View Full Version : OT's NYC building architecture/layouts subtly constant throughout the series?

So let me try to explain. Over the past year as I have been watching random OT episodes, and I have noticed that particular designs/layouts for certain buildings/rooms within the OT universe are a constant.

-One obvious example we all know is the architecture of the Channel 6 building (starting at season 3 and afterward): As one looks up, the high-rise starts off with 20-30 stories of windows, the giant Channel 6 logo, and then another 20-30 stories of windows reaching the top.

-Another prominent example is the lair layout, which has been discussed here (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=26534). It retains the same layout with the same location of the kitchen, TV room/family room, the Turtles' bedrooms, etc.

Well... now I discovered that some other NYC locations have the same architecture/layout too, that we may have not noticed:

-The layout for Vinnie's dining area for patrons. It has the same checkerboard table cloths next to the window, and a giant menu with pizza images on the brick wall just to right of the counter when a customer walks to the cashier.
See the episodes: "Welcome Back Polarisoid" (Season 5), "Cowabunga Shredhead" (Season 3), and "Michelangelo, The Sacred Turtle" (Season 5).

-The layout for April's apartment. We all know her apartment is a two-story brick apartment, but within her apartment, observe how the open kitchen space is adjacent to her family room, in the episodes: "Pizza By The Shred" (Season 3), "The Gang's All Here" (Season 3), "Adventures In Turtle Sitting" (Season 6), and "Divide And Conquer (Season 10).

-Rex's movie theater (playing "Kung Fu Commanders vs Chainsaw Cheerleaders", and its near Vinnie's pizzeria): "Beneath These Streets" (Season 3), "The Big Blow Out" (Season 3, notice the news report of electricity being lost in the city)

-The Power Plant, the location (near a river) is constant but the exterior layout is somewhat different. "Michelangelo meets Bugman" (Season 4) and "Turtle Trek" (Season 8.).

-City Hall, the architecture and exterior layout is the same in: "Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe" (Season 4) and "Shredder Triumphant!" (Season 7)

-Bebop and Rocksteady's quarters within the Technodrome (notice the location of the bunk beds, television, and pair of chairs facing the TV): "The Foot Soldiers Are Revolting" (Season 4), "Slash: The Evil Turtle From Dimension X" (Season 4), "Return of the Fly" (Season 3).

-In the midst of all this comparing, I noticed as well that Michelangelo, Bebop, and Rocksteady all enjoy reading the Captain Cow comic as well. For Michelangelo see "Split Second" (Season 9), and for Bebop and Rocksteady see "Rock Around The Block" (Season 6).

I'm probably thinking that the reason why the appearance of these locations were the same, was because it was easier keeping these same backgrounds for animation purposes rather than any deliberate, conscious effort in maintaining "visual" continuity within the OT universe. Right?
Anyways, have any of you seen other uncommon OT locations that have the same architecture/layout throughout the series as well?

I noticed the building the anxietron ray was built in Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer The Universe is the same building that was used in Rebel Without A Fin by Dr. Polydorius.

And in Split Second after the turtles destroy that machine that makes all the machines go haywire and then it shows 17:22 on the clock of the long building, I think the same building was shown in The Return of Dregg when that sole microbot flew to the turtles' lair to steal the piece of the vortex crystal. I think the same building was also used in those two episodes: Dregg used it to build the vortex transporter, it looked liked that steel mill where the turtles first met Chronos.

Generally speaking, from Season 3 onwards, the layouts/backgrounds are fairly consistant, though there are some notable subtleties, especially in Red Sky in which new buildings are used and there is even a background shot that suggests the city is in a valley surrounded by mountains as opposed to near water. And the Channel 6 building as seen in Turtle Tracks was the closest to the form used from Seasons 3 onward. Many of the Channel 6 buildings seen in Season 2, ranging from gray marble to a smaller mid-rise building in The Mean Machines were seen as experimental prototypes. Burne's office in Shreddered & Splintered looks close to how it would end up, but April's office (never seen in Season 1) was very abstractly drawn or different in Season 2, and the features such as the flower vase, red curtain, and bulletin board along with the lobby, newsroom, and soundstage didn't appear until Season 3. The Technodrome also went through many experimental rooms in its first two seasons, even the control room in Enter: The Fly looks nothing like it did in Hot Rodding Teenagers, which was seen as the best representation used for most of the series.
