View Full Version : How old are you? What's the average age of the Technodrome Member?

I tried searching for this, but couldnt search "age" because it was too short a search term. I'm just curious what the average age is around here. I'm curious mostly to see what the percentage is of people that grew up either on the original comics or original toon series.

Sadly, I'm 27.

Realistically I feel like I haven't matured at all since I was 17. I still act the same way now as I did 10 years ago when I was still a teenager. Never grow up.

Its good to see that the poll results so far reflect that the majority of members experienced the OT/New Line movies firsthand, and thus is one of the reasons why I like this board so much. I'm 28 currently. I don't know why "Under 10" is an option; those fans are likely (along with some of the 11-15 year olds) at the Nick board.

Not surprised that most are in the 28-35 group.
Another interesting poll would be to see how many people are from which country.
I am from Australia.
Nice to see there are some older fans and that there are of course younger fans coming on board too.

I'm 43 (44 in March '14)!! Been a fan of TMNT since the #1 issue dropped from Mirage! I didn't really collect the figures though as I was around 18 when the figs started coming out. However I bought many of them for my nephew at the time and watched the 80's toon with him every week.

I didn't start becoming a toy collector until years later as an adult (mostly DC Comics stuff). However when the Nick Turtles toys came out I couldn't resist. After buying everything made so far in that line I turned to getting a set of the NECA figs (bootlegs from ebay...still haven't received them yet) and in the last week or two I started buying the old 80's stuff. My goal is to get 1 of every character to display in a glass cabinet. Just in the last couple of weeks I've already purchased more that 50 of the classic toys, plus a lot of the 2003 line. Thanks to several sellers here on the technodrome for helping me out with the hunt!

I just joined here after finding out about it through my search for classic toys. Its a great community here and I look forward to hitting this site every morning!

Dammit, we're all getting old, aren't we? It feels like the last 10 years since we graduated High School has just flown by.

I remember in the early 2000's still watching Batman/Superman/Batman Beyond/Justice League/Teen Titans, Pokemon, TMNT 2k3, DBZ, X-men Evo...Futurama...etc.

I kinda like how time flies :)

when your a kid you're so worried about time.....but as you get older stuff like birthdays just seem more relaxed.

I'm only 20 and I'm already having trouble figuring out what I want people to get me for my birthday.....I'm just like ".....cake is cool...or a sketchbook"

when I was like 10 I could make a list longer than a skyscraper of all the things I wanted

Your 20's will fly by, trust me. A lot of us are nearing 30 and we're shocked at how fast our 20's went by.

28 here and I say its just the way you handle time for the most part...go out and do something just because you would want to do that(if there aren't any real pressing matters to take care of)..this is the way we would look at life when we were kids.and this doesn't have to fade away completely from your life only because you are growing up.
trust me, try to memorate what you were doin as a youngster and try it out again;)

okay, after reading through some of your stuff I add:
I've been down with the turtles since the very start of the cartoon here(germany).I had seen a turtles arcade machine at night on vacation in italy with my neighbour who told me about it the summer before it started.turtle mania happened and I was surfing on it;)..much much later in life I found out that this was all comming from a comic book originally and so I HAD to get them(which seemed not possible at the time but I surprisingly got the first eatsman and laird ones)..then I went into doing comics myself later and then in a moment of doubt I discovered that two of my very dearest things(basketball and turtles) coincided with releases right in the month I was born:the very first air jordan shoe came out in march of 85 and the 3rd issue(which was the very first original turtles comics I got and treasure so much) was also released in march 85... so now I m doing adventure comics about basketball;)
and i love it!

Well, I sort of already talk about how things were back in my day. Think I'm gonna go cry now. haha! Right after that laugh, that is. And that last sentence. Well now I don't feel like crying. I'll never forget the fact that we have the same birthday. I haven't called you at like 6 in the morning on your birthday in a while though, right? I think I accidentally woke you up one year, then you got me one or so down the line. haha! Yeah I was 29 forever, but it only lasted a year and I turned 30 this year! Okay, I don't feel quite so old now, though my bones may argue with that. Seems like it gets harder every year to do the trek to and from work every day, rain, sleet, snow, or shine. Especially when it's two miles one way, and I'm on my feet for 8-9 hours in between. But I still enjoy many of the things I did in my teens and early 20's, so I guess that helps. Mentally, I'll never grow old! Physically, though- that's starting to be debatable, lol!

I must look younger, simply because I'm consistently carded and/or refused alcohol at all but the shadiest of places. Must be that (mostly) clean livin'. Before we get too pushy, let's remember also that some teenagers (or younger) are given the (very reasonable) advice not to tell people online how old they are. Just sayin', my niece for example doesn't tell anyone how old she is. So I can understand if we have "kids" here they might not be so quick to give information about themselves.

Meanwhile, I just don't like addressing my age. Confirming it makes it true in some way, I don't think I've vocally acknowledged my last few Birthdays, as far as the number is concerned. My pictures are easy to find in the appropriate threads; feel free to guess that I'll likely neither confirm nor deny.

Leo656 is right. Its best if the younger posters didn't post their age. And I think its just best if we all didn't start posting our names.

The results of the poll don't surprise me. The 28-35 age group would have been more the group who came into TMNT because of the 1987 cartoon; more so than the others. It was that cartoon that the TMNT phenomena was at its most popular, bringing in its largest number of fans and as a result the largest bulk of long lasting fans.

LOL, back in the early 2000's when I was only 13-16 years old I always had my age in my profile in every forum I used to visit.

DMTShredder

I am 31 years old. I think most of the Turtle fans are a bit older, having been exposed to the original series at the more impressionable ages. Fact of the matter is, if you grew up in the 1980s you were pretty much drenched in Turtlemania for your childhood. That never goes away.

I bet most other people here have places in their hearts for Ghostbusters, He-man, Centurions, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, Thundercats, Transformers and a myriad of other classic 80's cartoons.

It is true, they don't make them like they used to. Sadly quality the children's entertainment has dropped. No wonder they keep rebooting the classics. Anyone else noticed the trends of reboots, Turtles has had a few, He-man too, My Little Pony and Thundercats got one, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Turtles have all had movies made of them in the last few years too. This is the quality of entertainment that cannot die. Cartoons of the 80's always had a moral, We as children learned valuable lessons, because at the end of each episode, the lesson was basically told to us in an easy to understand manner. We all remember those parts...

"Ha ha! But remember, we couldn't have defeated Mumm-Ra this time without the friendship, and courage, of the Robo-Burbles."
"That's right, Tigra. When you have friends to help you, you can accomplish anything."

I just wish more of the movie folks would bother to go to source material for their inspirations, instead of putting in the big stars and aiming for more "family/comedy entertainment" types of movies and aim for the fans. It seems like they take any old script and scribble the relevant character's names in and call it the right name, instead of reading the comics and staying true to character and atmosphere.

Pretty much the same case with Batman and the 66 TV series.

Or most other comic to cartoon/movie. Although there were Batman minis in the 40's I believe. Superman too.

I admit, I was making a semi-generalized view on comic to franchise situations, but The Turtles was included in my statement. Usually, since the source comics are graphic novels, they are toned down for family entertainment big money franchise opportunities.

Back to topic;

I have noticed that a lot of people were first introduced to the 80's cartoon. Though with the insanity that became Turtlemania, I am not surprised it lingers on from there.

From what I hear most 30 year olds are stuck through this awkward phase of realizing they're getting older and losing the last aspects of their childhood and 20's antics and immaturity fade away.

Drinking excessively from time to time helps.

There was a time when I seriously didn't intend to live very long, so technically, I guess, I've been going through my mid-life crisis since high school. :P

Nah, I'unno, 30+ is ok. People do treat you differently and I think that makes people feel differently about themselves, though. I think most people only feel anxiety about getting older because they're not living the life people constantly tell them they're "supposed" to be living at a certain age.

Most of what makes me aware of getting older is just that I'm constantly in pain, but that's kind of your own fault when you willfully inflict car crash-level injuries on yourself nearly every weekend. :P Still, at some point you do notice that you don't heal as fast as you used to, and it takes a little longer to get out of bed on some days.

But even on bad days, I still can't buy beer without ID. That kind of makes me feel better about the whole age thing. Clearly I'm still fooling someone.

Even so, when you're in your 20's you can still act somewhat immature and act like an "young adult" and nobody really cares. Most people just graduate from College then and still have no idea what to do with their lives.

If you act like that when you're 30 you'll get stared at with a, "what the hell is wrong with you?" look. 30 year olds are not expected to be reading comics, playing videogames or watching cartoons unless you're doing it with your young son. If you're doing it without a kid with you people think you're mentally delayed.

I get paid to wear tights and play-fight with other grown men, most of whom also have their own cartoon and toy obsessions. We do this in public in front of large groups of people. "WTF is wrong with you?" is kind of a standard question that I/We deal with, but the comics and toys are really not what is most puzzling to so-called "normal" people.

You never had any kids, Leo656?

Nope. Never part of the plan. To be blunt, I could never have done half the things I've been able to do in my life if I had kids. I have neither the time nor the money and it would be irresponsible to even pretend otherwise. Too many people have kids because they feel it's something society expects or requires, but in most cases, it's a really irresponsible decision. (Note I said "most", not "all")

My sister has two kids, and while she loves them dearly, her own personal life if a mess for a lot of reasons, but a lot of it simply came from taking on far too much responsibility at a time in her life when she wasn't prepared to handle it and had nobody really helping her, and she's really burned out and depressed and unhappy. She doesn't specifically regret having kids, but she does at times admit that her own life would be a lot easier if she hadn't.

Everyone thinks it's so easy, I think, and I absolutely know it's something I can't handle, so I never planned to. I liken it to military service - thank God other people do it so that I don't have to.

And besides, I absolutely f*cking suck at sharing my toys and I have a history of physically penalizing people for breaking them. I think it's wise to avoid those kinds of potential... misunderstandings.

Technically the reason to have kids is so someone can look after you when you hit the ripe old age of 70.

Leo656
02-11-2014, 12:16 AM
You serious? Half the time they stick you in some shady nursing home where they may or may not be stretching out your breakfast cereal with crunchy cat food. Kids are vindictive. I wouldn't trust some kid to fully understand why I simply couldn't take him to the zoo because I had to work or something, and would fully expect them to remember it and retaliate when I was old and semi-helpless.

Besides, I'm pretty sure any kid of mine would also inherit my personality, and I'm sure we've all had enough of that.

CyberCubed
02-11-2014, 12:18 AM
Well the other reason is to give your kid a better life than you had, and probably handle them better as a parent than your parents handled you.

Also to be able to pass things you loved down to them, like wrestling/comics/cartoons, etc.

I. Don't. Share. Let 'em get a job and buy their own! I did! Me and my old man once went to the junkyard and scrapped aluminum cans for 5 hours in mid-July because I desperately needed $25 to buy a set of action figures. (This is considered somewhat "normal" if you're a kid and your family is on welfare.) Let these little misfits learn the value of a dollar and hard work!

Nah, it'd be nice to have someone to pass something down to, but there's no promise they'd like the same things anyway. Me and my parents had only a small number of common interests; all I got from my father when he died was his collection of comics and sports cards, but we had a frank discussion about how while I was happy to get them, I was likely only going to sell them, and he understood that. I wasn't as passionate about the things he was, and while he said it was OK, it wasn't a comfortable conversation. Plus, if it ever came down to it, my niece and nephew might possibly still be into the same stuff when they're older, so who knows?

But I absolutely couldn't give my kid a better life than I had. I had it pretty good for a few years at the start, and a long stretch of garbage afterwards, but even then, my parents had much more stability than I have, and they somehow managed to do that despite crippling substance addictions. I may not be an alcoholic, but I can't afford a mortgage, either, so maybe I don't have my sh*t together as tight as I like to think. Bringing a kid into my specific life would be a really poor decision, and I just don't wanna be one of those people. I'm a responsible adult, but barely.

Plus, good-looking people often have questionable-looking children. I am far too shallow to risk my potential kid's self-esteem by pasting He-Man's face on their body in every family Christmas photo. But I absolutely would if it was necessary.

I see. Well at least Jester will bring up his son loving TMNT as much as he does. Or at least I hope so.

I think almost all the parents on this forum are actually introducing their young kids to TMNT. It brings warmth to my heart to see TMNT finally spread from the original generation to new kids.

Yay for Jester! Good for him! Let him wash his hands a thousand times a day and have a miniature person throw up on a thousand perfectly good volleyball T-shirts! When anyone throws up in MY house, it's not because "they're adowwable," it's because somebody forgot where they put the "Pulp Fiction Kit" and it's a strict "No Cops" situation.

(OK, I was just doing shtick with that last part. Just struck me funny for some reason. :P)

Nah, he seems much better suited for it than I am. Seriously.

I was impressed my niece got into TMNT all on her own with no input from me at all. I'd never mentioned it, she just loved the 2K3 series and then started watching the OT on YouTube. She never saw the movies until I got them for her on DVD in like 2009, but really loved the first one. It was neat that she liked something I liked but for all her own reasons. My nephew got seriously into wrestling but I'm fairly certain I had an influence on that, since I stayed with them for a while and it would be on TV a lot.

When he reaches around 4-5 years old, sit him in front of either Nick TMNT or Fred Wolf TMNT.

After all that's the age we all were when we watching the original cartoon for the first time. At the age of 4-5 is the right time to have him become a fan. I feel like its a civic duty of all TMNT fans to make sure all their kids become TMNT fans themselves.

You word things oddly. If read a certain way, the strength in which you implore him makes it seem as though force would be authorized if, in fact, the child showed no interest or even an aversion to Ninja Turtles.

"Strap him down! He'll learn to f*cking like it! This show is f*cking hilarious! NO, you can't watch TeleTubbies or whatever garbage your mom lets you watch! NOW, which one is your favorite?"

"Ummm... the red one?"

"WHAT"S HIS NAME?!"

"R-Ralph...?"

"ARRRRRRGH you F*CKING CASUALS! YOU and your MOM! It's RAPH! RAPH! You know what, that's it! You don't get a goddamn Birthday this year, you ungrateful little brat! You wouldn't EXIST without this show, do you even APPRECIATE that?!"

"I... I gotta go potty..."

"So go, you're sitting down. I'm done. I'm going online to tell everyone why Turtles 9 is going to suck. Clean yourself up, you disgust me."

....I asked Booster Gold to bring me 10 years into the future, aaaaand.... that's what was happening at CyberCubed's house. I'm not sure we should let him get married.

42 here. Been a fan of the comic since the beginning (was 13 in 84 and it was all magical back then). Moved away from it in my later 20s and 30s and just got back into comics and toys in the past 3 or 4 years out of pure nostalgia.

I did the exact same thing Clark!! I'm almost 44 and was a fan when the Mirage book first came out. Collected stuff early on but then got away from it in my early adulthood. Even though I was always a fan of it I just wasn't a "collector". I kicked myself for not seeing the 4Kids show when it aired (only caught a few episodes) but once I started watching the Nick show it really got me back into TMNT. I've since bought all of the Nick figs and vehicles and have been tracking down all of the vintage toys. Really having a blast collecting the vintage stuff and I am "almost" complete (I think it will be quite a while before SCRATCH joins my collection though).

I look forward to finishing my vintage collection and continuing with the Nick stuff. I can't wait for the half-shell figures to hit!! :tgrin:

As most will have deduced from my username, born in 1982 so I was around 9-10 when the cartoon hit, swiftly followed by the film. Then I discovered the original comic series as well as getting the archie comics.

If TMNT was a boxer, they kept landing knock out blows on me, one thing after the other! Awesome times to be a kid! And the toys!

Also a UK resident. Pow.
