View Full Version : Poll...Why do you think the creators of the new show cast Rob Paulsen as Don, and not

...as Raph? After being Raph for ten years in the OT, you'd think Rob Paulsen would return to the turtle scene as just that - Raph. But they gave him the role of Don instead. Why do you guys think this was done?
My personal guess is that the writers wanted Raph to sound traditional - deep voice, bit of a New England accent, and hot-headed. Rob Paulsen was nothing like that as Raph, so they gave the fan favorite roll to Sean Astin instead.
Rob's voice is just naturally giddy and full of emotion, which goes with exactly what they wanted this version of Donatello to be.

Because they wanted to change things up a bit, and I like Rob as Don and Sean as Raph. Both of them are great in the roles. I find it funny that you have this as a poll yet have no poll options for us to vote on and that you have another thread with the same title as this one. What gives?

You pretty much answered your own question.
Rob's version of Raph was completely different from the other versions. His version was reduced to a sarcastic wise guy since the series was based on humor. When Rob heard about the new cartoon, he wanted to play a part in the series again. However, he wouldn't fit their vision of Raphael since Rob and serious don't usually mesh well together (exception being Grey Fox from Metal Gear Solid). In my honest opinion, he fits Donatello better than he does Raphael, even though I liked his take on Raphael.

Where's the poll?

Well, okay, so it's not a poll. It's just a question about Rob Paulsen doing Don instead of Raph. We all get our words wrong every once in a while.

Prior history with Nick...and he was a better fit for Don this time around.
Because they didn't wanna cast him in a role he's already done, maybe? It's not rocket science, champ.

I really couldn't care less about the reason- I'm just glad to have him back in TMNT!! And I love what he's done with Donnie this time out. His voice really does suit the character.

Rob Paulsen himself actually states that they felt his voice fit how they wanted Donatello voice to sound.

I think it's been a gradual process. Episode one he still sounds quite a lot like '87 Raph. I think he's grown into the role. I found my favourite episode was The Pulverizer because everything Rob said as Donnie was just on-the-ball.
I admit it took me a few episodes to get my head around but his voice is a perfect match when you take Jason, Sean and Greg into consideration.
There's also the fact he's 25 years older and that will have changed his natural voice. So even if he tried to do Raphael, he might not sound exactly the same anyway.
I will forever sing my praises for whoever chose the cast.
