View Full Version : What do you think Shredder's father would have been like in the original cartoon?

We saw his mother show up in Season 4's, "Shredder's Mom," who was an elderly Japanese woman who lived in a nursing home for retired supervillains. We saw his brother work for the Tokyo police force.

But we never saw Shredder's father in the OT. How do you think he would be? Would he be evil like his mother and himself?

I don't think his mother was particularly evil- just kind of a b****. I hold to the theory that he was evil because he didn't get the attention that his "goody-goody" little brother did- or maybe he just never got that pony he wanted for his sixth birthday.....

I'm guessing his dad might have been a cop, too. Big brother rebels, and baby brother wants to be "just like dad". That's my take.

Well she was in a nursing home for retired super villians... so yeah... Probably caused a lot of trouble back in her day.

Yeah, but the place didn't seem to have very heavy security. What kind of super-villain could she have possibly have been? And it didn't look like anyone else in that place was ever any kind of real threat, either. Maybe their "super-villains" were just really notorious criminal seniors? (Though they must not have been terribly dangerous.) She just seemed like a cranky old nag who might have committed a few crimes in her younger days. Though Krang liked her, so I suppose that might count for something.

Keyword being "retired" supervillains. When she was Shredder's age she probably caused lots of trouble in Japan.

I don't care to speculate on what Shredder's dad might have been like; the idea doesn't interest me.

Butttttt I think it's hilarious that the OT, after beginning with the notion that Oroku Saki was a stealth villain who seemed to be an upstanding member of the Foot and who used street thugs to do his dirty work, just said, "heck with it", and made the cartoon a universe where heroes and villains were occupations and defined in the most literal terms. Shredder's mom being in a home for retired super-villains wasn't the first time that happened.

Yeah, it's an inconsistency, but it's a cute sort of inconsistency, part of the series' fourth-wall-breaking humour. It's not as sophisticated as say, The Venture Brothers's take on a universe where villains call themselves villains, but I like it.

It really reminds me of Robotnik's mom episode from Sonic. All these super villains ambitious to conquer the world yet quiver under the wrath of their own mother. And these mothers always dressed up so domestically.

So funny!

I think Shredder's father was evil, otherwise, he would have never married his mother. Shredder's family being evil goes all the way back to 1583 considering the episode The Legend of Koji.

The OT probably would have the Technodrome allow Shredder's father to have an energy burst (there is barely an episode in this series without the word "energy") that allowed him to regain his youth and fight alongside Shredder if he was still alive. He likely was a strong fighter, probably having Elite Guard status, but never quite had the motivation to be the "Shredder" of his day, which convinced Saki after his father was lost to learn every technique that was taught to him in order to get ahead. I presume that since Shredder never mentioned his dad that he has passed away long before he first met Yoshi.

The only problem with it is that we're never actually told why she was in there or what she did as a "super-villain". Not saying that she wasn't one, but their definition of super-villain in that show was rather loose to begin with. If the Mad Maestro could claim that title, it's entirely possible she only ever hatched one "evil" scheme- and it must not have been a very good one, if she got caught. So calling her "evil" by that standard seems a little over-generalized. (Incidentally, the retirement home was in Florida, so whatever she did, it was in the States, NOT Japan! Maybe she was defrauding seniors for their savings, and using it to fund Saki's operations? That might make sense with all the shady businesses he was running....)

I thought of this before and came up with the idea that the younger brother wanted to right the wrongs of his family by being an agent of justice versus his family being agents of chaos. So the younger brother is the white sheep of the family trying to break the mold like Tess Luthor of Smallville in a way.

Uh huh, I'd say evil. Now you've got me wondering who'd voice the guy. I often wondered if we'd get to see Shredder's dad when I was a kid. It felt like we probably would since we saw his mother and brother, but oh well. Maybe Jack Angel could have provided the voice.

My vote? Peter Cullen, who did a one-off voice over of the dojo master Smash in "Return ofThe Shredder" best known as the original voice of Optimus Prime.

Oo yeah he would have been awesome voicing Shredder's father. I wish he'd done more work in the ot.

This is an interesting topic. I'd wager his dad was evil too.

Probably an absentee father who never paid him much attention. He'd constantly be trying to win his father's affections and impress him with the Technodrome, his plans to kill the turtles, etc. but to no avail.
