Howcome everytime we have a new cartoon or new movie come out, Michelangelo's voice always sounds like a slightly altered version of the original toon's Michaelangelo? He always has that rasp or surfer sound to his voice no matter the incarnation.

In the original movie trilogy, the 2007 movie, and the 4kids and Nick cartoons Mikey always sounds like a throwback to the original cartoons Michelangelo voice.

There are noticeable differences of course, but he's the turtle who always sounds the most similar in different series. Whereas others like Donatello sounds very different between the movies and cartoons for example.

You forgot to mention Mirage Michelangelo from Turtles Forever he doesn't sound like a throwback.

The voice just stuck I guess. I don't think Nick counts.

Forgot about that one, but since Mirage predates the others it made sense he sounded nothing alike. I think Peter Laird approved the voices for the Mirage turtles so he probably didn't want them sounding like the others.

I really wonder how much of the FW toon there was when Barron's TMNT was produced. Rist may very well have taken NO cues from Townsend depending on the timeline.

The movie came out in 1990. That's when Season 4 was airing.

Even if you count pre-production they still had Seasons 1-3 of the OT to base voices on. Movie Leonardo sounds similar to Cam Clarke most likely for this reason.

It came out in the down time between season 3 and 4 that's right, but I think Barron himself talks about it being a long production.

But when they did the auditions for the voices that likely came later.

I don't think the movie voice for Mikey sounds ANYTHING like the OT "surfer" one. He was much more "normal" sounding, and had a much different pitch/tone. The only real similarity was his occasional use of the surfer slang. The only one that actually sounded similar to me was 03 Mikey. All the others have been very different- and with very little surfer slang, at that.

I always just figured Townsend Coleman was a big fan of "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". His Mikey sounds and acts exactly like Spicoli. Although it could be that the producers were fans of the movie and gave him that direction. It almost had to be based on that, though, the voices and catchphrases are far too similar for it to be a coincidence.

Now I keep seeing in my head OT Splinter asking Mikey constantly if he's "On The Dope".

Go watch that movie, by the way, if you haven't or just haven't lately. 8) Pretty much every 80s/90s "surfer-stoner" character was based entirely on Spicoli.

Maybe Mikey is a stoner?

Marshmallow and banana pizza with chocolate fudge? There's really no "maybe" about it...

OT Mikey had a deep and stoned surfer voice. All the other Mikeys were more high-pitched possibly to reflect more of his status as the kid appeal character.

I don't know that I'd call Robbie Rist's voice "high pitched."

Not really, well, not as much as previous incarnations.

California New Age, maybe, but not "surfer."
And even that I only say because it's hard not to think California New Age when one knows Cipes is behind the voice.

Because it's iconic. It represents his fun loving side. I think the beter question is why Raph has a thick accent in some versions.

To me 2k12 Mikey sounds like Greg Cipes regular speaking voice adjusted to sound younger and more manic. I imagine that if he were to voice an older Mikey he would just speak normally.

I totally agree as to how awesome Greg is at portraying Mikey. The 4kids version of Mikey just didn't do it for me but my better half and I both love the 2012 version.

It's funny because I like most everything about the turtles various incarnations except for the extreme qualities of their voices. I guess for a franchise aimed at kids you have to make the different characters have very distinct personalities.

I didn't like Greg Cipes voice at first, but I've grown to love it. Not sure what you mean Snakeweed when you say it's not surfer though. Cipes is the real life version of that kind of character! I like how Nick doesn't rely on extreme voices such as Raph's incredibly strong accent mentioned above.
