William Fichtner: New TMNT Movie Will Look Awesome

By DAVID WEINER

December 13, 2013

Elysium star William Fichtner takes on the villainous role of The Shredder in the upcoming reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the versatile character actor puts a few Internet rumors about the film to rest, saying with a laugh to ETonline, "I can tell you this much: There's an April, there's a Shredder, there are four Turtles. What else do you need? Come on!"

Fans were seriously upset when Michael Bay, who is producing the movie, announced back in 2012 that the title characters would be from an alien race, and that the film's title would simply be called Ninja Turtles. He subsequently clarified his statements after there was such a huge fan backlash, telling everyone they needed to " take a breath, and chill -- they have not read the script," and the title has been restored to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

"Listen, rumor had it that people were up in arms with a few things about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," said an amused Fichtner. "I can tell you this much: The experience for me was really cool. I have nieces and nephews that grew up in the '80s, and if you were a kid, then that's what the Turtles were. But what I didn't realize when I started working on the film is how big that fan base still is. It's really huge, and … I get why Michael would want to produce a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You've got an audience that was there, but also, I think, kids are ready to see something like this again."

Asked how much the new TMNT story draws on the characters' comic book roots, Fichtner replies, "There's people who could speak to that better than I. You know, I really wasn't a Turtle aficionado and knew all of the backstory. There are some people that know all of the backstory, and that's one of the wonderful things about doing what I do, and sometimes playing a role like this. … For me, I want to find, 'What do you want to do with it now? Who is this guy to you right now? Because I'll tell you who this guy is to me.' And it's finding that collaboration that's exciting about working on this.

"But I will say this much: We've supplied the character of Eric Sachs (aka Shredder) with an awesome time, and with an awful lot of great twists and turns for a guy. But more importantly, I don't think that any version that I've ever seen of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got you ready for what this one is. This is a whole new deal. This is a whole new ballgame. These turtles are unlike anything you've ever seen. They're crazy, it's freaky, it's live-action, and it's going to look awesome. I love Jonathan Liebesman, who directed it. I really felt that he got an amazing handle on what it was and what he wanted, and we'll see. August 8, next year. Can't wait!"

And, of course, there was plenty of warm pizza on the set? "That's right!" Fichtner replies enthusiastically.

I am still enraged that Shredder is now a white man named Eric Sachs.

Especially since Karai is apparently still Japanese. Why white Shredder?

Some have postulated that as leader of the Japanese Foot, she'll actually be Sachs' boss for once.

It's one thing to be coy about something like Godzilla -- and even the teaser from the other day gave us a decent glimpse of what he'll look like, if only brief and obscured with a cloud of smoke -- but with superhero films, I don't think that's necessarily a great idea, at least with the heroes, because you want to know what the heroes look like. We're still a little ways away from the film's release, but it is getting to be time for them to really start selling this film, and it's definitely time for them to show us what these guys look like.

While I am thankful for this bit of info, I have to say this: are you guys seriously going through all of this again? Haven't you regurgitated these same responses to Fichtner and others saying almost the exact same thing? Don't we have anything new to say or at least the ability to refrain from verbatim replies to the same info? I'm sorry to rant, but I'm just feeling annoyed. Unleash your anger on me now.

I wish people would calm down about William Fichtner playing Shredder, I'm not happy about it myself (I'm more pissed off that black actors are playing Jonny and Susan Storm in the Fantastic 4 reboot) but i'm keeping open minded about this and it could turn out to be a twist.

William Fichtner might not be playing Shredder (he probably got told to tell everyone he's playing Shredder) and the real actor is kept a secret, Paramount did remove a photo of Shredder on set a few months back.

Shredder could the IDW version that he's reincarnated.

Maybe there are going to be two Shredder's in the movie and he's playing the fake one.

I personally have accepted the fact that this movie is going to be okay at best. So I've decided to judge it as a standalone movie that's entertaining if nothing else.

Well there's not really anything new to say. Every person involved in this has stated that it's going to have amazing visuals and special effects and it's very much a big Michael Bay affair. To be honest I'd argue most of us knew this from the beginning anyway.

The suggestion that hardly anyone involved can even be bothered to even skim through any material about the franchise and the characters they're playing and treat the idea that it might be a good idea as absurd has been put forward by the actors and producer many times before. Again I'd argue we already knew that before anything like was ever voiced.

When they say or show us something NEW then maybe we'll have something new to say. Of course the likelihood that it will be something that will get us talking positively isn't very good though.

It's gonna suck... so I'll get a front row seat to see how much it will suck.

IMO Karai shouldn't even be in this. She just doesn't work while Shredder is still alive, without being demoted to being a lacky or a relative. I doubt the two even met in Mirage.

TMNT unlike anything we ever seen before... probably cause they'll be wearing that dumbass armor we heard about. And cuz they'll have the Micheal Bay sense of humor with masturbation jokes, special brownies and comments about which one will nail April first.

And... why did they suddenly turn Sue and Johnny Storm black....? Look I get it. These comics are way old when back then everyone was white.... but like... that's just the way it was back then and those characters continue to exist today. Either do em right or don't do em at all. Or go all the way and bring us a black Superman and a Mexican Batman. Noone knew much about Kingpin, Nick Fury or Electro before they got 'blackwashed???' so I guess people don't make such a big deal... but if you really wanna make a statement about equality and all that, change the race of the MAIN CHARACTERS. If anyone whines about 'but Spider-Man is supposed to be white' you can shut up and tell them 'so is Electro, what's your point?'

Batman Begins was good example, but anyone that watched or read anything about Batman knew that Ducard was Rahs. I mean he looks just like him from the start and I was more confused when he didn't call himself Rahs from the start.

Iron Man 3 was a bad example cause he looked like the Mandarin but was a joke... and no 'real' Mandarin ever stepped out. Killian did not count.

I dunno, if not an outright flashback I would bet at least within the context of throwaway dialogue/exposition it's mentioned that Oroku Saki was either a previous reincarnation, someone he took the place of, etc. to try and placate guys like us. Unfortunately, it's not enough and they should know that.

The scuttlebutt is that it may give rise to the emergence of a third, "true" Mandarin who steps forward, unhappy with Killian and Trevor's manipulation of his good name. Who goes on to appear in... who knows. Maybe Agents of SHIELD. Maybe a future Avengers movie.

In Iron Man circles, the term "Killian's Outburst" about being the Mandarin is flung around synonymously with classics like "Jumped the Shark" and neo-classics like "Nuked the Fridge".

What they did with Iron Man 3 was disgusting, IMO.

I'm sure Shredder is gonna be the main villain, or at least the version they chose to run with here. There should be zero doubt. The main reason everyone is so stubborn and acting like 'we don't know who the main villain' is because they can't wrap their minds around how horribly he was miscast. Of course we know who the main villain is, we just don't want to accept it cause they really ****ed it up.

The faster you accept that this Eric Sachs guy is this movie's version of the Shredder.... the less it will hurt when you see it on screen.

Yeah, it makes sense with Trevor mentioning his having to get plastic surgery. If he was in even one scene interacting with the main actors, chances are he was AT LEAST given a copy of the script. That's how film/theater works. Unless you're just an "extra" brought in for crowd filler, you probably at least saw the script. If they have lines or interact with someone who does, they need to know how the scene is scripted. Give the guy a break- if he says there's no other villain but Shredder, then it's probably true. Sheesh.

He's not an extra and he would not discuss with me if he has the script or not.

He knows I would hound him about it and damage any future roles if leaked.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. In most productions, unless you have a substantial role, you won't have seen the whole script. Most likely just the scene you are involved in. That goes double for a production such as this, that they seem to be keeping tightly under wraps. They aren't going to be giving the script out to just anyone, even if they are a paid extra.

I'm not having a go at him, I just don't believe that an extra in the film knows all the plot\twist\character details. Forgive me.

It's kind of weird catch 22. I mean the whole decoy thing has been done in two recent big comic book based movies so it'd be rather groan worthy if they went that route not to mention It would also reduce the presence of the "real" Shredder. On the other hand I can see fans want clutch on to the idea that we're getting Oroku Saki on some capacity.

To be honest I don't see a friend of Michael Bay being cast in a role that of anything other than the big boss man.

I wouldn't say it's impossible at all. When I first watched the movie, I definitely had my suspicions since Liam certainly echoed David Warner's performance. However, there were some solid red herrings. He played Ducard, a real (and separate) character from the comics and it didn't occur to me that they'd merge the two characters. Plus, Ken Watanabe wore the trademark green suit and had similar facial hair too albeit not as spot on as Liam's. Also, Ra's is Arabic and it sort of made more sense to me that they would change him to Asian (ninjas, anyone?) than a white guy. Still, Liam killed it as Ra's and he is my favorite portrayal of him.

What gets me is how they repeatedly mispronounce his name. Batman Beyond even went out of its way to point out how to say it! Blerg. http://youtu.be/FNqnQSQHDhk

EDIT: Never mind, it was the decoy at the end of the movie with the funny glued on mustache who had the green suit. But yeah, the rest of my points still stand.

I know we're all getting upset that Shredder was cast as a caucasian male in this film, and I'm upset too. Even though I like William Fichtner as an actor, I think that the worst casting in this film is Danny Woodburn as Splinter.

Just because Johnny is black doesn't mean Sue will be black. Families are different now…And with Johnny his personality and backstory has nothing to do with his race so if Michael B. Jordan fits the version of the character they are going for then hey, it works. I'd be ok with this Shredder if it weren't for the fact that Shredder being japanese is actually a pretty significant part of the turtle's backstory. The actor is more than capable so I'm sure he'll do the best he can with what they give him, it's just disappointing because it further backs up that there will be pretty significant changes to the turtle's story.

.....that's impossible. You never seen Batman the Animated Series? Unless you never seen what he looks like, the 'twist' was hardly that. He looked just like Rahs al Ghul as much as RDJ looks like Tony Stark. When I first saw that movie I was confused as to why he called himself Ducard and said this random bald dude was Rahs. It was til after the movie was over I realized this was a 'as if noone has ever heard of Rahs Al Ghul' kinda situation.

I'm one of the biggest batfans there is but I totally can understand NOT thinking that Neeson was actually R'as Al Ghul. He was playing Ducard, which IS an actual character in the bat comics and was someone that Bruce received training from. Ducard and R'as are 2 separate characters in the books.

PS... I like Fichter as an actor, but I totally think the casting is wrong and the character should indeed be Asian. Just my 2 cents...

More Shredder talk from Fitchner.

You mentioned Michael Bay. You’re playing Shredder on next year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Fans were kind of up in arms about this version when it was announced. What can you say about the movie?
I’ll tell you this much: My older son still has his little turtle toys that we used to throw in the tub with him, but he was just on the tail end of the craze. I have a lot of nieces and nephews who all grew up in the ’80s. If you grew up in the 1980s and Turtles wasn’t a part of your life, you must have been living under a rock. It was just a huge part of everybody’s existence, particularly kids. I remember seeing other Turtle films and cartoons, and they were all kind of bouncy and fun. That’s not this movie. [Laughs] This is the new Turtles. I had an awesome time working on it. I think the stamp, from a producer standpoint, that Michael Bay brings and the feel and the look that he wants you to get is going to be unlike any Turtles you’ve ever seen. This is live action. These turtles are out there. They’re incredible looking. It truly is. It’s unlike any Turtles you’ve seen and it’s unlike any Shredder you’ve seen. I think Megan [Fox] is the right woman in the right role at the right time playing April. The first time that I heard about it—Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—I was like, “Oh, wow. The Ninja Turtles,” but I certainly finished the project thinking, “Wow! I’m really glad I was a part of that.”

Do you ever get tired of playing the villain?
I have to be honest; I don’t think I play the villain all the time. And I don’t look at it like I’m playing the villain. I think if I looked at every role like, “Oh, this is the villain,” how do you play that? Do you get better at twirling the mustache? I never look at it that way. I need to figure out what a character cares about. I play a gentleman in Turtles named Eric Sachs and we find out who he really is, but he’s a really complicated layered guy in the reasons that he does what he does. That is interesting to find. Is it the villain? I guess, but I don’t really look at it that way.

Hahahahaha, we know that, William Fichtner.

We've never had a white Shredder named Eric Sachs before or possible alien Turtles wearing bamboo armor before.

In other words they ****ed up the characters to the point where they're barely recognizable and they're passing it off as, "brand new never before seen versions of the characters that are better than ever!"

Not like any Shredder we've ever seen? What did they do?

I've made this point before but the actors saying how different this is to previous incarnations of the franchise and characters carries little weight when by their own admission all they know of previous versions are vague memories of the light and fun Fred Wolf cartoon.

Previously he's mentioned that Shredder will be a lot darker than previous versions. That seems very unlikely what it will be is darker than the Fred Wolf cartoon version. Unlikely as it seems it's possible that the majority of the movie may actually be faithful take on the franchise but differs to how the 80s show.

All that being said he's white guy called Eric Sachs. I'd say that's pretty darn different already from any version.

Why would there be? Unless we're assuming Danny Woodburn won't be under heavy makeup/prosthetics/costuming I don't see how his casting evokes anything but apathy.

Well there is the prospect that he'd also be playing Hamato Yoshi or some pre-mutated human version of Splinter. There's also the fact that Wooburn's roles are all similar in playing a certain character type which doesn't seem to sync up with how Splinter is generally portrayed.

I actually think that's a problem with Shredder arguably a bigger one that his race. Again unlikely but they could give Sachs a backstory that despite being an American still is still part of a Japanese Foot Clan but it's the fact that Fichtner doesn't seem like someone cast in role as a ninja master.

I've said the same for quite some time now. That leaked script had all the correct characters and concepts to say it was a Fred Wolf-inspired movie but they were so radicaly different no one would call it a Fred Wolf-inspired movie and make no mistake that script is still the basis for this movie regardless of what Bay says.

Even with the studio mandated changes it still doesn't strike me that that these concepts are any more faithful in adapting the tropes of the 80s show. Vernon as a lead character and an action man, no Bebop & Rocksteady. Any Fred Wolf elements or indeed any elements from any previous versions seem to just be there to validate this as a TMNT movie.

This whole Shredder debacle a very good example of this. It's clear no one making this picture wanted to make a picture were the antagonist is a ninja master but rather a military commander - they simply call him 'Shredder' because of the percieved name value.

I highly doubt that Bay would give his good buddy a role of a patsy and I doubt they'd market Fichtner so strongly as playing Shredder. They're leaving little room for doubt that he's playing a character called Eric Sachs and Sachs is the Shredder.

If it is a case that he's a decoy then not only are we wasting time on a nobody (unless he turns out to be another character of importance) but it'd be groan worthy given it's been done twice now in two very big comicbook based movies and hardly met with with a great audience reaction. At least in those instances an arab terrorist and a Chinese warlord called the Mandarin would cause problems with a certain sections of the public. There is zero reason why the Shredder can't be Oroku Saki other than they want to make a movie with gun fights and big army battles.

This may end up a "fun" movie but they could have made themselves ans us a lot happier by making their alien movie that they originaly wanted to and left TMNT to someone who was even remotely interested in making a TMNT movie.

There's nothing wrong with being different, but being different for different's sake, as defended by those with that faux open-minded attitude, doesn't mean instantly it's good.

Imagine Michael Bay casting Woody Allen as the voice of Optimus Prime. Allen has made great films. I mean, Manhattan and Purple Rose of Cairo. So, he in his own right, as far as being an artist goes, isn't bad. But, in this scenario, we have Optimus Prime, the stoic hero of the Autobots, who now has this neurotic, wimpy voice. You go to the boards and voice your concern about this, and users with names like "PainNgainRocksYo" and "BadBoys4Life" chastise you for not being a true Michael Bay fan because you don't blindly like everything he does, even though the casting decision is obviously a meathead decision.

Fichtner is a good actor. But this is a really strange choice for Shredder. And while I won't go as far to call the gentlemen playing Splinter a "great actor," I do like him in some of the things I've seen him in, like Seinfeld. But, him as Spinter? I don't see. Megan Fox, even though her casting wasn't as out there as some of the others -- well, I can definitely see why some might defend her casting. Yeah, she's hot. But whether or not she's a bombshell in real life -- probably so, since she was willing to trade her natural beauty for that fake, plastic porn star look -- her acting persona is, without a doubt, a bombshell. Truth is, I think of several actresses who can satisfy the eyes without destroying that image by opening their mouths.

This is the kind of stuff I thought we were beyond. I mean, it really does remind me of early 90s, when they would cast anybody and everybody they can get into those horrible video game movies. We're really not too far off from that insane pairing of Bob Hoskins, a britsh actor, and John Leguizamo, of hispanic heritage, as two italian brothers. (And, of course, Dennis Hopper in the Kupa/Bowser role.)

IDW implicitly mentions the Neutrino planet and Utrominom as being in Dimension X. Not sure why it's necessary to have them in an alternate dimension, though, beyond just some slavish need by IDW to adhere to things that are expected from the Fred Wolf cartoon. It could just as easily be in our galaxy or the next.

In Mirage the Utrom homeworld is never named but yes, it's just deeper into our own galaxy, not in any alternate dimension. The Transmat in Mirage only teleports across space, not dimensions/realities. There's even a big map in the Palladium TMNT: Guide to the Universe that illustrates where the Triceratons are, where the Utrom homeworld is, where Earth is relative to it, etc.:

http://www.thegreenlanterncorps.com/tmnt/spacemap.jpg

In TMNT Part 5 Dimension X had been a big part of the previous script and, particularly factoring that we're talking about a production with a modus operandi that has replaced Casey Jones with Vernon Fenwicke... I wholly expect Dimension X is not something that has been written away with.

My excitement for this film died a long time ago. That's why I have mostly not posted anything opinion wise or otherwise, about it as of late. Yeah, the turtles effects should look good. So what? It may be just fluff. Cotton candy pretty fluff. It deserves better. Yes, It will hopefully make it's watchers more curious about the TMNT, where they came from, who the characters are. That's the only thing I see in a kind of positive light concerning it.
But honestly, is this how I want the TMNT to been remembered and seen by future generations?

They could do so much more with the property if they would just spend some time with it. Not as a quick fattened cash cow, but as the inventive, unique property that it is. There is a wealth of greatness to the TMNT and a richness to it's personalities. If all they are concerned with is making crap loads of money, then why the hell won't they put a more solid effort into it? They would only make more money if they did. And that's looking at it from the greedy view point.

Perhaps they will surprise me in the end. We will know so enough.

I don't know if we ever get the term "Krangazoids" as an official name, but the Fred Wolf cartoon and TMNT Adventures are both quite explicit in the fact that he's the disembodied brain of a Dimension X warlord.

Except that one time where they screw up in the Fred Wolf cartoon and show a bunch of brain-looking Krang-type creatures in a flashback. But the official story is still that he's an alien brain, rather than a brain-looking alien species a la the Utroms.

i'm optimistic about the film. i'm also open minded about change. also if they give hints to the 2003, again, but who knows what will happen, might suck, might not, alls i know is i'm gonna see the film

Optimism has absolutely nothing to do with hopes of torture and nazism in a TMNT film... Freak.

I am still enraged that Shredder is now a white man named Eric Sachs.

Especially since Karai is apparently still Japanese. Why white Shredder?

I'm going in expecting an absolute disaster, I'm gonna make sure I won't be let down. There is no possible way this can be worse than I'm expecting. I feel everybody should go in that way, never be let down. Can only be an improvement

....i don't give a damn if he's white. i'm passed that now. i just want shredder to be a sick and evil bastard. the kind who would keep you in chains. the kind who would brutally beat you on a daily basis, torture the **** out of you.

then prolongs the torture by giving you hints that your love ones are being watched, and anyday, any time they would be murdered, or even horrendously tortured. y.

Seriously dude. Hope this is a troll

Oh God, I hated their pronunciation of Ra's. I expected him to start groaning in that grating annoying Ras Monster's Ink voice,"I'm waaatching you, Brucey! Aaaalways waaaatching!"

And I love that glorious fallback position the cast/crew of the TMNT movie journeys to every time they get a bit of flack.

"Don't worry! There's explosions! The turtles are unlike anything you've ever seen! The Shredder is unlike anything you've ever seen! Vernon is unlike any cameraman you've ever seen!" It's always about the visuals. Unlike anything I've ever seen, huh? Jokes on you, cast and crew! Your visual distractions have no effect on me! I'll be keeping a close eye, so to speak, on your plot instead!

I care what I'm seeing yes, but I'm not a baby, I don't watch it for the cool colors and weird motions, if you are gonna keep talking about visuals make a 2 hour video of Leonardo dangling keys. It's all about the cinematic experience, plot and all.
