do you think it would be good idea for this show to have a city at war story involving the krang vs the foot?

Adapting it for the kiddies probably wouldn't work.

What I'd really like to see though is a direct to DVD/Bluray film based on City at War, traditional animation, Afro Samurai style... or something to that effect.

No, there's no need for that, especially as the Foot and Kraang are allies right now, so it wouldn't work.

As much as I like to see comic book adaptions in a cartoon, I don't think they would be able to pull it off in this series.

If they did, it would make more sense if it were to happen with the Purple Dragons rather than the Kraang if it were to happen at all.

Why even call it that, then?

yeah, the dragons aren't exactly a threat at this point, so puny in numbers

Because it wouldn't be anywhere close to the original. This show isn't built for those kinds of stories & I'd rather it do new things than make an attempt at 'adapting' a classic, especially when it would be butchered by censorship. The weight of it all would be entirely lost. Nods are great, but leave it at that.

What Powder said. Plus for me, I just don't like Mirage or its stories.

It didn't work for 4Kids, would work even less for this series.

There is no way in hell we're ever going to get something remotely close to the original into a kids' version, so it's better off doing its own thing.

Not that I'm opposed to the entire idea of adapting story lines from the original comic. Want to have the Turtles forced out to the farm house? Sure; go for it. Want a "Return to New York"? By all means; I'm fine with those becoming franchise staples because they translate relatively well across different versions even with large changes. It's okay, and can be kind of fun, to have recurring elements of the mythology.

"City at War" has so much more going on, though, that any adaptation in a kids' cartoon would really be in name only. And at that point, why draw comparisons or constrain yourself to the homage?

Good, Fair points, and I agree wouldn't work either. But what's wrong with the 4kids version? or is there another thread about that somewhere?

It would never work for the nick turtles just to kiddie

The 4Kids version is only lightly connected to the Turtles' plot in the comic version "City at War" (just one of four distinct stories that made up that arc), and even then it was devoid of any weight.

We were left with a very silly, sanitized version of a gang war (which, while this isn't a statement on the overall quality, also isn't really what the comic version is about), that fired for all gravitas but didn't really move the characters or story forward.

Basically, it was:

1) The comic story line only in the broadest of strokes and

2) Unlike respectable adaptations like the 4Kids version of space arc, "Silent Partner" and "Return to New York," which worked quite well with their differences, it just felt clumsy as an arc on its own. It's a case where they certainly would have been better off introducing the elements through an original story.

"City at War" is just too much to bite off for a kids' version. That's not a statement of value either way; it's just not as easy to adapt as other major Turtles story lines, and if you can't at least stay true to the intent, it's really not to anyone's benefit (not the show's, not the comic fans', and not current viewers') to try.

Since the show doesn't adapt storylines wholesale anyway, it would just turn out to be awkward and weird.

Even IDW's "Cityfall" didn't come close to City at War, and they're an adult comic book.

The only thing that Fred Wolf adopted where rough elements of the first seven or so issues that David Wise read before he started scripting, and even those were just rough concepts. Even though Ciro Nielli does the same and we'll expect periodic references to Mirage, this series looks like it wants to go its own route. The only tie-ins we may get in a more direct sense are the New Animated Adventures series. I wouldn't mind a new arc similar to "The Big" triology in the OT in its own way, but avoiding adoptions and providing original material keeps this series interesting for me to watch.

I wouldn't mind if they used elements of that concept of City at War, but not actually the City at War arc.

Take characters that can work in a version of such and take elements of the City @ War concept and work it into a plausible story for this incarnation of Turtles.

So the story itself: No.

The concept: Yes, a similar arc in their own separate way with what they have.

An adaptation, no thanks.

But I'd like to see the writers tackle a similar issue in the show.

To be fair, there are character elements of "City at War" that could be adapted into a kids' show, and those are actually the parts of the arc that give it its identity far more than the Foot conflict:

Turtles ending their feud with the Foot be accepting a truce to take out one of its factions? Doable. (Though you lose a lot of flavor without Splinter having started things, and without the ability to incorporate killing.)

Splinter learning to let go of his ideals and embrace his nature? Doable.

Casey going too far and quitting vigilantism? Doable.

April trying to lead a normal life and accepting the Turtles and Casey as family? Doable.

Doable in the universe the Nick show has crafted? Yes, some of it, very loosely. But it's more a series of small homages at that point than a proper adaptation.

I'd like to see Nick's Rat King force Splinter to eat a rat. Since this Splinter is human it won't quite be the same as cannibalism like it was for Mirage Splinter.

What, in a kids series?

Yeah, like that'll happen

I don't think that a City At War arc would happen. The Foot Clan has no current enemies other than the Turtles at the moment, the Purple Dragons are too weak to fight Shredder, and I don't think that there's a lot of content that's workable there since April and Casey are teenagers. Also City At War is for teens-adults unless it's the 4kids version (which was pretty good for being toned down).
