Shredder being the way he was, brain damage and mutation has got to mess your head up.

I never thought about it that way. It makes perfect sense.
He couldn't even stop punk ass Keno from punting the ooze canister from his hand. sad
This would tie in with another baseless theory I had. Super Shredder died due to heart failure, his already weakened body couldn't handle the ooze and his heart collapsed due to the shock of being transformed and then having the deck fall on him.
In terms of elitism it's def there. I just try to keep it real :P

Haha I don't think he's aimless, I just think it's funny how this, the 2K3, and the Mirage are generally considered the darkest portrayals. With the others, there was some seriously dark ambition (vengeance, world domination), but with this, it seems laughable in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I love this Shredder, and I never even noticed this as a kid watching the movie, it's just something funny I've noticed about this Shredder as an adult.
