I'm not exactly shocked to see this, but I'm VERY excited. Bring it on. Fingers crossed for a clean transfer and loads of supplemental content.
I would love to see Barron brought back in to supervise the new (or old?) cut, as well as whatever cinematography/music changes Golden Harvest pushed on it after production wrapped.

Here are the bits that talk about TMNT
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman, producer Scott Mednick (upcoming Ninja Turtles), and Randall Lobb (Turtle Power documentary) appeared for the panel called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Big Screen--World Premiere of TMNT Documentary.
The trio mainly discussed and showed a clip of the upcoming 94 min. documentary, Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which will feature never-before-seen footage and interviews. They also revealed that there may soon be an alternate cut of TMNT brewing, and also talked more about the progress of the upcoming Ninja Turtles feature reboot produced by Michael Bay, and starring Megan Fox as one of the major characters, April O'Neil.
To calm the negative rumblings amongst fans ever since the reveal of Fox's casting, the trio reassured everyone that Megan Fox had always been a huge fan of the Turtles and that "when you see her you will be pleased and amazed" and to "hold your opinions until you see it" and not to trust "all the rumors that you have heard." Whoopee Goldberg will also cameo in the film. They also noted that today's technology will greatly add to the quality.

A screening would be cool. Like a one-night event thing. When they released the remastered first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, they did a one-night screening of a couple episodes in select theaters. One night, one showing, and pretty much one location per major city. But it did happen. Dunno if turtles have that kind of pull, but with the 30th anniversary and all...

Those really aren't that great. The one night events tend to be a Blu Ray copy projected onto the screen with really bad sound. Half the time, they're not even projected right.
By going to those, you're not really getting the experience of what it was like seeing the film on the big screen in 1990, which is why people go to those in the first place. Instead, you're getting the home video experience disguised as the theater experience. At least at home, you can control the sound, when you watch it, and won't have to deal with d-bags who think it's OK to talk as loudly as they want because the movie is 23 years old and you've already seen it or if you are one of those d-bags, then you won't have to worry about getting punched in the face, beaten to a bloody pulp, and curb-stomped. :D

Pretty much any limited repertory/revival screening outside of individual theaters is going to be digital. It's the industry standard, and is really no different than standard screenings. Personally, I've always had a blast at revival screenings. I say bring it on.

It sounds like it's still super early in the process, so rumblings from a con coming before an official announcement is fairly normal.
I'm guessing that it won't be as simple as sticking in missing scenes in the theatrical cut. The way the script reads, entire sequences will have to be reworked/re-edited for the extra material to make any sense. The farm sequence will be a LOT cooler.
This would be pretty extensive. From what I remember, Barron only said he has a VHS copy of his early cut. The original workprint and/or negatives will have to be scanned and restored. I'm not sure if the original score has enough unused material to work, and then you also have dialog that might need to be re-recorded if the original elements no longer exist. TMNT was an independent production, so there's not telling what the element archives look like.

I still prefer the theatrical cut ending to Barron's 1990 TMNT film, it takes itself as a concept a bit more seriously ... yet still ends on a fun, light hearted note. I feel the ending with April, the drawings, the comic book pitch and the turtles in the back ground ending is a bit too on the nose. But it would be fun to get to see this cut. I doubt there is truly much additional footage to be seen.
As for Fox, I figured she was a fan. She's in the age bracket that grew up with these characters and mythos being a pop culture phenomenon. I wouldn't have doubted she really went after the role. I don't get why fans were upset with her casting anyhow. She was hardly the worst thing about the Transformer films.
She's hot, April in the OT was smoking. It makes sense that she would be in this. I think it could really work. Especially if this new film is going for the more grandiose style the OT was attempting, as opposed to the 1990 Barron more Mirage take on the material.
I wonder how much cooler the farm sequence is ... to me that was the biggest waisted potential in the film. The turtle training harder, independently, sans Splinter in order to return to NYC to take down the Foot and Shredder.
The idea is conveyed in the film, but a little too glossed over for my fanboy liking. I hope this Turtle Power documentary really covers the behind the scenes with this film. It's a shame we got such bare bones features on the dvd. It was a huge hit. and the movie for me on a personal level has so much mysticism behind it. Even as a kid, with the turtles in comics only being around for 6 years, the toys and cartoon only being around for 2 - 3 years ... this movie came out of the shadows and had quite the impact.
Especially considering it was made as an independent film separate from the big studios.

I would be cool with something as simple as Barron's full, raw VHS rough cut as a bonus feature. I'm sure the quality would be very rough, but it would be a really cool look into the making of the film with all of the unfinished voices, puppeteer voices, etc.

Figures given Playmates history.
It's a shame to begin with that we never got screen accurate figures from the 1990 Barron film.
We got psuedo screen accurate ones for TMNT II, and really accurate ones for TMNT III and TMNT but never the BEST film in the franchise (and IMO the peak of the franchise)
The Mirage based 1990 film. I'm so pumped for those figures. Buying 3x sets easily. Long over due. Playmates and other companies have been too obsessed with the OT, and even the original Mirage stuff. The 1990 film never got it's respect in plastic toy form.

Who said anything about re-releasing the film in theaters? I just heard the words "alternate cut," which simply suggests a DVD/Blu Ray release.
If it goes back to theaters, and I'm very skeptical of that, it will be a one-night only event at Rave and Regal Cinemas, where they just slip in the very same disc you'll be buying that very week. You're not going to get anything like Jurassic Park 3D or Star Wars: Special Edition for a Ninja Turtles movie, I'm sorry to say. (In fact, re-releases aren't what they used to be because home theater technology has improved significantly over the years, meaning a film pretty much has to have a 3D and/or IMAX conversion to justify a full on re-release, because most people just aren't that interested in a paying $10 to see a movie on the big screen when they already own it and can now watch it on their big screen with 7.1 DTS Master Audio HD surround sound, on their comfy couch, with their own beer and their own snacks.)

What else made the film different from what we got?
Well, we're not sure what's going to be in the alternate cut. Just because it was deleted doesn't mean it deserves to be in this cut, but here's a list of known deleted scenes:
(Note: You can see stills for some of these scenes in one of the links provided above.)
-Alternate Opening: Pan into sewer, close in on the lair door. April's narration remains.
-Extended/Alternate Attack on April:
-April walks past peer, tilt down to turtle shells (as seen in the trailer) -Implied that April will be raped
- "I have money" "Good to know, we'll be sure to take it, after."
Note how in the actual film, the line "Get her purse" is said over a quick cutaway.
-Casey Jones' intro: Watching TV, gets disgruntled by the recent crimewave
-Extended Casey/Raph fight
-Extended/Alternate Shredder Intro
Alternate dialogue, as seen in trailer
Shredder Fights April's muggers (which is why they roll out the carpet, and why there is a sudden, but workable jump to his speech. You can also see Sam Rockwell's character holding his arm in the background, as he just got his butt handed to him.)
-Extended fight at April's apartment
April pulls a rug from under a foot soldier's feet (as seen in UK cut)
Leonardo fights a foot soldier down the stairs, into the antique shop (which is why you can see bodies already in the room as the floor collapses, and also why Leo seems to disappear from the fight for a bit)
Extended shots, with a foot soldier over-acting (as seen in UK cut, not worth retaining as the acting is quite bad, and is perhaps excised wisely for this reason)
An extended getaway, showing them getting into the van.
-Extended farm sequence/reel
April's narration on Mikey, who has taken Splinter's disappearance quite hard. He takes his anger out on a punching bag, which you can just barely see in the final cut, unless you blink.
A scene with Casey in a well (TMNT Movie Site, now defunct, used to have an image of this. I believe it came from a trading card.)
Extended training montage, with the turtles blinding themselves as they fight (this is probably one of the most famous of the deleted footage, second to the bobbing shells shot from the trailer. Stills were all over the place, and some people claim that the extended version was in the theatrical version, but I think their memory is playing tricks with them)
-An alternate fate for Shensu (or however you spell his name)
As filmed, Master Tatsu had actually, perhaps unintentionally killed Shensu. It's only a slight alteration, as the changes appear to be only from the sound effects (notice how "you're going to be OK" and the coughing is done in a cutaway, practically on a shot of Danny.) If this is changed back for the alternate cut, the only thing that might be different is the sound.
-Alternate dialogue during the fight with Shredder
Note: It's not clear if the changes were made in post or on the set. The dialogue is better in the film. I can't imagine it without "Ah, the rat! So it has a name. It had a name!" The scripted dialogue was a bit on the bland side.
-Alternate/Extended Ending
April, along with Danny, pitches her drawings to a comic book publisher. The turtles hang from the windows. Mikey falls. (This was released, in rough form, as a special feature on the German edition.)
Of course, I'm sure there was more. A line of dialogue deleted here, a little moment there.
Personally, I hope they don't use the alternate/extended ending. It's just a bit too on the nose, and maybe a bit bright after an hour and a half of urban streets and run down apartments, farms, and sewers.

Thanks for this. There is a lot of information here that I didn't know.

As I have said before, we collected about half the movies raw film footage (in VHS form) while collecting content for the doc. These dailies do include some of the omitted content that "sgtfbomb" detailed so well for us. I can also add to that list with a few gems that no one would have known about, but again I emphasize this movie DOES NOT have a lot of deleted content, VERY little was left on the cutting room floor. The interviews with Steve Barron and Tom Gray (the producer of all 4 films) substantiate this. When he is referring to the VHS copy of the original cut, it might have a few of these missing scenes, but mainly the difference came in the opening credits and some of the changed lines as outlined here regarding the boy being killed by tetsu and such.
The Opening montage of the foot ripping people off did NOT originally have April's voice over during the entire thing. This was the biggest bone of contention between Steve and the Producers. Steve wanted to keep things more ambiguous and not let on what these young guys were doing in voice over, but just show what was going on.
NOTE: If you look closely at the story boards for this film (again you will see very little that was not edited in to the final film) you will see this extended opening sequence which included a boy running into an alley and coming up against a biker gang. This young guy backs into a corner, finds a broom handle and ends up running out of the alley having secretly kicked the biker gangs asses with a broom. The boy who played this young foot in training was ERNIE REYES JR. So that would have rendered him useless in the second film and or changed the background of his character a lot. Kinda cool eh!?
I can also confirm the existence of Casey's intro scene although very short. The Shredder fighting foot scene again it doesn't really add a lot and looks kinda silly, and it is not apparent that these are aprils attackers, just the "final test" to become full foot.
Along with a bunch of really small additions here and there, un-used angles and such, there is one more cool missing thing I found.
When we are first introduced to the Foot base, the overhead crane shot that comes up to the kids on the stairs "Got any cigarettes?", there is an opening to that shot before the crane goes over the half pipe wall with the kid spray painting on it and the roulette table on the other side. In the start of that shot originally there were two kids standing on a board throwing knives at each others feet in succession, like a strange toe cutting Russian Roulette game. Obvious why that was cut out.
Some of these cools tid bits will hopefully make it into the doc, but the coolest stuff that WILL make it in is the behind the scenes shots taken on set, the only behind the scenes video (we think) that exists.

The comic also has a scene where Raph makes his new sais. Apparently, it's nowhere to be found in the script, which may or may not be indicative to whether or not it was shot. I also believe it included a scene where the Turtles jumping off a rooftop as they were leaving April's apartment for the first time. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't shot at all.
The scripted version of the the fight sequence at April's apartment also included a bit where Donnie was fighting a foot soldier who kept trying to dish out witty puns, like "I'm gonna shell you like an oyster!" Let us pray that was never shot!
One thing I'm wondering about is the second flashback. The script includes Nagi, Saki's older brother. Tang Shen tells Nagi she loves Yoshi. In a jealous rage, Nagi beats her. Yoshi comes in, kills Nagi, leaving Saki mourning his brother. Yoshi and Tang Shen go to America, and from there, the story is about the same as it was in the film.
The Shredder fighting foot scene again it doesn't really add a lot and looks kinda silly, and it is not apparent that these are aprils attackers, just the "final test" to become full foot.
The script only clarifies it through description, not dialogue. Something to the effect of "we start to get the sense that the one who gets the headband doesn't get a reward, but avoids punishment."Though, Shredder does say something like "Money paid for their bail is money lost."
I don't believe Weapon X posted a scan for the rest of the scene, but it seems like it might transition into his line "Money cannot buy the honor you've earned tonight..." But, then again, since you've seen the raw footage from the scene, Canadian, can you tell me if Shenso was part of the fight?
If so, it would seem odd to change the intent of the scene, as you'd figure Shredder would want to punish these guys for going to jail, which practically goes unaddressed in the film, unless you count Sam Rockwell holding his arm in pain as he appears in the background as Shenso gets inducted into the foot clan. Unless, of course, it was intended that Shredder was using Shenso's honor as a point to show just how dishonorable those thugs were, perhaps?

I cut together the shredder scene in such a way that made sense to the movie we hope to include at least that scene in the final doc but that comes down to rights at this point. There was no dialogue in that scene as shot and I'd have to go back through the footage to see if there was any difference in how the actor who played shredder said his lines after that compared to the dubbed version we see in the released film. I would guess that as shot they were using it as a final test to be part of the foot. In the story boards he is sitting in a chair but as shot he sitting on the rug they layed out.
There is a nice write up about the panel we were part of over at the teenage mutant ninja turtles .com site...... For some reason I can't post a URL in this post from my phone. So people will have to do that part themselves hahahahahaha sorry.

Cool stuff! I was curious about the chair/throne bit in the storyboards. Every shot I've seen from the cut footage shows Shred standing and fighting, but the early script and boards mention him sitting. I wasn't sure if it was an alternate setup or what.
Personally, I'm not as excited about deleted footage as I am hopefully seeing the farm sequence recut as written. It always sounded cooler than the montage in the final film. Fingers crossed that Barron and/or John Fenner will be able to supervise the (hopefully new) transfer, fixing the pushed film exposure from the Golden Harvest gang.
I'm DAMN excited about this and the doc! I've already been picking out the beer and pizza I plan on enjoying while watching both. Chicago-style deep dish sausage with Shiner Bock. :-)

I'm curious about one thing; but maybe I am overlooking at this. Was it ever explained/shown of how Shredder got a cut on his back? I ask this because when you see the scene with Splinter having Shredder over the building just moments before he meets his end, you see on a cut on his back. I always thought there was a scene cut where you see Leo actually slice Shredder minus the stab in his arm. Sorry to ask this Issac lol.

Well, he was not in the fight in the novel, anyway.
None of April's attackers get the headband, they all get a cut from Shredder's blades. The cut is apparently their only punishment.
Shenso is called to step forward immediately after. In the book, he isn't given the headband; just the hood that Tatsu hands Shredder to put on him. The whole thing made a pretty effective scene in the book.

It's hard to tell in the actual movie. Shredder gives him the mask, but it appears Shenso is already holding the headband.
But, Canadian says there wasn't any dialogue, so it could have been shot the way it is in the script and book, but with no dialogue to actually clarify it. Or maybe the concept was slightly changed.
What's also interesting is that I just checked the comic book and the scans Welmashire put up in another thread (http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showpost.php?p=1104446&postcount=62), and Shenso doesn't even appear in the scene in either version. But, what's telling is that Shredder's speech is word for word the same speech he used in the trailer. Now, obviously it was shot along with the fight, because you can see Sam Rockwell clear as day behind Shenso when he is putting on his mask. So, I wonder if that bit was a last minute addition perhaps to make Shenso's later death resonate a bit more.
Also something I completely forgot about was the scripted bit that's similar to a scene from Secret of the Ooze and apparently takes place during this prominent scene at the warehouse lair. Welmanshire posted a scan of a ninja test with the pickpocket dummy, where recruits had to snatch the bells without making a sound, just like Keno (and Raph) had to do in the second film. I'm interested to know if it was shot.
Was 'The Soprano Maker' in the script?
Yes, in deed. It's actually part of that moment.

This last scene here that you have the card from, I have never been able to find or pin down what it was from. I have come across the shooting script with attached story boards more than once, but sadly never have had the chance to scan the entire thing all together. So I have not found any reference to it in there yet. THAT SAID to me it looks like there is a 12x12 griff behind them (a large white bounce fabric used often on movie sets) so if I was going to guess, it is likely a goofing around on the backlot shot, but I might be wrong.

While you're here answering questions of the unseen, I've got one for ya, Canadian Turtle- Any chance you've got any idea what was cut/unused from the third film? For one, a lot of us wonder if it was supposed to be written in (rather than vaguely implied) that the characters in ancient Japan were all ancestors of Casey, Saki, Yoshi, etc.

To be honest we don't have a lot from the 3rd movie. I know of the director because he still does a lot of work in the city, so I've come across his son on gigs and such. We focused so much on the first movie that even though interviews with some people cross over between the three movies like Tom Gray, Sisti, Tochi, Henson (first two) and Roy Forge Smith. The interview content is there but we didn't collect a lot of behind the scenes content from those movies. We can only really fit so much in the finished doc anyways. The first movie behind the scenes edit came in at an hour of solid stuff, so that is down to around a half hour or less in the final film. So it is sill the majority share of time, but as many other aspects of the franchise have to fit in around that. Sorry I can't answer that question for ya.

I hope the raw footage still exists in the original negatives. I would love to see these scenes in rough form as a special feature, but inserted back into the film, it would go a long way for a restoration if they still had the negative (I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't). I wonder this because that raw footage has been touted years ago on Peter Laird's blog, Blast From the Past, was a VHS tape. Is it just what he has of the film, or is it all that exists of the film outside of the theatrical cut? (I could have sworn Peter said he had a workprint cut on his blog, but I can't seem to find it. Someone also told me that he mentioned that there were some unused bits from John Du Prez's score, but I can't find that either...)

It's from the alternate/extended Casey/Raph fight. Weapon X typed it out in his thread and Welmanshire posted an actual scan of this scene in the other.
A lot of "stills" are actual photographs taken on set as they are filming and not always screenshots from the film itself, so if it that is in deed fabric, it could have been the angle in which the photograph was taken, as opposed to the actual angle being filmed. It also could be taken sometime in between takes, when they were still in position and ready to start again. It could also just be the exposure.
Here's the pertinent bit:
Raphael suddenly sweeps Casey's feet out from under him, deftly swinging on top and putting a strangle hold on him.
Here are Welmanshire's scans:

This more or less deals with the live action movie Laird was talking about before he sold the property to Viacom but could also apply to the 1990 movie. Laird talked about the possibility of this film being done like "Where the Wild Things Are" with live action costumes and CG assists for the facial expressions. Didn't he say at one point they did a test clip from the 1990 movie where their facial expressions were enhanced with CG. I'd love to see this clip to see how convincing it was. It would be nice if they could go back and do this for a Blu-ray release.

Actually there are three books based on the first movie (not counting the comics).
There's the storybook (which is in large format with colored pictures and illustrations throughout), the junior novelisation by BB Hiller (who also wrote the novelisations of movie II and III) and the -let's say- 'adult' novel by Dave Morris.
Both the Morris and Hiller novels feature deleted scenes such as the cut intoduction of Casey watching tv.

Yeah, I've been searching for it, as well. All I can find is the one for Secret of the Ooze.
Now I really want to go around and start buying up some of these books, magazines, and junior novels. About the only collectables I have from the films is the soundtrack and a set of Topps trading cards for the first movie, a complete 36 count box filled with unopened packages, just as it would be sitting on a shelf in Target back in 90. It's funny, it's even like somebody opened it, but no one bought any of the cards, because the top of the box was ripped off.
It's really gotten me nostalgic too. I remember around the time the first movie came out, my grandma had most or all of the Burger King Kids Club videos, which each had a single episode from the OT (all from Season 3, I believe) and a trailer for the movie. I think she also had the aforementioned storybook.

Hearing what they actually say about the alternate cut gives the situation a bit more context. Sounds like it was done outside of New Line/Warners, and I have doubts they might be interested in releasing anything more than a repackaging of the release they already have, since the major studios have little interest in releasing niche titles at this time. I would love for Shout Factory/Scream Factory to give the first film a special edition. They are great with niche titles, but sadly, while major studios, such as Universal, have licensed their films out to them, they have yet to work with Warner Bros./New Line, it seems.

What's amazing to me watching that panel, is how even though it's proven to be such a viable commodity, and franchise ... Ninja Turtles continually gets doubted, and slept on.
It's also very interesting that TMNT will seemingly disappear for a few years, and then explode on the scene again in a re-invented way. It's out lasted it's other contemporaries in those regards from Ghostbusters, Transformers, GI Joe, and He-Man.
