View Full Version : If Kevin Eastman were to buy the series...

This is hypothetically speaking but do you guys see Kevin ever buying the series back and if so, what direction do you see the series (comics, TV shows, movies) go? Do you think the series would be less sci-fi, more action packed, more dramatic, etc...

I kinda think he'd be too busy to run that franchise again. It's probably easier for him to be a guest artist and occasional consultant than running the whole thing itself

There is a zero percent chance of this happening.

While there might not be a chance in that happening, it's fun to dream, isn't it? Accept...well...I'd be a little leery of an Eastman-run TMNT, but that's only off from the hearsay that he was the one entirely behind the Venus character in Next Mutation. If anyone can correct me on this, feel free. I'm always open to new information.
Don't get me wrong, everyone knows that teenagers all need to have their heart-throbbing-breath-stealing crushes, but I think the show went about it the wrong way. If you're going to introduce the concept also take on the fact that the other three would be severely lonely and the other issues with not being a "normal" teenager - if there is such a thing.

Kevin seems like he wants to still contribute to the series. I wish Peter still could.

What Kevin is doing with IDW would be the extent he works with the series.
If Kevin did buy the series I would expect it to be exactly the same as it is now.

I still can't get over the fact that Peter sold the whole shebang for 60 million dollars. The series and toys already made 500 million in 1 year and is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon.
IF Eastman or Laird were to ever buy it back, it would cost them WAY more than 60 mill! I doubt those two guys combined would be able to give Nick enough money to let go of this cash cow!!

True but at the time the series was slowly dying with a cartoon that was relying on gimmicks to continue, a failed movie, a dying toyline and the comics being trapped in limbo. If they tried to sell it at the height of 2k3's popularity and the movie was a bigger success, they could have sold it off for a lot more.

Kevin is kind of in a bad way right now. I don't see him pulling out 63 million (or by the time Nick is done with the franchise, quite a bit more) dollars out of his pocket anytime in the foreseeable or unforeseeable future.

It's fun to think about but like many others have said I don't see it happening either. I personally enjoy his contributions on the comic book side of things personally. That's where it all started and being Kevin seems to be the most comfortable there. The TMNT has a lot of moving parts and it's probably easier for someone else to keep it moving than just one or even a couple of people.

I don't see why Kevin would want to buy the franchise, clearly TMNT is doing well in Viacom's hands, and he can chill with the IDW comic and other stuff.

The reason Nickelodeon has had so much success with it is because they've put in the effort to revitalize the characters and have made much smarter and better business partnerships than Mirage ever did. And Nickelodeon has a whole lot more money to put behind marketing.
Honestly, Peter is lucky he got what he did. The TMNT had zero future if he hadn't sold them.

Technically the movie was still going to happen as they made the deal back in 2009 before the sale.

Nickleodeon is a big corporation. Surely there's no question they'd do better (commercialy) than a small company like Mirage.
That being said at the point of selling TMNT there was a movie deal in place, yes? In fact hasn't been said that having that deal already in place was important to the Nickledeon sale?
I'm going to out on a limb and say that movie while probably would not have been as financialy successful would have much better than the upcoming 2014 abortion.

Well said. Also, had Kevin taken helm of the Turtles, maybe he could have worked out a deal with Rick Veitch to have his TMNT work reprinted.

Not going to lie, I was actually surprised Peter didn't sell the property to either DC or Marvel.

You mean Disney or Warner Bros.? There might have been offers/interest from Disney but there were no offers.

Very true. Thanks to them, the turtles are becoming popular again and hopefully they'll be as well known as DC or Marvel heroes. I'm hoping Viacom continues putting even more effort into keeping them afloat. I just wonder what's going to happen to Mirage Studios now that the property doesn't belong to them anymore.
I like seeing Nick with the turtles... Things like their inclusion in the Nick Universe theme park and Nick hotel. Seeing as Nickelodeon has a partnership with Universal Studios, it's fun to imagine the possibilities of future attractions.

There's lots of possibilities with Nick that the TMNT property might not have had with just Kevin Eastman. Plus the financial backing that Nick has can take them even more places.

If you are referring to the figures from this thread/article:
http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=45102
One has to consider that this $475 million is revenue (with the term "global retail sales"), and not profit. Nickelodeon has to deduct $60 million from purchasing it from Laird, the huge promotional costs for the series in many media formats, merchandise advertising costs, manufacturing costs (contracts considering the raw materials, labor, packaging, and shipping for the merchandise with the manufacturing companies), the salaries of all the employees associated with the show and the franchise itself, and I'm sure many other facets used to bring TMNT into the mainstream's attention.
So while the revenue is impressive by itself, I'm a bit wary to consider it such an "outstanding" success when there are no profit figures, and its a bit premature since we need a few years to pass by to forecast the franchise's financial trajectory. I'm sure it must be profitable, but the bigger question is how profitable? An entertainment industry analyst would have to compare its figures to other franchises and with TMNT back in the '80s and '90s (inflation-adjusted) to get a more accurate assessment of just how successful the TMNT franchise really is doing, rather than solely basing the success on the words from the Nick executives. ...But if anyone ascertains such revealing information, post it. :)

When any company acquires a new property such as in this case TMNT it takes a few years to really start showing profit. I'm sure TMNT will be successful yet again but as JYX pointed out you got to look at everything that goes into putting the property out there. It will be interesting to see how it compares to previous years of TMNT.

I honestly think that the franchise would fall under the radar like it did in the 4kids era since Nickelodeon wouldn't get enough money do to its promotion like its currently receiving. The current cartoon and movie would have to be financed by small independent studios, and promotion wouldn't be as a good. Only Playmates would still receive the full support since they still have a good relationship with Eastman. The quality in away would suffer since all versions would be similar to IDW, similar to how 4kids, the 2007 movie, and Vol. 4/Tales Vol. 2 were all in the Peter Laird universe, and was only modestly successful.
The Nick OT wouldn't be much different (lots of mutants), but I feel that without Ciero Nielli we probably wouldn't have as good of as a knowledgeable boss to push the series forward.
